What's up everybody? Welcome to the Carmody Podcast, where comedy meets your or slash my commute. I am your host, Dave Thompson. This is episode number 18. I know what you guys are thinking. Wow, are we getting three episodes in a week? No, you're actually getting four episodes this week. You know why? Because I fell behind a week, because I have family stuff going on, I have life stuff going on, and there's just a lot of stuff going on. But you know what? We back on track. We are here, okay? So we're back, and I'm not alone today. No, I'm not alone. This person, the last time I had him on the pod, I picked up his intro. I picked it up, and he's never forgiven me since. This person, he looks down on me because I like Disney. But I saw him at Disney a couple days ago. Don't let him fool you. Everybody, the one, the only, Carl's bad favorite. Ed Selwyn, everybody. Hey, what's up?
SPEAKER_01What's up, Dave? Man, I'm living a dream, dude. Just uh driving to a dentist appointment, you know. Doing a thing. You're getting some implants, dude? Yeah, I'm getting some uh government trackers put in. Uh because let's go, dude. Yeah, uh why not?
SPEAKER_00I mean what in your mouth?
SPEAKER_01What what why not uh talk to Dave Thompson on my way to the dentist, uh riding a high. Uh talk about it. Tell tell the folks, man, what happened.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I'm gonna tell you what happened. So last night we had uh when I say we, Above the Iron Comedy Club had a cancellation. Their Thursday night shows are independent producers, they're not club produced, they're independent, approved producers. And the person, for whatever reason, I actually don't know what the reason is, but whatever, dropped out, canceled, whatever the thing was. And so there was people that were like, hey, we want comedy. So Frank's like, yo, he's the owner of the club, by the way. Operator, owner, whatever. Owner, operator, freaking guy who's there. He's like, hey, let's put together a showcase. I'm on the showcase, Ed is on the showcase, John Frazier, Melissa Nami, Mike James, Josh Martinez, Josh Baker. That's the show. And it was a banger, okay? Five dollar tickets. It should have been a $25 show. With the amount of laughs that these guys were getting, it should have been a $25 show. But it wasn't. It was five dollars. The room started filling up. We had to end up putting some more chairs out because we had more people than anticipated, even though, even if it was a last-minute show. And it was freaking fun. Even with the three Latinas that were sitting, was was that was the closest one a Latina? Or was she white? I don't know what she was. The one on the right was a torta for sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they were a tough poll, but uh everybody everybody else had a great time last night. I'll say that.
SPEAKER_02No, it was it was amazing, and it's one of those nights that you remember because you go into certain shows without expectations. Certain shows that you kind of put together last minute, or or maybe the morning of you only have just a couple tickets sold. You don't know what it's gonna be. Is it gonna be five people in the room? Are you gonna sell five tickets, but only two of those people actually show up? You never know. And then next thing you know, we're there, and there's a retirement party happening for a detective outside, and all of Menaphi PD is sitting outside, and then all of us felons are inside with a room that started filling up, and we have a great time. You know, you never know what's gonna happen.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, uh I feel like last night was transformative, man. I mean, I I feel like uh those are the types of things that comedians live for. Um a room full of people who are there to laugh, to have a good time. Um it was great. I mean, I I I I I had so much fun. Uh hell, 18 hours later, I'm still like buzzing. I'm still so hard. Ladies and gentlemen, Ed is still hard. Yeah, okay, sure. Figuratively, I am still rock hard.
SPEAKER_02Figuratively erect, emotionally erect, okay? I get it. I get it. We all are, you know. And and if you weren't there, that's just that's just fooie on you. You know, that's really what it is. You should be following the pages, you should be following our journey because we have this group of door guys at Above the Iron, uh, Heat Wave Comedy Tour, this like North County San Diego slash Menifee, Mirietta Temecula group of comedians that is is getting real good. You know what I'm saying? It's getting real good. There's some IE comics out here that are getting real freaking funny, and uh I'm here for it. And I love seeing these shows pop off, and I love seeing these shows happen. There's some more shows happening in the IE today, and I hope those shows are good too. You know, I'm not on them, so I mean, hopefully they're good. It would be funnier if I was on them, but you know, it's what it is. Um and humble. And humble, yes. No, we we we love to be humble around here.
SPEAKER_01No, it honestly it was so cool. Uh Frank kind of put it together last minute. Yeah. And like you said, you never know what you're gonna get, you never know what to expect. But dude, that was such a great time. Um, I think we showed those people in Menapee last night what you know good comedy is. We had a broad mix of comics, you had some dark twisted, sick dudes like me. You had Josh Baker with his goofy Gen X stuff, you had Frank Martinez's incredible crowd work, uh John Frazier with his you know ethereal smart comedy, Melissa is a killer, Mike James. Oh my god, dude. That was a great show.
SPEAKER_02It was a great show. It was. And for five dollars, for five dollars, okay, on a Thursday night, where are you gonna get entertainment like that for five dollars? I mean, we were throwing the hits. We were throwing the hits, we were trying out some new stuff, and it was just working. And you know, sometimes you can look at an audience and be like, hey, maybe this audience isn't super down for my material, or maybe they don't like me really. But everybody was was hitting in their own way last night, you know. All of us had maybe one joke that they weren't like super keen on, but they were down for most things. Most things they were down for. You agree?
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, no, 100%. And it that that's what I like about Above the Iron and Menefi maybe in general, is it's such a broad mix of people, very diverse. We had white people, we had Hispanic people, we had uh Filipinos, we had black people, we had an entire room full of a good mix of people. And with the you know, shapeshift lineup that Frank put together, it just worked out because there was someone in the audience for every one of us, and all of us kept the laughter going. The energy in the room was incredible. Um, dude, uh like I said, I'm I'm still riding the wave of adrenaline, and I feel like uh you know excited and invigorated about comedy right now.
SPEAKER_02I think you need to tell the dentist about this when he's got instruments in your mouth. Um that's what I think.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'll hand him, I'll hand him one of our AI flyers that you made for us.
SPEAKER_02What? I don't you're funny. Um okay, Ed. So now that you're on here, I mean let's talk about it. So obviously you've been a Carmedy guest before, but I I like our energy together. You're a person that has um voice to me that you're very interested in doing content and and being around the hang and the sort of like ironing, iron sharpening iron, being around comics, like get getting into the scene, like getting more ingrained into the scene more. And so we're starting a pod. We're doing a pod together, like an in-person pod.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, you want to make the announcement now? Yeah, I I Yeah, we're making it, dude. We're doing it. I am diving into the Dave Thompson pool uh headfirst, headlong.
SPEAKER_02That sounds okay. Diving into my pool headfirst does sound that's an interesting way to put it.
SPEAKER_01Hey, can we talk about it a little bit though? Like the the coming out party.
SPEAKER_02Let's talk about the coming out party. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_01Alright, so just because I'm in comedy doesn't mean that I'm autistic. Um it doesn't mean that uh I have to like anime. You got something. Yeah, no, there's definitely something wrong in there, but it, you know, I feel like, I don't know, I don't I can't count cards, and I don't like Judge Wappner, and uh I don't have weird ways to put on my pants or tie my shoes. There's something in there that's wrong, but it's definitely not like full-blown tism. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02No, no, no. It it could be a slight kiss of the tism. Maybe just a little smooch of the tism. Like like there's there's been physical contacts, but maybe it wasn't a full make out.
SPEAKER_01Tism threw a feint and I dodged it. You know what I mean? Like, I don't I don't know. But anyway, either way, I I think I'm a regular dude. I don't like anime, and I I'm not a real huge fan of Disney. Um but apparently there are people on this planet who do, and and I respect that. Uh it's just it's just a little shocking sometimes to meet people who are full-blown adults, who have a wife and a family at home, and have a full-time job, and uh have you know comedy as a hobby, who also maybe in secret wear Mickey Mouse ears in the bedroom.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, okay. I would I would love to talk about this. First of all, I don't know who you're talking about because I don't do comedy as a hobby. Okay, so I don't know who you're talking about. Um look, I I do have a Disney Pass. That's what he's getting at. I have a Disney Pass. We we go to Disney, okay? Look, when my wife and I found out they were putting the cheap Disney passes back on sale last year, we did the one thing that us as poor people do. Okay, we started applying for credit cards, okay? We had to put together every dollar we had, and we and and we looked at that, like if we could get these tickets, we've made it. Okay? Because we we've never been able to just like buy stuff like that. You know what I mean? Because I do DoorDash, but I'm not freaking rolling in it, you know? So to be able to get these passes and take our kids, which we have three young children, by the way, nine, seven, and one. Uh, yeah, it's pretty freaking awesome. And we are big fans of Disney. But no, I do not wear Mickey ears in the bedroom. Okay, I wear them in the living room. It's not the bedroom. I only wear them when I sit outside so my neighbors can see. And no, I don't have Mickey Mouse penis underwear, okay? They're Donald Duck or they're Dumbo because it's got an elephant trunk, okay?
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, what self-described Disney adult. To hear the term Disney adult comes with certain connotations. Would you agree?
SPEAKER_02Yes. No, I I agree wholeheartedly. Now you tell me what you picture when someone says Disney Adult, and then I'll tell you what I think.
SPEAKER_01Uh, Disney, I mean, without like throwing shade, and I mean this in in the most basic points.
SPEAKER_02You say what you want.
SPEAKER_01Everyone's got their fetishes, man. I get it. Everyone's got their uh interests. I'm not gonna sit up on my on my pedestal and pretend like you know, my interests and maybe fetishes aren't weird, also. Yeah, we know you're a feet guy, Ed. Dude, bro, I we took we talked about this, man. Come on. We can't, we can't dude. Alright, moving on. Anyway, uh when I picture a Disney adult, I picture an adult. Yes. A person, a human, um, over the age of, let's say, 25. You know, the prefrontal cortex is fully developed. They know enough about the world, they can vote, they can drink, they can buy, you know, tobacco, they can rent a car. Guns, they can buy weapons. Yes, yes, they can purchase an AR-15, right? Praise God. But these adults also uh are extreme, well, I don't want to say extreme. They're uh they're they're excited about Disney. They like the world of Walt Disney. And they they wear the products and they they spend their hard-earned money and they spend a lot of time and they expel a lot of energy and a lot of calories, and uh and they they enjoy Disneyland more than say the average human. Yes. So um, yeah, and they also have strange tattoos and strange places on their bodies um that may or may not require a trademark.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I don't think you should be talking about my butt cheeks like that. That was I showed you those in confidence, but I will say I I agree. I agree with the definition that you have, and I would like to one up this definition with my own, because I I think there's two types of Disney adults. I think there's Disney adults that have children that have good memories of Disney and happy memories of Disney where maybe their home life wasn't amazing, like mine. And so being able to give my kids opportunities to see these cool things and interact with some of their favorite characters makes me really happy. And yes, once in a while, my wife and I do go by ourselves, and we did honeymoon there because it's a place that we both enjoy. But but the the goal was never to just not have kids and just sit around in Disney and not shower. Because then there's that other side of Disney adults that are like the ones that think that the characters are real, that get into the lore, that open every pin, that spend every dollar and and max out every credit card to be there every single day, that are there at rope drop until the park closes, that live and breathe everything Disney, and that eventually just become fat and end up in one of those electronic wheelchairs, and and then they and then they just die in it, and they die at Disney, and then they they they get cremated and they throw their ashes into the water in front of the park.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, can we talk about the park now? I mean, we we saw each other there on Wednesday. Uh I was bringing my youngest son uh for his very first inaugural trip to Disneyland.
SPEAKER_02It had been like his first trip, yeah.
SPEAKER_01It had been like 15 years, maybe more, since uh we had been to Disney. Oh wow. And uh wow, it's it really, I feel like it's it's changed. It's changed since the last time I was there. Uh, you know, yeah, the overpriced food, the wines, the crowds, the people, that type of stuff. That's all the same.
SPEAKER_02But we'll tell you that the food compared to other theme parks is actually the cheapest compared to every other theme park.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm yeah, it's it's the same, you know, fast food level crap for the price. For sure. Which is fine. I I was happy to take the little guy. He had a blast. I was happy that he had a blast. He got to see everything in the park. Um, but you know, putting nine miles on on the on on the what what I used to call feet. Uh and you know, standing in line and dealing with the heat and dealing with the crowds. I'm looking around. It was cool. It was cool seeing all the little kids run around, have a good time, smiling, laughing, chasing Goofy and stuff like that. Uh, but I feel like about eh maybe maybe 6.30 p.m. Uh-huh, the vibe started to change. And I noticed a difference between the energy in the park from 11 a.m. to say around 6.30. Uh most of the small kids. Most of the small kids start crashing out.
unknownRight?
SPEAKER_01You see a lot of parents pushing kids and strollers who look like they're on fentanyl because they're so wiped out. Um, and then some of the like some of the freakier sites and people started arriving.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Would you agree with that?
SPEAKER_02I would agree because the people that have work or the Disney adults that are the super freaks, they come out at night. You know, they don't come out during the day, they're night walkers, and they they wake up at 3 p.m. and then they get to the park at 6, and then it's like, hey, I'm I'm at Disney until midnight. You know what I mean? And then I'm gonna go home and sell things on the on the dark web. You know how they do it. So yeah, I it I do agree. There is an energy and a vibe change because the kids are freaking tired. My kids were getting tired, and uh, yeah, things switch up at that time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it it was uh it was totally a vibe shift. Um, not necessarily in a bad way. I'm not saying, you know, it was gross or ugly or whatever, but there definitely was a vibe change, and yes, the freaks started coming out. You started seeing more um interesting costumes. Uh I saw a full grown man dressed as Bucky the Beaver. Um wandering the park. He wasn't part of the attraction, but kids, you know, some kids were chasing him around for pictures nonetheless. Um yeah, you see a lot of tails, you see a lot of like headpieces and helmets, and uh, you know, like I said, interesting costume stuff you could probably find on Etsy, you know, uh, or or make yourself. Um, but yeah, interesting, interesting. Um good time overall. I I mastered the art of pulling out my wallet really quick. I got really good at uh un unbuttoning. Yeah, you gotta do that there. You gotta be really good at that. Yeah, I I literally left the button unbuttoned after a while because I'm like, dude, I I'm reaching for this wallet every 38 seconds on average.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh, and they love that too. They love, you know. It's like, you know the feeling when you go to vote and you're you're in the polling booth, and then you exit the polling booth, and technically the people that work there are supposed to be non-partisan. They're not supposed to sway you in one way or another, but you know there's one certain way, depending on where you vote, that they want you to vote. It's kind of like when you vote for the person that they want you to vote for. And they they give you like a look, like like you're you're making this possible. Like you're you're you're changing the world with your purchase today. They look at you like you just did something to help the environment, and you just physically saved a penguin. That's what they look at you like when you buy something at Disneyland. Like you just made the best purchase of your life when you know this crappy plastic toy is gonna break in six hours.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I sent you a text, I think about I don't know, 8 30 at night. Uh something happened to me at Disneyland, and I'm I'm a little bit embarrassed to talk about it, but let's talk about it. Uh I got physically assaulted at Disneyland. Like bad. Yes, you did. Um I was just sitting there minding my own business. And got physically assaulted. I mean, alright, let's let's let's call it spade of speed. I got my ass whooped. Yeah. And I'm I'm ashamed to say it was by a four-year-old uh with one of those automatic bubble blowers. Holy crap, dude.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I haven't had that much soap in my mouth since I said the F-word in kindergarten. Um this this kid pulled the trigger and just pointed it right at my face and let me have it. He gave me a bubble bath that you wouldn't believe, man. Uh I got my ass whooped by a four-year-old with a bubble blower at Disneyland.
SPEAKER_02Okay, now here's the real question, Ed. First of all, what bubble blower was it? Was it Aladdin? Was it Little Mermaid? Was it Mickey? Was it Buzz? What bubble blower was it?
SPEAKER_01I was so traumatized by what happened, I didn't even get a physical description. Of the assailant.
SPEAKER_02Don't tell me that you got assaulted. You're a four-year-old enforcement officer. You got assaulted by a four-year-old. You don't know what this person was wearing. You don't know what the weapon looks like.
SPEAKER_01No. I couldn't tell you whether it was a semi-auto, a full auto, uh it could have been an AK-47, it could have been a uh, you know, 32 Tomcat, black, blue, you know, chrome. I don't know, man. I got my ass whooped by a four-year-old with a bubble blower. I I think I'm gonna file a police report actually. It was that.
SPEAKER_02So you're telling me that a four-year-old blew in your mouth? That's what you're telling me.
SPEAKER_01Oh my dude, you are That is disgusting.
SPEAKER_02And you why was your mouth open around a four-year-old, first of all? And how did this kid get so close? Or are you telling me his weapon was so powerful that it blew 20 feet away straight into your mouth? Tell me how this four-year-old blew in your mouth. And stop being weird about it. You're the one saying he blew bubbles. He blew bubbles. We're not being disgusting. Okay? What happened? How did this four-year-old blow in your mouth?
unknownOh my god.
SPEAKER_02How did you know he was four, you think oh? Also, was it a he?
SPEAKER_01Gosh dang it, man. You're turning you're turning my trauma into more trauma, brother.
SPEAKER_02Okay, look. Look, we had a great time at Disney, okay? I I that didn't happen to me. It did it. I I have my mouth closed around other people's children. But but it was a great, it was a great time, and they loved having you there. Every time you flipped out that wallet and you and you tapped that card, they were there for it, and they love you, Frank. They love you.
SPEAKER_00Did you just call me Frank? Yes, I did call you Frank. You know why? Can I tell you why? Frankly, frankly, we had a good time. What like what are we talking about?
SPEAKER_02Okay, frankly, we had a good time. And look, let me tell you, okay, okay, listen, alright? You and Frank both. Okay, look, I'm gonna explain it. Let me tell you.
SPEAKER_01Don't compare me to Frank, man. Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it. We'll we'll fight after this.
SPEAKER_02We're gonna fight? Well, if you just got your butt kicked by a four-year-old, I like what I'm liking my chances right now. Look, okay, you texted me also, too. You texted me your your the really good ride experience. Tell the people what ride you went on.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. So I yeah, I had my mind blown um in a good way. We did all the basic rides, we did the old school ride, we did the Pirates of the Caribbean, we did the Matter Horns, Indiana Jones, all that stuff. I'd I'd been on that stuff before. Um Disneyland has a new land, well, new to me anyway. Uh like the new Star Wars land.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_01It has like the scale Millennium Falcon, it's got the you know the X-Wing fighters and the speeders. Uh the entire land is designed and built to look like it's a Star Wars set. So you're walking into this land, and you literally feel like you're in a Star Wars movie. You feel like you're gonna see the Mandalorian somewhere. Um we went on a ride, and the line wasn't that bad. It was only like 30 minutes. So we're like, okay, cool, it's a new ride. Uh Star Wars, not not the uh smugglers one, but the other one.
SPEAKER_02It's the Rise of the Resistance.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the resistance one. Yeah. Shout out to the Walt Disney Company. That ride was incredible. Um credible. I've been to Six Flags, I've been to Knott's Bury Farm, I've been to Disneyland. That ride blew my mind. Um great, incredible, immersive, uh, interactive. You you step into uh a Star Wars scene, and you become part of the scene. You get captured as like a uh rebel agent, and then you you're shuffled into escape uh like a what do they call it? A destroyer or death star. I don't know what it is. Dude, from I know him. From start to finish, great. Um trackless roller coaster at the end that it was incredible. I left there, I left, I walked out of that ride and I told my wife I go, I'm gonna apply at Disneyland because I want to wear one of the Imperial outfits, the Hugo Boss looking outfits, and yell at people for a living. It was great, dude.
SPEAKER_02You you would actually be so good at that. I could see you there at Disney just yelling at people. Like you you got the face and the beard and the whole thing going of just like this guy is like a a hardcore imperial or first order like tor torture commander. You know what I'm saying? Like you'll freaking, you'll you'll you'll get people crying in there, dude. And I've seen people get heavy, heavy, like comebacks from from these guys. I mean they like the vicious comments coming from these guys. Like, obviously, not like inappropriate, not like inappropriate at all, but I mean like vicious, like they're mean, you know what I mean? And and it's so funny to see the the cast members get into the acting of the role. It's actually so sick. And and tell me, did you guys like the drop at the end?
SPEAKER_01Oh, dude, yeah, that was that was one of the best parts.
SPEAKER_02Freaking so sick. It was so unexpected the first time I went on it. I saw everything dropping, like the pods dropping, and I'm like, are we about to drop out of this pod?
SPEAKER_01And then it's like, phew, and then I'm like, Yeah, that was that was invigorating. My nine-year-old boy, uh, now mind you, he's uh the Gen Alpha generation. Uh he's he's he has a very short attention span. He's not scared by much, he's a tough kid, uh, pretty grounded, well-rounded. He legitimately looked at me at one point during that ride and he was like, Dad, I'm scared. So I was like, dude, it's fine. You know, why I had cracked a joke, like, don't hate, shh, shh, be quiet, or I'll tell him you're part of the resistance. And then he kind of looked at me with like shaking fear. I'm like, oh no, no, you know, snap out of it's cool, uh, break the portal. This isn't real. But for a nine-year-old boy to for however long, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, a couple minutes, to be so immersed in that world that he was legitimately scared tells you that that they're doing a great job there.
SPEAKER_02No, it was nuts. It was nuts, dude. It was nuts. Okay, tell tell me, remind me, what time are we at right now?
SPEAKER_01Uh we're at 29.25, dude. Let's wrap it up. 2925? Alright. 29.30, 2931. Let's land this plane, dude.
SPEAKER_02Let's freaking land it. And I'm excited about the new pod. It's gonna be out on YouTube. Uh, we're gonna be promoting it. It's gonna be a lot of fun. We're also gonna have guests on. We got three mics ready, set, and go for this pod. We're very excited about it. So please stay tuned, guys. Thank you so much for listening to the Carmody Podcast. Once again, this is episode 18. Everybody, give it up for Ed. Follow him uh on Ed Selwyn Comedy uh Instagram. Anything else you want to plug, Ed?

SPEAKER_02Absolutely, man. Let's do it. All right, love you. Alright, everybody, come on.
