What's up everyone? Welcome to the Carmody Podcast. We're comedy meets your slash my commute. I'm your host, Dave Thompson. This is episode 12.5. What's good everybody? How are we doing? Hopefully we're doing well. I'm out. It's late. It's late. It's early, I should say. It's past the midnight hour, but before the 1 a.m. hour. So in and out is still open. If you guys were unaware, in and out is open until 1 a.m. Except around Friday and Saturday, they're open until 1.30. Uh for a chocolate shake, if you guys were unaware. If you hear me slurping on something, it's because I have a delicious In N Out chocolate shake, God bless, in my hand. Uh Irvine Improv. I did not get up. Nice bits. You know, there was the last time when I got up was really, really fun. I actually just posted a clip of uh the DoorDash joke that I do. Um and got a couple thousand views, like almost 3,000 views, or might be over 3,000 now. So that was cool. It's nice getting a little recognition, you know, when you do a joke and people like it, you know. Sorry, I'm gonna take a sip of water now. Wow, that probably sounds terrible on the pod. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I just lost I just lost 10 people or more. Maybe I just lost everybody. Maybe it's over. It's over for me. Carmed's over. Carmedians, I love you guys. You guys are amazing. Thank you so much. You guys are inspiring me. I feel inspired. Want to talk about inspiration? I feel inspired. You know, I I've posted a couple clips, uh, and I like the response that they're getting. I have a plan for some social media uh things happening, and you know, on the last episode I was talking a little bit about uh freak, I was talking about just like a work-life comedy balance, and I'm really like I've been doing a lot of thinking about how I want to do things because I want to do this, you know, I want to do this as a job. I would love to do this as a job. This is literally would be like the funnest job ever, and I and I feel like I could do it. I have the determination and the and the ability to do it if I was able to, and that now is the able-to part, you know. Because, you know, ideally I would have like a nice camera to record myself, a nice computer to edit myself, and all of that stuff. But you know, I I have a phone, and if you know if my friends are there, sometimes they'll record me on their cameras, which look good. Shout out freaking Mike Baker, the GOAT, uh, and Melissa as well. So I definitely have ways to be able to like record things that I feel like are really good. Um but I just don't have the equipment myself, you know. The only thing I really do have is a car to get me from point A to point B. Um, but I just I want to take the steps of like consistent podcasting, of consistent posting on social media, consistent networking with certain people, and I just really have stepped away from like the absolutely the absolutely no extracurriculars, and now I'm doing a little bit more of just like hanging out instead of just the like go go go go go go go go go. And then as soon as the mics are done, I go home. I've been doing a little bit more networking, a little bit more talking uh on Instagram and and you know getting out to different people's shows and things like that. Um, and so I just I want to just take a step back from like everything how I'm doing it right now, and kind of just now that I feel a little revitalized in my brain, just look at what I'm doing with with all my time, and I know the things that I want to adjust and change so that I could do something like this, and now I'm gonna do it. So this is all a part of that, you know. I'm trying to figure it out. I would love to do this, and I hope you guys believe in me and in that. You're listening to the pod still, so hopefully, but this is something I really do want to do, and I have a passion for it. I I love it. Uh I said it out loud, you know, it's kind of like you know, telling somebody you love them for the first time. You know, I'm saying out loud, I love comedy. I love doing comedy, I love listening to comedy, I love writing comedy, I love performing comedy, I love making people laugh. At my silly jokes about my silly life. That's that's wild and it's crazy and it's it's uh it's not always sexy. Sometimes it's bleak, sometimes it's depressing, sometimes it's it's wild, but at the end of the day, it's my life. And I'm enjoying this. I love it. I love it. So now you guys know. Now you guys know who I love. I love comedy, it's what I love to do. This is like the the coolest hobby I've ever had. Like, obviously, gaming when I was doing a lot of gaming was very fun. Um, but I mean this is this is another level of community, this is another level of discipline and hard work, and and and I just I I get so happy. It's just it seems hard because I feel like I can't even share my winds sometimes. But this is my pot. I'm gonna share it. Like I I probably mentioned it before, but when I went down to San Diego, it felt so good to go to San Diego to get up in front of a crowd with comics around me that I didn't even know. You know, people that I'm not familiar with, and just and just rip it. Just absolutely rip it and have a good set, and then have people come up to me like I want to book you for this, this, this, and this. And I got booked four times off of one open mic spot. Four times, and I'm proud of that. I'm happy about that. I'm glad that that's something that's happening now. I'm glad that my first minute is getting me like 11 to 13 laps in the first minute. It's it's increased my average laps per minute over my sets like so much, and I'm so grateful for that. And I'm breaking down every line, and I feel like now that I'm you know a couple years in, I'm breaking down every line and I'm removing words and I'm changing things, and in my mind, I'm thinking like everyone's looking at me like, wow, Dave's doing the same minutes. He's talking about his grandpa, he's talking about his dad, he's talking about Doordash. We've heard this all before. Yeah, we know you're homeschooled, but there's so much changing in that. There's so much changing. The orders have been changing, words have been changing. Trying to use these jokes in my best three minutes, my best five minutes, and there's some of the beginnings of my 10 minutes, of my 15 minutes, of my 25 minute set. You know, when I do 45 minutes, this is this is how it starts. You know what I mean? And I I I I don't want to get into a place where I feel like I can't feel comfortable performing new things or performing old things again. So sometimes you gotta go out to other spots because you I feel like it's not like I it's not like I gotta shake it up if I'm local. But then I go to other spots and they haven't seen me before. Maybe the comics don't know me or the audience has never seen me before because I've never performed there, and then I do these jokes and they work and and the and the jokes are getting the jokes are getting tighter, they're getting funnier, and I'm trying to punch stuff up, and I'm I'm I'm just I'm I'm proud of myself. I'm I'm proud of myself. Like now I'm gonna get all emotional. Like it wasn't but just a a number of years ago that all this stuff happened with my dad, and if you guys don't know, you get to see come see the show. But all this stuff happened with my dad, and I had nightmares for years, and I couldn't even talk about how I was feeling, and I couldn't talk about what I what was going on in my head because it was so painful, and I remember one night specifically I woke up and it just hit me, you know, being a son, realizing that your dad isn't gonna be in your life anymore because he's a dangerous person. You know, it just it freaking hit me, and I was just like I just I just like woke up in the middle of the night and I just started crying. And my wife got up with me and she was hugging me and asking me what was going on. It was hard to get words out. And I just I just remember telling her just like the what I could get out was just I miss my dad. You know, because as crazy as my dad was, he was still my dad. I wanted him to be that thing that he wasn't. I wanted him to be that father that really loved me, that wanted to spend time with me, that cared about the things I cared about, that was proud of me. I wanted to make him proud, you know? And he's just not, he's that version of my dad is gone. That was a facade. That wasn't real. That's gone. My dad is not that person. My dad maybe never wanted to be that person. Maybe that just kind of just happened, you know, and he was just banging my mom, I guess, and then he just kind of had kids, and it just happened. He just kind of played it until he was done playing the role, and then he just went crazy. I don't know. But comedy has allowed me to, in a way that nothing else has. Comedy has allowed me to open up and to speak about pain, and it's allowed me to look at things in a lens that maybe others can't see. And someone might look at in my life and they might just see tragedy or sadness or misfortune, unlucky, whatever word you want to use to describe it. But I look at it and I see gold now. I look at that and I see that all of these things happened really for a reason. And this might be the reason. You know, there's a Bible verse. I know some of you maybe don't believe in the one true God, but there's a Bible verse. It says that, and when he has tried me, I shall come forth as gold. Basically talking about that. We go through trials and tribulations, and and they're they are for a reason. They're to refine us, to to get to the gold that's within us, within our souls, the goodness that's within our hearts, to peel back all these layers of humanity, of anger and sadness, and and and everything, and to really get to like the golden portion of your soul. And I feel like comedy, I know this sounds so crazy. People are like, what the frick are you talking about? You're freaking psycho. First of all, I haven't taken a sip of my freaking chocolate shake in like eight minutes. Had to do that real quick. Um, yeah, man. I man. Late women listen to this. Frick. Um yeah, comedy has just done so much for me. I'm just I'm thankful to God that I've found comedy, that I found it through a stinking Bible study. That that's how I found it. And I'm grateful that I get to do it, and I really am trying to do material that is palatable and and grateful. And sometimes I know that I get like real serious on stage and stuff, and I'm trying to like change that where I'm not being so serious that I'm smiling a little bit more and I'm being a little bit more animated, and I'm trying to act out more things. I don't want to be like rigid and be like, oh freaking. Yeah, I just not trying to be a freaking blockhead, you know what I'm saying? But comedy, it's just it's done so much, and I'm so appreciative that I have this, and uh, I almost just saw an accident in front of me. That would have been insane. Um, this car just absolutely just doesn't give a frick, and he would just pulled in front of somebody, almost freaking just hit him. There's really nothing else to say other than he just freaking hit him. Or was about to, he didn't actually hit him, but whatever. It's karmic, you never know what's gonna happen. Uh, but yeah, I'm I'm very appreciative for comedy. I'm appreciative for my family in my life that understands the things that I'm doing and pursuing, and uh I'm thankful for my friends. I'm thankful for all these amazing friends I have in comedy, and the community is amazing. Thank you for you guys, the Car Medians that that message me. There's there's like 10, 12 of you that really like you guys leave comments, you message, you you reach out, we talk when we see each other in person, all that good stuff.
