What's up everyone? Welcome to the Carmody Podcast, where comedy meets your slash my commute. I am your host, Dave Thompson. This is episode 9.5. If you guys don't know me, hello. Hello. My name's Dave Thompson, a comedian in Southern California, beautiful Southern California. Wetter. The wetter. The wetter. The weather is beautiful right now. And got a lot to talk about. A lot that's happened in the last week. Haven't released an episode in one week from today. Am I a slacker? No. I've just been really busy. But consistency is key. And that's the thing that rings in my head. Get back to two episodes a week, you sicko. So you're getting your two episodes this week. 9.5's coming out today, and episode 10's coming out probably on Friday. Really excited about that as well. So let's talk about it. What has been happening with me? Well, this last Friday, I had two sold-out shows for my I.E. Comedy show at Above the Iron Comedy Club in Menifee. My headliner was Jack Shaw. You guys might know Jack. He's a Kill Tony golden ticket winner. He tours all over the country. And he sold out both the shows. Absolute masterclass on both of his headlining sets. I also had some amazing, talented local comedians as well. We had Mike James from Silly Mannered. We had Frank Martinez, who's the owner of the Above the Iron portion of the club. We also have Melissa Name, who is the other half of Silly Mannered Comedy. And we had KJ Robinson. He's from Detroit. He does stuff at Chatterbox. And he's an absolute master of the cut the comedies. Super funny. Really cool guy. I love having KJ on at shows. He's he's like a shoe in. You know, you know there's certain people that you just are not worried about whatsoever doing a set. Like you always know that maybe they don't ace every set to the point where it's like standing ovation level, but they're consistent and they and they have such a high percentage of just murdering a set. That's KJ. If you want a shoe in for somebody that's gonna do their best, it's KJ. KJ is one of my faves for sure. One of my faves. Fantastic. I booked him quite a few times, and I'm gonna continue booking him because he's hilarious. Uh so yeah, the shows went super good. Uh, there was uh just so many people there. If you guys have never been there, it's located above the iron, which the iron is gray iron brewing, it's the top floor above gray iron brewing, which is in Mennefee, right off of Newport. You definitely want to check it out. They had a car show called Pints and Pistons that was happening. They also had a running club, and we had two sold-out shows, so like it was what was happening in the city. The city was all at gray iron, it was absolutely freaking amazing. Uh, I was so proud of everybody coming together and the door guys that were at above the iron, um, helping out with the sound and with pictures and with seating and with parking and just everybody that it took to kind of make it what it was, and then obviously us comedians doing our jobs. Um, I had a really good set. The first set, the second set I had with the second show was good, but the first one was exceptional because the crowd was ready to laugh at everything. I mean, I got 54 laughs in seven minutes, and I was I was very happy, very, very happy with how with how it went. Um, everybody's first sets were electric. Um, the second one, they made you work for it a little bit more. You know, they were a little like, hey, I wish I could be in bed right now, or hey, I'm a little tired, so you're gonna have to squeeze it out of me a little bit, you know. I don't laugh easy, I don't laugh easy. You ever have those guys at your shows, guys or gals, whoever, they'll just stare at you. You know, like they're like, I don't laugh easy. I don't laugh easy. You better be real funny, Bucko. Be funny. I had that happen to me one time. I I was talking to these women before the show, and they were telling me that they had never been to a local comedy show before, they had only been to big, like, national headliner shows, and they're like, Are you guys funny? And I said, Yeah, no, definitely. And she said, You guys better be funny, because if not, I'm gonna walk out of here. And I'm like, Oh, alright, thanks. It's it's always nice to get pressure from a 65-year-old woman, 65-year-old white woman before you go on stage. Like, thanks. As if I didn't have the pressure of every eye in this room on me, and as if I didn't have the pressure of making you guys laugh. Now I know that if I don't make you laugh specifically, that you're gonna walk the frick on out of here. So thanks a lot for that, ma'am. That's a very uh I'm very appreciative for you. I'm so happy. Thank you, Karen. That's nice. Uh, other things. Uh this past weekend was Father's Day, it was awesome. I spent my Father's Day with the familia. We went to church on Sunday morning, then we went out to lunch afterward, went to little Miguel's Jr., by the way. Shout out freaking Miguel's Jr. Hello. The food at Miguel's Jr., if you guys have never had it, first of all, punch yourself in the face. Miguel's Jr., a socal staple. Absolutely delicious Mexican food, wonderful Mexican food. But I do have one gripe, they do not put their salsa in cups anymore, they put it in a rippable, a very rippable package, and it kind of gets everywhere and it makes a mess. So, not too happy about that. I I love the the feel of the little cup, makes you feel like you're at just some like little taco stand where you're at the little cup, but no, they're corporate now, so they need actual packages. They're just they're too corporate, they're too corporate for us. You know what I'm saying? These freaking corporates. By the way, I'm in the car ordering Chick-fil-A for myself right now. We're gonna you guys are gonna come through the drive-thru with me. That's exactly what you guys are gonna do. You guys are gonna come to the drive-thru with me. You guys are gonna get Chick-fil-A with me for lunch. Absolutely. I don't know if you can hear all these little buttons and whistles that I'm doing right now. Hopefully, it doesn't stop my recording. Is it stopping my recording? Just ordered for drive-thru so I don't have to go inside. That's beautiful. Okay, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. No, I didn't even stop it. That's wonderful. Alright, so uh yes, Father's Day was awesome. Went to lunch and then for dinner I barbecued. I barbecued meats. I had three and a half pounds of barbecue chicken, I made T-bone steaks, I made ribeye steaks, I had the for the first time, I had never done this before. I was proud of myself because I wanted to try it. I'm never afraid to try a new recipe, and sometimes I get on a kick where I want to do something and I just end up doing it. I made ribs, a full rack of ribs in the oven. I took out the membrane, by the way, there's like a it's called a membrane, and I was like, What? I don't know what a freaking membrane is. So after you defrost, because I got like the frozen big rack of ribs after you defrost them for a full day and you're ready to start cooking them in the oven, which you have to wait hours in the oven. You gotta kind of slow cook them. The membrane is this like thin layer of skin at the bottom, the bone side up of the ribs. So I took out that mem took off that membrane, which was nuts, and then I I wiped it with some olive oil, got olive oil all over it, little little stickies, right? I had this like applewood smoked like rib rub that I put all over it, and then I put it in the oven at 275 for just under two hours. Because our our our oven, honestly, it it says 275, but it's more like 500. I mean, that thing is not correct. So I put it in there, I took it out, I laid down two big pieces of foil, I put a bunch of honey, a healthy amount of honey at the bottom, two big chunks of butter, put the ribs from the tray onto the foil, put barbecue sauce all over the ribs, then I wrapped up that foil into a real tight, uh real tight fit all around the ribs. Then I put it back in the oven for another hour, and when they came out, they were tender, it wasn't fall off the bone tender, it's my first try. They were tender, they were delicious, it was sweet and savory and wonderful, and I was proud of myself because I made ribs. I was proud of myself. That's what it is, that's what it is. I love cooking. If you guys didn't know that about me, I actually really do love cooking. Uh, other things. Uh yesterday was Monday. I went out on a yacht. I went on a yacht. I'm on a boat! I'm on a boat. Yeah, I don't deserve to be on a boat. I don't have money for a boat. I don't have boat money, but what I do have is friends in comedy who have birthdays who do things on boats. So we had a whole birthday fiasco on the boat. I saw sea lions, uh, I saw a bunch of friendly faces. We did a whole we did a whole thing on the boat. We had food, they had lasagna, lasagna on the boat. They had lobster mac and cheese, which I gotta tell you guys, lobster, especially in mac and cheese, that's like a decadent thing. That's like a ooh, fancy. And I was like, no, I'm good. Do you have just regular Mac? I don't want lobster in my Mac. You know? I don't I I'm no, I'm I'm okay. I don't want lobster in my Mac. No, thank you, please. I'm okay. I'll take the Mac and Cheese. And I ate a bunch of Hershey's kisses. A ridiculous amount of Hershey's kisses were consumed. And that's just what it is. Uh, and then I did a spot last night. Went to Proof Bar. If you guys don't know, Proof Bar is in downtown, downtown, Santa Ana. The show started at 10:30, which is a ridiculous time to be in an alleyway. Yeah, by the way, the show is in an alley behind the bar. The bar itself is is whack enough. But then when you go to the alley behind the bar, you're like, what am I doing here? At one point on one side of the alley, there was a weirdo dude playing Sonic the Hedgehog on like a Game Boy, and then on the other side of the alley, it was like a crazy guy with headphones on talking to himself. So we were kind of cornered, and it's very dangerous, but there's like 10 of us, 15 of us. So, like, yeah, we we could have freaking taken anybody out, you know what I'm saying? Like, nobody's gonna like kill us all, but you never know if someone's gonna try. That's what I'm saying. If there was any place that someone would try, it would be there. In the alleyway. It's kind of wild. But it went pretty good. Uh I'm gonna submit some jokes today, some little clips to a little uh show. Um, I don't know. Let me s uh I don't know if you guys have ever done this before, but submitting to it's definitely nerve-wracking, submitting to different people, and you kind of like look at your set, you kind of like break it down, and you're just like, Huh, are they gonna like this? Are they gonna not like this? Are they gonna notice this joke didn't work the same way I noticed this joke didn't work? Because the whole set, like this particular set that I'm sub like submitting, like everything worked except one one joke, and then the tags of the joke worked, but the actual premise of the joke didn't work. So everything but everything else around it works, so it's like I'm not gonna scrap the whole the whole set because one little thing didn't work, but I'm also not gonna cut it out. Because they don't want to see skips in the video, you know what I mean? They don't want to see like, oh, you took out where you bombed. Like, it it didn't bomb, it just didn't nobody really laughed. Is that a bomb? Is that bombing a joke? Maybe. But talking about it, like candidly with the audience afterward kind of made them laugh, so that's what it is. I just realized too I had my air up like all the way, so you guys probably couldn't freaking hear a word I said. That's what it is. Um yeah, so I'm really excited. This weekend I have a show on Saturday in Canyon Lake. Uh I'm featuring doing 20 minutes, which I'm very excited about. It's been a little bit since I had my chance to do 20 minutes, so I'm gonna do this 20 minutes, and uh that'll even help me even more getting ready for this heat wave comedy tour. There's a lot of stuff I've been adding to my current material that I have, and a lot of new material that I'm writing. So I'm very excited to be able to stretch the legs a little bit with that. The Chick-fil-A line is so long. Yeah, so I'm excited to stretch my legs with that, and uh just looking to get more opportunities and get better uh more comfortable at submitting things. Um and and and doing sets with that in mind. Like trying to lock in when I'm on stage to a point where it's like it's not that I'm not locked in, but sometimes like I'll try like a little more liberally. I'll try a certain like certain jokes out, but maybe some sets I just need to just do the thing so that I get the the tape and then try jokes, you know, in other places where it's not so amazing to tape, you know what I mean? So we'll see how it goes. I'll keep you guys updated. But thank you guys so much for listening for all the support. I see all the views and all the people that listen to this. Thank you so much for the views, the feedback, for all the love. I really appreciate it. Episode 10 will be out this weekend. I'm very excited. A lot of stuff coming up, a lot of stuff uh we're gonna talk about. Uh, so thank you guys so much for listening to the Carmen Podcast. I hope you guys have a wonderful day, a wonderful week, and uh yeah, we'll talk soon. Love you guys. Goodbye.
