It’s Am I the Jerk Court Wednesday on The Morning Brew with Chris Bennett and Best Friends, and today’s episode has a little bit of everything — laughs, real talk, and a heartfelt moment.

We start the show catching up with Jineane Ford from Majik 101.7 and iTalk 106.7, as Chris shares that it’s his anniversary and gets some simple but meaningful gift ideas.

Then it’s time for Am I the Jerk Court, with Jineane as our judge, breaking down a situation about helping a friend move — and whether it’s wrong to expect the same in return.

We check in with Paul from Beaumont, play a round of Would You Rather – Awkward Moments Edition, and test our knowledge with Are You Smarter Than a Redneck? – Celebrity Trivia.

We also take a moment to remember a beloved Brew Crew member, Scotty from Concho in a Poncho, one year after his passing. He is missed and always remembered.

If the show made you laugh, think, or smile, share it with a friend and follow the podcast so you never miss an episode.

Anniversary Plans And Garden Gifts

SPEAKER_00

From the Horn Auto Center Studios, Chris Bennett and the Morning Brew. Janine, you there? Yes, I am. Heck yeah. Good morning, best friend. Good morning. Do you know what uh today is?

SPEAKER_01

Uh, the day after St. Patty's Day.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. And also my anniversary.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, congratulations. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

It's kind of complicated. Well, my wife and I uh we've been married a couple times, but we still celebrate the first time it ever happened. So uh yeah, 26 years ago, year 2000.

SPEAKER_01

That is so cool. And you how she is the best. Oh my gosh, she's a doll.

SPEAKER_00

She's amazing. I can't believe she's put up with me so long.

SPEAKER_01

And you guys are so different. It's so cute. I know. Very cute. We are yin and yin. Yes, yes, yes. She is chill, sweet, kind. Well, you're kind. You're very kind. Yeah, but I'm not chill. No, you're not chill. She's chill. Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Do you have any advice uh on uh what I should do for her on her 26th anniversary?

SPEAKER_01

Okay, 26 years. Do something you've never done before.

SPEAKER_00

Ooh.

SPEAKER_01

Something new. Ooh.

SPEAKER_00

Think about it.

SPEAKER_01

Think about it.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I wish she would love. I you know what was funny? Uh I went to uh Home Depot yesterday and got her some flowers because she loves to garden.

SPEAKER_01

Uh-huh. Yeah, that's a good one.

SPEAKER_00

And uh when I brought them home, I realized the other day when she went to Home Depot, she bought herself the exact same potted flowers.

SPEAKER_01

Hey, the more flowers the better in my book, okay? Uh but uh but you could you could try this year. You know what she should do? What? You should make her a bird bath. You know, you can make all those cool DIY birdbaths. Make her a birdbath or a bird feeder. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You know what would be more fun for me if I got in the bathtub and I pretended to be a bird in a birdbath.

SPEAKER_01

Just not as pretty, Chris. Not as pretty.

SPEAKER_00

But I think she'd enjoy it. I guess. That sounds tough. Maybe lots of bubbles. Lots of bubbles. That sounds tough to make a birdbath.

SPEAKER_01

No, they're easy. Okay. All right. With some clay pots and some. Yeah, very cool.

SPEAKER_00

Is it time to start planting your uh crops or your flowers? No, no, no, no.

SPEAKER_01

We have to be careful. We could still have a hard freeze. I mean, you can put in your little onion starts, a lot of us are doing that, but you have to be careful. It feels like full summer. Every year, so many years you get stung by this. You know, this will happen, and then it's really around Mother's Day that we're supposed to be putting our gardens in. So that's like the end of May. Oh, God. We got some time. I know. Man, it feels like summer already. No, we can get a freeze again. Yeah. Okay. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, uh, thank you for the uh anniversary advice. I'll think about the uh bird bath and uh how it's just that I'm making some bird baths right now.

SPEAKER_01

That's the reason I mentioned that. They're fun, they're cute.

SPEAKER_00

Make an extra one for me, and then uh I'll tell her I made it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, there you go.

SPEAKER_00

All right, it is now time for Am I the Jerk Court with the honorable Janine Ford presiding. All right, Janine, here's the story, and when we come back, we'll get your ruling ready. All right. Okay. I, 27 female, have a friend, 26 female, who asked me to help her move this weekend. The problem is, last year when I moved, she didn't even offer to help or check in, even though I helped her with a big project. I told her I can't help this time since I have my own plans, and she got upset, saying I'm being selfish and not a real friend. I feel like friendship should go both ways. So am I the jerk for standing my ground and not helping her move? What say you?

SPEAKER_01

I think she's a jerk. Oh. I'm sorry. I just it's one of those things where you don't do tit for tat stuff, you know, and if she can help her, go over and help out. Maybe, maybe you're not gonna break your back and do it as but you're gonna go and help anyway. I mean, uh the the thing is you don't say, ooh, they didn't do that, so I'm not gonna do this. I hate that tit for tat stuff. And if you're a friend, you're a friend, just help her. So yeah, I think she's being a little bit of a jerk. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and one thing that stuck out to me is like she said she had moved a year before and her friend didn't help, but she said her friend didn't offer to help or check in. She so she it didn't sound like she asked her friend.

SPEAKER_01

Right, right. I caught that too. And the thing is is that this friend is asking for help. She needs help. And the thing is that sometimes people need more help than we do, okay? So help them out. So yeah, I think she's being a little bit of a jerk because if you're a true friend, you're gonna be there to help. Whatever, right?

SPEAKER_00

But I agree completely. And you know, uh, here's a little tip I like to do whenever I help my friends move. I like to go to garage sales before I go to their house and just buy a bunch of random stuff and then sneak that random stuff into their moving truck.

SPEAKER_01

That's horrible. Yeah, exactly. I have enough of that random junk, yeah. It's where a box is filled with one shoe, a leftover bag of Cheetos half open, and yeah, yeah, no.

SPEAKER_00

Where did all this stuff come from? That's great. So, in the case of Am I the Jerk for refusing to help my friend move, Janine says, yes, you are the jerk. No tit for tat, just be a friend.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's what friends are for. Oh, okay. All right, Janine, we love you, best friend. Love you too. Thank you so much. Bye-bye.

Remembering Scotty With A Tribute

SPEAKER_02

Woo! That's Bob Lord! Good morning. Yay!

SPEAKER_00

Yee yeah yeah Paul from Beaumont, everyone's favorite redneck. Uh, you were doing a little homage to uh our best friend Scotty from Concho and a Pancho, huh?

SPEAKER_02

I am my biggest fan, bro.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, Scotty from Concho and a Pancho. Yesterday was one year since uh he left us here on Earth. And uh man, uh I can't believe it's been a year. He was uh he was such a bright shining light. I I call him a tornado of uh positive energy, right?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, absolutely, man. I don't think my guy had a bad bone in his body, man. He was just always laughing and wanted to have a good talk.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he was amazing. Yeah, his uh his uh fiance, Patty, uh, gave me a call and was like, hey, do you think you could do a little tribute to him and and maybe you know play a song uh dedicated to him? I was like, well, do you know what song? She's like, Well, I don't really know country. And I was like, dude, I know the song that uh Scotty would request, right?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, absolutely.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, uh, he he loved this song we're about to play. What song is it?

SPEAKER_02

I know why. I know why he did too, because we like to party, baby.

Would You Rather Awkward Moments

SPEAKER_00

That's right, yeah. House whiskey. I like to party was one of his favorite songs. And uh, Scotty, wherever you are, buddy, we love you, we miss you, and uh thank you for the light that you shared with us while you were here on this earth, and uh you will never be forgotten. We are back with our best friend Paul from Beaumont, everyone's favorite redneck there in Beaumont, Texas. And uh, Paul, today is National Awkward Moments Day. Uh when I say that, does any uh specific awkward moment pop into your head?

SPEAKER_02

No, man. Uh it's just awkward as the new normal, bro.

SPEAKER_00

That's right. I remember the first time we brought you out to Sholo, uh uh your wife thought that the whole time was gonna be an awkward moment.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. She's like, yeah, it's me.

SPEAKER_00

I'm going. I'm leaving. Well, uh, since it is Wednesday, let's do a little would you rather with some awkward moments. Uh, I'll read you some uh awkward moments and you tell me which one you'd rather have happen to you. You ready? Yeah. Would you rather wave back at someone who wasn't waving at you? And I do that every day, or hold the door open way too early and stand there awkwardly. I do both those things probably too. I do that all the time. Yeah, which one would you rather do?

SPEAKER_02

I guess hold the door to be like, come on, hurry up, come on in.

SPEAKER_00

Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Would you rather say I love you to your teacher or your boss?

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god. I don't go to school. Uh and my boss feat like fish press is like four or five hundred pounds. Uh oh. That'd be definitely our uh, I guess. Yeah, I guess I should tell my boss to style love.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you know, I don't think people use love enough. I love telling people I love it.

SPEAKER_02

I'm gonna video though in case I get punched in the face.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, video it and see their reaction. I uh one of my friends, Bill Mooter, nothing cuter than Bill Mooter, delivering those chips and shaking those hips. Uh, I told him I loved him and the look on his face, he didn't know what to do. Like you could tell you could tell he was like, ooh, and then he was also very, very uncomfortable.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I get it. How would you build?

SPEAKER_00

And uh last one. Would you rather forget someone's name mid-conversation or call them the wrong name confidently?

SPEAKER_02

Oh. Forget somebody's name.

Redneck Celebrity Trivia Showdown

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, uh, I do that all the time. That's why I call everyone my best friend. Wow, we're so awkward because I do that too. It is now time for Are You Smarter Than a Redneck? Today, Paul, uh, with the uh Oscars just happening this past weekend, I thought we would do some celebrity trivia. It's multiple choice. If you know the answer, say your name. That's your buzzer. Ready? Let's go. What Hollywood Starlet was arrested for shoplifting from Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills? Was it Charlize Thoreau, Christina Ritchie, Angelina Jolie, or Winona Ryder? Chris. Oh, Paul, go ahead. Go ahead.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was one out of Roder, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yep, there you go. Ding ding ding. 2001. Yeah, how stupid. All right. In a bizarre bit of celebrity behavior, who dangled his baby from the third floor balcony? Oh, Paul, Paul, Paul. Paul. Paul.

SPEAKER_02

Mike Jack.

SPEAKER_00

That's right. All right. And uh let's see. All right. Uh, if you get if I get this one right, I win. It's worth a million points. If I get it wrong, it's over. Which celebrity is a former firefighter? Was it Dwayne Johnson, Sean Penn, Steve Boucemi, or Tommy Lee Jones? Paul. Paul. C. C, Steve Boucemi. Holy moly. That is one smart redneck. Congratulations, buddy. You are smarter than a handsome radio DJ.

SPEAKER_02

Ain't nothing awkward about that, brother.

SPEAKER_00

That's right. We love you, buddy. Thanks for having fun with us, and hopefully, we'll talk to you soon. And uh uh R.I.P. to uh Scotty from Concho and a Pancho, buddy. Absolutely, man. So let's party now. Let's party. We love you. He he will never be forgotten.
