The cables were messy, the mics were hot, and the parking lot was already full when we sat down with Dano—Navy and Marine veteran, Region 5 Toys for Tots coordinator, and proud VW bus owner. What followed was a lively ride through car culture, community, and the nuts-and-bolts work that turns one toy into a holiday morning breakthrough.

Dano rolls up in a 1974 Brazilian VW bus, a perfect entry point into a world where affordable classics still exist and weekend campouts feel like time travel. We dig into the differences between Brazilian and German buses, why a turnkey 30–50K bus beats a “rust bucket” restoration for most people, and how a modest 42 horsepower can carry a family farther than a spec sheet suggests. From curtains and pop-top campers to a prize-winning garage queen, Dano’s stories capture why these quirky machines keep gathering people around them. He even shares how a Houston VW club grew from seven members to nearly 800 by staying welcoming and driving often.

Then we switch gears to the mission: 28 years of Toys for Tots service, year-round. Dano breaks down the real logistics—unwrapped toys go to a Tomball warehouse, every item is counted, sorted by age and need, then bagged for registered nonprofits and families. Teens and kids with special needs are included, as are practical items like clothing and socks. A donated 27-foot truck was filled three times in a day because the need is that big. It’s not a seasonal gesture; it’s a supply chain for joy.

We also run through the week’s best cruise-ins, from Cypress to Clear Lake, and share frank thoughts on EV charging: adapters, access headaches, and why reliability matters. Whether you speak in volts or carburetors, the goal is the same—keep people moving and make the journey feel good.

If you love car stories with heart, this one’s for you. Subscribe, share with a friend who needs a smile, and leave a review to help more folks find the show. And if you can, bring an unwrapped toy to your local drive—let’s make more mornings feel like magic.

You know, and uh here's the way that the that the morning is gone. It took us two hours to set up this morning, which is ridiculous. And here's a wire that has a hole in the end of it.

SPEAKER_02

Something go in there? I don't know. Here, touch it to your tongue. See you have the nine-volt batteries. Here, see you this is here and hold this paper clip. You know, this was a car show, it's not anymore. Now we're science. We are we're gonna be a science show.

SPEAKER_03

SPEAKER_01

Science. Science. I could actually do that, but I can also do he can dance too. I can dance. He can dance. Biff can dance, and bit Biff is our uh what are you doing here today? Are you in charge of something? He is in charge. He's sweeping, sweeping, sweeping, clowning, whatever the case may be. He is the trophy uh guru. Thomas Dolby, it's science. She blinded me with science. Thomas Dolby. He doesn't even know who we're talking about. But you know who are you? How old are you? How old are you? 15? Do you know you know about that song? She blinded me by science. See now, there's homework for the weekend. He your dad's gonna put it up on a computer for you, and he's gonna go listen to this. She blinded me by science. Okay, just saying.

SPEAKER_02

I want to add to that. There it when you bring in a toy, you get uh breakfast taco. Yeah, you two breakfast tacos in a soda if you bring in a toy. Okay, so that's a that's a good bargain there. Well that's good.

SPEAKER_01

Unwrap toy, and that guy right there, he's supposed to be sitting over here at the end. Yeah, and I told him, Yeah, would you would you please tell him that his time is up and he needs to get his butt over here? Come on. He's over there talking to everybody.

Meet Dano From Toys For Tots

SPEAKER_02

I know, you know, as he thinks he is. I know exactly. Go ahead and put that on. So, yeah, keep the mic close to your you've done this before.

SPEAKER_01

This is the uh Toys for Tots guy, but we're gonna talk about that in a minute. But first of all, what is your name? My name is Dano.

SPEAKER_00

Dano, Dano, all right, Dano, book him, book him, book him, Dan.

SPEAKER_02

I didn't want to go there.

SPEAKER_00

I'm Dano. Dono, okay. How is McGarrett? Dano Duck, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, how's the island? How's McGarrett? Good, good, good, good, good.

SPEAKER_00

Make a lot of rest this year. So, Dano, what is your last name? It's Olortigi.

SPEAKER_01

Never mind. You didn't know that? Exactly. No, I didn't know that. Everybody knows that. This is the first time we've met. Have you been to have you been to stand shows before? Absolutely.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we I met you last year, but uh we didn't really talk about that. I was here.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you know what? I because I've had too many of these, that's probably why I don't remember.

SPEAKER_00

Today's not enough. I hear you.

SPEAKER_02

Last time, not enough today. Olategui?

SPEAKER_00

Olortegi. You got ortege. There you go. Ortege?

SPEAKER_01

Coordinator Region 5 Toys for Tots, Marine Corps Reserve. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

We're just gonna call you uh Dano Jones. Yeah, Dano Jones. That's good enough.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. Well, uh, hey man, thanks for what you do. Thank you. So you obviously you don't you you volunteer for Toys for Tots.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_01

Were you a Marine?

SPEAKER_00

Navy and Marines. There you go. When the game's today, are they one?

SPEAKER_01

Aren't they one and the same?

Dano’s VW Bus Collection

SPEAKER_00

Well, because don't even go there. Okay. The Army Navy game is today. Thank you. Yes, yeah, and that's the only time the Marines will say and be honored to be part of the Navy. But they are department of the Navy, right? But they don't like it. They say, Well, we're the men's department, whatever.

SPEAKER_01

That's good. So, Dano, I want to know about your car. And I I was told that you got a collection. I do.

SPEAKER_00

I had five at once. Okay, but I got buses. Buses, and you know what a single cab is? A single cabin. Yes, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Thank you. Yep. The truck came to the front with the truck. I gave it to my son. My son used it for a little bit, then he joined the Navy, just like me, this year. So he got a couple of years. No, he's in Washington, D.C. right now for a two-year contract with the ceremonial guard. So sorry. Ceremonial guard. Yes. That's elusive, yeah. Yeah. You have to be hand-picked. Dang. He was the only one out of his unit. One of the requirements is you got to be six foot tall. I'm 5'11. He's 6'2 at 18. So they picked him out and he's serving two years out there.

SPEAKER_02

Congratulations.

SPEAKER_00

You got to be proud. Oh, very. We see him. Uh he's coming home the 19th. Very nice. I like it. All right. So let's talk about your business. All right. This is one of them. One of them. Okay. And so why did you bring this one?

SPEAKER_01

What year is this?

SPEAKER_00

This one's a 74. It's a Brazilian. It's a Brazilian. The only difference. You know, I've heard about Brazilians, but I didn't I didn't know that they form for collector. They kind of frowned on them. Everybody likes the German ones. Those are worth more. That's why. Did they did they yeah, but the Brazilians are more fun? Yes, they are. They're affordable. They're affordable.

SPEAKER_01

Now, do they do they transform over the years and keep up with the times or how does that work?

SPEAKER_00

They do. They do. Um, if everybody knows in Germany they stopped production and they were continuing them in Mexico and Brazil. They kept doing it. So the 74 looks like a 64 because they kept making them. And there's a shot right now on the screen if you watch. So and this one's a 74, my other one's a 64. That's a true German. That's the one I drive on weekends. So is it when was the first year that they made those? I want to say 438. Really? And a lot of people don't like to say it, but it was Hitler. Yeah. That basically started it. One of the people's car. That's what Volkswagen started. No, Volkswagen, yeah. People's.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, I we if we ever want to thank him for anything, at least he started that. Him and Ferdinand Porsche. Yes. Yeah, yes. Of course. Yes. Yep. And um, you know, I'm I'm of of that era. And I truly appreciate back in the day, dude. It's like, are you kidding me? I know. That's a mob bus. Nobody nobody drives that. You could nerds. You could put a Brazilian people. The smoking jacket smoking sweaters. It's like we're trying to do Brazilian toys today. Yeah. Yeah. We'll get it. Well, that is that is very cool. And you know what? You know what? To me, what really sets it off? Don't laugh. The curtains.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. That's why I put them on my other one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. For photographers love that scene. So I'm not, I'm not, but besides, I'm not out of the ordinary. Because I don't know. Could you could you get them with that from uh the dealership? Do you know? I don't even know where it was. But it's an op. Yeah, it was probably an option. Yeah. Well, in that year, didn't they also make the the pop-up tent thing? The campers. What seniors?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Yes, sir. And that's where the curtains came in because you could sleep in it. Because there was a kitchen too. Exactly. You don't want the sunlight coming in, so they draw the curtain, right? And they you did the camp out and they slept on them. Yeah. People made road trips.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And uh see that so I remember that. Okay. And um, it was still the same nerd group, but they the only difference is instead of going to the racetrack or car clubs, they would go camping. Exactly. And listen, there's something to be said for that.

SPEAKER_00

And I I love it, I think it's great. That's why they have a lot of the Volkswagen shows are camp outs. They have a three-day show. Seriously, camp out. Have you been to one? Yeah, oh yeah. Have you? Originally from California, so I've been I oh my god, yeah. Aren't you glad you're not there anymore? Yes, I am. Thank God. Yeah, yes, no, I moved my family out here five years ago, and it's the best thing we've ever done. Yeah, well, welcome. You got to meet us, yeah. Yeah, there you go. And you're on a worldwide broadcast.

SPEAKER_01

Did you know that? Yes, I heard five million people. I know we're even broadcasting Brazil, yes, yeah, and we're and we get all shaved up for that. Just saying, what I actually I actually got the razor out this morning, and I normally don't do it. Shut up. Anyway, he got you he brought his epilady out as well. Look out, ladies. That's it. Okay, so what does it do? The buses have a different engine, a little bit more cubic inches than the regular cars.

SPEAKER_00

The original one was a 1500 cc, which pushes about 34 horsepower. There's a 1600 in here, so you're looking at maybe 42 horsepower.

Brazilian Vs German VW Buses

SPEAKER_01

Did that come stock with it? Or is it yes? It does. It did. So they bumped it up a little bit. A little bit. Why did they do that? Why did they spend all that time and energy doing that?

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. Interstate driving. That's why instead of stopping both the freeway fires on there, and you didn't even think of that. Yeah, yeah, but that makes sense. Yeah. Um, okay, so have you done any work to it? On this one, no. This one was a turnkey, and basically it's uh going back to California because it sold already. This one's sold, but my other one, I keep a garage, it's a Caribbean Queen. I just did uh Autorama down at the George R. Brown got first place. Really? Yes, sir.

SPEAKER_01

It's a Caribbean queen, Mars. Yeah, you know about that. Mars is the Caribbean Queen from Brazil. From Brazil.

SPEAKER_00

All right, so how long have you had this one? This particular one I've had for a year and a half. My other one I've had for eight years. Are they really expensive now? Nowadays, if you find them in that pristine, yes. That's that is that all original? This is all original, and the thing is, if you bought it basically what they call a rust bucket, if you pick up a rust bucket anywhere from 10 to 20 grand on a Brazilian.

SPEAKER_01

But but dude, but then you've got to uh spend all of that time exercise. Exactly.

SPEAKER_00

That's why you want to buy a turnkey one. But yeah, I mean, I put all the work in my other one. Was that was that this one's a bunch of did you buy this from in California? No, this one was uh shipped from Brazil. What did you go down there and see it? A partner of mine, California. That's what he does. He imports them, sells them in California. We bought we bring them to Califor or Texas to get the titles on them and see if they you know people like them or not. So I what do you mean whether they like them or not? Really? A lot of people. Well, they again when you picture a bus, you're picturing money. Brazilians are your alternative, so it's affordable. So I you can buy this for anywhere from 30 to 50, but a German would be 50 to 200 grand. Really?

SPEAKER_02

And that's again now.

SPEAKER_00

Is that your business? Do you do that? I'm I'm retired, so it's my friend. I just help them out from the military. 22 years of military and 10 years as a nurse.

SPEAKER_02

Very good.

SPEAKER_00

Are you are you an RN? I was an LVN.

SPEAKER_02

LVN LVN, yes, yes. Now we talked we talked about car collections, and that's that's perfect to start a car collection. Yeah, you've got five.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and and and so we just did a feature on starting a car collection, right? And we talked about you know originals, we talked about modified and then all that customized. Uh I uh uh we we know people that have owned collections and major ones. Stan has a huge car collection, you probably know about that, and um, but his is all over the place, and you you've gotta you've gotta appreciate that.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I like that one. I'm gonna buy that one. Okay, this is not that one, but I like that one too, and I'm gonna buy that one, right? And as time goes on, one leads to another, leads to another, leads to another. That part of it doesn't change.

SPEAKER_00

Neither does the part where you need a wife. You have all these girls with you now. They're your girlfriends. Yeah, you have a wife. She says this is my second wife. This one here. Yes, yeah. So, where do you store the other ones? In my garage. So, you got a like a five-car garage? Three-car. Three car, yeah. And that was nice, yeah. Our personal cars stay out, we can keep these in the garage.

SPEAKER_01

Good, good for you. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I I totally get that. Yeah, yeah. The funny thing is, uh, when I moved out here, I wanted to bring basically not the California but the West Coast five or Volkswagen. Sure. We started out with seven of us in the club. I started a club, yeah. Funkin' Grooving, Vintage Volkswagen Club, yeah, here in Houston. We started out with seven members today. We have 799. Wow, shut up! Nope. And we just got a new number 800 is out here right now. Yeah, I saw that. He just joined us today. I love it. So it's okay.

Camper Culture, Curtains, And Campouts

SPEAKER_01

So let's take a couple of seconds to talk about Toys for Tots today. Absolutely. So, this is a big drop-off zone, and uh bring an unwrapped toy, drop it in the box. There's a man right there that's got some tickets. He's gonna give you a ticket, you get two tacos and a soda for free. Absolutely. So it's it's well worth it. And you know, I told my daughter, I said, come, because it's every kind of car. You got I have a three-year-old grandson. Okay, he is all into anything that with wheels on it, and uh and I told him, I said, he will love this. And we've got we've got the kitty cars, we got cars that he has little bitty cars of your bus. Okay, kid cars, you know what I'm saying? And so uh this is the time right now to come out, enjoy the cars, bring the grandkids, bring the kids, whatever it is, see all the real life cars, and then see the car collection, the the the the pedal car collection. Yeah, so let's talk talk about Toys for Tots. How long have you been with Toys for Tots? 28 years. Really? Really longer with Toys for Tots than you were in the service. That is correct. Yeah, yeah. And and you know, everybody relates this to a once-a-year event, but it it is, but it's not, it's a full-time job for me.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm a volunteer, I don't get paid to do this, and it's year-round, year round, and you're doing it because you enjoy it. Because I love seeing the kids' faces on Christmas getting that one toy that they would never get given.

SPEAKER_02

Some kids don't get any toys, you know, it's not just the little ones, there's teens, there's pre-teens that also. People don't think about them. People don't think about the teens or the special needs kids, exactly. You know, you even uh uh uh apparel yes shirts and foundations and socks and things. That's you guys do all of that.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. My wife and I just finished up. Uh Ryder donated a 27-foot truck box truck to us. We did all these pickups all over our area. We filled up the truck three times yesterday. Wow, wow, dropped it off, and then we had a toy district. So I donate a toy, right? It leaves here. Where does it go? It goes to our warehouse. Where's the warehouse in Tumball? We collect it. The nonprofits already registered families that they eligible and make sure that they're eligible, that they have kids, what have you so they apply to Toys Retots to become eligible? We start October 1st, and then we go to our people we have as capacity. We had to close it November 30th. We had so many kids come up and you know, just their families were asking for them. Oh my god, warms my heart. We cleaned them out, they cleaned out our warehouse last night. So this right here is a bonus. A new start. We're still going, we're still going in the process. And you got time.

SPEAKER_02

There's so many kids out there, but not just here. And as this ends, it's not the end of everything. No, there's still opportunity for folks to donate to us uh through your organization and through others, I'm sure. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

So there's over 843 coordinators in the United States.

SPEAKER_01

Contribute, contribute. That that that that that warms my heart. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so after today, what are you gonna do? Well, I'm taking this home, my wife's counting them, and then we put it take it to the warehouse. So, is that what you do? You count the toys. We have to count each one of them, and then my volunteers take the toys and separate them by age male, female, aged unisex, and then by ages. Yeah, then we set the tables up and then we bag them for the nonprofit and for the individual families that registered said, Hey, I have a son, he's five years old, he likes Hot Wheels. Boom, that's what we do. Put Hot Wheels and put some, we try to uh accommodate every kid. Exactly, exactly.

SPEAKER_01

That's so awesome. Well, you're an awesome guy, Dano. Thank you. Dano it's uh yeah, it's a pleasure to meet you. Real honor to actually get out there and book. Thank you for your thank you for your service. Thank you. Thank you, thank you. We we appreciate you absolutely thank you. All right, we're gonna take a quick break here at the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show and Tailpipes and Tacos. I know. Well, you just come on, buddy. Mars, you just need to calm down. This guy here, which is give he gets it from me. Get him some tequila. Do it, get give him something. He needs something. Uh you know what he needs a Brazilian, a Brazilian, and you you have a Brazil Brazilian. You got a Brazilian right there. Mars? There, there's your there's your opportunity right there. The yellow bus. That's that's the Brazilian.

SPEAKER_03

Toys For Tots Drive Details

SPEAKER_01

You can't you can't just leave me with what it's all yours. No, it's not all mine. I'm not gonna take blame for I've I've taken blame for everything this past month, and I'm not gonna take it. Don't do it. But in the meantime, and in between time, I'm proud to report this story. Dateline, Durham, North Carolina. Demand for electric vehicles has slowed dramatically. Duh. Yep. Federal tax incentives have been canceled. Grandiose EV ambitions are being postponed or scaled back. It's in this moment that eight of the world's largest car makers are hitting the accelerator on their joint effort to build a nationwide network of convenient, reliable EV chargers rivaling Teslas. That's what I want to put my money into. More unusable charging stations.

SPEAKER_02

Yep, there you go. You know, they're building uh a big launch pad, I guess, of EV chargers over at the airport, Sugar Land Airport.

SPEAKER_01

Iona, the startup those companies formed, is shooting for 30,000 charging bays across North America by the end of 2030. Its stations, branded as Rechargery, will give EV drivers easy access to grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants, and other amenities, along with the confidence that they won't get stranded on a road trip with a dead battery.

unknown

Why not?

SPEAKER_01

Iona and its founding automakers, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Delantis, and Toyota, all of which invested an equal, undisclosed amount of money, say they want to build the nation's best charging network, even if not necessarily the largest, at some point to Tesla's superchargers as the standard to meet or exceed. I have a story about that. True experience. So I received a car to drive, and it was an all-electric and it didn't have the usual plug that I could plug into the house to charge the car, however how slow that is, but it gives me something. Now we're not gonna supply you with that, but we're gonna we're gonna supply you because the car has now this particular Kia has a Tesla plug. Okay, so there's a difference between the NAX plug and the Tesla plug. So they got a adapter, turnaround, whatever you want to call it, an adapter. Go try to find a Tesla charger that isn't full of Teslas or broken, or the Tesla chargers at the Tesla store down the street from me. Oh yeah, guess what? Show me about that. Unusable. Unusable, because you have to have authorization to use the 15 chargers that they've got there. Incredible. There you go with that. Tri-color. Remember that story? Oh yeah. It's just ended.
