Bathroom Bliss: Conquering Clutter in Small Spaces
What’s A Good Strategy For Organizing Bathrooms?
Ever walked into your bathroom and felt instantly overwhelmed by cluttered countertops, overcrowded drawers, and products spilling from every cabinet? You're not alone. Bathroom chaos is a universal challenge that affects our daily routines and mental wellbeing.
Tami Gale tackles this common frustration head-on with practical wisdom that transforms bathroom spaces from chaotic to calming. She immediately acknowledges the fundamental problem: bathrooms simply weren't designed with modern product usage in mind. What works in theory often falls apart in practice, especially when multiple family members share limited space.
The solution starts with Tami's tried-and-true Organization 101 approach. By completely emptying your bathroom and sorting everything into categories, you'll uncover forgotten products lurking in cabinet corners and gain clarity about what you actually own. This eye-opening process reveals just how much unnecessary clutter we accumulate over time. The next crucial step involves checking expiration dates on cosmetics and toiletries – a step many of us skip but shouldn't. As Tammy wisely asks, "Do you really want to put something expired on your face?"

Speaker 2:Bathrooms may be small, but they pack a punch when it comes to clutter. In this episode, tammy Gale shares smart, simple strategies to turn your bathroom into a streamlined, stress-free space. Welcome back everyone. Millie M, co-host and producer, back in the studio with owner of Gale Force Organizers, tammy Gale. How's it going, tammy?
Speaker 3:It's great Thanks for having me today. I'm excited about this.
Speaker 2:Oh yes, as a makeup girly, this is one that I really really need. Personally, I'm ready to dive into drawers and cabinets. Let's talk about bathroom bliss. What is a good strategy for organizing bathrooms?
Speaker 3:Well, I got to tell you, bathrooms are renowned for lack of functional storage. It is clearly made by someone who had no idea what kind of products we'd use in the 21st century, and so, really, it only gets compounded the more people who are using your bathroom. So if you've got a whole family using the space, it just continues to multiply chaos, and so there are a couple of things that we can do that at least help you corral the chaos and potentially make things a little easier to manage day to day. If you've listened to any other of our podcasts, you know that we always tell you there's a simple process. It's organization 101.
Speaker 2:And that's the first thing you do is pull everything out of your bathroom, everything out of your bathroom.
Speaker 3:Every time you say it it's daunting. I really encourage you to use the hallway, potentially outside your bathroom, as your sorting space, and really what you want to do is just put all of your like items together hair products go together, toiletries go together, towels and and linens go together, ultimately so that you see what you have, and you will be amazed at what you find in the backs of those drawers and cupboards. It will shock you, and so the first thing you do, once you've sorted and categorized, is check for expiration dates. I got to tell you expiration dates are put there on toiletries and cosmetics for a reason. They do have a shelf life. And think about this Do you really want to put something expired on your face or put a hair gel in some clean hair that expired three years ago? You don't, and so, even though you've invested in it, you clearly didn't use it because you found it in the back of the cupboard.
Speaker 3:It's time to toss it. So toss anything that is expired and toss anything that you no longer use. We have all been tempted at the store to buy things because it sounded like it was going to work for us If we tried it twice and it didn't and we decided we'd keep it, just in case now's the time to toss it. Because now you've got prime real estate that you don't want taken up with the things that you don't use. So now that you've got all the expired stuff thrown away, you've got everything corralled into like categories. Now you can see what you have left and look around and say, will this all fit back in my bathroom? Now you'd all came out of your bathroom in clutter, but will it go back in your bathroom organized? And we often say this is the only time we really encourage True bins and organization. These are the times when you invest in $30 or $40 worth of bins and product can really go a long way in your bathroom Because you need to use the space. So a drawer becomes much more manageable when you use three small containers in it. So you put your toothpaste and toothbrush and floss in one bin, you put your Q-tips in another and your face cloth in the third, and that way when you go you pull it out each time the same way. It also goes back in the same way For larger bins. You want to put those under the cupboard, under the cabinet, under the sink or beside it One of the greatest things it created were Lazy Susan's little plastic containers that most of us use in our kitchen, but it's a beautiful piece of equipment to use in your bathroom.
Speaker 3:Think about it All of those hair products that you need to stand up and the moment you take one from the top shelf, they all come tumbling down. Well, if they're in a Lazy Susan, you just twirl it, grab what you want. Nothing falls out, nothing falls down and it goes back together. This is the time when you can actually go down the aisle at Target or Walmart or even the dollar store and pick up some few inexpensive bins and baskets. Everything goes back in. You've given yourself kind of license to throw away things that you don't use and that are expired, and that ultimately, now things should be cleared and ready for you.
Speaker 3:No-transcript. The other piece of gear that we love that we would never have thought of early on was to use a vertical shoe rack behind the door. You know those $12 plastic shoe sleeves? Yes, grab one of those, label it. And now, all of a sudden, you have 12 individual cubbies for all your toiletries.
Speaker 3:This is perfect if you've got kids that each have their own toothbrush and toothpaste and their hairbrush. You just label their section right at their height and, lo and behold, hairbrush. They just label their section right at their height and, lo and behold, it's off the counter. Because keeping things off the counter is the key to keeping your bathroom clean. It is so much easier to wipe down a bathroom when there is anything on the countertop. You use what you need and then you put it back. And when things are labeled and in bins and easy to find and easy to use, you'll be surprised you'll put it back. And when things are labeled and in bins and easy to find and easy to use, you'll be surprised You'll put it back so that the next time you come in the bathroom it actually is where you want it.
Speaker 2:Perfect advice for how to keep the space clean and clear as far as the countertop and I know that's a mental relief to not see everything everywhere. You gave great advice on. You know, I know for me it's. You have that one level underneath the sink. You're reaching back in the back for things and you fumbling around and you can't find it. That, lazy Susan, is perfect. And then I was going to ask you about multiple users in one bathroom that idea. I'm going to order one on Amazon today, even if it's just for myself to separate some things and just make sure that everything has a place and that everything goes back to its place. Thanks for helping us scrub down the chaos, Tammy.
Speaker 3:You're quite welcome. I encourage you to give it a shot and I bet that you will actually enjoy walking in your bathroom the next time.
Speaker 2:It's supposed to be a place of serenity and it will return to that. Thank you, Tammy. Can't wait to see what we tackle next. Have a great one.
