Vivian brings a wealth of experience to the conversation, having spent decades uplifting African American history, culture, and community achievements across South Carolina and beyond. She currently serves as Commission Chair and Chair of the Public Relations Committee, and also sits on the boards of Preservation South Carolina and the South Carolina Civil Rights Museum Advisory Board.

During the episode, Vivian shares insights from her extraordinary career, including her work as a former NBC News producer, where she covered major breaking news and produced features for The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, and Dateline. She also reflects on her role in historical storytelling through PBS documentaries such as Shared History—which aired nationally and throughout Europe—and The Marines of Montford Point: America’s First Black Marines.

As an author, Vivian discusses her books Men of Vision: Claflin College and Her Presidents, A Tapestry of Their Times, and her novel The First Fig Tree, all of which explore identity, legacy, and the lived experiences of African Americans in the South. Her work consistently bridges academic research with personal narrative—something that aligns perfectly with the Buckle Up Podcast’s mission.

The conversation also highlights her recent leadership in helping establish 25 African American historical markers across South Carolina, ensuring that communities see their stories permanently honored and recognized. Vivian speaks passionately about the importance of witnessing, documenting, and celebrating history as it happens—while inviting communities to continue contributing to the narrative of who we are and where we come from.

This episode is a masterclass in legacy, truth-telling, and cultural preservation—and a reminder of why Buckle Up exists: to give people space to tell their stories, honor their roots, and pass knowledge forward to the next generation.

An episode filled with wisdom, history, and heart—don’t miss it.
