The passion behind automotive culture shines brightest when enthusiasts gather to share their stories. At the Tailpipes and Tacos Cruise-In at the Lupe' Tortilla Tex-Mex in Katy, we experienced this firsthand as we awarded our signature Chili Pepper trophies to three remarkable vehicles.

Mr. Hoggo's 1932 Ford Highboy stole the show with its masterfully crafted fiberglass body—so convincing that even SoCal Speed Shop experts needed nearly an hour to determine it wasn't metal. Powered by a beastly 640 horsepower 383 stroker engine, this yellow beauty combines old-school aesthetics with modern performance.

The most touching moment came when 17-year-old Madden Morgan received his very first trophy for his 1989 Chevy 1500. Built alongside his father, this daily-driven pickup represents exactly what car culture is about—passion passed between generations, creating bonds that last a lifetime. Seeing the pride on both father and son's faces reminded everyone why we gather at events like this.

We also gained fascinating insights into junior drag racing from Sheila Holt, who has witnessed the sport's evolution over 28 years. From small regional competitions to national events with hundreds of participants, junior racing has become a family activity that creates lifelong friendships and cherished memories beyond just the track experience.

Whether you're a dedicated gearhead or simply appreciate craftsmanship, there's something magical about hearing builders share their stories. Each vehicle represents countless hours of work, problem-solving, and personal expression—ultimately becoming not just transportation, but autobiography in metal and chrome.

Join us next week as we hit the road with the Hot Rod Tour of Texas! We'll be broadcasting live from Spindletap Brewery in Houston as hundreds of vehicles make their way across the Lone Star State. Follow us on social media for updates throughout this exciting three-day journey.

Mike out of this world there's lots of surprises here today. Mike out of this world. Mars we always need more. Jeff Zekin, chief Engineer David Ainsley I'm Don Armstrong. Glad you could join us. I've got some headlines to read. We're going to do the announcement.

Speaker 2

Yeah, they're pulling the cars up right now. They've got all that arranged, so we're going to give away the trophies.

Speaker 1

Yeah, so we have the Loopy Tortilla Chili Pepper trophies Chase. What are the names on those trophies?

Speaker 1

I can't remember, and I've got it written down somewhere in this big stack of papers and Jeff is going to is it classic or best hot rod? Best classic, best classic, best modern classic, best modern classic. Okay, so these are the three events, three trophies that we're going to give away, and Biff has been our designated trophy presenter, and so why don't we go ahead and do that? But we're going to need to have some names, and Biff was supposed to get some names of the people that are going to, and Biff was supposed to get some names of the people that were going to that are going to. Do you have the names of these people that own these cars? Well, why don't you sit down over there and put a headset on? Put that yellow headset on. Oh, chase, chase, chase Murray is going to do it. Okay, that's fine. So part of the Holt family, uh, which?

Speaker 4

seems to grow by the day. So, uh, and by the way, congratulations, dad. Yeah, thank you so much. Yeah, it's that, does that boy?

Speaker 1

ever stop smiling.

Speaker 4

No, no, never yeah, that's, one happy except when you know when I'm drinking fajitas from luby tortilla that's that.

Speaker 1

That's it, and I guess he's still gumming them. Oh yeah, you got any teeth yet? No, no, teeth, no it's real close.

Speaker 4

Close yeah, but he can drink queso, so that's good.

Speaker 1

Well, it's good to see you.

Speaker 4

You as well.

Speaker 1

Yeah, and so we're looking forward to getting the winner's names of the Chili Pepper trophies. Do you have?

Speaker 4

those names, I do, I do.

Speaker 1

Okay, so we're going to do Best Hot Rod first.

Speaker 4

All right. So for Best Hot Rod we have Mr Hoggo with the 32 Ford Highboy.

Speaker 1

Oh yes, that's the yellow one that's sitting right out here in front.

Speaker 4

What's his name? Mr Hoggo, mr.

Speaker 1

Hoggo.

Speaker 4

We don't know where, mr.

Speaker 1

Argo is, but at any rate it's a beautiful. Obviously a complete custom, but it's really hot.

Speaker 4

It's really nice. It's really really nice. He's done a lot of the work himself. He has his own shop here he comes.

Speaker 1

Is this you.

Speaker 4

Sir, there he is, mr Argo.

Speaker 1

Are you always late to the party? Your wife tells us that you are Well, go and sit down over there and tell us a little bit about your car, please. Right behind you, yeah, yeah, put that headset on and tell us a little bit about your 32 Highboy that you've got over there. It's a beautiful car. Did you build this yourself?

Speaker 3

Yes, I did all the work on it, except for the upholstery.

Speaker 1

Except for the upholstery.

Speaker 3

So did you chop it? No, it's a glass body.

Speaker 1

It's a glass body, it's a glass body.

Speaker 3

It's a Pete and Jake's frame. The body is made by Curry. They're probably one of the best by today's standards. Let me tell you something. It looks like a real one. I had it at the World of Wheels car show. I finished it in November. I took it to the car show right, I finished it in november and I took it to the car show that they had thanksgiving weekend. Yes, auto rabban and it took. I think there was 14 street rods in the class and it took third place to socal speed shops two nice coupes and then the jimmy shine.

Speaker 3

Yeah, the two guys from socal came over and they were looking at it. They said we had to look at this car for about 45 minutes before we could figure out it wasn't metal.

Speaker 1

Yeah, it's a fiberglass car.

Speaker 3

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So what kind of motors it got in it?

Speaker 3

It's got a 640 horsepower, 383 stroker in it. It's got a pretty strong 350 turbo with a 3800 stall converter, 411 rear end. So it cranks yeah, I'll bet it does. 350 turbo with a 3800 stall converter, 411 rear end so it cranks yeah, I'll bet it does. Yeah, a couple of velocity stacks. Yeah, yeah, I wanted to old school it. Yeah, show it off a little bit. Oh, I get it?

Speaker 1

Yeah, absolutely Not an issue at all. It's a beautiful car. Congratulations, and there's your trophy.

Speaker 3

Oh, wow, thanks, you get a chili pepper trophy from the Loopy Tortilla. Hot stuff. It is hot stuff. Yeah, it is.

Speaker 1

So that'll look good on the mantle.

Speaker 3

Heck, yeah, all right.

Speaker 1

Well, it's great to meet you and congratulations on your best hot rod today.

Speaker 3

We'll see you next time At Tailpipes and Tacos. Thanks guys, Be sure and bring it back out.

Trophy Presentations Begin

Speaker 1

I will. So Chase now has the next trophy, which is the Best Classic.

Speaker 4

All right, so for the Best Classic we have, mr Ainsley with the 66 GMC truck, mr Ainsley with the 66 GMC truck.

Speaker 1

Not you, Ainsley. That's Mrs Ainsley there.

Speaker 4

That's Mrs Ainsley. All right, here he comes.

Speaker 1

All right. So, mr Ainsley, what is it? A 66, what? A GMC C10. A GMC C10. Pickup truck? Yeah, sweet, did you customize it? Put the headset on. Put the headset on. Talk to us for just a second if you can Tell us about your 66. So obviously, a half-ton pickup truck.

Speaker 5

Yeah, half ton. Um, it's got an ls uh 5.3 uh full air ride suspension. It's essentially a modern vehicle underneath, just with old sheet metal yeah interiors redone uh. Leather everywhere, even the dash and uh did you do all the work yourself? No, it was bought, probably 90 done. I had to finish the bed off um the inner fenders and the interior so you, you've got some investment in it. Yeah oh yeah, sweat and equity it's for sale if anybody wants it yeah, what are you asking?

Speaker 5

for uh you know, I don't have to talk to the wife we're standing probably at Probably north of 115.

Speaker 4

I don't think Stan's allowed anymore. Okay, 115, 120.

Speaker 1

Stan's not allowed to buy any more cars. No, he's not.

Speaker 2

Just tell him your last name's Amikam and he'll buy it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 5

Sucker, or just tell him it's a small British truck. Okay, yeah.

Speaker 1

I think he's got a little more knowledge than that, hey thanks so much. Congratulations on winning today. Okay, and then the next one is the Best Modern Classic.

Speaker 4

All right. So for Best Modern Classic, I have Madden Morgan in a 1989 Chevy 1500.

Speaker 1

All right, that's another truck, another truck. Yeah Well, imagine that how about that. Yeah, so who's got the? Is that the Ferrari Testarossa over?

Speaker 2

there. No, that's not it, that's not it. No, but I'm saying it is.

Speaker 4

Yeah, it is one.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 4

Congratulations, man.

Speaker 1

Yeah, it's the best modern classic.

Speaker 4

It's an 89 Chevy with single cab fleet side.

Speaker 1

Now, did you buy this or did you make this? I did most of the work to it.

Speaker 3

You did yes, sir. How this? I did most of the work to it. You did yes, sir, how old are you? I'm 17, me and my dad did the work. Awesome, awesome. Congratulations, sir, thank you. Is that your first trophy? It is, is it?

Speaker 1

yes, sir, I love that well, uh, that that's very special, yeah, and especially the fact that you did it with your dad. Congratulations, because that's where most of us learn from yeah um too, that's actually a chick magnet. You're telling me one that, oh yeah. So what kind of?

Speaker 3

motors it got in it. It's got the original 350. It does Carbureted TBI.

Speaker 5

How many miles?

Speaker 3

140 on the body, around 9,000 on the engine and trans Ah.

Speaker 1

Wow.

Speaker 3

Very sweet. Do you drive it every day? Yes, sir, I drive it to school, you do. What school? I go to Episcopal High School.

Speaker 1

Very good, very nice. Well, congratulations, man. And what's your name? Again, matt and Morgan. Matt and Morgan. Well, it's a pleasure, and congratulations. Is your dad here?

Speaker 3

Yes, sir, he is Well you've got to share that with your dad.

Speaker 2

There's dad over there. Way to go, dad.

Speaker 1

You've done good, trophy husband.

Speaker 3

Speaker 4

Thank you guys for having this excellent broadcast and showing us so much love every time.

Speaker 1

We try, we do try.

Speaker 4

Yes.

Speaker 1

Sometimes we win, sometimes we don't. I like the hat.

Speaker 4

It's brand new Hot off the press. As of last night, hot off the press.

Speaker 1

Who does them? I was just going to say did you make those? No, why not? I'm with Bull Shirts If you play your cards right.

Speaker 4

You might have a couple of slits.

Speaker 1

You know he's with Bull Shirts now. Yeah, yeah, so he sells all this stuff, right, right.

Speaker 4

So I had these done by who does all of our Lupe stuff already, so it was an easy transition.

Speaker 1

Well, all right. Well, so how are things in the world of dad?

Speaker 4

Things couldn't be any better. Of dad. Things couldn't be any better.

Speaker 1

That's good.

Speaker 4

It's really a true blessing, every single day.

Speaker 1

And so did I see that the wife is racing now.

Speaker 4

Oh yeah, Wife and a new dragster.

Speaker 1

Well, yeah, we talked about that.

Speaker 4

You were building it.

Speaker 1

last time it came out Right, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4

So wife has a new dragster and she's loving it. She said she had to miss out last year for the pregnancy and now she's no excuses. She's coming for everybody's head this year, nailing the throttle to the floor.

Speaker 1

That's right. Yeah, yeah, and how are you doing?

Speaker 4

I'm doing great. And how's the car? The car not so much, but I'm doing great yeah. Well so what are we going to do to fix the car? We are going to put together a new chassis over the rest of the year and get it ready, so you're going to pin up the chassis.

Speaker 1

Yeah, yeah, okay.

Speaker 4

So we're going to regroup and get another ride ready for next year.

Speaker 1

Okay. So you're just going to lay off this year. Right, you're going to focus on Mama's car, I'm going to play dad and crew chief. On Mama's car. That's good.

Speaker 4

Yeah, so that's good.

Speaker 1

Very nice.

Speaker 4

That's a good time to focus on that.

Speaker 1

Well, good, well, it's great to see you.

Speaker 4

You as well.

Speaker 1

Yeah, and we need to get together. We need to have us a little barbecue or something.

Speaker 4

I'm down for it, you know.

Speaker 1

Mexican food is great and, don't get me wrong, I eat it many times every week, but every once in a while a little change doesn't hurt.

Speaker 4

Yes, sir, you know about that.

Speaker 1

I do. Are you still living out in Katy?

Speaker 4

I sure am Good Eating Mexican food every single day. Yes, you are.

Speaker 5

Right here at the Loopy Tortilla.

Speaker 1

Tech's Mexican Katy, he knows change, because he's changing diapers. Yeah Well, there's that. Yeah Well, it's great to see you and congratulations on another successful event. You know, the first cars rolled in here this morning at 7 o'clock we're still setting up.

Speaker 4

No, there was one or two. Came in about 6.30. That's the way they like to do it get a roll in early. Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 1

And you know, it seems to me that they left the house about 8, and they get here about 8.30 to 9, and then the parking lot is jam-packed. Yeah, still not a lot of nice cars left here this morning.

Speaker 4

Still, what a couple hundred cars. Yeah, last time we had a show, I put my drone up and I individually counted everything.

Speaker 2

We were just over 150, so I think it was a great turnout.

Speaker 3

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Well thanks to all of you guys, yeah.

Speaker 1

Thankfully being overcast, but thanks to all of you for always promoting and putting this on. Well, not only that, but I made it a point to tell Mars. I said there's no rain in the forecast. I have looked at every weather forecast there is, and so there's no reason for not a full house here today. Yes, sir, Because actually in my show car world, this is ideal. Oh, absolutely, it's not ideal for taking pictures, because everything is all the same, but boy, it sure is nice for us human beings to walk around in Very true, yeah.

Speaker 1

And you got the Easter Bunny here.

Speaker 4

That's it right. Everybody loves the Easter Bunny.

Her name is Sheila Holt and her fan club and her fan club and she brought her fans. I brought my fans.

Speaker 1

Yes, your fans. Are you familiar with Leanne Morgan?

Speaker 2

Like the country singer.

Speaker 3

No, the comedian, Comedian.

Speaker 2

Oh, yes, yes, she has a wonderful country, twang.

Speaker 1

You know what?

Speaker 2

I like her.

Speaker 1

Every time I see her, I think of you.

Speaker 2

Oh, because of my country, twang.

Sheila Holt on Junior Drag Racing

Speaker 1

Yeah, yeah, and a sense of humor.

Speaker 2

Oh yeah.

Speaker 1

Yeah, there's that, Well look who I live with.

Speaker 5

Kind of got of humor.

Speaker 2

Oh yeah, yeah, there's that. Well, look who I live with.

Speaker 1

Kind of gotta have one, I mean well, I wanted to bring you in here and talk to you just a moment about your career in drag racing, and it started with I have a career yeah, yeah, yeah, you do that's the humor right there, that ain't that. No, no, seriously because, uh, I met you. I think it was just after the Junior Drag Racing series, was it not just after that?

Speaker 2

Yeah, so that was in Pomona like 2006, 2007.

Speaker 1

Seven yeah.

Speaker 2

Yeah, so I got started with Junior drag racing when Chase was eight, so Chase is now 36. So what 28 years ago?

Speaker 1

when he was eight years old. So you headed up the southeast region, didn't you?

Speaker 2

Actually just the Houston Raceway Park.

Speaker 1

Houston Raceway.

Speaker 2

I was like track mom and I just helped the crew out there and kept up with all the ladders and all the kids and made sure they were in the correct lane.

Speaker 1

How many kids were in the junior drag racing program at the time when you were in it?

Speaker 2

On a good day. 40 to 50.

Speaker 1

Really yeah, wow, it was huge, yeah, and I guess it still is. It's probably bigger.

Speaker 2

It is bigger was huge, yeah, and I guess it still is. It's probably bigger. It's, it's it is bigger. Um. I'll tell you this um, in 1999, chase went to the junior dragster nationals. That's when they just had one um, that was an indie, and there was 900 cars whoa. After that. Um, that's when they decided they need an eastern conference final and a western conference final. And so that's what they decided they need an Eastern Conference Final and a Western Conference Final. And so that's what they started doing. And I want to say it's coming up in like a couple weeks in June, when the kids are obviously on summer break. And I want to say Bristol is one of the tracks, and maybe Dallas. They stopped doing it in Indy.

Speaker 1

Because there's just too much going on.

Speaker 2

Yeah, it's a lot, but it really helped out in 2000 when they split the kids, because each track back in the day when we were running it, each track could bring 30 kids. So it was a team of 10. So we'd take three teams and it was ages 8 all the way to 18. 18? Yeah, it was 18, right. 16, 18? Yeah. You could race up until 18.

Speaker 1

Wow. Yeah, and you could get a big 18-year-old boy in that little bitty car.

Speaker 2

Now of course they just race against their age group yeah. So, like an 8-year-old wouldn't race against an 18-year-old. And now, um, you can even start your kids as young as five years old. It was eight back then, but now it's five years old you know it's so funny.

Speaker 1

Where's your grandson?

Speaker 2

your grandson is here, yeah yeah, we need to get him signed that's not gonna happen yeah, but we're already working on my grandson I'm sure, yeah, I'm sure. And the college education and all that, yeah, yeah actually I saw um john harden, um harden's race cars. He built some of the first junior dragsters. He actually built, uh, erica and courtney enders dragsters that were in the movie right on track and they're one of the. They're the dragsters that are in the museum in pomona.

Speaker 2

It's john harden harden's race cars. So I saw him the other day and I told him I said you got one more in you because he's kind of retired yeah so I'm like you got one more in you because I my grandson's gonna have to have a harden's race car yeah and he said sheila may, yes, absolutely absolutely I got you.

Speaker 1

Yeah, I mean, you know well, you know, all I can relate it to is, you know, with amy especially doing the volleyball thing yeah and that's kind of what it is with a motor, because the parents are all involved, the brothers, the sisters, the whole family goes. Yeah, you cheer on your team, your car, your driver and uh, it's a, it's a racing event, a, yeah, and it's tons of fun.

Speaker 2

Oh, my God, it's so fun, like when we used to go. My mom and dad, who my mom's here, my mom and dad would travel with us, and even my grandmother, who was like in her 80s years ago. She went all the way to Denver, colorado, with us when we went to the Junior Dragster Nationals and in between, like the days when you're not running.

Speaker 2

You'd go up to like red rock and just like so many memories from drag racing and when we were in indie we'd go down to the stream and take pictures. I mean, it's just. You think all it is is racing, but it's. It's more than that, because you get to go off with your family and friends and these kids create lifelong friendships. You know from drag racing and I will say this um, you know, a lot of people heard about chase's um incident that he had and they go oh my gosh, he's got to stop racing. And I was like, well, let me just tell you this if you were in your regular car going 150 miles an hour, you probably would not have walked away. And I'm an advocate for drag racing. We wear all our safety equipment and I feel at that speed he is safer in his dragster than he is in his Corvette in his daily driver in his truck.

Speaker 2

You know, because you've got a roll cage, you have a five-point safety harness, you have a Hans device on it. It keeps your neck from breaking completely off.

Speaker 3

Helmet.

Speaker 2

Yeah, helmet fire-retardant, suits, neck, I mean just everything. So I hate sometimes when people say that I understand if you're not familiar with drag racing and you don't know. Yes, that sounds scary, but really it's not. And my point is this when Chase was eight years old, he was playing with a friend and his friend fell on him and broke his clavicle. I'm like it wouldn't have happened if he was in his dragster. You know what I mean.

Speaker 1

That's one way of looking at it. Yeah, absolutely. Well, look at the friends that we all made. Yeah, because I met him at the drag race in Las Vegas.

Speaker 3

Let me think I don't remember it very well, but How's your clavicle Stan? A different drag race. How's your clavicle buddy? Yeah?

Speaker 1

There's a picture somewhere on the internet with he and I and Greg Enders with the great big glass, whatever.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Yeah, and then I think that he met you at Drag Strip, yeah, yeah, and so we all have this big family all through cars and racing and showing, and it's been a lifetime a wonderful career for me really.

Speaker 2

Yeah, it sure has yeah it has.

Speaker 1

It's great to have you here and good to see you.

Speaker 2

Thank you. I only get to see you twice a year now.

Speaker 1

I was talking about Stan's shrinking car collection.

The Safety and Value of Racing

Speaker 2

Yeah, I'm sorry, can we get her a water? Get her something heavier than water, I'll put it like this If anybody has some extra parking spaces, that's what he's looking for.

Speaker 1

Really Huh, so you can buy more cars.

Speaker 3

You just need to park them somewhere.

Speaker 2

No, we just.

Speaker 3

Logical to me.

Speaker 2

We're out of parking spaces as we speak.

Speaker 3

You know they make these lift things so you can kind of double stack. Oh, we have those.

Speaker 2

Uh-huh yes.

Speaker 3

We have those doubled up. They're double stacked, yeah, sorry. Sorry, I made a mistake oh just a little note.

Speaker 2
