Is Life Coaching Worth It? A Real Client’s INCREDIBLE Before and After (with Lauren Schneider)
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What really happens inside life coaching? Is it worth the investment? And does it truly change things for the better? In today's special episode, my former client Lauren Schneider speaks candidly about the transformation she experienced after working with me 1:1 for a year.
As a busy working mom of two young boys, Lauren thought she just needed help with productivity and time management. What she didn't expect was how deeply childhood experiences, nervous system patterns, people-pleasing, anxiety, body image, and self-worth were shaping every area of her life. You’ll be AMAZED to hear how much changed because she invested in herself through life coaching.
Lauren especially opens up about:
- Why she originally hesitated to invest in coaching
- How coaching differed from the counseling and online courses she’d tried in the past
- How she went from chronic anxiety to successfully coming OFF her anxiety medication, as well as from not running in 14 years to qualifying for the London Marathon!!!
- The nervous system tools that made so much difference she still uses every week
- How making time for herself paid huge “dividends” for her marriage and motherhood
- What her husband, coworkers, and family have had to say about it all
- And MORE!

I've gotten so much more gain out of this than the time and the money that I invested. I really mean it. I think people definitely should use you as a coach. It has really changed my life. Welcome to More Time for Mom, where overwhelmed moms get science-backed strategies to overcome the hidden sources of stress stealing your time and joy. I'm your host, Dr. Amber Curtis. Ready to make more time for you? Let's dive in. If you've ever wondered whether life coaching was worth the investment or worried that it's selfish to spend time and money on yourself, you need to hear today's conversation. I am beyond honored to have my former client Lauren on the show to share her concrete personal experience working with me one-on-one for over a year. When Lauren hired me, she thought she wanted productivity tips and better time management. What she got instead were tools she never expected. Tools she says changed every area of her life. She discovered childhood wounds she didn't realize were still shaping her life. She got off anxiety medication. She went from not running in 14 years to running a marathon. She strengthened her marriage. She became a calmer mom. She gained confidence at work. And she finally felt able to say no without guilt. Today, you're going to hear from her exactly how all that happened. You'll also hear that Lauren almost didn't sign up for one-to-one coaching because, as I'm sure you can relate, she had some hesitations and she wasn't really sure if it would pay off. Now she just laughs and says, whatever you think you're going to get from coaching, you'll get that and a lot more too. Here's her testimonial. Lauren, thank you so much for being willing to share your experience with my podcast listeners. Would you mind starting out with what attracted you to coaching or made you think that maybe having a life coach could be valuable? And again, what did you think you were getting into when we started working together? Sure. So I think I actually got on your email list a couple of years ago from some summit or something that you were in. So I saw an email come out from you and you were talking about you're starting this new podcast and you were sort of talking about your life coaching and I got drawn in by that. And then I sort of thought I was going to come in and we had a couple of sessions before I really had decided to commit for a longer term. And I thought it was going to be more like time management and what to do as a busy mom and how we're going to plan our days and get our scheduling right and be like the most effective mom I could be. I thought it was going to be like, oh yeah, I'm going to really learn how to manage my time better and do make the most of every second that I have. Oh my goodness, that's so much of what every mom wants. And, you know, to that point, do you think that you got some of that? And what kind of surprised you about what you got out of coaching? Or what did we end up kind of working on maybe more than just the practical, tangible time management stuff? Definitely, there was a lot of stuff that we did that we did talk about time management or how to make the most of the time with my kids. So we talked a lot about how it's about the quality time, not the quantity of time and not feeling guilty about the time. So we did definitely talk about that. He also helped me figure out what kind of things could I almost like outsource like meal planning and stuff like that, if we know what types of meals and healthy meals. So definitely, there was some of that. But I think what I really was surprised by is how much more how much more deep it got than that. And it wasn't that was kind of that stuff seems really important. And especially when we started, I had some a baby that wasn't even one yet and a two year old. And so, you know, everything felt so hectic and chaotic. And it just seemed like I have to keep my head above water. But I really turned into a lot more about healing past trauma that I didn't even realize how much it was affecting me. We talked a lot about self-image and body confidence and honestly, just confidence in general. That's one of the main things is like how I feel in making decisions and how I feel about, you know, what's best for me, what's best for my family. I feel like it's really helped a lot. people-pleasing tendencies, and it's just so much more than what I thought it was going to be when I started. It's got a lot, a lot deeper repercussions than just, okay, yeah, I can plan my week better. I can grocery shop more effectively or something like that. COLLEEN O'BRIEN Yeah. I should have asked this at the very beginning, but could you tell us a little bit about yourself and maybe your backstory leading into then any perceived problems that made coaching seem like a solution or seem attractive? Yeah, when we first started I had a baby and a two-year-old and I also am working full-time. I live in Idaho with my husband and we do not have any family here. A lot of times that can feel a little bit overwhelming because you don't have the help. You can't send to grandma and grandpas. for the day or anything like that. And also feeling the mom guilt of having boys in daycare. All that stuff has been, it weighs on you a lot. And I know everybody deals with their own versions of what mom guilt looks like. I know that was one thing that I really struggled with is always trying to be the best for my boys and always being the best version of myself. But a lot of times that turned into just pouring everything, all of my energy into the boys and not really spending the time on myself. And I think that that is something I really have learned a lot is like how much the time investment in yourself, it really does turn out for the whole family. You can really be better, be present for yourself and take that time and still then make the time that you do have that hour a day or whatever, that much better quality time with your family because you're that much more engaged with them. It's so true. And I know a lot of us already know that. We know it's not supposed to be a tradeoff between taking care of yourself and loving your family, but it really feels like tension in your body. So one of the things that you and I and other clients worked on was building more safety in your nervous system around permission to take time for yourself without it feeling so threatening, or even if it felt threatening, still proceeding to make the time and seeing all the great things that came from it. Does that feel true? Absolutely. I mean, that is one of the things. I didn't really know anything about neurotools, and that's one of the things. If someone works with you, they're going to learn so many neurotools and ways to just ground themselves. Especially, this is kind of a funny example, but just a couple of days ago, someone in my family asked me to do something, and I knew I wasn't going to be able to do it. They wanted me to go on this trip, and that's not an option for us right now. And I was like, OK, well, what would Amber tell me to do? And I kind of just took a breath and thought and calm myself down because I knew they might be disappointed by my answer. But it was like, it's OK. This is the right thing for us. And I could I felt more confident sending that text because if they're disappointed, I'm OK and I feel OK with it. That was a silly example, but it just it still keeps coming up all the time. Ways that you can use it. It's not silly at all. We have a real physiological, neurological response in our body to other people's thoughts and emotions. And when we perceive displeasure or disapproval, it can really provoke a stress response in us. Learning to First and foremost, hear your own body and recognize what is right for you, right? What the right decision is for you, regardless of what anybody else thinks. That's major stuff. Then being able to kindly but firmly hold your ground if there's questions or pushback or a reaction on the part of the other party, like that's a big skill that I'm really, really excited you took away. Yeah. How would you describe yourself now? We ended up working together for over a year and I'm so curious what you see as the A to B or Z transformation you achieved in that time. There have been some very big changes and I think probably both mentally and physically I'm at the best spot I've been at probably at least the past 10 years. So for me, it was, there's been a real struggle with, we had a lot of problems getting pregnant and with fertility and pregnancy losses. And so I had developed a lot of anxiety around all that. Through the neuro tools and also just working through some of that past trauma, I was able to completely go off of my anxiety medication. And so that is something that's just like, that's huge. I have to pause you right there and I want to make sure everybody heard that. Not that I am in any way taking credit for it. I just want to celebrate your... feeling comfortable being in a position to handle life without medication that had gotten you through some really tough times in the past and feeling like you had these neuro tools to handle, again, stress or big emotion or hard situations, something that can be beneficial and had a place, but it's just really, really big that you got off your medication during our time together. That's amazing. Absolutely, because that was something it was it was scary about you. You were there with me and we walked through it together. And, you know, if it didn't work, it was OK to go back on. We talked a lot about that. And then it's been over six months now that I've been off on that medication and things are going good. It was a lot of, you know, just fear about the boys. And we talked through a lot of to deal with that fear and how to deal with things came up. So that's just mentally, I'm in a much better headspace. And also just physically, we talked a lot about body image and feeling like my body wasn't doing what it was supposed to be doing because of all that and kind of just coming to acceptance that things work out the way they're supposed to, the way God's plan was now, how beautiful my life is and how it wouldn't have been without that. So it's just like a real acceptance of that. And then we talked about how to make my body healthier and So that, that's like, I decided that running, we talked about different things that we could do for making myself healthier. And I started running. I hadn't run consistently in 14 years since before I got married. And now I have, I ran a marathon. and you were always so encouraging, and this is so funny because the first person after, besides the people that were there cheering me on, the first person I messaged was you to tell you I was so happy I finished. And then now I'm really excited because I signed up to do the London Marathon, which I never thought, if you would have told me that before we started working together, I'd be like, that would be amazing, but that's a dream, that's never gonna happen. And it's just, you know, so many things that, you know, we didn't work together, you weren't there training me physically, but without that help, I don't think I would have been there. And just the encouragement that, It's okay to take this time, the boys will be fine. It's just so much mindset has changed and there's just been a lot of perspective shift on how to prioritize and how to use my time best. I am so excited for you. You're running the London Marathon and you already ran, I forget how many half marathons, but a full marathon. And the change I have noticed in how you feel about your body and then how that helps you show up in your daily life is just so contagious. It's so beautiful. Well, thanks. Yeah, it's not what I thought I was getting into for life coaching. It's so much better. What did our sessions feel like as we went through them? What, if anything, surprised you about the sessions? Or how did you come into them versus come away from each one feeling? Tell us a little bit more. Yeah, so typically we would meet every week or two and we would come in and he would ask me how the week was going and I would usually just tell you a little bit about the week and then we would either go from something like that. So if something was really bothering me that week, if there was an issue that sort of felt like it needed more attention. Even if it was just, I know we talked a lot about sleep. That was one of the things like, man, I'm so tired. So we would talk about if something was going on with that, because my boys are not good sleepers. So that was something we definitely had to deal with a lot. And then if there wasn't something really pressing, if I was like, oh, it's just kind of a normal week, nothing really too crazy going on, then you would either have a list of things that we had talked about in the past, and you would go back and say, OK, let's go back to this. Or you always had in mind some neuro tools. I always felt like we had something to talk about. That was something I wasn't sure going in. Is this going to be awkward? Am I going to know what to say? I was kind of nervous because I didn't know what to expect either. But you always had something to talk about or it would just really easily flow. I always liked it because you're very easy to talk to. It's kind of like talking to a friend who always has really good advice. I know you're more than a friend, obviously, but, you know, you always, you're a very good listener. I always felt really comfortable talking and I felt like we could get into pretty deep topics pretty quickly, even before I had really known you that long. We would usually meet for, I think we were meeting for about 45 minutes. And so it always worked really great for me. The only thing, and it would be, you know, kind of in the middle of a workday. So sometimes we'd come in and I would, you know, we would start talking and then I'd be at the end, I'd be, we would go through heavy stuff and I would always feel a lot lighter after, but I might be a little emotional. So I had to give myself a few minutes so far. I went back to work because I always. Even if I came into the week and it was a bad week, I definitely always felt lighter and more at peace when we were done. I felt like I had the tools to handle it. Or even if I just kind of got things off my chest, I really felt like I was in a better headspace always, every time after we met. Amazing. My goal is definitely for me to be the one that's doing the work, not the client, right? I want to be the safe space where you can come and pour your heart out and share things that maybe you're not able to bring to anyone else or Again, not feel pressure to bring anything at all. This coaching relationship is not about assignments and homework and, you know, any expectation of you. It's me wanting to take off of your plate, off of your shoulders, the stress and the weight of whatever has been holding you down in life this far. I love that. Also, I did really like that you always sent us the recap after, and you always sent out some things to think about and some things, just some takeaways, so that way you can be really fully present. When I'm in the session, I don't have to worry about taking notes. I really love that you always send the replay, and you always said, okay, here's kind of the main things, and here's some things maybe to work on for the week. So that was another thing I really liked. Yeah, I do that because I know how much I like to just like have things in safekeeping for future reference if ever needed. And that way, you've got like this whole encyclopedia of personal wisdom, right? Knowledge about you and your unique nervous system and your life that you can refer back to any time. So there was hopefully no pressure in any particular moment that I've got to take this in and remember this moving forward. That's all safely stored away for you. I'm glad that that worked and you liked it. Yeah. Yeah. Working with a coach can feel like a very significant investment. It is a significant investment. And not just in terms of any financial cost, but the time and the vulnerability and other things. So would you say that this investment was worth it? And if so, in what ways? Friendly reminder, there's no pressure to say it's worth it. And I just am so curious for your honest opinion. Spending that time and money on yourself is a lot. And I'm curious how it went for you. Yeah, I mean, I definitely think it was worth the time and investment and money and all of that because it is kind of one of those things. I know I felt, I'm sure a lot of other moms out there and women in general feel too, is just that it's almost selfish to take the time for yourself. But I really and truly look back at before I started working with you and I feel like just I really am a better version of myself and that's so much better for my whole family. That's even something that other people who are not in my family, I've told them about it because I've said, hey, here's some things that I've learned. Here's some things I'm working on about myself. And just in general, like at work, someone has commented on my confidence and how they feel like I'm really speaking up for myself more at work and feelings more open about sharing my mind. So I think it's. you do really start with just thinking, okay, well, I can maybe learn some tips and tricks. And I think that might have even been in my first email, like, I want some tips and tricks for these certain things. But it's so much more than that. And it's, yes, you are taking time and money that belongs to your whole family, but you really are giving all of them that investment back. If you can be the best version of yourself, or even just a better version of work in progress version, then that's going to be so much better for your kids. And I really feel like even when my kids are getting really upset, they then when they're fighting meltdown it doesn't stress me out like it used to of course you don't want your kids to cry but i don't feel the need to tell them oh you need to calm down or whatever i just like for example the other night my son was really upset i just started patting his back and singing him a song and he let him cry for as long as he wanted and you know he just calmed himself down i didn't make him feel pressure to stop crying he just was really tired he just was crying because he's tired and it's like That kind of thing is one of the things before where I felt like I would be getting really triggered that I'm not doing something right. Why is he crying? And now it's so much more that I've learned about the nervous system that I really do feel like I can be that much more supportive for my kids and teach them how to sort of calm themselves down. Yes. Yes. Were there any fears that you had going into coaching, whether that was fear about the cost or fear about divulging any parts of the past or even just any personal concerns, hesitations that you had to work through to invest in the coaching, invest in yourself? Sure. I mean, it is expensive. So you kind of feel like, oh, this money could be going towards something else. But after I really I did, I think I paid for the first six months and it was like for the second six months that I was very easily able to go back and look and say, look at all these things that have improved. And it wasn't even really that much of a discussion with my husband. It was sure we need to figure out. Like all the logistics for how we're going to make it work, but it wasn't should we or shouldn't we he was 100% on board. Yes, this is great. This is this is good for all of us. We should definitely continue to do it. So I think that that was a bit of a fear and then Kind of like I said before, but what are you going to talk about? Is there really enough and when you're looking at okay, you have at the time, I think you were doing 18 sessions. So 18 sessions out seems like a lot of time. Do I have that many problems? I feel pretty good. And then you start going, you're like, Oh, my goodness, we have so much more to talk about. So it was kind of, would there be enough to fill the time, but I looked at it, like I've been in counseling before in the past. And it was kind of like counseling as in talking to you, because I know you're not a counselor, but I could tell you all these things in the past. And I really do feel like we did a lot of good work with healing some past traumatic things that had happened and not really scary, bad trauma, but things that were still lingering and still causing issues. I feel like by being open, even though that's always scary to be open and share things, I never felt like you were judgmental. So I felt like we were really, really able to heal those things. Wow, amazing. You brought up your husband. I'm curious what his perception of all this was or how coaching has maybe changed your relationship or his perception of you or just how did coaching give you tools for closer connection with the people in your life like your husband? I think one thing that's kind of more surface level before I talk about a little bit of the deeper stuff is that we had talked about having dates and prioritizing dates. That was one of the things that I know after you suggested it, it was like, OK, we're going to make time. I'm going to plan everything so we can have a babysitter and we can have this date planned. He still talks about that. There was like one special date we did and he's still talking about it. And that was last October. So he's still like, that was so cool. I can't wait to do that again this year. And so stuff like that is, yes, prioritizing time and not only focusing on the boys, but then on a deeper level, he's talked a little bit about how he feels like if something comes up, I can handle them a lot more calm. I don't let it get to me as easily. And I think even with being decisive, I know at times I was very indecisive, so I feel a lot more confident in the decisions I make. But he really just has mentioned that if something comes up, I can just handle it a lot more calmly and not like everything was sending me on a spiral, but it doesn't get me to the same like emotionally heightened state nearly as quickly, or I can just stay calm when something comes up unexpected. He also mentioned if we're traveling, you know, traveling with little kids is always stressful. We do a lot of traveling because all of our family is back in the South. He said he just feels like I handle myself so much better when we're in those stressful situations around family. I've had a huge thing with all of our family. He's like, man, you just handled it so much better than you had in the past with not worrying about everybody else just being calm. That's huge. I love doing this work for ourselves, but it is absolutely icing on the cake when other people notice or validate the changes that we notice ourselves or that we feel ourselves. And when that brings you two closer together, that's a really beautiful thing to see. If you had to pick just one of the many tools and concepts we covered that you think was most transformative, what might that be? There's a lot of things that were really helpful, but I really think that one of the most important things is just that it's okay to take time for yourself. Taking time for yourself, it really rejuvenates you and restores you to where you can be more present, whereas if you're spending exactly the same amount of time only with your kids, only pouring into your kids, for example, going to feel more burned out and you're not going to be able to enjoy that time as much. I really feel like by me taking one hour a day to run, it's made it that as soon as I get done, I can't wait to go. If my kids, usually my husband will go pick up the boys and then when I'm done running, I go upstairs and then I can spend the time with them. And it's just, it makes me more grateful for the time with them. It's really good for me mentally and physically. So it's okay to spend time on yourself, even if it's not that, even if it's reading or even if it's another hobby, it's okay because you feel better and then you can really enjoy the time and not be resentful of, oh someone else, like my husband is getting to do this, why can't I? It's so good because I felt like at first I can't do that, that's selfish, but it's really not. It really is better for everyone. You can spend the time to do something that brings you joy. Yes, yes. I love it. We talked through so much around that because That's a perfect example of something that sounds really simple and intuitive to our brain, but again, our body gets so stressed out when we try to put it into practice. And so there was a lot that we got to do to help make it not just possible, but feel good in the process. Love it. Lauren, what would you say to a woman who is considering coaching but has some hesitations? Or if you could go back and kind of talk to your former self, maybe a week before we started coaching together, what would you say to her? What would you encourage her? You know, I just tell her that there's really nothing to lose. I've gotten so much more gain out of this than the time and the money that I invested. I really feel like, yes, you're going to spend the time regardless. If you take the time and you're doing, even if you're pouring all of yourself out to your family or to your job or to whatever, you're still going to spend the time. So if you just cut out that little bit of time for yourself, you're going to see way more dividends that you put in. And the same with the money. Yes, you're investing into this, but your dividends are going to be way more than what you put in. I think there's really nothing to lose, that Amber is really great to work with. I really, really enjoy working with her. And so even if it's just someone to talk to and vent, if you're having a bad week, then that's valuable too, because if you have friends, they don't only want Harry Bent. She's here to listen to you. And I guess for myself, I would have told myself, Hey, you really need to be open and honest, and you're going to get so much more back. Don't hold anything back, just go in and talk about whatever's bothering you and talk about all this history that might not seem important at the time and you're gonna kind of unravel a lot of things that it was still holding onto. And I just feel like it's gonna change your life. It's gonna change your life for the better. If you really take the time, it's gonna make a huge difference in your life. You mentioned counseling as something you had done in the past. What, if any other things, had you tried to help yourself feel better or address different problems? How was coaching different or did coaching solve things that those past attempts were not able to really resolve for you? Yeah, I think counseling. So I've tried that in the past a while ago. And in my opinion, my experience, it was like, you get through the really hard, heavy stuff, and that's kind of it. And so I think this was kind of different, because yes, we certainly talked about that stuff. But also, there were times where it's like, let's learn something that's gonna, a tool that we can use that next time something happens. For me, it was more preparing for how to do it next time, just like we had talked about something that's like, if you're at a red light, and you're feeling anxious that day, that's something you can do. So I've done that and then as far as like time management and stuff, I don't know how many classes I had bought online. You know, you get in all these different things where it's like, buy this and it's going to teach you how to organize, buy this and it's going to teach you how to meal plan. And it's like, those things are good and those things are valuable, but I think you can get a little bit overwhelmed. And so one of the things with working with you, it's like we could specifically talk about what's bothering you, how can we address it? How can I do that for myself? You sort of were giving me more of the tools for how can I solve those problems on my own, or like you said, automate things. So I think it's a lot more personalized to what you actually need. And because we're talking through it from a little bit of a different perspective in the counseling, like we talked a lot about our faith and how that plays into it. I really appreciated that. And I felt like this was the most effective thing that had worked for me. That is amazing. Is there anything that we haven't yet covered that you want people to know or you think would be useful for them if they are considering working with a coach one-on-one? It's probably just repeating myself a little bit, but it's definitely going to help you to work with a coach one-on-one. And if there's something that's really bothering you, That's a great thing to work on, but I guarantee you're going to find something that you didn't think was bothering you. And then if you go back far enough, it's probably been weighing on you for a while and you can work through those things. There's definitely stuff I did not realize what an impact it was still having on my life, stuff from even when I was a child. And it's just, I feel so much lighter and more free because we've gotten rid of a lot of those issues. And it's really helped me mend a lot of relationships too. So I think that whatever you think you're going to get from it, you probably will, but you're probably going to get a lot more too. I love that. I love that so much. I love that getting to cultivate this kind of one-on-one relationship really gives us time and space to get to know your unique needs, your unique dreams and desires, your past nervous system patterning. I always talk about how every nervous system is unique, and it's wonderful to learn maybe overarching tools or concepts, but I love to help customize them to each of my clients and then take it, you know, in the direction and at the speed that each individual person needs. You have been just so amazing and I'm really, really grateful for your willingness to come on. You've had so many wins and I love that you're open to sharing them with others. Thank you so much. Yeah, of course. I really mean it. I think people definitely should use you as a coach. It has really changed my life. Thank you. I'm so honored. It is my joy to support you, to support all of my clients. And I, I just do feel that this is what God has called me to do. So when that feels received and reciprocated, nothing is more wonderful.
