A live road trip check-in should be simple, but when you’re a live car talk show, it turns into a full-speed sprint through the biggest stories of the week. We start with some real-time studio chaos, then dig into why Ford F-150 inventory is suddenly so tight and what a supply shock like an aluminum plant fire can do to prices, selection, and dealer lots across the country.

Next, we get into the uncomfortable stuff: the FTC asking dealers to report other dealers who break federal vehicle advertising rules. We talk through what “self-policing” could fix, what it could break, and why shoppers should be extra careful with too-good-to-be-true price ads. From there, we vent about CEO compensation, react to Mary Barra’s reported pay package, and connect it to GM’s decision to delay its next-generation full-size electric truck program while the market leans harder into hybrids and proven gas platforms.

Then we lighten it up with car culture fun: a quick hit on WeatherTech money moves, a surprisingly heated floor mat debate, and a game of matching famous car slogans to the right automaker. We also run through a practical recall roundup including Goodyear performance tires, Lexus fuel pump issues, Ford F-150 downshift concerns, and more. We wrap with our Hot Rod Tour Of Texas update from the highway, with the crew rolling from New Braunfels toward Fredericksburg and all the small-town charm in between.

Show Open And Schedule Slip

Don Armstrong

Welcome to the award-winning In Wheel Time Car Talk Show just ahead, part two of our interview with Sabra Sparkman on the hot rod tour of Texas, where they are right now and how things are going, and what's just ahead. In Jeff's Car Culture, Drivers Homes. No, we already did it. We did that. I did it out of the way. We did that last time.

Jeff Dziekan

I know. My fault. We could do it again. Well, what are we going to do when it's due motor minute? Motor minute's going to be we just flipped them.

unknown

Okay.

Jeff Dziekan

I know. I I know. What happened? I did it. You did it. I did it. You guys are first mistake this year, so okay.

Don Armstrong

Uh, Mr. Mars, are you gonna do day trip or destinations, or are you going to flip the lid on us on this one too?

Mike Marrs

No, no, no. I'm I'm with you. I'm I'm following the schedule. I'm just trying to keep up with the pictures, though.

Don Armstrong

Oh, we got a schedule. Okay. Howdy, along with Mike out of this world, Mars. We always need more Jeff Zeke, Chief Engineer David Ainsley. I'm Don Armstrong. Thanks so much for joining us today. Do we have uh Sabra with us?

Mike Marrs

No, she hasn't got back with us yet. I'm watching for her, though.

Don Armstrong

All right. Well, uh, you know, I had a bunch of uh car stories that I'm not gonna be able to get, uh news stories that I'm not gonna be able to get to. So in the meantime and in between time, while we wait for her to rejoin us, if she does, she's probably had enough already and said.

Mike Marrs

She's probably down at the bottom of the hill having trouble getting the signal.

Don Armstrong

Truck month wasn't the same this year at Chuck Anderson Ford. Ford's annual March pickup promotion typically jump starts the spring selling season with deals on the F-150, a massive moneymaker for the company and its retailers. But this year, Ford and its dealers are still reeling from a fire seven months ago that disrupted production at a New York plant that supplies aluminum for the bodies of Ford's pickups and SUVs. Another fire at the same plant in November set back recovery efforts and prolonged the pain. Chuck Anderson Ford, less than 20 miles from Ford's F-150 Kansas City, Missouri plant, usually starts truck month with about 70 pickups. This year they had only nine. It's a heap of a mess, Nick Anderson at the dealership's manager told Newsweek. Outside of COVID, I've never seen an F-150 shortage like this. Dealers around the U.S. grappling with an undersupply of a vehicle. That's a reliable profit pillar, and the leader in an intensely competitive segment. The automaker is scrambling to boost production, but has signaled that inventory levels may not stabilize until the second half of the year. Data firm Catalyst IQ, which powers the automotive news vehicle price and inventory tracker, said F-150 stocks have fallen 43% since the initial September 16th fire at the Novellus aluminum plant, all but wiping out a commanding supply lead over its rivals. So if you're looking for an F-150, well, good luck.

FTC Wants Dealers To Report Ads

unknown

Wow.

Don Armstrong

Um dealers are being asked to report competitors who violate Federal Trade Commission vehicle advertising rules to help the agency catch industry bad apples, according to an FTC official. I'll tell you what, I'm sure I'm glad I'm not in that circle. Snitches get stitches. Yeah. Christopher Muffarage, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, said at a webinar that the agency wants help honest dealers compete and on an even playing field. His response came near the end of a 50-minute webinar that covered a variety of dealer concerns. Mufferidge was asked what dealers should do if they're following the FTC rules, but a competitor down the street is not. The FTC's call for the industry self-policing follows warning letters that the agency sent to 97 dealership groups in March about potential price advertising violations. So if you get drawn in to some dealer because of an ad, make sure that the ad is being honest with you and it's not some, you know, lead to bring you into the dealer later.

Mike Marrs

But they didn't really have a hotline though, did they, to call? What about this?

Jeff Dziekan

What about secret shoppers? You and I work for the same dealer, and I'm going to send you around the city to go check on these ads, and you're going to be building a case against them. So a secret shopper can do the same thing.

Mike Marrs

Or even better, somebody down the street or across town is outselling me this month, and I'm going to send in some calls and say how they're cheating and stuff to get them investigated, even if it's not real.

Don Armstrong

See, Mr. Mars, that's why you're over there. So the people don't come and beat us up over here together.

Jeff Dziekan

His address is info at infiltime.com. Exactly. Good lord.

Don Armstrong

Yeah. That I know. I say, well, we we could call our uh Houston Automobile Dealers Association, but they're gonna go, you know what? Uh we'll let that play out before we make any comments. Your government's doing that now.

CEO Pay And GM EV Pivot

Jeff Dziekan

Yeah, exactly. It's happening now.

Don Armstrong

Okay, you really ready to get ticked off on a Saturday morning?

Jeff Dziekan

We did that at like a quarter to ten this morning.

Don Armstrong

Would you like to be ticked off on a Saturday morning about this story that I'm about to read? Sure, go ahead. Because it really ticks me off. It ticked me off so much that I wanted to make sure that you guys knew about this. We're gonna be miserable together. Mary Berra earned$29.9 million just last year, again, making her the highest paid Detroit three CEO. So when you go out and you buy your General Motors vehicle, whatever it is, think of that. How many millions you're putting into her pocket? Yeah, she's Cam increased Berra's total compensation 1.4% in 2024, according to an April 20th filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Yeah, there's that.

Jeff Dziekan

Well, she just because she was 27 million was a couple years ago.

Don Armstrong

Does she have a husband? What does he do? Is he kind of like Nancy Pelosi's husband? He goes to the bank a lot. I would imagine he probably lays low.

Mike Marrs

Oh, you go in the bank. They increased her her pay by 1.4%. So they only she only got a 1.4% rate.

Don Armstrong

Yeah. And how much was that?

Mike Marrs

Well, I mean, what is she making then? Yep. The rest of that stock options and bonuses, that all you do you do your own taxes, Mike? No.

Jeff Dziekan

There you go.

Don Armstrong

Barra's base salary of$2.1 million has stayed constant for several years. Her stock awards rose. Let me finish. Her stock awards rose 11% to$21.6 million, and non-equity incentive plan compensation fell 26% to nearly a measly$5 million.

Jeff Dziekan

Where are where are her stocks at? Is it in Ford or Stellantis? That's it.

Mike Marrs

She's making the phone calls to the here.

Don Armstrong

Wait a minute. Let me get let me get the hotline. Hey Mary, did you hear what Jeff said? Well, uh, and here's part of the reason I would imagine, not that she had anything to do with it, because it's the board of directors, I'm sure, but GM has indefinitely delayed its next generation full-size electric truck program amid waning EV sales and a pivot back to the internal combustion engine and hybrid technology. Automaker has been developing lower cost, refreshed versions of the all-electric GMC Sierra, the Chevy Silverado Escalade or Escalade IQ, and the Hummer SUV and pickup with a target uh start of production of 2028. That, according to three people with knowledge and snitches of the plan, who requested anonymity. Of course they did. So there's only three people. Suppliers were recently informed that the next generation program was halted with no new timetables specified. Supplier executives and analysts told Crane's Detroit business that they do not expect to see a new generation of the electric vehicle line until 2030 or beyond. Oops.

Jeff Dziekan

Crazy.

Don Armstrong

Does Buzz Smith still have a job? I don't know. I don't know. Sorry. I'm sorry. Mike says, I don't want I don't I'm sorry I even brought that up, but I just was wondering.

Jeff Dziekan

Well, you said you wanted us to get ticked off.

Don Armstrong

Okay, well, uh speaking of getting ticked off, let's get ticked off a little bit further. We still don't have Sobra? I'm not fully ticked off. Mars? We don't have Sobra?

SPEAKER_03

Not yet.

Don Armstrong

Have you tried to call her?

SPEAKER_03

Uh I I sent a text, but she's dry uh Bobby's driving, so there ain't no telling.

WeatherTech Millions And Floor Mat Debate

Don Armstrong

All right. CEO of floor mat uh floor mat maker Weather Tech made some high-end moves in Florida's booming mega mansion market, selling a waterfront mansion in Fort Lauderdale for$34 million and a vacant home site fronting the Atlantic Ocean for$105 million. The guy's name is David McNeil. He founded and owns the 37-year-old Illinois Company, or is that Illinois Company, well known for its Super Bowl commercials. In January, President Trump picked McNeil for a spot on the Federal Trade Commission. Of course he did. With his wife, Melissa, McNeil sold the Fort Lauderdale House on Isla Bahia Drive, April 7th, for$34 million. It had been on the market for two years with an initial price of$50 million. Oh, he took a hit. He took a hit. Eight days later, the couple unloaded a three and a half acre parcel on Ocean Boulevard and Manalapan, about 38 miles north for$105 million. I wonder what he's fixing to do.

Jeff Dziekan

We need a GoFundMe page for him to recoup. Yeah, for us for the loss he has.

Don Armstrong

And we ought to hit him up with uh, hey, hey, bud, you got a couple million to spare the in-wheel time uh car talk show.

Jeff Dziekan

Mary Barrett sent us.

Don Armstrong

You can even sponsor the show.

Jeff Dziekan

Yeah.

Don Armstrong

How much of those spots? Oh, fifty thousand dollars apiece. A bargain at any price. You bought the Super Bowl, for God's sakes. You know, 50 million. And I've got Weather Tech in my car.

unknown

Dan?

Don Armstrong

Yeah.

Jeff Dziekan

Well, you helped contribute to the floor. I like them from conundrum. Well, because Buick doesn't have them yet, and they don't know when they're gonna make them. Wait a minute, wait a minute. They don't have what? The rubber floor mats for the for the they advertise the rear seat and the back. Jeff, it's Buick. They make carpeted floor mats. I have carpeted floor mats. I wanted the Weathertech. Why? Because WeatherTech, they're they cover, they're better. The the floor mats that they have factory, they wear out. Oh yeah. Trust me.

Don Armstrong

Guess what? Then you go and buy another set of carpeted floor mats.

Jeff Dziekan

I just buy it one time, get a weather tech, put them in, and they're they're good.

Don Armstrong

But it's like but it's like putting, you know, rubber floor mats in a rubber floor matted truck.

Jeff Dziekan

Kathy's got them in her car too.

Don Armstrong

Okay. Yeah. I'm not putting rubber floor mats in my Corvette. That's just not gonna happen. Well, I understand. I just take the floor mats out and I get some uh Dawn dishwashing liquid and a water and a broom, and you just scrub them back and forth and rinse them off.

Jeff Dziekan

Well, there you lost me at broom. You lost me at broom.

Don Armstrong

Is that what it is? Okay, how about a tire brush? You could use that.

Jeff Dziekan

Uh a small one. Uh-huh.

Don Armstrong

I'll buy you one. Bring them over here. I'll watch that.

Jeff Dziekan

I like my weather tech mats. I wanted them. I got a Weathertech. Well, Buick made the rear floor the rear cargo mat. That fits perfect. And Buick makes the rear seat floor mats rubber, but they just don't make the front ones.

Don Armstrong

Because they don't want to have that that that image of rubber floor mats in a Buick.

Mike Marrs

Okay. They want something a little nicer.

unknown

Yeah.

Jeff Dziekan

Well, I've got I still have you could get you. You don't know what I do in my car. I know that. You can get a few more.

Don Armstrong

You can get the uh the plush, the plush shag carpet. They wear out. Remember the the the the shag carpet floor mats? Kathy had a floor. I bet you could buy those.

Jeff Dziekan

On her uh uh fusion, she actually wore through the the carpeted floor mat and it wore through the carpet in the car. She had to have that replaced. They're they're just cheap. That's you got the car too long. No, her car was three years old.

Mike Marrs

That that's kind of like saying in there or what?

Don Armstrong

You know, there's cheap floor mats, Mike. The I'm sorry, but the ashtrays are full, it's time to get rid of the car.

Jeff Dziekan

Okay. Then what? Note to self. When the ashtrays are full, sell the car. Do they still have ashtrays? No. I don't think they do anything.

Don Armstrong

They have cup holders now. You could get those beanbag ashtrays, I guess, and put them up on the dash.

Jeff Dziekan

Oh, I remember those. The beanbag ones? Because you could put them anywhere. And you had the little crown uh air freshener. It looked like a uh king crown thing. Yeah. That one those on there, too.

Mike Marrs

I thought that was a bottle cap.

Jeff Dziekan

You would you put it whatever you put in a mic is on your business. There you go. Exactly. We know what era you grew up in.

Don Armstrong

Yeah.

Mike Marrs

Yeah, buddy. Uh-huh.

Don Armstrong

Nice. Jeff's getting up, he's leaving. Yeah, I'm done.

Guess The Car Slogan Game

Jeff Dziekan

I'm done. No, I had something here. Uh, if we got time, I just want to run this by if you gotta do. All right. Uh if you were to oh, they popping in. Real quick, if you were to hear a car slogan, would you know what the manufacturer's name is? Probably. Okay. Uh built for the road ahead. Whose whose slogan is that? Uh Ford. Okay, correct. Um, the power of dreams. Ooh, power of dreams. That'd be Honda. Uh, first man, then machine. Dude, you another one.

Don Armstrong

You've got to keep it American made.

Mike Marrs

Okay. All right. Um better talk to Sabra while you can.

Jeff Dziekan

There you go.

Don Armstrong

I know. There she is. There she is. Are you driving, Sabra? We can't hear her. She's muted or something, Mike. She went so indeed.

Mike Marrs

Yeah, she's muted on her end.

Jeff Dziekan

Okay. Um the road isn't the road isn't built that can make it breathe hard.

SPEAKER_00

There we go. I got it.

Jeff Dziekan

Chevrolet. There you go. All right.

Don Armstrong

What do you have? I thought she was gonna say something else.

Hot Rod Tour Road Update

Jeff Dziekan

We expect that on a mic, not you. Yeah, exactly.

Don Armstrong

So where are you guys?

SPEAKER_00

Um take it so, Mark. Um, we are we have Kendai and we're headed to 21 into Spring Branch.

Don Armstrong

Spring Branch, Texas, dot Spring Branch, Houston. Yeah, I got you. Yeah. Okay. So uh Sabra is part of the hot rod. She's part of the Hot Rod Tour of Texas, and this is day two of the tour. And uh, where did you spend the night last night?

SPEAKER_00

We stayed in New Brunswick at the Wyndham there in New Brunswick.

Don Armstrong

Yeah, the drive-in was last night. So you're the drive-in was last night, and uh what was on uh the the agenda at uh drive in.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, we showed Reese at the drive-in and we had a blast.

Don Armstrong

No death.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, we had a costume contest.

Don Armstrong

Oh, they had a costume contest. You would have won this.

Mike Marrs

Yes, we did.

Don Armstrong

Yeah, yeah, good. All right. Yeah, well that that that's what we get from the where she's out in the middle of nowhere, is the problem. And uh they're on the talk through where what is your destination tonight, Sandra? What is your destination for tonight's stay?

SPEAKER_00

We are going to be staying in Fredericksburg.

Don Armstrong

Oh, you're gonna drive all the way to Fredericksburg today. Okay, and then what about tomorrow?

Jeff Dziekan

Now when we stayed in the brothels last time we went, we stayed at a haunted hotel. You were in a haunted room in the hotel. I was he was, and it was haunting him, it was crazy. Uh we were in a room and two doors down from us in the hallway, it was Don. And the story that we heard before you know everyone uh bed down for the night was that the hotel was haunted, it was family, some kids, or something of that nature.

Don Armstrong

And then they closed it down to have it redone.

Jeff Dziekan

Right, to have it redone. I mean, they gutted the whole place. The ghosts are hopefully the ghosts are still there. And Kathy asks about every now and then we ought to go back. Well, yeah, we should take Don with us. Yeah, drag Don along. Uh, but it was it was actually haunted. You had you had noise or something in your room, and we had somebody knocking on the door. Yeah, that's what it was. Yeah, yeah, and there's nobody there. Yeah, they said the kids do that. They come in and mischievous. The kids are the are the ghosts. The ghosts, the ghost kids uh be mischievous in the in the evening. Yeah, that's the story.

Don Armstrong

It was it was a fun time though. We uh we had a fun time.

Jeff Dziekan

Yeah.

Don Armstrong

Uh please continue on with the uh I've got one here.

Jeff Dziekan

Breakthrough. Just the words breakthrough. What's the slogan for what manufacturers that? That would be Cadillac. Uh standard of the world. That would be Cadillac. Cadillac as well. New standard of the world. Cadillac. Cadillac again. Uh better ideas driven by you.

Don Armstrong

Ooh, wait. Better ideas driven by you.

Jeff Dziekan

That would be Ford. Correct. Uh quality is job one. That's a given. That's an easy one.

Don Armstrong

Yeah, that's Ford.

Jeff Dziekan

Yeah. Wouldn't you really rather have a Buick. There you go. Um Blank is all good. Buick is all good. I thought it's all good. Isn't it time for a real car? Another Buick. Wouldn't you really rather have uh Buick? Excellence for everyone. Is that Oldsmobile? Chevrolet. Chevrolet. The more you know, the better it works. We'll be there. Come on, Mars, you gotta contribute something. That'd be Chevrolet. Well, he's over there where they don't have one party. Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet. There you go. Here's one, Mike. You'll get this one right off the bat. And if you don't, I'll give you a hint. Like a rock.

SPEAKER_03

Chevrolet.

Jeff Dziekan

Yeah, Chevrolet. There you go. Okay. Think it's your. There she is. She's back. Go ahead. I heard the beat. Go ahead. I'm going to give you one that's a I don't drivers wanted.

Don Armstrong

Drivers wanted. Oh. Volkswagen. That's uh American, obviously.

Mike Marrs

I think we got her audio. Yeah.

Don Armstrong

That's all right. We've got her audio. And uh Sabra's back with us. And here's here's one of the things that we have found that it's very difficult to can carry a video and audio signal while on the road on the hot rod tour because they are out in the middle of nowhere. They uh stayed in New Braunfels last night and they're headed north up to Fredericksburg today. So tell me the names of the cities that are between New Braunfels and Fredericksburg. Not that I can think of it.

SPEAKER_00

So far, we've gone through blank bow. We went through Sister Down. And we went through and we just hear a little bit of what we went through. Nothing we're gonna do. Some of the room, and then we're gonna bring something more towards. We'll take the little city little hoping. And then we will go. Um probably, I don't know, any major, I mean any little cities that we're going. I know we're doing Luke and Bach tomorrow is where we're finishing off.

Don Armstrong

Do you know how big Luke and Bach is?

SPEAKER_00

It's in the big weeny weeny.

Don Armstrong

The only thing that I know it's in Luke and Bach is the dance hall. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

Don Armstrong

Yeah. So I want to know what's on the lunch menu today.

SPEAKER_00

He does, and it's ready.

Jeff Dziekan

Oh man. We could eat. You mentioned we had a little rain. Has the weather been has the weather been cooperating for you? You'd mentioned a little rain.

SPEAKER_00

You know, it's been gorgeous. Um, last night at the movies, it was just a perfect, beautiful breeze. We've not had had any rain, just some light mist. But so far it's been perfect.

Don Armstrong

No mosquitoes. I heard Bobby say that.

SPEAKER_00

No mosquitoes, no bugs, not too many.

Don Armstrong

And then so what when you get to uh uh Fredericksburg tonight, what do you got in store for everybody?

SPEAKER_00

We are having a meal served to us at the Archery um resort, and we plan on just kicking back and visiting with everybody. Um the band that was around the crowbars is gonna be playing on the back patio, and we plan on just kicking getting into All our friends and family them with us.

Don Armstrong

And some drinking. There's gonna be some drinking drinking going on. I want pictures of Bobby on the dance floor. Bobby, Bobby, you're gonna be on the dance floor. I'll I'll get on the dance floor just for you. That's it. We need video. We need video. We need video. And I know that there'll be a lot of video.

Jeff Dziekan

If you're on the dance floor, I know that there'll be a lot of video of you on the dance floor. We need stills, we need video, we need drone shots, we need it all. That's a good helicopter out there. Yes.

Don Armstrong

Evidence, that's right. So we can hold it against you later on down the road.

Mike Marrs

We're building our own Epstein files.

Don Armstrong

No, no, we're not doing that. No, we're not doing that. Yeah. Well, uh, the best of luck to you guys. So what what happens tomorrow now? Uh when you leave Fredericksburg, where are you headed? I don't know whether they heard or not. So what's what's what what's the destination when you leave Fredericksburg tomorrow morning?

Mike Marrs

I lost him again. Yeah, she's still there, but she's not hearing us.

Don Armstrong

Okay, well, let's just uh let's just uh get out of that and best wishes.

Mike Marrs

Y'all have fun?

Don Armstrong

Yeah, best wishes. Y'all have fun on your on your trip and uh we'll be thinking of you and uh hot rock tour of Texas on Facebook, okay? Very good. Thanks so much. Hey, uh I we got a couple of things that we need to get in. Okay. Uh good. Um shall we do that? Did we run out of time? Well, you no, because somebody uh here on the dais managed to uh put uh their feature in another hour of the show.

Jeff Dziekan

Yeah, well that that does happen to the best of us, and you know I'm the best. All right.

Don Armstrong

Uh Mr. Mars, do you happen to have uh driving destinations? Uh do we need to take a commercial break?

Sponsor Spots And Where To Listen

Mike Marrs

We need to we need to take a break. We missed the first spot. All right.

The tire tread may separate.

Jeff Dziekan

Yeah. The 21 is on the Camaro, or it used to be. That was a different demand fracture.

Don Armstrong

Uh fuel pump may fail on the Lexus GS, the IRS IS, and the R C 2016 through 2022. Loss of ABS ESC, uh extrasensory conception from the brake module failure on the Jeep Cherokee for 2026. Insufficient wells on the child seat tethers, uh Jeep Cherokee 2026. Instrument panel display failure, RAM 1500, 25, 35, 45, and 5500, 25 and 26 model years. Great. Airbags may deploy unexpectedly. Hi, Martha, what's good? Pow!

Jeff Dziekan

Uh-oh.

Don Armstrong

That Honda Odyssey 2018 to 2022. Uh fuel leak at the pipe connection. Genesis. G eighty, ninety, g V seventy, G V eighty twenty-one through twenty twenty-six. A pipe connection.

Jeff Dziekan

Yeah. Wouldn't that be the filler hose, filler line?

Don Armstrong

Does that say anything about that? Good luck. It's the only pipe I guess that's on there. I don't know. It could be the water hose pipe. Could be that. Kia Carnival being recalled for a fuel leak at the pipe connection. 22 to 26. Um, unexpected downshift can cause loss of control on the Ford F-150 2015 to 2017.

Jeff Dziekan

Didn't they have driveshaft issues last last week or two weeks ago?
