Deadly First Date of Criminal Justice Student: Sade Robinson

Kristen Roberts Season 1 Episode 8

The murder of 19-year-old Sade Robinson stands as a stark warning about the dangers that can lurk behind dating profiles. When this ambitious Milwaukee criminal justice student went missing after a first date with Maxwell Anderson in April 2024, few could have imagined the horror that would unfold.

Despite taking nearly every precaution—meeting in public, sharing her location through tracking apps, sending updates to friends—Sade fell victim to a predator who had meticulously planned her murder. What makes this case particularly heartbreaking is that Sade missed just one crucial step that might have saved her life: she never ran a background check that would have revealed Anderson's extensive history of violence and domestic abuse.

As Sade's dismembered remains began appearing throughout Milwaukee, the community was gripped by fear of a possible serial killer. Yet it was Sade herself who would help solve her own murder through the digital breadcrumbs she left behind. Surveillance footage, location data, and phone records painted a damning timeline of Anderson's movements, including disposing of body parts at multiple locations and setting Sade's car ablaze.

The evidence recovered from Anderson's home—including a prepared basement with plastic tarping, deleted photos of Sade's body, and research on "what not to mix with bleach"—revealed a level of premeditation that shocked even seasoned investigators. A witness even testified that Anderson had shared his murder plans a month before carrying them out.

This episode explores not only the tragic details of Sade's murder but also the broader context of violence against women of color in Milwaukee, where Black women are 20 times more likely to be murdered than their white counterparts. Through her mother's advocacy work with Sade's Voice Foundation, this young woman's legacy continues in the fight for justice for all missing and murdered BIPOC women.

Remember that running background checks isn't paranoia—it could be the difference between life and death. Support the mission at SadesVoiceFoundation.com and share this critical safety information with anyone who dates online.

Speaker 1:

You're listening to All that Is Hidden True Crime. I'm your host, kristen Roberts. This podcast contains strong language and discussions of sensitive topics that may not be suitable for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised. Today's case brings us to Milwaukee, wisconsin, where Sade Robinson's 19-year-old wife was taken on a first date, and it was just last year, on April 1st 2024.

Speaker 1:

If you've ever online dated, or if you have friends, loved ones or family who do so, this is always your worst fear. According to a Forbes article, dating Statistics and Facts in 2025, online dating is still very popular, with nearly three in 10 adults saying they have used a dating site or app and more than 40% stating that online dating has made dating easier for them. So this story is not to send chills through your online swiping fingers. It's just to keep you cautious, a cautionary tell, and to advise you to do the one thing that Sade did not do. The one thing because she did so many things right.

Speaker 1:

Run a background check If you don't have an app for that phone. A friend, I know it can be pricey to do a one-time run, but if you're online dating, you're going to do several of them, so just pay for a subscription or call someone who does pay for one. If you know some other people who are dating, I do it for people all the time with Truthfinder. I've even had people say someone's dating my son and they're a little sketchy, someone's dating my daughter and they're a little sketchy. Could you run a background check? So I would do it for reasons outside of my own online dating. But when I was online dating, I discovered several men lying about their age, their financial status, their divorce status. I even confronted one guy about his massive age lie and he was actually more angry about the stop sign I said he had ran than he was lying about his age. It just shows you a lot about people's pasts and patterns and, yes, I guess all these people deserve love too, but they don't deserve you, dear listener. I said that creepy like the series on Netflix, you the book, so hopefully you get that joke.

Speaker 1:

Milwaukee, wisconsin If you don't see it as a huge vacation spot for yourself, then you probably don't know how much about it, other than it's the largest city in Wisconsin. It's located on the western shore of Lake Michigan and boasts stunning water front views, which can lead to varying degrees of financial diversity. Those who live along the water are pretty loaded. If you move more into the city and beyond you'll find lower income families. Milwaukee is called Brew City and has a German influence due to the original settlers. Is called Brew City and has a German influence due to the original settlers. You may be familiar with Milwaukee from attending Summerfest, the largest music festival in the world, and there are tons of parks, some that will play a part in the story.

Speaker 1:

Unfortunately, and for more cynical notoriety, milwaukee was the home of Jeffrey Dahmer, also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal. He murdered 17 men and boys between 1978 to 1991. Given that most of his victims were brown or black, even as late as last year, when Sade was found, the locals were screaming serial killer, not to mention a much closer look found, the locals were screaming serial killer, not to mention a much closer look began about the percentage of murder that occurs between Black and Caucasian groups in that city. This was a state where Black women were 20 times more likely to be murdered than their white counterparts, according to a 2024 Columbia University report, around the time of Sade's death. But in living there in 2024, it's not like a beautiful, successful, 19-year-old, busy college student like Sade sat around thinking about being murdered for living there. Sade held two jobs and even rented her own apartment and paid for her own car. She was, ironically, studying criminal justice at Milwaukee Area Technical College and was thinking about joining the Air Force. Her mom raised her and her sister as a single mother and described her as independent. Sade even loved taking solo trips. She had visited New Orleans, atlanta and even Jamaica alone. Even though she did this, her friends and family were hooked into her whereabouts through Life360 and Find my Phone. All of this will become evidence as the case plays out, and it's a good time to talk about this case because most of it's played out by now not all of it, but a lot of it, and I've heard other podcasts where some pieces are missing, especially about the killer, so we have more details about the story than those that initially covered it.

Speaker 1:

But the point here you know this could happen to anyone. This couldn't be a smarter, cultured, studied individual. She took all the precautions on her first date, like meeting in public and even sending a Snapchat to a friend while she was on the date, plus leaving the phone tracking on. You would think that she would be safe, right, I do think the more you do alone and nothing too crazy happens, because crazy stuff always happens to you when you're young and beautiful, that's for sure. But I think the safer you feel to maybe not share the name of your date or gathering background information Even a criminal justice student didn't do that and there sat all Sade needed to know. But what makes this case so insane? Most people try to hide the crime, the murder scene, keep themselves out of jail. This killer was the dumbest of the dumb. Cameras are everywhere in 2024. Phone tracking you know it. So why leave the phone on or in play? This person had to have wanted to get caught. So let's begin with the day it happened, april Fool's Day. Maybe a fool for love, as Sade shared with a building admin in her apartment that she was excited about her first date later that afternoon. From that point forward, her whereabouts would be tracked by cameras everywhere she went.

Speaker 1:

The whole story is put together with footage, phone text and phone location tracking. The timeline started when the two started texting to meet for a date. Sade sent the 34-year-old remember she's only 19,. Bartender remember she's 19 and can't drink his name, maxwell Anderson a text at 4.15 pm and the two arranged to go to a couple establishments in town at which Anderson had previously worked. Now she said she was feeling seafood. So the first place they went to was the Twisted Fisherman Restaurant. More information gathered that Anderson was actually picking up a W-2 from this location, since he used to work there. While they were eating, they are seen having dinner at the twisted fishermen, as Sade often proclaimed how much she loves seafood, and this is where she sent a snapshot a snapchat to a friend. We think of food and of course, those disappear, so nothing seemed quite fishy.

Speaker 1:

At this point, no pun intended, I will put the video footage in our Facebook page and the link to join is in the footnotes of this episode. You will see them dining together for over an hour. It is said that Sade would actually go to some of these bars because they were known for not checking ID or they contributed to underage drinking. Overall, according to the Wisconsin 12 News, almost a year to date, sade's family will sue both bars and the details of the suit will give you a picture of what happened while they were at both places. So I would do it for reasons outside of my own online dating. But when I was online dating I discovered several men lying about their age, their financial status, their divorce status. It is said that Sade would actually go to some of these bars because they were known for not checking ID and they contributed to underage drinking. According to the Wisconsin 12 News, almost a year to date, sade's family would sue both bars and the detail of the suits will give you a picture of what happened while they were at both places. The lawsuit filed in Milwaukee County, states twisted fishermen and dukes on the water served 19-year-old Sade Robinson underage and did not ask for her ID. Surveillance photos shared in previous criminal court records show Robinson and the man accused of killing her, maxwell Anderson, at Twisted Fisherman. The new lawsuit claiming wrongful death states that while at Twisted Fisherman, quote video shows the minor being served shots and there is a witness that she left the bar impaired from the alcohol and with Maxwell Anderson who then murdered her. As a result of the bar's negligence, shot A Robinson was over-served, rendered defenseless and ultimately killed unquote. So now you know they left together and you're thinking I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't have drinks or do shots with a stranger.

Speaker 1:

Someone came forward after Sade's death claiming she had also gone on a date with Maxwell just two months before and he asked her to come home with him. And he drugged her drink months before and he asked her to come home with him and he drugged her drink. She came to the conclusion based on the lack of alcohol she had. She said he also spoke about growing psychedelics in his basement, so we don't know if he slipped anything in her drink at this point. In any case, sade's phone records will end up showing that she did go back to his place.

Speaker 1:

Sade had not told her mom about the date, but they did talk daily. She had told her friends but did not share his name. If you online date very much, you know that's because your friends can't keep track of the names and no one is special until they make it past the first date or so. So let's just face it. That's probably why the next afternoon Sade did not show up at her job at the pizza shuttle, which was very unlike her. Some say her co-workers called the police, some say it was friends, but it was later that night. Her mother, sheena Scarborough, wasn't notified until two days later and once they spoke to her she was able to assist them with tracking Sade's phone. Additionally, sade's friend was able to provide data from Life360, a location-based services app on her phone which allows users to share their location. That app showed the phone was near Anderson's home on the city's south side on the night of the date and then at Warnemont Park on the morning of April 2nd 2024. Later that morning, the 2020 Honda Civic belonging to Robinson is found on fire on the 1800 block of North 29th Street. A witness said he saw a male exit the vehicle and toss a lighter into it before walking away. Surveillance video footage from a Milwaukee County Transit system bus, also from that morning, showed Anderson boarding a nearby bus shortly after Robinson's car was set on fire. He was wearing a hoodie and a tan backpack the same outfit that the witness described.

Speaker 1:

Meanwhile, the Milwaukee public was being terrified to death as they were finding body parts throughout the city Even before Sade's reported missing. To be accurate, around three and a half hours before, on April 2nd, a severed leg was found in or near Lake Michigan in Warnemont Park, sparking an investigation. A person meeting a friend at the park found the leg on the beach. The leg was described as looking as if it belonged to a black woman. It was severed and this is the part that breaks my heart. The toes were painted pink. Residents are screaming serial killer because of what we already discussed and well you know body parts.

Speaker 1:

On April 6th the city's north side police find a human foot that appears to match the leg that was found on the beach in the north area Near Robinson's car is. Leg that was found on the beach in the north area Near Robinson's car is where this was found. Other human flesh was also found in the area. They also discovered several more body parts the next day, including near 31st and Walnut Streets. Sade's mom, family and friends are learning about these findings and especially stressing because the leg was found where her phone last pinged but authorities were not confirming that it was shot A. Her mother felt something was off and was preparing herself for bad news. Family and police had been searching for parts and the family did find a blanket from her car lying near the area where the foot was found. It was apparent it was shot A, but it was not confirmed until weeks later. While they waited Before the confirmation, authorities started investigating and they knew they had to get Maxwell Anderson off the streets immediately.

Speaker 1:

A search of his home on April 4th revealed blood on a bed and walls leading towards the basement where detectives found multiple containers of gasoline. There was a lot of odd things in his home, including a sex dungeon in the basement and there were holes in his backyard that he had told friends and neighbors that he was digging up because he wanted an extended basement, which made no sense because the basement that he had was very spacious. He was arrested following a traffic stop in his neighborhood that same day. They were hold him while they gather more evidence until April 12th where he's formally charged. He remains in custody all that time after not making the $10 million bond.

Speaker 1:

That time, after not making the $10 million bond, on April 18th, police recover Sade's arm and torso that have appeared to wash up on a shore and were discovered in a remote line tree side of a beach in South Milwaukee which was more than 50 miles away from where her leg was discovered. Why did he distribute body parts all over the place? How strange. Now I was listening to Nancy Grace cover this and she, as usual, was yelling at one of her correspondents for not saying what she wanted to hear. One of her psychoanalyst doctors was saying he did it to strike fear in the public and was enjoying the thought of terrorizing the city. That's a theory. Nancy did not like that theory, so the doctor changed their tune and said it was sexually gratifying. It is odd because he was seen on camera in Sade's car going to many of these locations. He had to know he was going to be caught, but then why did he text her the following morning asking how her day at work was going?

Speaker 1:

On May 10th a memorial service was held for Sade at the Baird Center in Milwaukee, although the Milwaukee Journal reported it was Anderson's Memorial. I find these mistakes all the time. It's killing me. Everyone wore pink and tied pink bows and ribbons around the ceremony and released doves in her honor. The next day Sade's second arm washed up on the beach in Waukegan, illinois. Her poor mother just could not catch a break. On May 24th, anderson's attorney, anthony Cotton, sent a letter to Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Mark Sanders asking that his client be furnished with a laptop. Are you kidding me? Of course the judge ruled no on this.

Speaker 1:

On June the 3rd, sade's family sues Anderson for wrongful death. Some of the suit claimed Maxwell's dad removed evidence from the home, including what have shot his fingers, but the finger was never proven. He did, however it was proven enter the home and clean some items out. No one knows why he did that, and he did get into a bit of trouble for that. So he was trying to help his son out there, which might explain why Maxwell is the way he is.

Speaker 1:

On August the 5th a new judge was ordered to preside over the case and it went to the local, milwaukee native Judge, laura Crivello. The trial was delayed until May of this year, so the trial literally just happened a few months ago from this recording. In the meantime, another memorial service for Sade was canceled in February after the county board reported a quote flurry of racist, abusive emails over the city paying for it. So in April the judge selection began and on May 27th the trial for Maxwell began and he was charged for first-degree intentional homicide, mutilation of a corpse, hiding a corpse and arson. There is strangely, in different states. The mutilation of a corpse can carry a very large sentence, up to 25 years. So I just want to let you know. If you stumble upon a dead body, do nothing to it. Okay, just call 911. The judge spared Sade's family multiple trials and combined the charges all together.

Speaker 1:

Of course, maxwell pleaded not guilty to the charges, so he did choose 44-year-old Anthony Cotton as his defense lawyer. If he sounds familiar, he represented Morgan Geiser, one of the defendants in the Slenderman case. This was a 2014 case involving two 12-year-old girls who stabbed their classmate and friend and left her for dead in the park. The girl survived the stabbing, so if you don't know how that case turned out, they were found guilty by reason of mental disease or defect and ordered to a mental health institute for decades long. But in 2021, one of them was released and the one that Maxwell's lawyer defended was approved for conditional release in 2025.

Speaker 1:

So during the trial, maxwell's background comes out. Overall, it sounds like he was in trouble for quite a bit for his temper. He pleaded guilty in 2014 to disorderly conduct. After a family fight In 2015 in Door County, prosecutors charged him with disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property and intimidating a witness. He pleaded guilty on these charges, so he's used to pleading guilty. He's just not going to do it here. In 2019, another disorderly conduct charge for a fight in Milwaukee. Court records show he pleaded guilty to that charge. In 2012, he pleaded guilty to operating while under the influence, and this was the second time he was caught. According to court records, all of this would have shown up on his background check. By the way, the first one was described as domestic abuse. You see that one and you know you're out. So think seeing that would have spooked her from the state for sure.

Speaker 1:

Anderson's former girlfriend took the stand and testified about a secret beach. Anderson used to take her to the beach whose name he would not tell her in case they were ever separated was Mortimer Park. Detective John Glow I'm not sure if I'm pronouncing that correctly, but we'll go with that testified that when he had Anderson's girlfriend lead him to the secret beach she led him to the spot on the beach where Sade Robinson's remains were found led him to the spot on the beach where Sade Robinson's remains were found. On Anderson's phone they found modified photos of the last clothing Robinson was seen wearing specifically her tan underwear and light wash ripped jeans. There was also a screen shot, a graphic found, titled what Not to Mix with Bleach. They found photos of Robinson exposed face down on Anderson's couch. Anderson had his hand on her breast. In one of the photos the breast that is exposed is the one that was missing from her torso and has not been found to this day. He had deleted the photos, but they were rediscovered. At least he didn't put the phone in the wash like Travis Alexander's killer. Deleting does not work. People and the guy should know this by now. The courtroom is distraught and many are leaving the room in tears. Both of Robinson's parents had to leave the room at this point. Anderson was also seen to have watched an animated horror show called Love, death and Robots on Netflix until 12.23 am on his computer on April 2. The last time a user interacted with Anderson's computer was that night at 12.28 am.

Speaker 1:

The defense emphasized that Anderson did not search for anything specifically related to hiding, disposing or dismembering a body. The state calls their final witness around 2 pm and it's Dr Jordan Karsten, an anthropologist and professor at UW Oshkosh. He testified that many of Sade Robinson's bones had cut marks and most of them showed signs of some form of blunt force trauma, although none of the blood evidence in the house was linked to Sade. The real star of the prosecution was the many cameras around Milwaukee and Sade's phone Cameras caught Sade and Maxwell entering his house together. Honestly, it looked like they were walking in over that dug up yard outside where he was digging for his quote basement. They also captured her car leaving. Now the defense tried to point out there's no proof that it was Maxwell driving, but then he's seen on camera just outside the beach gate where her leg was discovered and his dark figure walking on the beach. Plus, he was seen setting the car on fire and then catching the bus. Really, I don't think the blood was needed.

Speaker 1:

Investigators tried to piece together how Sade and Maxwell met, never really understanding because the text didn't indicate how. But in his home they found a folder labeled online dating where he had the login passwords for multiple online dating sites, so this was the assumption that they had met online. A confidential informant told police they had been friends with Anderson for a few years and they'd been to his residence on the evening of March 5th Now, remember she was murdered in April, so this is a month before and he claims Anderson allegedly told him that he had met Robinson recently and he had had plans to kill her, intending, to quote, bring Robinson to his residence, pulling a handgun on her and bringing her down to the basement, adding that he had planned on shooting Robinson, dismembering her body in the room that they were in, and would be disposing Robinson's body throughout the city. The informant also said he observed three we don't know if it's he or she three saws in Anderson's basement and believed that these were the saws that Anderson was going to use. He claimed there was a, or they claimed it was a plastic tarp that covered a sanitation sink, ceiling floors and walls. This could explain the lack of blood evidence in the home. People speculate why this informant didn't tell anyone and you know it's probably customary for psychedelic Mad Max to talk out of his head quite often so he probably wasn't taking him seriously. We may never honestly know why he killed her, but the show he was watching the Dexter tarping the city they live in, and he kind of looked domerish with light color hair and skin. It maybe could be labeled copycat.

Speaker 1:

After all was said and done, on the ninth day of the jury, after the defense called no further witnesses and Anderson did not testify on his behalf, deliberations began. The nine women and three men took 20 minutes to find him guilty of all four charges. The one thing we are missing here today during this recording is the sentencing, which is set for August 15th this year. Let's all show unity and wear pink to support Sade's family and friends.

Speaker 1:

To this day, all of Sade's body parts have not been found, including her head, and this could also be the reason that the cause of death is not indicated. If the person that came forward, if what they say is true, he was going to use a gun, and if he shot her in the head, we wouldn't know that. If he strangled her, we wouldn't know that as well. So that really would have given the cause of death. Her mother is sad about that but she's a strong advocate for violence in the city against black women and strongly encourages women to keep tracking acts on their phone for their friends and families to see where they are and to help you know her a bit more. If you want to support on August the 15th, she will talk about how you can do so in this recording. I will leave you with her mother's words about her beloved daughter after the verdict was announced in the courthouse, surrounded by a strong supporting community dressed in a sea of pink.

Speaker 2:

I remember. Sade is forever. She will be forever remembered as an angel, a light worker who's touched so many souls, so many lives in the Milwaukee community. She is our hero. She is forever leaving an imprint. She walks in her own path, her own light. She solved her own case. My baby solved her own case. That's how I raised my kids. We don't give up. We are fighters. I demanded justice. I stand tall, I stand affirmative. Sade will continue to walk with me daily and right beside me. Shade will continue to walk with me daily and right beside me. Please continue to support us by walking in how you move every day, like live by your principles, live in your true spirit. That's how Shade is remembered from every job, from every stranger, from every person she touched. Her energy is just. It will be forever with us.

Speaker 2:

Please continue to support the foundation Sade's Voice Foundationcom, myself and Adriana and all of the Sade's Voice angels and lightworkers that have been standing beside me, the whole team. We will definitely be advocating for all of the other missing, murdered, all of the other individuals in the community. I appreciate everybody in the community that's been standing beside us and by us. I know that there's a lot of other crime victim families in the community that have been outreaching me, and I have to. You know I have to take it one step at a time. I have to get my babies justice first before I can be able to help, maneuver and support any other crime victim families. But that's definitely going to be our mission. That's how I'm going to carry on. Sade you know her voice definitely I'll be working with Representative Sheila Stubbs. Thank you so much for being here.

Speaker 2:

We're pushing for the Missing and Murder Task Force. It's mandatory. The state definitely needs it for our BIPOC women, for all women. And just allow us time to just kind of grieve. I haven't really had a day to grieve since April of last year. Me and Adriana have been nonstop all day, every day. My mom, my family, all of us. We don't give up. So that's what I can say about Shade. Go hard for your kids. If anybody has learned anything from this situation. Please talk to your kids, please communicate. Take the village, see something, say something, please communicate. Take the village, see something, say something and just we'll be working to do some many things.

Speaker 1:

Just continue to follow us and support us, and my mission is for crime victims thank you for listening and join me next time as we discover all that is hidden in true crime.
