subject of following Jesus in the home. 00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:28.480 What does following Jesus in the home look like? 00:00:28.640 --> 00:00:33.759 What does discipleship in the home look like? 00:00:34.560 --> 00:00:50.560 About six years ago, I first started on staff at River Oak, and I was in uh the middle school ministry and serving, extremely green, still green, but then extremely green. 00:00:50.960 --> 00:00:59.840 And uh I'll never forget in the first four to five months was where my my burden for the home began. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:15.120 I remember I spent a lot of time with middle schoolers and high schoolers during that time, and in a very close-up way, I got to see into the life of middle and high schoolers, and I got to see their struggles. 00:01:15.760 --> 00:01:42.480 I got to see with my own eyes and hear with my own ears the way the way they think about the world and the struggles that they have and the sins that were that were plaguing them and just the things in our world that they were wrestling with, and in very short time after being in student ministry, I realized how important is the home. 00:01:43.439 --> 00:02:11.360 You know, I thought about it at the time and it has stuck with me, that if a student came on Sunday morning, every Sunday throughout the year with their parents to church, and if they came to every youth event on a weekly basis, that they would be here and they would hear the word and and everything, but that would amount to about 125 hours over the course of a year. 00:02:11.680 --> 00:02:14.159 125 hours over the course of a year. 00:02:14.319 --> 00:02:22.400 Now contrast that with the average daily time that a high schooler uh spent on their phone. 00:02:22.800 --> 00:02:33.680 And that number, if you could just in your head try to guess, that number amounted to about 1,200 hours per year. 00:02:34.560 --> 00:02:48.560 And then also considering the amount of time that a student would spend in school just Monday through Friday on a weekly basis, that number came out to about 1,800 hours per year. 00:02:50.080 --> 00:02:54.800 So I saw early on that we had a big disadvantage. 00:02:55.599 Hendricks, he uh was a professor at Dallas Theological Seminary for a number of years, and he said these words. 00:03:33.199 --> 00:03:37.680 Many Christians today are praying for revival in the church. 00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:43.759 But there will never be revival in the church unless there is revival in the home. 00:03:45.039 --> 00:03:56.639 I'm sure many of us in this room would agree that if there's ever a time, a day and age where we as Christians need to fix our sights on the home, it is today. 00:03:57.680 --> 00:04:06.960 They say divorce rates are about the same right now with professional Christian marriages and also non-Christian marriages. 00:04:07.039 --> 00:04:08.319 It's about the same. 00:04:08.639 --> 00:04:22.240 I read just this past week that among 18 to 23-year-olds, that less than 1% have what we would call a biblical worldview. 00:04:22.560 --> 00:04:29.759 And just to summarize a biblical worldview, we would summarize that by saying, number one, they would believe that the Bible is inerrant. 00:04:30.079 --> 00:04:31.839 That is totally true. 00:04:32.160 --> 00:04:38.160 Number two, that they would believe that God is the creator and ruler of the world. 00:04:38.720 --> 00:04:50.160 And number three, that Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father, that through Jesus and not through good works is the only way to have eternal life. 00:04:50.399 --> 00:04:58.160 Less than 1% of 18 to 23 year olds believed that and held to a biblical worldview. 00:04:58.319 --> 00:05:02.480 The home, the home is important. 00:05:03.519 --> 00:05:27.920 And what we're gonna look at this morning in Deuteronomy chapter 6, I am fully convinced that if we in this room embrace what the word says to us today and not just hear it, but apply it into our lives almost as if the souls of our children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren deserved it, that we would see change. 00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:32.399 That we would see a reformation like we've never seen before. 00:05:32.560 --> 00:05:34.720 I believe the home is everything right now. 00:05:34.800 --> 00:05:42.319 In this context of Deuteronomy chapter 6, Moses is our author, and he wrote this around 1400 BC. 00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:54.560 In the time of writing Deuteronomy specifically, the nation of Israel has just really finished this 40 years of wandering throughout the wilderness. 00:05:54.800 --> 00:05:57.199 They initially come to the land of Canaan. 00:05:57.279 --> 00:06:02.000 They could have entered 40 years previously, but they chose to doubt the Lord. 00:06:02.160 --> 00:06:07.680 They chose to doubt that he would deliver them and give them victory over the peoples living in the land. 00:06:07.839 --> 00:06:12.160 And so they turned and 40 years they spent in the wilderness. 00:06:12.240 --> 00:06:13.759 But God was faithful. 00:06:14.240 --> 00:06:15.759 God was faithful. 00:06:16.079 --> 00:06:21.920 And 40 years later, here, as we pick up Deuteronomy, they are about to enter into the land. 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:28.399 And really, Deuteronomy, the whole book, is Moses' last words to the nation of Israel. 00:06:28.720 --> 00:06:34.000 Moses is not going to be the man to lead them across the Jordan River into the land of Canaan. 00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:37.360 Rather, he is passing the torch to Joshua. 00:06:37.759 --> 00:06:41.360 And here, Deuteronomy is his last words to them. 00:06:41.680 --> 00:06:56.800 His pleading with the people of Israel that they would remain faithful, that when they go into the land, that they would keep their eyes on the Lord and that they would follow the Lord, and that they would not abandon the Lord for idols, that it would go well with them in the land. 00:06:56.959 --> 00:07:00.079 This is what Moses is pleading with them about. 00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:07.120 And here, in these few verses of Deuteronomy 6, he's writing about the home. 00:07:07.439 --> 00:07:18.720 And I want us to see here that what he is saying then about the home is just as true and just as applicable to us as followers of Christ today. 00:07:19.920 --> 00:07:25.839 And if we're going to see a reformation, we need to see a reformation start in the home. 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:29.040 And so I want us to think about this question first and foremost. 00:07:29.279 --> 00:07:31.759 What is our home filled with? 00:07:32.560 --> 00:07:44.720 And I want us to think about this whether you're single, or whether you're married with kids, or whether you're an empty nester, or whether you're a grandparent, you have we're going to pass on the faith to the next generation, if we're going to see the Lord's work and the Lord's blessing and generations to come, that we would fill our homes one with the love of God. love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 00:08:52.480 --> 00:08:53.840 This is called the Shema. 00:08:54.639 --> 00:09:03.120 And even to this day, practicing Jews will recite what we just read twice every single day. 00:09:03.279 --> 00:09:10.159 It's called the Shema because that word hear, Shema is Hebrew for hear. 00:09:10.720 --> 00:09:13.279 And this is how Moses is introducing this. 00:09:13.440 --> 00:09:16.639 He says, Hear, O Israel. 00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:22.559 In other words, listen very closely to what I'm saying, but 00:11:23.120 This is something very unique to our God. 00:11:23.200 --> 00:11:30.399 You see, the people of Israel, they were about to go across the Jordan into a beautiful and rich land. 00:11:30.960 --> 00:11:34.240 A land that was flowing with milk and honey. 00:11:34.720 --> 00:11:38.399 But also a land that was filled with false gods. 00:11:39.759 --> 00:11:47.120 Now, I think that's a very true reality of the land we live in as well. 00:11:48.320 --> 00:11:59.440 In many ways, we live in a land that is flowing with milk and honey, but a land that is full of false gods. 00:12:00.639 --> 00:12:03.440 And this is what the people were about to go into. 00:12:04.080 --> 00:12:18.399 And really, it's a warning against idolatry, that they would not set their hearts, that they would not set their desires or their affections on the false gods of the land that they were about to go in. 00:12:18.639 --> 00:12:34.080 The false gods that could promise them satisfaction, provision, protection, safety, that they would not set their hearts on the false God, but that they would remember the Lord is their God and He is one. 00:12:34.320 --> 00:12:35.759 He's all sufficient. 00:12:35.919 --> 00:12:47.360 They didn't need to go to a specific God for this problem, or a specific God to fight wars, or a different God to fight health struggles, or a different God to fight financial struggles.
