Black pioneers are part of our heritage. These wonderful men and women lived through the trials of their society at the time. Some were slaves, some were free blacks, but they all experienced the attitude and conditions of pre and post emancipation. Elijah Able, the first black member of the church, was ordained and Elder and a Seventy in the Melchizedek priesthood. He served 3 missions. He faithfully accepted changing policies as they directly influenced his worship, but not his testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ or his service in the kingdom of God on earth. Today some people have allowed those black pioneer’s situations to take them from the covenant path, yet the faithful black members and pioneers who lived these experiences remained faithful through these policies and throughout their life.
