Horseback Bar Story Teaser
SPEAKER_00I actually rode my horse in there and uh one time rode my horse down the back stairs of Bill's bar. Oh, really? I would never do that sober.
SPEAKER_01Well, if someone once told you they rode a horse into a bar, would you believe them? That happened to my guest today, and I believe them. Hello, best friends. It is me, Chris Bennett, and we are hanging out with White Mountain Sheriff Posse members Richard Bilby and Mark Sterling today. We tackled relationship advice Thursday. Find out who knows the White Mountains better in a local trivia showdown. Gave away some diamondback tickets and heard some incredible stories that can only happen right here in the White Mountains. Let's get the show started.
Relationship Advice Setup
SPEAKER_01Chris Bennett and the Morning Brew. It is now time for relationship advice on this relationship advice Thursday. And our two uh relationship advice experts are Richard Bilby and Mark Sterling from the White Mountain Sheriff's Posse. And uh you guys are cowboys, and you've been both been with uh your significant others for a while. Do you feel qualified to give relationship advice?
SPEAKER_02I do.
SPEAKER_01Awesome, yeah. And we were talking about it off air. We listen to a lot of uh country music, and country music has some of the best relationship advice in it. So if you listen to country music, then you're just destined to give good relationship advice. All right. Nuggets of wisdom. There we go. All right, here is the story. When we come back, we'll get your advice.
Germany Dream Versus Ultimatum
SPEAKER_01All right. Uh I'm 27 years old. My girlfriend is 26. And after almost a year of planning, I finally got accepted into a master's program in Germany. I've already been approved for my loan, paid tuition, applied for my visa, and everything is going as planned. I'll leave in October. This has been my dream for a long time because I want to build a better future and work on meaningful engineering projects. The problem is, my girlfriend. We talked about getting married someday, but she recently gave me an ultimatum. She said if I move to Germany, we're done because she doesn't believe a long-distance relationship will work. I understand why she's worried and I love her, but I also know I'll probably regret giving up this opportunity after working so hard for it. Should I follow my dream or stay and choose the relationship? Woohoo! What is your advice to this young man?
SPEAKER_00You're gonna miss me when I'm gone.
SPEAKER_01Ooh, great quoting a great country song, given his relationship advice with some country music. I love it. Uh so he's out of here. What is your advice, Richard?
SPEAKER_02Uh, pretty much the same. Ultimatums never work, and uh, if she's not gonna leave you or leave with you for a job, she's probably gonna leave with a cowboy anyway.
SPEAKER_01So, okay. So you guys are you're getting on your horse and you guys head an app.
SPEAKER_02Go find a fraline.
SPEAKER_01Go by uh, but he should definitely go pursue his dream and don't put his dream off for for someone who throws an ultimatum at you.
SPEAKER_02She doesn't dream with him.
SPEAKER_01Oh, dude. I wish that sounds like a country song that hasn't been written yet. If she doesn't dream with him, he's gone.
SPEAKER_00There's a lot of fral lines in Germany. There's a bunch of them.
SPEAKER_01That's Bobby Helms. Well, uh, that was our relationship advice today.
Posse BBQ Fundraiser Details
SPEAKER_01You're gonna miss me when I'm gone. We are hanging out this morning with our friends Mark Sterling and Richard Bilby with the White Mountain Sheriff's Posse. We're promoting their annual fundraiser, their barbecue this Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the orchard at Charlie Clark's. They have live music, live auction, and great food. What's the food that's on the menu this year?
SPEAKER_02Get pork or chicken, get beans, coleslaw, corn, a dinner roll, a drink, and a cold drink.
SPEAKER_01And a cold drink and uh some of the best coleslaw in the world. I'm going to I can't wait. I love coleslaw, so we're gonna try that out. And also ice cream for one dollar, and uh the ice cream proceeds benefits the 4H. Now, our friends Mark and Richard have uh been longtime locals to the White Mountains. Uh, how long have you been up here, Richard?
SPEAKER_02Technically 49 years.
SPEAKER_01And how about you? 55. And Mark 55, okay. We are gonna find out who knows more about the White Mountains.
White Mountains Trivia Showdown
SPEAKER_01Multiple choice. If you need it, if you don't need it, but say your name, that's your buzzer. Which famous show bar was known for stories of horses going in the bar and even maybe a mountain lion being brought inside. Richard. Richard.
SPEAKER_02That would be uh what we commonly call Williams Pub, but known as Bill's Bar.
SPEAKER_01Bill's Bar. Have you both been in that bar before? Plenty.
SPEAKER_02I was raised in that. By the way, when you when you introduced us, I don't want to make Mark feel old, but I was three when he moved to the mountains.
SPEAKER_01Oh, really? Think about that.
SPEAKER_02There you go, Mark.
SPEAKER_01Think about that.
SPEAKER_00I actually rode my horse in there and uh one time rode my horse down the back stairs of Bill's bar. Oh, really? I would never do that sober.
SPEAKER_02Especially if you ever spent any time under Bill's bar and looked up at the hand floor.
SPEAKER_00I have when I sold beer up here. I went underneath to put the neon lights in, and uh I never rode my horse in Bill's bar again. That was the scariest floor ever. That's why the sawdust was on there.
SPEAKER_01The front side was all concrete. And I think I hear about the uh the Bill's uh bar sign. I think you have the sign now, right?
SPEAKER_02We just got it mounted up in my bar at home in my shop, and we're uh gonna have a little celebration sometime soon.
SPEAKER_01Awesome. A great piece of uh White Mountain history. Uh next question: which White Mountain high school team has won the most Arizona State Football Championships? Is it Snowflake, Blue Ridge, Solo, or Round Valley? It'd be Blue Ridge. It is Blue Ridge, all right. We are tied at one apiece, right? And last question: this will determine who the winner is. What famous Western outlaw spent time around Holebrook? Was it Billy the Kid? Butch Cassidy, Doc Holliday, or Wyatt Earp?
SPEAKER_02Uh, I'm gonna go with Billy the Kid.
SPEAKER_01Billy the Kid. It is not Billy the Kid. It is not Billy the Kid.
SPEAKER_00Butch Cassidy.
SPEAKER_01Is it Butch Cassidy? It is Butch Cassidy. Did you hang out with them, Mark? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, we were they used to have beers at the bucket of blood saloon back in the day.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we yeah, we did a few swills together.
SPEAKER_01Well, the winner of our Who Knows the Most About the White Mounds, congratulations, Mark Sterling.
