SPEAKER_04Welcome to Local Legends with Jess. And now my co-host, Jason.
SPEAKER_01Hi, everyone. How are you? Are you excited to be here? I am very excited.
SPEAKER_04We have a very special guest today. Do you want to introduce him? No, it's not good. Okay. So we have a special guest, a local legend, Mr. Justin Lisk. Are you excited to be a local legend?
SPEAKER_02Thanks for having me on.
SPEAKER_04Absolutely. And I have to give a shout out because local legends would not be here unless it was for you and your sponsorship. So thank you for sponsoring this awesome podcast.
SPEAKER_02Thank you for the opportunity.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Yeah. So before we get into it, I'm just going to glaze you, as my son says it. Do you know glaze? Have you heard of that? Teach me. What's glazing is I just learned fire. So yeah. You're fire and I'm going to glaze you.
SPEAKER_01So she's going to glaze you and you're going to be on fire.
SPEAKER_04You're saying it wrong. Just go. Fire because he's cool. Yeah, I know. Okay. Anyway, I'm going to glaze you because you, I mean, insurance, and you always say it, like it's not the most exciting thing to talk about, but it's something we all need and we we have to have it, right? Um, but I get to, both of us, I mean, we get to utilize you as our personal insurance agent. We have whole life with you for our kiddos. And um, that took, I think you were the fourth person to explain what whole life insurance was. And I finally got it. Um, so thank you for that.
SPEAKER_01Took her a while to count.
SPEAKER_04It takes you a while for some things that are very important. But you're also our car insurance agent, and um, we do business together, and you insure about 90% of my clients that come through. So I thank you.
SPEAKER_02And we appreciate it. Yes.
SPEAKER_04So, how do we find you, Justin, my agent. Yes, check us out.
SPEAKER_02Um, www.myagentjustin.com. That's our website. Okay. Um office number 480-983-0418.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, but reach out to us online, give us a call. We're always happy to help. I love it. Yeah. I love it.
SPEAKER_01And he always answers the phone, which I really, really check. No, it's weird. Yeah, but that's what you have to do. Nowadays, people don't want to. If he doesn't answer, that means he's doing something and he'll close you right back. And I appreciate that. That's a that's something that people don't do nowadays. Yeah. So I commend you for that.
SPEAKER_02Thank you. Yeah, and so I've got a team of five people here locally as well. Yeah. Um, they know the Phoenix area, like this is their specialty. Um, you don't have you know kids sitting in his underwear in Nebraska trying to help with Arizona that has no idea what's going on. So we try to be your local specialists and take great care of our customers, like family.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I love that. Oh, that's cool. And you really mean it. You're not just being like a cheesy salesperson. That's what I love about you.
SPEAKER_01Because you're a big all-around nice guy.
SPEAKER_04You should have good guy. It's the Midwest in it. Yeah, it is. All right, so let's get into that. Justin Lisk, where are you from? How did you get to where you are right now in Arizona and doing what you do? Yeah. So give us the mini, Justin.
SPEAKER_02I grew up in Iowa. Okay. In Des Moines, and my mom worked for insurance. She was a safe arm agent, and I grew up and I was like, I'm never doing that. Right. You know, I want to do some cool stuff. So um I went to Iowa State, got my engineering degree, and I wanted to design cars. So that's what I went to school for. Um, I worked for a company that designed like testing equipment for race cars. Wow. I did that for a couple years. And then I got into an international company doing stuff for like tractors and excavators. So like John Deere and Caterpillar were our big types of customers. Um, traveled the world and loved it, and then got married, and we decided we wanted to start a family. And my folks lived here in in Phoenix already. And um I kind of got tired of the winter and I loved the Phoenix area. So my wife and I were like, hey, let's pull the trigger, let's move somewhere nice and warm and where we don't have to shovel and be closer to to our family.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_02So that's what that's what transpired. Um I decided I also didn't want to be traveling all the time. So I was like, I need to find a different career. My mom was like, hey, you know what it's like. Like you've been to my office, you've helped me with events. Right. Give us agency a shot. So I shadowed my agent for a while and he let me work there on the weekends and got to see what it was like. Now, how old are you at this point when you're doing that? This was six years ago. So I was 31. Okay. So I had spent And no kids, right? No kids at that time. Okay. Yep. I had spent 12 years in the like engineering field before all that. That's a scary time. Yeah, it was. Yeah. And so my wife actually didn't want me to do it because it was a lot of uncertainty. A lot of things came with that. Exactly.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And we wanted to have kids, and she was like, I don't, I don't know, I don't like feel comfortable with this. Yeah. I said, well, just trust me. Like, let me give it a shot. If it doesn't work out, I'll do something different.
SPEAKER_01Did that motivate you, the fact that she was a little nervous and you wanted to kind of prove her wrong a little bit? A little bit? That's totally. Yeah. Maybe she did that on purpose. Maybe. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. And you're probably the same way. I feel like with a lot of guys, when like when we're needed, like we step up to the occasion. Totally. You know what I mean? And when people think maybe we can't do something, like that motivates us even more to do it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know what's so funny? Moving to Arizona, I told people I was moving to Arizona, I really don't think I was until everybody told me you weren't. And then I actually just went through with it just to prove people wrong when I was 19. So I know exactly what you're speaking of. I'm exactly the same way. So kudos to you because if I'm not mistaken, no base salary, right? Correct. And it's just straight commission. My whole life's been straight commission except waiting tables.
SPEAKER_02First couple years were like living on savings. Yeah. Right. Um and you know, luckily my parents were here. My mom kind of helped us with, hey, you know, some jump start areas here and there with the business. Yeah. Because she she had a successful agency. So um but yeah, while while I was starting my agency, that was when we had our first daughter or our first child who's a girl. Her name's Maya.
SPEAKER_01That kicked it started too even more, right?
SPEAKER_02So there was not a lot of sleep, you know, between the business and raising this little girl. Yeah. So um it's it's really rewarding now to be able to come and do things like this with you guys and and not stress about working 24-7 and making sure that there's food on the table for the kids. Right.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Super pumped to be here and thank you guys for being a huge part of it. Yeah. And trusting us with like with your guys' customers too. Yeah. That means the world. So I really thank you guys.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, absolutely. But it it's cool because I was thinking about this today. Like being I I I said I might have said this the last time we were we were talking, or maybe I was talking to someone, maybe my boyfriend. But we uh I I remember like now being in my mid-40s, like or when I go back to my my mid-20s and early 30s, like I couldn't wait to be older to, and I swear I thought this because I think I was an old soul, my eyes like bugging out because of allergies, sorry. But I couldn't wait to be surrounded by professional people like myself. Like I know this sounds weird, but I just when I was young, I never felt like I was really respected in business. I felt young. I felt like I was kind of looked down at, like I wasn't there yet. Why are you laughing at me? Well, maybe because people knew you. What? Oh my God, you're fired. I'm over this. But now I think I reflect back now and I'm like, oh my gosh, I'm there. Like I get to do business. Like in my 30s, I wouldn't think that I would be doing a podcast and excited about having my insurance guy that do you know what I mean? Like it's just cool as you get older, you get more confident and just I don't know, you find like people and you just you're able to elevate your businesses together. I think it's cool.
SPEAKER_01The fact of the matter is when you get Did that make any sense? Yes. So for you, did it make sense?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01For you did it make sense, right? In building your business, yeah. You'll use you were using people because you wanted to get business from them. Now you're at the stage of your life, you only work with people you like. That's it. So that's really like enjoyable to know that, oh, damn, something happened. I need to call Justin. Yeah. It's cool that you actually look forward to calling you because you're a good guy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Like he's a real person, right?
SPEAKER_01And what I love about your business is that it's an annuity, right? That you can now could you pass that to your kids, like as far as your book of business?
SPEAKER_02And good question. So, like, I could have my kids join my agency, yeah. Um, as long as I'm alive, they they could work there for me. Right. So if they want to, will be another story. We'll see. Yeah. I mean, the industry's changing a lot. Yeah, it is. It's tough. All the self-driving cars and who knows what it'll be like in 20 years.
SPEAKER_04Now, how do you go into insurance? How do you insure a self-driving car?
SPEAKER_02Good question. So we don't do like the Waymo type ones because those are through like their commercial insurance. But like a Tesla, it's just like a normal car. Yeah. Right. And the rates are just like a normal driving car. Okay.
SPEAKER_04So it's nothing different, even though they have a mode that's self-driving.
SPEAKER_01Just so you know, our friend Jerry that we had on the podcast has a self-driving mode, and it's 30 times better than the way he drives. Really? So it's probably shooting down insurance.
SPEAKER_04That's nice that you're saying 30, 100 times. He is the worst driver ever.
SPEAKER_01He'll be like, this is a good song, right? I'm like, there's a tractor trailer at a stoplight. You have to stop. And it's like, yeah, and I'm like, this is I I can't do this anymore. I'm like, I tell his brother, and his brother's like, he's the worst driver. Everybody knows it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Okay, so it's not different. That's interesting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02We'll have to see what happens over time. It's it's a new area. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You need test cases, right? To see exactly what the payouts and I would agree. They're less they're less likely to get in an accident than a normal person, right? I would think so. Do you think so?
SPEAKER_04I would think so. But then you're also on the road with crazy people.
SPEAKER_01So it's how But it's but it don't forget it's it has so many cameras and it's always alert. I know. It's you sometimes, right? As good as a driver as you are.
SPEAKER_04There we go.
SPEAKER_01You're not the most alert person.
SPEAKER_04I mean fired again.
SPEAKER_01You have the fax machine going, you have third level of a video game next to you.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I'm doing emails with my toes while I'm driving. Actually, the best thing that I did, and I know you guys talked about self-driving cars, but I took Yeah, I took an Uber somewhere out. Oh, to meet you, to meet you and sheer. I took an Uber and I got so much done. It was like a 12-minute drive, but I was like on the phone, I was typing eat, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so then I need a self-driving. But didn't you put money down on the uh Tesla?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the cyber taxi is coming out, right?
SPEAKER_01The next year, what a brilliant idea. You push your button and it goes into where it will drive, and you get a portion of the money that that thing brought in. Yeah, it almost like you Uber it out, right? Yeah, it should probably pay for itself. It's like such a brilliant idea. It is. Why couldn't we come up with that, Justin? No, seriously.
SPEAKER_05Seriously.
SPEAKER_01So you have your business, you have your children, and then before this podcast started, you said you went to bed late last night. What was the reason for that?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so I'm in a men's D League hockey league.
SPEAKER_04So I could never imagine you playing hockey. I don't know why. So that is so cool.
SPEAKER_02You know, like sometimes I'll wake up in the middle of the night and I'll be like, oh man, I forgot to help that person today, or like I need to get that done tomorrow. And the one thing that totally takes my mind off everything is hopping on that ice hockey rink with my flat.
SPEAKER_04So awesome.
SPEAKER_02And it's so fun. So I played travel hockey until I was 17. Okay. So I stopped.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_02Um, I started playing ice hockey again two years ago.
SPEAKER_01Was that your only sport?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01So you were only on hockey yet. Okay.
SPEAKER_02So I started playing two years ago when I was 36. So I took an 18-year break. Wow. Got back into it. I was terrible when I first started two years ago. Yeah. Like my mind wanted to do things that my body just couldn't do. Yeah. Right. But finally, you know, with all the practice and everything, it's coming back and it's so much fun. Yeah. You know, just shooting it with the guys in the locker room. That's so cool. Yeah. One of my buddies. So there's like video cameras in the in the ice rink. Yeah. And he makes these like highlight clips, these highlight reels of our games. Yeah. Of like all the penalties and the codes. Awesome. Yeah, I'll show you after. It's really cool. Yeah. That's it's a good time. Like I've made some really good friends doing it. Yeah. And I'm sure it's competitive. Yeah. Yeah. Do you fight? There's there's some fights here and there, but it's not like the pros. Yeah. We get kicked out for three games if we fight. Oh, okay. We're paying for it. So like we don't want to petty and not get to play. You know what I mean? I can't play to sleep. Yeah, exactly. But it's a good time. So like last night our game started at 10:30.
SPEAKER_04At night?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Wait, what?
SPEAKER_01Because they can't get ice time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's when the Who takes priority? That's when the overweight, you know, old men.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so you guys are last year.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, all the high schoolers, middle schoolers, like all the Japanese are good.
SPEAKER_01Freeform skating for fun.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. All the good guys get to go first. So it was a late night. I didn't get home till like 12 30.
SPEAKER_04Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_02I was up till one o'clock, too. Yes.
SPEAKER_01But that's what's cool. Like that's awesome. Like it's it's being competitive again. And it's also like the friendship that you have with the guys, right? Yeah. And it's also just coming out and like you love your family more than anything. You could tell your face lights up when you speak about your family, but it's also nice that this is your time, right? We all need that. And I think that's really cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We've done a couple tournaments, and like my my wife will bring our kids to come watch me play. When the games aren't too late. We had an 8 30 game and the kids came to that. Yeah. And my son was getting into it. He was like yelling. He's only two and a half. Right. And he was like yelling. Oh, that is so cool. And so it's it's really cool to have them come and come and watch. Do you think they'll get into it? Do you think they they'll play? They'll get on the road. I'm getting my daughter into ice skating. Cool. So I like to take her to like the free skates. Yep. But I think she's gonna be more of like a figure skater. Because she goes out and she just wants to go dance.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that's right. I love that.
SPEAKER_02She just like she'll be out there just like dancing on her ice skates, you know what I mean? Like trying to do little twirls and stuff everything. Um so I think she she might want to do figure skating. Right. But my son Kaiden, I could see him wanting to wanting to play hockey. He's like, he's a hundred percent dude. Like he runs up to walls and stuff, falls down, doesn't it? Couldn't hurt my daughter, who's two years older. He's just like full boars. Yeah. That's Sophia. Yep, no kidding. Yeah, that's Michael's afraid of her. She's nine, he's 14. Yeah. Totally afraid of her. He's gotten huge too. I've seen some videos. He's grown like crazy the last couple years. It goes.
SPEAKER_01But you know what it is? He's gonna be a freshman at Chaparrell. Now he's at 14. Now it's like, wait, hold on. Friends, wait, sports, family, friends. Wait, girls. And then girls start coming like over here. Yeah, yeah. Then you could I now I'm in the gym. That's all he does. Gym. I'm locked in, dad. I'm locked in. And we're gonna have broccoli lifting. I'm gonna get 135 up. But he's like shredded right now. It's actually cool to see. Good for him. Yeah. He actually motivated me to get in the gym, which is cool. Oh, yeah. Yeah. He's like, Dad, when are you gonna get in the gym? I'm like, I will, Mike. And honestly, it's been a year since I went back to the gym, like consistently. So I try to get three days a week, and it's actually my like alone time. Yeah. Like I'll go in there. It's only 45 minutes to an hour, but it's like nice just to get it. That's why we were late today.
SPEAKER_04He was at the gym.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it makes a big difference. Like you got to take care of yourself mentally, you know what I mean? And have a chance to reset. Yeah. You need an outlet. Yeah, you need something like that. Right? Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Because especially like our business is we're consumed with it. It's not, we're we're not nine to five clocking out, and you could actually just come home and and be home and be engaged with the family. Like it's constant. So that's I need something.
SPEAKER_02It's good to force yourself to take a break. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Maybe I'll get into hockey with you. There you go. Yeah. Can I join the men's league? Why don't we do like a softball league? I don't want to play softball. Why? Not with you. Too much pressure. I just think you'll be mean to me.
unknownI won't.
SPEAKER_01You know what's so funny? We only had one experience in our in our relationship of playing a sport, and it was in uh Cabo. And it was like a president's club trip, and we played volleyball together, right? Yeah. I become like a maniac ultra competitive. And a couple times, like she missed the ball here and there, but she was in front of me.
SPEAKER_04So when it got deep in the door, I missed the ball probably once. And he was annoyed. What is wrong with you? Okay. I'm sorry. And then I got really nervous. Like I felt like I was I was very pressured. And then what happens?
SPEAKER_01Like balls there, and I'm like, she's definitely not getting to this, right?
SPEAKER_04I saw the shot. I had the shot. He literally went in front of me and slammed it and threw me on the ground. Jason, that's exactly if that's how it happened. Yeah, that's exactly how it happened. Threw me on the ground. Everyone's like, whoa, bro. And he's like, she's fine. That definitely didn't happen. I was spitting out sand. I was mortified.
SPEAKER_01She had she lost her teeth. We just put her new hair. The best part of that. Do you remember the funniest part of that whole day? No. So the night before we were out drinking, and I'm like, oh my God, Jess, if you tip these guys, like, don't get you anything you want. I'm like, here's 300. Kill the guy in room 327. And he's like, where? I'm like, I'm just kidding, dude. That next day, I'm playing volleyball and I break my toe. And they're like, you got to go see the medic. I get there, it was the guy that was serving me drinks. I'm like, hold on one second here.
SPEAKER_00My toe's purple. You bandaged my calf. Like, what is going on? You were the guy serving me drinks. How are you a proper medic? Like, so my toe sideways. Do you remember that? God, yes, that was great.
SPEAKER_04How did we get on that topic?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. But go ahead.
SPEAKER_04Oh, because I want to play hockey. And then you went to volleyball.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah, it's a lot to get into hockey. I think it's too much.
SPEAKER_04I've probably skated once. I need another outlet.
SPEAKER_02I'll figure that out for myself. You got options.
SPEAKER_04That's great.
SPEAKER_01So what is how long do you think you'll play for? I think you got it too much. How long can you play for? I mean, so you don't want to.
SPEAKER_02I mean, there's there's there are guys out there playing that are there's a guy that used to play in the NHL that plays on like the Sunday practice in Gilbert. And he's probably like 70. Oh my god. Really? That's sick. And is he good? He's still good. That's awesome. Yeah, like he's not the fastest, but he's still like he had but he can handle. Yeah, yeah. He holds his own. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's sick. That's pretty cool. I would have never thought that.
SPEAKER_04Especially hockey. Like, I understand golf. Like, that's not that doesn't take much, but hockey. Yeah. I'd be really nervous if you were seven years old getting on a rank, even walking.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Like old team USA won the Olympics. Oh, yeah. Like you were pumped for that. So like that brought a lot of energy, I think. Yeah. Yes. To the leagues. So that's so cool. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Do you think that's the best goalie that you've ever seen?
SPEAKER_02Oh, that was the best. Yeah, that was the best goalie.
SPEAKER_01That was the most insane thing I've ever seen. By far. Yeah. Yeah. Because they were a way better team. Oh, yes. It's not even close. They play that 10 times, they probably lose seven. Exactly.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. It was the whole like miracle in ice cream. It was awesome.
SPEAKER_04That's so cool.
SPEAKER_02It was pretty cool. Because USA hasn't won it for forever. 40 years, something like that? Since it's long? Oh well, I don't know. There's something like that, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Sorry, what were you were you asking before? Have you ever do you golf or play any other sports? I like to golf, yeah. It's funny. So I play hockey left-handed and I golf right-handed. How did that how did you do that? I don't know how. You found the set of righties? Well, that's just what I started with with golf, yeah. That's interesting. So I do them totally opposite.
SPEAKER_01That's really interesting.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Wow. I like I like to golf once in a while, though. Yeah. My brother's really good at golf, and his best friend works at Ping. Oh, so that's cool.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So like they're always out golfing and trying new clubs and stuff. And I can't hang with those guys.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But they're they're still fun to be around. That's that's so cool. I still can't get over the guy that plays in his 70s. That's amazing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Wow. Yeah, it's pretty cool. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Can we talk about insurance real quick or is that boring?
SPEAKER_02Whatever you guys want to.
SPEAKER_04Because I want to talk about insurance. Okay, what do you want to talk about? I'm really excited. Can you explain? Because I try to tell my friend, like my kids think they're going to be loaded. Well, I think they're yeah, think they're going to be loaded because I have a couple policies for them.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_04Can you explain why that's beneficial for parents to get for their kids at a young age? Sure.
SPEAKER_02So what you have for your kids is what I have for my kids. And um it's a permanent policy for them that we parents can pay off for them in like 20 years, which is what you and I are both doing. So we can take care of it while we're still working. And pump some money into it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh, and let it start to grow and earn dividends and things like that.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_02Um, if they're gonna be loaded from it, like, you know, that's not really the purpose of it.
SPEAKER_00Um that's what I tell them. But he's such a nice guy.
SPEAKER_02The reason it's important and like why I encourage you to think about it and why I do it for my kids is because like we talked about at the beginning, most parents reach a stage at some point where they're struggling financially, especially when they first have kids. Yeah. And when your kids get to that age, if they want to have kids, this will be something that mom and dad paid off for them. Right. To help them know that they've got coverage in place to take care of their family, right? If something happens to them. Right, right. So it's really for you guys to kind of help protect that next generation after them, right? Yep. And if you guys aren't around and something happens to your kids, that's a gift from grandma and grandpa. Yeah. Right. Yeah. And that's why I love it. It's some it's really inexpensive, it's easy for you guys to do. And it just it's that peace of mind for your kids and for their family at a time they might not be able to do something for themselves.
SPEAKER_04And they have that policy for a lot. I mean, that's that's their policy. And they got it at such a because they were so young, they got a crazy deal on it, right? Exactly. Could they take money against that?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So it they earn cash value. Okay. And so, like if an emergency comes up and they need to get some money out of it, they can take a loan against it at any point in time. Doesn't affect their credit, yeah. Right. Their their own bank essentially, yeah. And use it for whatever they need to. Maybe your son wants to start a restaurant.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Right? And he would have some money there to get things going if he wanted to. Yeah. Um, so it it can be used for a lot of different things.
SPEAKER_01And when you pay it back, are you paying yourself back the interest? Yeah, it's like a 401k loan then.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah. It's just like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Interesting. Yeah. So it's really cool. Yeah. And it's one of those things like I just I feel good when I have that for my kids. And I know a lot of parents feel good to have it, like thinking, hey, this is for your future family. Exactly. You know what I mean? It's a really nice gift to to pass down.
