Miriam Bulcher (00:00.654)
Welcome to today's episode of Empowered Over 50 as I kick my camera. That's helpful. So today's episode, I reached out to Rita, who is a past client of mine. She's absolutely phenomenal because I was thinking about it. It kind of hit me like a 10 of Brooks Day of the day. I was like, I have so many clients that every time they come in and ask me about makeup and everything, like there's always a lot of makeup questions, but there's actually not a whole lot of questions about skin. And skin is always a big frustration point for a lot of women.
Rita, introduce yourself and tell the listeners who you are, what you do, and all that fabulous stuff.
Rita (00:35.571)
Okay, my name is Rita Krauss and I have a shop in Mount Horeb, Fresh Complexions. I'm an esthetician. I specialize in really women over 50, but I've gotten a lot of acne clients because a lot of their sons and daughters are coming to me now too. So that's been really nice. And I don't do any injections or that kind of thing. more about, and I have no judgment on that. If you want to do that, that's fine. That's just not my thing. I use eminence.
It's 100 % organic and I'm more about just getting your skin healthy and I want everyone to look the best you can look because really we all want to look healthy and good, right? So.
Miriam Bulcher (01:20.142)
Yeah, absolutely. What I think also, too, a lot of people want or at least in my my purchase, like I don't want to have to rely on makeup in order to feel good. Like I just want to like feel good in my own skin. And then the makeup is kind of like the bonus, right? Like bonus thing that kind of like helps me to feel good. So let's talk. love that you said that you specialize in women over 50. And I, you know, hope that people who are listening who are local, even if they're not local, it's worth the drive. I feel like to Mount Horeb to see you because, you know, having somebody who
Not only knows your skin type and age, you know what I mean, demographic, I feel like it just takes a lot of that anxiety away from being like, my gosh, I'm be told I need to clean out my whole skincare line. And you know what I mean, like somebody who's actually gonna work with you. So let's talk about changes women are going to experience as they are aging, whether it's from your own personal experience or just from things that you've seen from clients. Like what are some of the biggest transition points that you see?
Rita (02:22.065)
things obviously is menopause with women and as you approach as you approach menopause you'll notice your skin gets drier
That's really, don't produce as much oil. So really that's a big change for a lot of people. And also some people might get more hormonal acne, which is usually around here. Like that might flare up because your hormones are fluctuating. So you might not have had a breakout for 20 years and all of a sudden you're getting a pimple here and there. So it can be frustrating. You just have a lot of changes. It might be time to upgrade or add something to your routine. So that's a big one. And just really, um,
Knowing that as we mature, know, when kids are little, their skin turns over, it heals really quickly. If you get a bruise or a cut, it heals really quickly. Once you get past 20, your 20s, really, your skin doesn't turn over as quickly. It takes you longer to produce collagen. You lose some of that volume. You're not producing as much.
collagen as you used to and everything just slows down. So that's really something to keep in mind. And there's a lot of things you can do. There's...
You know, there's blue lights, which are the lighted masks. I don't know if you've seen those, but what that does is work with your skin's own mitochondria in your own cells, and it activates them to go faster, to speed up. So it's kind of naturally doing what your body used to do that slows down as you get older. So I feel like that's one really good investment. So just finding little things you can do here and there is really helpful. And maybe tweaking your routine, maybe adding some oils, that kind of thing.
Rita (04:05.069)
not using as many acids. Yeah and of course sun damage is a huge one. Really really really encourage sunscreen use, sunblock use because that will show up faster and faster the more you damage your skin from the sun. It's gonna be harder to repair as you mature so things like that.
Miriam Bulcher (04:30.54)
Let's talk about that sun damage then, because I know for a lot of individuals, know, like dryness is always like, well, I'm drier than I used to be. That's a really top, you know, when I'm putting people's makeup on, you know, like, it's frustrating because I can put on all the moisturizer and it just feels like, you know, it's not enough. And then also like that leads to, well, I don't like the way makeup is looking on my skin, especially in the under eye area. So.
talk, walk us through like the sun damage, how it can affect like, because I feel like sun damage, at least from my knowledge, is like a domino effect, right? Like not only do you have that superficial layer of damage, but it's also going to affect a bunch of other things, right? Like the dryness, the texture of your skin, how things are going to lay on it, you know, just like overall elasticity and things like that. tell us like, walk us through, say, for example, someone has a sun damage already, right? Like, let's just assume because it's kind of easier to kind of approach it that
Rita (05:08.765)
Ready.
Miriam Bulcher (05:28.4)
way, but what would your advice be for the women who are like struggling with the dry skin? You know, they don't like the way their skin is looking because you know, either it feels weathered or it just from the sun damage or whatever it might be. What are some things that they can work on because getting those things reversed, you know, surgically is obviously not ideal. So what are some options?
Rita (05:28.701)
Sure.
Rita (05:40.099)
Mm-hmm.
Rita (05:47.091)
I it. Right.
Okay, so the number one thing is to use a physical sunblock, not a chemical sunscreen. So you want something with zinc. There are a lot of tinted ones now that are much better that don't give you the white cast, but you really, because anything you do, you're just going to undo the, undo the any progress you make if you're still out in the sun. There's a lot of peels, a lot of really good peels you can do. I don't do peels in the summer, but in the fall, like
If you have one or two spots or they're not really, really deep, a series of three to six peels can make a huge difference. That can bring that up and then you have the new fresh skin and if you take care of that, it won't get damaged and your skin will...
The elasticity, it won't come back, but you can do a lot more with repairing your skin if you're not also damaging it at the same time. There's also lot of lasers that they've just come so far. They can do so many things. They have some that are really non-invasive that can target different brown spots and kind of treat them underneath the skin so that as your skin sloughs off, they'll heal and there's no downtime. So there's a lot of really neat things happening with lasers. I do always suggest.
going to a med spa for that because a lot of people do lasers that just have some training and a little bit of oversight so I do recommend going to a med spa for that kind of thing but really sunscreen is the huge thing and one other thing is really important is if you're using good products and you're not exfoliating your skin your products are just
Rita (07:36.133)
treating the dead skin that sits on top of your epidermis. So you really need to have a good exfoliation. Good products like a vitamin C serum is really wonderful because that helps with cell turnover, it helps with brightness. So if you exfoliate once or twice a week, kind of get into a good routine, use some good serums. That's really, really helpful because there's a lot of...
hyaluronic acid and peptides and things that your body produces itself, but it just slows down. But they come in a good serum now that you can really use to help your body. And there's also a lot of good supplements like omegas and that the diet is really has a big connection to our skin. So I'm not a nutritionist, but that's something I always recommend people to take a look at is their diet.
Miriam Bulcher (08:25.55)
Mm-hmm. Yeah, I had an interesting experience a couple years ago. We moved into a house and we didn't have the water tester right away and all of a sudden my skin was like level a thousand dryness and I was like, you know when I remember talking to my own facialist and I was like, I don't know I understand like and I switched my facial cream but it like wasn't enough and then we had our
tested and it turns out like I was just drinking hard water and it was like sucking all the minerals out of my own body and causing that dryness and as soon as we had like a reverse osmosis system installed my skin like went back to normal and I was like my gosh like you know such a simple thing as water right like the quality of the water that you're drinking like I was dumbfounded slash reminded of like just how you know like small but really important things makes such a huge difference when you're consuming them on a regular day-to-day
Rita (09:02.705)
Yeah.
Miriam Bulcher (09:16.768)
So yeah, like just absolutely everything that you're saying is like, you know, absolutely on point. And I'm like, oh yeah, absolutely. I love that you don't offer peels in the summer because I know even for me, like literally the other day I had done an AHA the night before it was Mike's fully getting night. And then the next morning I forgot to put sunscreen on. Thankfully there's another client of mine who has, she just moved like right around the corner from my studio. I literally stepped in and I was like, do you have sunscreen? I literally need sunscreen like right now. And thankfully she did.
Rita (09:41.764)
Yeah.
Miriam Bulcher (09:44.8)
So now I have some powder that I keep in my purse, which I think you sell that as well, the Eminence, like the push-up powder, which is freaking amazing. Yes, absolutely highly recommend for anybody who like, because, okay, so talk about the sunscreen though, because I, that's something also that I learned that it's not just like a one and done situation throughout the day.
Rita (09:50.555)
Yes, it's wonderful.
Rita (10:06.085)
Right, and that's why the powder sunscreen is great because even if you go to the beach and lather up, you know, you're coming in and out of the water and stuff, or you want to go to lunch afterwards and you're going to sit outside in a cafe, you can just do the powder, you can layer it heavily, you can...
touch up your skin. doesn't look like you're wearing makeup, but you have that protection on. And I also remind people to do their hands because, you know, I never did that when I was growing up and I never thought of it, but now I do. So and of course your decollete and your neck, because really aging starts here, kind of moves up. So don't forget that. But and like the Eminence powder sunscreen and there's other powder sunscreens, but I love Eminence. It's very light. It's very light, reflective. So it kind of gives you a little glow, a little
It doesn't look dry, it won't settle into any fine lines or that kind of thing. So, but yeah, and you can layer it on and it's just really good because we all get busy and forget during the day. They also have nice sunscreen that protects from the blue light of computers and that if you're on a computer all day, people don't realize that's also doing damage to your skin. So, yeah, so that's important too.
Miriam Bulcher (11:17.858)
Yeah, I love that. That's a really good point because I mean, things are just so different now with all the electronics and the light, like light in general and just UV is like not only is you be stronger, but like so I love that you brought it up because it sounds like even if you're a no makeup person, like the skin and how you're approaching, like whether you're working at home or it sounds like, know, just having the tools which you can help people with all those tools, because for those that are watching on video, you'll see Rita has a gorgeous like, you know, product display behind her. She's definitely, you know, going to be able to
give you those customized recommendations, which I feel like, at least for me, made it so much easier instead of just like walking through a target, trying to understand terminology or like, you know what I mean? Like it can just be so overwhelming whether you're going to support or whatever it might be and be like, I don't know.
like there's like thousands of products out there and just knowing like what is your skin type? What works for you? Like you are there to eliminate all that frustration and it is so well worth it just to be like, great, here's your skin type. What is your lifestyle? What are your goals? And like, this is what you're trying to achieve. So love that. Let's talk about what an ideal skincare routine should look like for a woman over 50. I know we've already talked about sunscreen. I know we've talked about the blue light, but just walk us through like, is it a twice a
Rita (12:07.453)
Great.
Miriam Bulcher (12:31.638)
routine? Is it once a day? Like, what do you recommend?
Rita (12:35.611)
The one thing I like to say is nobody needs 37 steps. I mean, if you want to have 37 steps, that's great. But I really like to take into account because some people don't want a huge routine. So kind of take lifestyle into account and think of like the products. The best routine is one that I'm going to do, you know, so a good cleanser. And I always tell people, cleanse morning and night.
When I wear makeup, I do an oil cleanse first and then another cleanser. A good toner is wonderful. Eminence has some great products that help refine your pores so they don't look as large. Pores don't actually open and close, but they can appear smaller, so they've got a great pineapple toner. So just knowing what people's issues are. So cleanse, tone. I love a good serum. I always tell people, serum should be your best friend over 50.
over 30, over 40. It's just you get more bang for your buck. It doesn't take a lot. You you pad it into your damp skin and then you can put your moisturizer over it. So basically, and then your sunscreen. So basically that would be a a daily routine and then one to three times a week, depending on your skin, a good exfoliation.
And depending on, like I work on brightening my skin, so I use a night cream moisturizer instead of a regular moisturizer that has some brightening agents, some licorice root, that type of thing in it. So I use that at night most of the time. And then depending on what other issues you have,
In the winter, my skin gets so, so dry, so I use kind of a heavy emollient night cream then. So just kind of tweaking is really important, finding out what works for your skin and what doesn't. And I really like to have people come in for a really good deep exfoliation and kind of go over with the products they're using once in a while. So on a regular basis, it's nice to just check in with people and...
Rita (14:43.025)
Yeah, do a really good deep exfoliation is really important because like I say, it encourages collagen production, gets rid of all that dead skin that's built up on your skin.
anything.
Miriam Bulcher (14:58.05)
I don't think so. mean, you talked about wash, toners. I think you, from what I know at least anyways, yeah, I think you like nailed it. I love that you talked about not having something complicated because it really can be overwhelming to say the least of like, yeah.
Rita (15:11.037)
Really?
Miriam Bulcher (15:16.472)
That's perfect. let's talk about, shoot, there was something else that when you were talking about, I was like, we need to expand on that, shoot. Now I gotta go and see my notes and be like, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Okay, so let's talk about why.
people should. I wanted to use the word need. That's how I think of it, at least anyways. But like need someone like you in their life, because I know for me, like, geez, let's see, I had a skincare routine. I think I went to a makeup store and this lady, this was in England because my sister lived there and she literally scared me into a skincare routine. I think I was like 13 at the time. And I just stuck with like a basic, you know, whatever, like up until I was, geez, I don't even know. I started working at Sephora in my 20s.
And then that's when really things started changing because I was like, I started learning so much more about like different products and different moisturizers and things like that. things really took a turn when I had someone like you come into my life and I was like, what? Like the customization just took it to another level. So talk to us about the differences that you've seen in clients, like when they come and see you and they see you consistently.
Rita (16:26.163)
yeah, when clients come in on a regular basis, like I have a lot of clients that come quarterly. I have a lot of clients that come every six to eight weeks and I can really see like I like to take before pictures or before they come in, when they come in for their first facial and then if we're working on like lightening the skin or tightening the skin.
We can kind of take pictures like six months down the road and say, look at this, this is working and that kind of thing. So you can actually see, I mean, things take time and a lot of times you don't notice it until you see a before and after photo. But I like to kind of tweak, see what's working, what's not working for them. A lot of times people will be like, yeah, I found this hyaluronic acid or whatever, you know, the buzzword is online. And I say, great, how are you using it? And then...
They tell me and I say, OK, that's good, but you really need to put a moisturizer over it. know, things you might not know. Or if they're using a retinol, know, retinols are a whole different thing. There's different kinds of retinols. Some people get them and they just start using them every day and basically burn their skin off, kind of. So you really need to keep healthy and have a have a routine that you know why you're using what you're using.
There's a lot of misinformation on the internet. There's a lot of great information on the internet. So I just kind of like to see what people are doing, what they're using. The same with products. You know, a lot of people don't know that if you look at a product that you buy at the drugstore and it says, you know, water, blah, blah. So that means water is the first ingredient. If it says it has niacinamide in it and niacinamide is number 72, there's not a lot that you're getting of that. So, you know, it kind of goes in how much.
in order of how much of each ingredient is in the product. So you have to be really careful because they can say that on the label, but and then you get into ingredients and there's just a lot and it's very overwhelming. So I like to say, you know, like if I know we're working on something else, they will just look for this ingredient. You know, if you're looking at something you think it looks great, does it actually have a lot of vitamin C in it?
Rita (18:36.627)
that kind of thing and I can help with that. So I love to do that stuff. I love to look over what people are using and suggest things that might be a little better or a little more cost effective. Yeah, so it's good to just kind of check in. And then also if they do have any like, all of a sudden they have big acne forming and they never had it before, you know, we can talk about what's changed, what are you doing differently? And then...
Miriam Bulcher (18:48.62)
Yeah.
Rita (19:03.795)
Also with the change of seasons is just a huge thing, especially in Wisconsin. Winter is so brutal. So that's a big thing to kind of say, okay, we really need to add in some oils or some heavy masks at night, that kind of thing. So maybe not as much exfoliation in the summer, that type of thing. So just to kind of like check in and see what you're doing and...
Really, I feel like my facials are all customized. Like when you come in, you're not getting the same thing as the same facial as the person that just came in ahead of you, because that's not what you need. So we talk about what you need.
and can customize it and then see what works and what doesn't work. So if I can see your progress the next time you come in, I kind of know, okay, this is great, you know, and you're using the products right. Sometimes people come in and they're not using the products right, or they're using way too much. You know, if you buy a jar of moisturizer and you want another jar in a month, yeah, I could sell you a jar in a month, but you're really overusing it. And I'll tell you that you're just kind of wasting your money if you're doing that because a little goes a long way if you have a good pro.
product.
Miriam Bulcher (20:13.964)
Yeah, absolutely. So really, and this is how I see it, is like seeing somebody like you really eliminates the frustration and it really like just streamlines and clarifies your needs, your budget, your and it really just like at least in my opinion, takes the frustration out of skincare. And you know what I mean? Like it really gives you that. At least that's what happened for me. Like it gave me a boost of confidence, like over time, because I was like, my gosh, like and over time I needed to wear less and less makeup.
Rita (20:43.527)
Yep.
Miriam Bulcher (20:43.938)
And it was so great because I was like, my gosh, this is so much more functional. so like huge. And that's why I was like, Rita has to come on because we need to, we need to, I know this information, but like there's so many women, you know what I mean? That would love to have this information. And I'm sure you see that every time a new client comes in, like they're just like, my gosh, like, thank God I found you. And you know what I mean? to, it's like having somebody, you know, do your own custom customized, little, it's like wardrobe styling, but for the skin, that's kind of
Rita (20:57.171)
you.
Rita (21:03.987)
sure.
Miriam Bulcher (21:13.808)
how I see it is like someone's just gonna tell you like this is what looks great on you and it's perfect. Let's expand more on the blue light because I use, I have a red light mask and it does have blue in it. So I didn't know that. So that was great. And I know quite a bit about the red light but I know that it's kind of like come up a little bit more like in the industry. So talk a little bit about what that is and just how it plays in to like not only healing but maybe prevention and other stuff.
Rita (21:41.511)
Yeah. So, you know, it was developed by NASA. So fabulous, the whole led light. the different, the different colors of light go on into different layers of your skin. so the red goes down like 8,000 nanometers or something. I'd have to double check, but so it really goes down into your cells. And like I say, it helps the mitochondria speed up again, which naturally slows down as we age. The blue is for acne. It kills that bacteria that
that creates acne and also both of those colors help heal. So if you do have past breakouts, it helps them heal much faster. The neat thing is that when it first came out, you would have to sit for like a half hour. Now they have masks that have the same amount of jewels, the same.
you get the same effect in like 10 minutes a day and you can do it every day for 10 minutes and your cells absorb that and it works with your body's own chemicals. like speeds up your body's own healing properties. So I love blue light and red lights. I think they've come a long way. The one thing to be careful of is that you're getting a good product if you
Like I had a lady that bought one online and she brought it in and she had spent like $200 and it was just like a light with a red cover on it. So you really have to be careful because that's not doing anything for you. You have to, you know, there's a lot of good, there's Omnilux, there's Saluma, there's LightStim, there's a lot of good, good products out there, but you just have to be careful. And if you're not sure, me or ask somebody that knows about them or that has one that uses them.
Miriam Bulcher (23:26.574)
Absolutely.
Rita (23:27.411)
But yeah, I love it. I have the Omnilux and I have the red light one and I use it every day when I'm thinking of it. I'll just strap it on, watch the news, you know, it's 10 minutes a day, so.
Miriam Bulcher (23:39.362)
Yep, absolutely. I love that so much. Yeah, I have one and I felt like that also made a huge difference for me as well. Like I started using it pretty religiously and all of a sudden it was like skin texture improved, everything like firm like everything brightness. I was like, what is the sorcery?
Rita (23:49.704)
yeah.
Rita (23:55.783)
Yeah, you don't. The only time you don't want to use that is if you have melasma. Anything that creates heat in the skin, not good. But that's a whole other thing.
Miriam Bulcher (24:06.37)
Yep, absolutely. What other, say a woman is like really working on making sure that she's not...
She wants to do, let's say the wrinkles are already there, but she really wants to make sure that they're not gonna get deeper or any of those things. And this is a very broad subject, so it might be hard to kind of narrow it down. But are there any other outside of the things that we've talked about that you're like, okay, here's what I would recommend if you're like, this is a primary skin concern, and they're just really bothered by the texture on their skin.
Rita (24:37.331)
well, everybody's skin has texture. Everybody uses filters now online, so you just have to remember that skin does actually have texture. So I guess just the different products that you use can make a difference. I definitely recommend some serums if you're concerned about how large your pores look or if your texture has that orange peel kind of feeling. A lot of that would depend on what kind of exfoliation you use because there's chemical exfoliators and there's physical
scrubs exfoliation so if you have a lot of like the orange peel skin it's really good to use a combination so that the red light the blue light there's a lot of things you can do at home that aren't super costly there's face yoga I've seen a lot of really great
results with that. So that's kind of nice. There's what are they called frownies? Have you heard of frownies? They've been around forever. So basically like if you have 11s or that you put this patch on at night and then you take it off in the morning and you put it on the way you want your skin to freeze.
and then you take it off at night. And like, if I have something big coming up, I'll start doing that two weeks before and it really helps. So if you're really trying to work on not letting those things get back, there's frownies, there's silicone masks like that, that you can put on. There's also Gua Sha, which is like a Gua Sha stone that you can do at home to get the lymph moving and kind of work on chiseling and lifting everything up. You know, you want to lift everything up. So there's that. And then,
like I do a firming peptide facial, which if you do that once, you'll notice your skin feels tight and glowy for about five days, but if you do that like monthly, you'll really begin to see a difference because you're definitely not gonna get any worse. And of course sunscreen, the big thing. Yeah.
Miriam Bulcher (26:36.076)
Yeah, I love that. my gosh. Great recommendations. Let's talk about what happens when you start to see a facialist and you haven't before. Some of the, I don't want to call them negative, but what people might see as like more frustration points because, know, especially if you haven't done deep exfoliants before, you know what I mean? You can kind of go through a little bit of like the skin goes through a hard learning phase, you know, because it's like trying to cleanse out all this dirt and there's some changes that come along with it. So talk a little bit
about that process of like, you haven't gone to see a facialist before and then you're gonna go see one on a regular basis, some things that some people might experience that they might be like, you know, like on tour about.
Rita (27:18.611)
Sure. Well, some people find, some people come in and I always say, what do you think your skin type is? You know, and some, a of people say, oh, I'm very sensitive to products. I have very sensitive skin, but really what they've been using is strip the barrier on their skin. everything burns. Everything with any active ingredient is going to hurt or burn. So in that case, you know,
I try to manage expectations and say, this is why you're feeling this. And so we're going to be really gentle, soothing, calming till we repair your barrier. And then we can work on acne or aging or whatever other things, but we really need to repair your skin barrier and get it healthy.
So that can be frustrating for people because maybe their skin really isn't that sensitive. It's just been sensitized from the products they're using. Also, some people kind of purge after their first facial. It's not unusual if you have a big buildup, if you've been using like waxy, really occlusive products and you have a big buildup of that in your skin and you start taking that off. It's not unusual that.
You feel like, my skin looks dull, you know? Well, it's going through that phase of kind of regenerating. You have to wait. We're treating, we're trying to treat the deep skin so that the new skin that comes up is going to look better. It's going to look tighter and brighter. So that can be frustrating just knowing that it's not an immediate fix. You know, it takes time.
seeing what works and a lot of people don't know what to expect when they come in for a facial. You know, I usually have people take their top and their bra off and put on a gown. I step out and but if you're not comfortable with that, that's fine because I do the neck and the decollete which very important. Don't forget that.
Rita (29:05.647)
So, and there's, usually do a lot of massage with facials because it's really good to get the circulation going, to get the blood flowing and coming to the surface. So that's kind of a nice relaxing thing too, I think. But if you're you know, expecting it might be like, why is she massaging my skin so much? But it really, it really does make a difference. It really does help. So I hope I answered that.
Miriam Bulcher (29:34.414)
Yeah, absolutely. I'm glad that you mentioned about the purge and about the sensitivity because yeah, I mean, and that's the whole point, right? It's like to get to a place where it feels easier than it has been, right? Like without the frustration. So at least in my opinion, like going through the purging, going through, you know what I mean? Like some of the discomfort of like getting from point A to point B is so well worth it. I've experienced that and I feel like, you know, the clients that I've seen that started
Rita (29:58.227)
Right. Right.
Miriam Bulcher (30:04.388)
you know, using skincare products and things like that, whether it was through my recommendation or whether they went and saw someone, it really is worth the effort. And at least in my opinion, I feel like it is so highly worth the investment because, you know, like your face is something that I think a lot of people feel very attached to, right? As you would, because it's something that's very key to who you are. And so I feel like just putting in that investment, like you said, I love that you mentioned in the beginning, right? Like the different options for people to come see you.
and the six to eight weeks and the different options because yeah, mean, and if anything, talk a little bit about what are some options? if someone's just like, I just want a consultation. Like I kind of want to give you to give me like a quick look at my skin and then kind of go from that. Like, do you have an option like that?
Rita (30:53.233)
I do. I'll do a consultation for, usually it takes about a half hour. I'll have you come in, fill out the intake forms, and then we kind of talk about your skin and what you're looking for. I'll cleanse your skin and look at it under the magnifying light and give you some ideas and I'll tell you what I'm seeing. You tell me what you want to work on or what you don't like or what you like about your skin and we kind of go from there. And then I...
I'll usually suggest for a starting point, a one hour custom facial. And the consultation is $25 and I take that $25 off of your first facial. So really it doesn't cost you anything. And a lot of times I like to give people a couple samples of products because if you're washing your face with a bar of soap,
and not using moisturizer. You know, I can give you a sample of a moisturizer in a cleanser and say, try this for a week and call me and you will be amazed the difference just that will make. mean, people are shocked, but so it's really good to to kind of talk to make sure we're on the same page. You know, a lot of people are like, OK, I don't want to commit to a huge thing or I don't want anything too invasive. And I totally get that.
It's kind of a step-by-step building on process. And I like to look at your skin too, just to kind of give you suggestions on.
on what you can do in the meantime or what you can do at home, you know, like the face yoga or the whatever. It's just fun to talk to other women and see what they're doing and what they're looking for.
Miriam Bulcher (32:36.803)
Yeah.
Absolutely. Oh my gosh, I love that so much. Well, I'm going to put your information in the description that way people can go and schedule because I feel like if anything, highly recommend the consultation. And I mean, who doesn't want slash need a facial ever. I feel like that's something you can never really truly get enough of. And so I feel like this is super, super informative. I feel like you touched upon all the main points, at least that, again, I'm familiar with and I've experienced that have made such a huge tremendous difference in just my own skin.
care and turnover and all that good stuff. Is there anything that you feel like is super important to like a skincare routine for a woman over 50 that we haven't discussed or mentioned at all?
Rita (33:18.929)
I think we covered everything I was thinking about. Yeah, mostly sunscreen and good ingredients. I think we covered everything that I can think of.
Miriam Bulcher (33:30.466)
Yeah.
Yeah, that's perfect. It's I love that you said the quality of the ingredients because I know that the vitamin C like the quality of the vitamin C I read somewhere that like it can like vary so drastically to the point where like depending on what you're getting, it's literally doing nothing. And because I like of the acid and like the integrity of acids are very hard to like maintain when it's being, you know, put together by a chemist. And so, yeah, it's so wild. Like the whole skincare world is like just
It's like entering an alternate universe. Like once you start, you know, meeting somebody like you and being able to talk about it.
Rita (34:07.249)
vitamin C. I'm glad you brought that up because there are different types of vitamin C, different formulations, and if your vitamin C is bad, if it's brown, if it's turning orange or smelling, it's oxidized already and it's damaging your skin. So throw that out. But yeah, a lot of people think they can't use vitamin C because they feel like it's, they're sensitive to it, but it's the vitamin C they're using. But anyway, I go on.
Miriam Bulcher (34:35.17)
Yeah, no, I love that. And I love that you brought that up because again, just opening, you know, the whole point of this conversation was just to open the door, right, to kind of make it simplified, give women the information and be like, OK, yes, you are the expert. You're going to know. Just go in and get all your needs met with Rita. So, yeah, I'm so thankful for you sharing your expertise and your knowledge. And I think I mean, it was great refresh for me to hear all these things and a good reminder on the sunscreen. I love that you mentioned them.
Rita (34:57.683)
Thank you.
Miriam Bulcher (35:05.174)
times because I know for me I like keep one on like you know my entry in my home that way in case I forget and I have one by my vanity and I have one in my purse and I have it's like you can never really have enough sunscreen and that also reminded me when you were saying about your adeclotage and I'm like yeah right I really should be like explaining because I have a spray and I'm like I should really spray down there too so like good yes very very good reminders amazing awesome are there any other preferred methods of people reaching out to you should they reach out to you by your
Rita (35:16.551)
