Protective Pain
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode we unpack the pain we hold onto in the name of protection and how, without realizing it, that same protection can keep us trapped in the hurt we’re trying to escape. We’re talking about breaking the cycle, recognizing when old wounds are shaping who we’ve become, and giving ourselves permission to let go, feel again, and move forward without fear.
The Pain You Never Left
SPEAKER_00I guess the hot take one. And you know what to do. Come on, bring it in. Come get this hug. How you doing, family? You good? You alright? Alright, family, listen, you know, I have been thinking about how sometimes we can go through something that hurts us so badly that even after it's over, we never really leave it. Life moves on, people move on, situations change, but somehow a part of us is still standing right there where it happened. And what made me really think about it is how easy it is to call that place protection. We say I'm just being careful now, or um I'm just protecting myself, but are you really being careful or are you still hurting? But sit back, relax, grab your drink, and let's take this journey
When Safety Turns Into Walls
SPEAKER_00together. Welcome to another episode of Against All Odds Podcast. If someone betrays you, pain will tell you don't trust like that ever again. If someone takes advantage of your kindness, pain will tell you stop being so nice. If you open your heart and someone mishandles it, pain will tell you don't ever give anyone that much of yourself again. And initially that does make sense. Yeah, you touch something hot, and now you know not to ever touch it hot stuff again, right? But the problem is sometimes we don't just learn from what happened, we start building our entire life around making sure it never happens again. And that's when protection can become a prison. Because now I'm not just protecting myself from the person who hurt me, I'm protecting myself from everyone. I'm not just cautious about that situation, I'm suspicious of every situation. You see, I'm not just setting boundaries, I've now built walls. And the dangerous part is after you've lived behind those walls long enough, you can forget that you built them. You start thinking that this is just who I am now. Nah, I'm just not a people person. I just don't trust people, I don't get attached, I don't need anyone. And maybe that's not actually who you are, maybe that's who you became because you were trying to survive something you never fully let go of.
Remembering Versus Reliving
SPEAKER_00And here's where I had to really think about this thing, family. Um, if I'm constantly replaying what someone did to me because I don't want it to ever happen again, I'm still experiencing it. Maybe they're not doing it anymore, maybe they're not even around anymore. But every morning I wake up thinking about it. Um, every new relationship, I I'm gonna bring it up. Um, every time someone does something that remotely even reminds me of that, um I'm gonna go right there. You know? So um you're studying people looking for signs, you're expecting disappointment before anything has even happened. So the pain I'm trying to I'm trying so hard to avoid, um, I'm actually giving myself every day. Think about that. Sometimes the person who hurt you only did it once, but you've done it to yourself a thousand times since then by replaying it every day. And no, it's not forgetting what happened, it's not even acting like it did not matter. I'm saying there's a difference between remembering what happened and reliving what happened. One gives you wisdom, the other kept me wounded.
How Pain Quietly Changes You
SPEAKER_00So, family, this is where it really gets uncomfortable because if you hold pain long enough, it starts changing you. You can become bitter, yeah. You can become mean, cold, you can become insensitive to other people's feelings because no one cared about yours. Someone asks you a simple question and you're immediately ready to fight because you're not responding to them, you're responding to everyone who came before them. And if we are not careful, we can become the very kind of person we once needed protection from. That is a hard truth. Because no one wakes up and says, you know what? I think I'm gonna become bitter today. But it just happens little by little. You stop apologizing, you stop communicating, you start assuming people's intentions, and you punish people with silence. I reject people before they even reject me. Listen, I learn how to disconnect without explanation. You hear me? And because all of those things make you feel like you have control, you call them strength. But control and healing are not the same thing. Sometimes control is just fear with a nice outfit on.
Control Is Not Healing
SPEAKER_00So, what does letting go actually look like? I think part of it is giving yourself permission to stop preparing for pain. And that's big. Because family, you deserve to experience something without already planning how you're going to survive its ending. You deserve to meet someone without making them carry someone else's identity. You deserve to enjoy a moment without wondering when it's going to fall apart. And most importantly, you deserve to feel again. It may hurt, but the answer cannot be to never feel. Because if you shut the door so pain can't get in, eventually you will realize joy can't get in either. Love can't get in, connection can't get in, peace can't get in. You successfully protected yourself from being hurt, but you also protected yourself from being loved, and that's too expensive. Letting go doesn't mean what happened was okay. It doesn't mean you're inviting the same person back, it doesn't
Letting Go And Feeling Again
SPEAKER_00mean you forgot the lesson. It means I'm no longer making today's decisions from yesterday's pain. And I'm going to let today be today. I'm going to let this person be this person. I'm going to let this opportunity be this opportunity. And whatever happens, I trust myself enough to handle it. Yeah. Whatever happens, I trust myself enough to handle it. And that family is freedom. Because now I'm not living afraid of pain. I'm living knowing pain doesn't have the authority to define me. So family, maybe it's time to put some things down. Not because they didn't hurt, not because they weren't wrong, not because you suddenly don't remember, but because you've carried them long enough. And you don't have to keep touching the womb to remember what happened. You don't have to keep rehearsing betrayal to remember what it taught you. And you don't have to become cold just because someone mishandled your warmth. You can be wise and still be open. You can have boundaries and still love. You can remember and still move forward. And you
Freedom And The Next Step
SPEAKER_00can protect yourself without imprisoning yourself. Whatever happened, let it teach you. But don't let it keep happening inside of you. Family, give yourself permission to feel again. Give yourself permission to trust again. Give yourself permission to go after whatever one more time. Because family, you have spent enough time running around that same mountain. It's time to actually go somewhere. Family, keep growing, keep healing, and keep becoming.
