Ep. 5 From Montana to South Dakota: Planning a Cross-Country Deer Hunt
The call of new hunting grounds beckons as we share our exciting news - we've both drawn South Dakota archery deer tags for this fall! This marks our first major out-of-state hunt together and presents a fascinating challenge as we shift from Montana's abundant public lands to South Dakota's predominantly private hunting landscape.
For two public land hunters accustomed to the mountains and vast wilderness areas of Montana, the Midwest presents a completely different hunting experience - one where permission and access become just as crucial as hunting skill. We dive deep into our preliminary planning, discussing everything from scouting strategies and timing considerations to the specific challenges we'll face when hunting unfamiliar territory.
What makes South Dakota particularly intriguing is the unique intersection of Western big game hunting traditions applied to a Midwestern landscape. The possibility of encountering both whitetails and mule deer, sometimes even hybrid deer, adds another layer of excitement to this adventure. We break down realistic trophy expectations for different units, our preferred timeframe (October, between elk and rifle deer seasons), and the tactical adjustments needed when transitioning between these different hunting worlds.
Beyond our South Dakota plans, we share our complete season strategy - balancing multiple tags across states while prioritizing our Montana elk and deer opportunities. We also discuss our evolving content plans, including new gear reviews, cooking segments, and hunting tutorials that we're developing to provide more value to our growing audience.
Whether you're planning your own cross-state hunting adventure or simply enjoy the strategic planning that goes into a successful hunt, this episode offers both practical insights and the unmistakable excitement that comes with new hunting opportunities. Follow along as we prepare for this journey and consider joining us by sharing your own South Dakota hunting experiences or connecting through our website at huntswiftlypodcast.com.
it doesn't work when you're reaching over. I know I'm trying to exist, but yeah yeah, that was like the first foray into youtube. For me was like the travel thing, like travel culinary experience.
Speaker 2:Exactly that was that's.
Speaker 1:That's a life of that I mean, I went to the philippines, I went to singapore, I went to indonesia, went to japan, I want to go to japan I want to go to hong kong.
Speaker 2:I would love to go to hong. I want to go explore asia. I've been to europe a few times and they're like I'm excited for the culinary experience I'm about to have in Italy this summer, very excited for that. But Asia, I want to go to Vietnam and Laos. I want to go try those local noodle shops, go to Malaysia. So, as someone that is part Japanese.
Speaker 1:You're part Japanese. I took a DNA test. It was like 73% Northern Italian and then like a little bit Spanish and then like 20%.
Speaker 2:Japanese. Wow, yeah, I took a DNA test. I am 50% Scandinavian, obvious Yep, I think, anyway. And then I'm like 45 russian and five percent israeli, because my family were all russian jews.
Speaker 2:Yeah, but I would say the scandinavian is probably like the predominant yeah personally, like when I like obviously I'm not as tall as those motherfuckers, because when I go to scandinavia I'm a fucking short king, yeah, but like, structurally, the way I'm built is very Scandinavian. Do you know what part of Scandinavia I think it's mostly Norwegian Interesting Mostly Norwegian, with a little Swedish and a little Danish.
Speaker 1:I know there's no Finnish. I was going to say because the Russian part could be Finnish too.
Speaker 2:The Russian is my dad, the Scandinavian is my mom Interesting, there's English in there and Canadian. But my mom's side of the family is related to the pilgrims correctly. The cabin boy that fell off the Mayflower on landing is my ancestor. What the fuck Like direct ancestor, that's crazy. So my family has technically been in the United States since the Mayflower, so they weren't the first, like they weren't like Jamestown or whatever, but they were like Puritans, like pilgrims Damn, that's kind of crazy. However, according to the family history, he had like 16 wives. So there's a lot of people. There's a lot of people related to him, but like it's, so it's direct enough where, like when my grandfather went to dartmouth, it was like he could claim pilgrim, like he was a part of the pilgrims. That's pretty sick. So yeah, because my family is mostly like, my mom's side of family is like mostly like east coast, like dartmouth, like sure, on island kind of area, west dartmouth, like north, like massachusetts and new Massachusetts and New England, sure, but like my dad's side's like.
Speaker 2:My grandpa was the lawyer Very Jewish Lawyer for the Phillies and Eagles in the 70s. That's cool, dude. I'm 99% sure he's Canadian. 99% sure, because that's like South Philly in the 70s. That's like all Jewish and Italian law. Yeah, south Philly, honestly, south Philly is one of my favorite parts of the city. I love Philadelphia in general. Philadelphia is, I think, so shit on by most of the East Coast.
Speaker 1:It's not a business center. No, boston, new York, dc is the capital.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I really enjoyed Philly With the culinary experience I had in Philly, the mixture of the Jewish jellies and the Italian eateries, the vetries. Have you ever, I'm assuming you've had Wawa?
Speaker 1:I've been to a Wawa. I love Wawa.
Speaker 2:When I went I had this place called Mara's Pizza, deep South Philly, old school Italian. My dad used to go, I think, there when he was a kid and then and the old lady that would make mera's pizza would make these massive portions of this like italian cuisine and he would sit around my dad and his group of friends. If they didn't finish every single bite they would smack him yes, a little jewish kid because the jews and the italians.
Speaker 2:Italians love each other like if you've ever seen the Speranos. That's like a real thing. Italians love the Jew, that one Jew in their little crew. Jews love Italians, if you're, if you're Italian.
Speaker 1:I was going to say. I think it's because they've both been relatively persecuted in this country as well yeah, they don't they.
Speaker 2:My dad, well, it was the jews and italians would fight the irish. Yeah, the irish. My dad, like was telling stories about how you I got like mugged by a bunch of irish kids with like a bike lock. Nice, hell yeah, like that's so filling, it's so, it's so. My dad's like california now, like he's very like california too I've talked to you about he's very laid back, very laid back california. When I go, when we went to philly, it is like turns into. He goes from like philly, can I get some water to? Can I get some water? Ah, where's my anges at nice, like full on, like full, because he grew up center city. He grew up literally like a block away from the liberty well, no shit, center city, up center city. He grew up literally like a block away from the Liberty Bell no shit, center city, dead, center city. Nice, franklin Courts, very nice, I love Philly, that's a great city.
Speaker 2:I'm not a huge city guy. When I went to Boston it was really cool culturally, the food was great, but I got really overwhelmed In Philly. I don't get overwhelmed. New York fucking. Yeah, new York's a lot. New York is Dude, just trying to figure out the fucking subways Like send.
Speaker 1:I like New York. I've spent a significant amount of time in New York, mostly because my freshman year of college was spent in Connecticut. I spent a lot of time in New York. I like New York. I like New York. It's fucking cool.
Speaker 2:Yeah, new York was one of those cities where I would go back to, but at the same time I like Boston more Boston's fucking awesome. Boston's a great city. Yeah, Like walking around Boston for spring break was an amazing experience. The seafood is on beat.
Speaker 1:I like DC a lot.
Speaker 2:I've never been to DC. I've lived in DC for a little while. One place I do want to go back to when I was a little kid was North Carolina, nice. That's awesome.
Speaker 1:Is that where the Outer Banks is? I've been to the Outer Banks. I chaperoned my little cousin's senior week, which was probably eight years ago, jesus, so I was in my mid-20s Hell, yeah. So they were down there for eight days, eight or nine days, and then each parent that was in the group took like two days. But my aunt and I went down and chaperoned yeah, that's fun.
Speaker 2:I really love traveling around the US, for sure. But the call to go to New Zealand for me right now.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we were talking about that the other day.
Speaker 2:Oh my god, I literally If someone offered me a lodging spot where I could work on a hunting outfitter.
Speaker 1:Our shout out to anyone in New Zealand If you need a young gentleman to come work on your hunting ranches, I would literally do anything, a guide or whatever you need.
Speaker 2:I don't think I'm qualified Packer Packing scanning.
Speaker 1:This is your guy. Hit him up. I would straight up drop out of college. Quinton at huntswwithleypodcastcom, do you?
Speaker 2:give your calls. If I had to pick a dream life outside of being like poor Dane, I would say it's the Remy Warren. Yeah, remy lives a pretty fucking sick life Six months in New Zealand, six months in the States based around hunting that would be insane. Oh yeah, that would be insane. Oh yeah, that was not given. That's hard work.
Speaker 1:But that yeah, the six-month off, plus the fact that you can just buy a suppressor, like everywhere.
Speaker 2:After listening to the GoHunt podcast on it, I want those Like dude. I would want to do the helicopter drop off, not the helicopter um.
Speaker 1:I had a in 2020. I had a full hunt book like tarag the whole thing. Yeah, the SEI Southern Hemisphere big, big five.
Speaker 2:Full hunt book Fallow. What is it Fallow, red stag chamois tar. There's one other one, roe deer.
Speaker 1:No, not real. Is it Paxos? I think it's Paxos. It's not a museum. Yeah, there's no Paxos, I think so. It's not pig, no, it's another one of those like high out I can't remember Shantar, I don't know, but yeah, full trip booked for 2020. And well, we all know what happened then. That shit got canned real quick and I never actually went back and rescheduled.
Speaker 2:Tar, sika, sika, deer or sambar. There's also elk. That would be a sick hunt. Elk hunting in New Zealand, elk hunting in New Zealand, but I don't know. Either one of those lives would be good. I mean, I'm pretty bummed that Hordane isn't around. I will watch no Reservations for hours on end. I would say no Reservations. River Monsters and what's the last one? I think it's like Gold Rush or the three cable TV shows I still watch Interesting River Monsters. River Monsters is cool. You can't beat Jeremy Wade.
Speaker 1:You can't beat Jeremy Wade. You can't beat Jeremy Wade.
Speaker 2:They had to end the show because he caught everything. That's insane.
Speaker 1:Jeremy Wade is an interesting individual. Yeah, no, anthony Bourdain was Him and Robin Williams were the two celebrity deaths that really fucked me up.
Speaker 2:Yeah, robin Williams was a big one for me. Yeah, no, my entire career one for me yeah, no.
Speaker 1:My entire career was because of Anthony Bourdain. For those of you who don't know, I worked in kitchen as a sous chef for 10 years.
Speaker 2:When he died, in 2016, I was 13 and I still was bummed out.
Speaker 1:I was in culinary school At the Culinary Institute of America where he went. What was the reaction? Like? Oh, it was really fucking somber. We had like a memorial service for him.
Speaker 2:Yeah, dude, I judge people like if how they were as an actual person, if people genuinely still talk about him. And I watched this episode of Rogan where I forget who the DJ you know who I'm talking about. Or the guy who did the graffiti art for Facebook oh yeah, I know who you're talking about. When he was talking about boarding, he just started breaking down crying and I was like you have to be a level of good individual to elicit that reaction. That is a genuine reaction. Tony was like one of the greats dude. It's like for me in travel, like I think about like him. Like when I went to norway this past summer I had really wanted to like just, you know, like not really try it, like I'm a little freaked out before, but I watched the episode no, no Reservations on the plane and I, straight up, just was like we're trying everything, we're going. The inspiration I got was legitimate.
Speaker 1:He's a resentful whale. So, anthony, this is going to tell you a lot about who I am as a person. There are two people that got me to just eat food and not worry about what it is and just go places and try food. One is Anthony Bourdain Can't put the sense on the fucking bottom. The other was a butler at the United States Embassy in Luxembourg Huh, where one of my family members was the ambassador from the United States to Luxembourg and myself and my mom would go visit my aunt and uncle my aunt and uncle and we'd go over there and they had a learning Christian Christian.
Speaker 1:Somehow I find this I love you, man, you're an awesome dude and he would essentially like, when they'd be having like a party or something for like diplomats from whatever country, there'd be food in the kitchen. It's me and my little cousin beyond the kitchen, because we want to go to the party and we'd like want to try stuff. And I saw something and I was like what is that? I asked him like what is it? And he's like just eat it. And I don't know if you like it, I'll tell you. And someone tried it it's a crab cake. I fucking loved it. Wouldn't have eaten it. If he had told me what it was Would not have eaten it, and ever since then I've just been like you know what. I'm going to try that before I ask what it is, if I like it, then I want to know.
Speaker 2:I have a similar not experience, but similar kind of like thing where. So this Bourdain was like later in life. Yeah, bourdain was like later in life, but as a kid I was like an incredibly picky eater, very picky. I'm still trying to break that habit. There's some things I won't eat. I don't like green shit in my pasta. I don't like white white like cottage cheese, eggs, cottage cheese is disgusting if you eat cottage cheese.
Speaker 2:I just started eating um cream cheese only with jalapeno poppers, okay, but um, that's crazy. I know I had like bagels with like butter and bake. That's not bad, yeah, but um, I uh had this guy I call him my Uncle William. He's my best friend's dad. He'll do something similar. He's just like, like, for example, we went to the Sriracha restaurant. I'm like he's like, try this. I'm like, what is this? He's like try it. I'm like, is there this? Is there eggs in this? Because I didn't eat Sorry to eat eggs I'll take.
Speaker 2:Damn damn, my dad hates eggs like will refuses to eat them, just because he did an embryo lab when he was in school and he had to work with chicken embryos and he's like I'm never touching one of these fucking things again. Um, but he just like would feed me these things. He's like, oh that, right there, that was like fried rice, like something basic, but like just like to try it. And like this past weekend I went to dinner with him in colorado and he's like we're getting this and this and I tried one. I'm like, okay, this is obviously just really good steak whatever. And they the second one. He just handed it to me on this like crunchy piece of bread and I hands it to me and I'm like, fuck it, I'll just take a bite. I'm like that's amazing. What is that? He's like that is a bone marrow and beef tartar. Hell yeah. And I'm like I would have never eaten this if I knew what this was. Is it the bone marrow? Bone marrow butter it was like literally in the bone.
Speaker 2:The bone was carved in half. It's a tartar lining the strip of the bone. It's like the egg and like oh hi. Welcome to the podcast.
Speaker 1:There's Boney, everybody, he's normal.
Speaker 2:You're a big puppy. Oh, let me talk about tartar.
Speaker 1:Come here, Bones.
Speaker 2:But so it was like tartar infused Like hot tartar, hot tartar infused with bone butter, bear mare or bone marrow butter, and it was fucking fantastic. I'm not a huge start. I've had it one other time and I was like it's.
Speaker 1:You know, it's nothing crazy, yeah, but after this I'm like this is like bone marrow is one of the best things in life. Yeah, I can agree. The last restaurant I worked at the one that shut down because of COVID we did a bone marrow dish. It was and we put it. Take bone marrow sous vide, it like, start the cooking process with garlic and all this good shit, and we take it out and we put it under the salamander, put it in the broiler, essentially put like a really, really hot one, and just boil the shit out of it so that top layer of fat starts to kind of like almost like Maillard reaction.
Speaker 1:Okay, and then throw that on a plate with a couple pieces of bread Fantastic.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and then throw that on a plate with a couple pieces of bread. Fantastic, yeah, best thing ever, I will say. I'm far more adventurous when eating foods inside. I would say the Asian culture and Middle Eastern. I got something for you?
Speaker 1:You ever been to Nato?
Speaker 2:No, don't look it up won't, I'm gonna get some what okay hold on.
Speaker 1:Do you like beans?
Speaker 2:yeah, okay like I don't know. I'm not very adventurous like mexican food or like american food. You've had menudo.
Speaker 1:Sounds so familiar most mexican places have it, but if you knew what it was, you wouldn't be oh the organs, yeah, yeah, soup, yeah, I've had, I've tried some, but best hangover.
Speaker 2:My favorite is, like my favorite growing up was lengua. Okay, I, I love a good lengua picky eater that likes lengua. Well, mexican food was never like a picky like I. I won't eat an avocado. I will not eat an avocado, but with meat I am so much more like I'll eat fucking any meat you put in front of me. Interesting, I've eaten like alligator. I've eaten rattlesnake. I've eaten um, trying to think I've eaten lion, not mountain lion and zoo lion. It's a zoo lion. Yep.
Speaker 1:My dad found a website that you could buy old like meat from exotic animals off of when they're dead after the zoo I've had.
Speaker 2:They're dead after the zoo, but I, I would eat any meat put in front of me without a question, but it's like. It's like avocado. I can't eat avocado cream cheese. I'm starting to eat cream cheese. What is it about avocado?
Speaker 1:I think it's like avocado I can't eat avocado cream cheese.
Speaker 2:I'm starting to eat cream cheese. What is it about avocados? I think it's the texture, but the like mushy, like mushy texture, like guacamole. No, um, bananas I will. I will throw up if I eat a banana. Like that texture, that smell, that taste, fair enough. Um, I don't eat fruit. I've told you this. You don't eat fruit. I the only fruit I'm starting to invent, like being more adventurous with fruit, like, obviously, like when I went to fiji, I ate like mango. It's the best, it's pretty good, but like I'm starting to eat berries more okay, I'm trying.
Speaker 1:What if you you blend it into a smoothie? I don't like fruit.
Speaker 2:I don't like. Is it a taste thing? It's a taste. I mean, I'm trying to break that habit, but it's I got you. I don't like fruit pastries, okay so it's a flavor thing.
Speaker 2:Yeah, with fruit in general, it's a flavor thing. Yeah, with fruit in in general, it's a flavor thing. I just like, if I want a pastry, I want like a savory chocolate or like a sweet, like a sweet cinnamon, like if I had a choice, sure, but I don't know. I'm trying to. I'm starting to get a little bit more outside of my realm of comfort when it comes to food, okay, and I think hunting is a little help with that. Yeah, yeah, of course, because I'm like, especially with meat. I'm like, bro, I'm eating an elk. I was fucking shoulder deep in. I think I can eat this piece of tartare. Yeah, I've taken bites out of raw deer hearts before I was going to say heart, you're good with heart.
Speaker 2:Oh, I love heart. I've eaten liver.
Speaker 1:I? I was going to say heart. Are you good with heart? Oh, I love heart. I've eaten liver. I'm not a huge fan of it, so I'm going to try and wrap this up into a. Have you ever had liver mousse? No, okay, I might have to. If we start doing the cooking portion of this show or on the YouTube channel, I'm going to make some liver mousse. Okay, you can't tell a fuck liver.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I just the liver I've had. I've honestly only ever had deer and elk liver. Okay, I've never. I've never had like other livers and like same thing with like gizzards. I've only had like a duck gizzard. I don't like gizzards, okay buddy.
Speaker 2:You're a, I don't like gizzards. Okay, buddy, I'm sorry, buddy, you're going to shit right there. I will say it does seem like there is. I kind of like talking like podcasts in general, going forward. If we could start like a culinary and a fucking fitness side of this, I would be stoked because that's like the three things in my life that I love. Like I love cooking, I love cooking videos. Because that's the three things in my life that I love. I love cooking, I love cooking videos. I'm a terrible chef. I can cook meat, but I can't really do a good meal.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we can do that. Obviously, you guys can tell which person is going to be doing which part.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I'll probably be covering the fitness and Swift would be covering the food.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we can do that. Yeah, so that's coming soon. There's going to be, if you guys. Okay, hi guys, welcome to the Hunt Swiftly podcast. We're only like we're only almost a half an hour into the show, but let's hit the official intro. Thank you guys for being here. We appreciate it. Also, if you go to huntswithleapodcastcom, we have a whole ass merch store now that is available to you guys. If you use code podcast, you'll get 10% off of everything on the store and we're going to be adding a bunch of stuff. There's going to be a bunch of really cool stuff. Some of it you'll get, you know, maybe a little handwritten note, some extra swag, something like that we'll see. And if we see you in public, yeah, and if you, if you happen to come up to us wearing um said stuff you might get some, uh some cool shit in return.
Speaker 2:And then another mention mention we are doing a 1,000 Instagram follower giveaway. Listen back on our previous housekeeping video Kind of more details on that, but essentially it's going to be about $3,000 worth of gear for 1,000 followers on Instagram. There's opportunities for two three-time entries, for two three-time entries, and that will be announced probably within a week or two afterwards, of when we hit a thousand followers. Yep, completely random.
Speaker 1:Um well, we're taking out air selves yeah, so if anyone that has been on this podcast is not eligible, sorry, sorry brad, but probably true, andrew. Maybe hunter probably won't be on in time. Maybe we'll see, but we'll see. But yeah, so we're gonna give a bunch of really cool stuff away to a follower, not a friend to a follower. It's gonna be completely random. The drawing is gonna be legit. We going to do it with a service.
Speaker 2:I'm going to eat my shorts.
Speaker 1:But, yeah, go check out the previous podcast. There's also going to be something on our Instagram account, the at the Hunt Swiftly podcast.
Speaker 2:I'll put that we will also be posting this on YouTube Shorts as well as apps.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so you guys can check that out and there's ways to get a bunch of, you know, 3x times entries.
Speaker 2:Get your name in the hat three times. It takes probably 10 minutes of your time, yeah.
Speaker 1:And you guys get a bunch of really cool stuff, hopefully in time for hunting season.
Speaker 2:Yep, if you guys start posting and getting us more aware and we hit that goal, someone will be walking away with a basically full setup by this ball.
Speaker 1:And just to put this out there, this is not a one-time thing. We've already talked about some additional giveaways in the future, maybe some hunts that we can give away.
Speaker 1:I don't know about you guys, but we're not going to say anything yet, but there's some stuff, but we're not gonna say anything yet, but there's. There's some stuff that that we're planning on on doing and we're gonna be taking you guys on a hunt, potentially, and then some other smaller ones. Um, yeah, maybe a day attack. Yeah, you can come shoot tack with us, yeah, um, so yeah, there's some really cool stuff coming down the pipe, um, and I hope you guys are are, you know, subscribed to the podcast, following us wherever you listen.
Speaker 2:Um, anyways, this was a really long, unnecessary intro but anyway, let's get into the meat of this episode, the meat on a previous episode we mentioned. We both, cool, hold a tag. If you follow us on Instagram, you already know where. Yeah, the Hunt Swiftly podcast is hitting South Dakota.
Speaker 1:Baby, yeah, it's going to be our first official film? I think no, it's still a little bear film.
Speaker 2:All right, I mean I would be down for a bear film.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so we're going to be taking a show show on the road. You might get some road episodes and dr dave might be on.
Speaker 2:You can talk to him about veterinary medicine. Yeah, I, my tradition with my dad is that he will. He will help pay for a tag that he gets invited to. Okay, hell, yeah. So my father, dr David Schoon the veterinarian, if you're. If you need veterinary help, westside Animal Hospital, san Cruz, california. Actually, they're small, don't go there. Don't go there. They're too busy. Dude straight up. He's like booked out for eight months.
Speaker 1:Damn.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's good. Well, my dad's a good vet. I know he panders to crazy cat people who need checkups once a month. Very cool. Anyway, he may be joining us, I know. Maybe talk to him about his crazy. He has one of the. I feel like I have a pretty crazy life. He has one of the wildest lives of a person I know, so maybe we'll talk to him about some life stories. Maybe he'll talk some shit about me.
Speaker 1:Hey, having met your dad, he is a cool fucking dude. Genuinely he's an interesting guy I like him a lot.
Speaker 2:He has the most dry sense of humor you'll ever have, Like straight up dry-ass humor.
Speaker 1:He's a good dude, and I met your mom too, my mom's yeah my mom's on Safeway oh, they're gonna be here this weekend, are they?
Speaker 2:yeah, you wanna see them. Yeah, um, and Beverly, the former state conference senator. Wait what? Yeah, well, my grandma has two PhDs. She was the first woman to get a PhD from Arizona State, nice, and she was a state assembly member for New Hampshire.
Speaker 1:No shit, that's cool as fuck.
Speaker 2:She is. I love my nana. She's going to be rocking the peach trekking poles to walk around Hell. Yeah, let's go Get her a drifter hydration. That's how it is. She might be, but yeah. So we're going to be talking about ideas, plans, general recap of what the tag is. Obviously we're not going to be starting to hunt it, but we'll talk about time of year. We might start this net and just like overall challenges that we're going to be facing, coming from a massive public land state to a very private land state like south dakota yeah, absolutely so.
Speaker 1:Yeah, um, the tag itself is an archery. Only public, private land, statewide, statewide tag which, coming from montana in particular one statewide tags for non-residents are really rare yes, um, even there's only really one.
Speaker 2:Yeah, there's the 900 archery animal.
Speaker 1:Yep, that's um, so it's strange for to have a statewide tag, but also that it that it is like so when you go on to I don't know their official South Dakota Fishing Games website and you're applying for non-resident tags I'm not giving any secret information away here there's two options for deer. It's not inclusive of rifle tags, but it's archery Private, private or archery public-private, which is a really strange thing. And then the state breaks down the state by units. So there are units and I think that applies mostly to the state by units. So there are units, and I think that applies mostly to the rifles. Yeah, and so the archery tag is statewide, but it still breaks down by unit, so we can go anywhere in the state, but it's still unit-specific, which is very confusing. It's not to go to figure your shit out.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I mean it's kind of like the 900. There's an antelope tag specifically for rifle where you can apply rifle, and then that's your tag rifle-wise. But then there's the 900, where you can can hunt everywhere except like two or three units, yeah, which I believe any open unit, yeah, what you're gonna hunt. So I believe it's gonna be kind of simple. I I think that, going into this tag, our biggest challenge, coming from montana, is understanding that we can find public but we might have to go the private if we want to be successful.
Speaker 1:So you know it's going to be one asking commission. We're going to have to take a trip out there this summer, so we're planning on a scouting trip. So if you live in South Dakota and you happen to hear this podcast and you know a good place to hunt deer and you're willing to let us come hunt deer on your place, we'll give you a benchmark. Taylor at the huntsmithpodcastcom, give me an email.
Speaker 2:That'd be a big ask we have to get, we would give them something.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we would like you know free merch and like if it like, you know free merch and like if it you know Honestly, yeah, and come on pod.
Speaker 2:We'd love to talk to you, Talk to anyone that is hunting South Dakota.
Speaker 1:If you have a like, if you've got a block of land or something that you farm and want two people with bows come shoot a couple deer, let us know. Like I said, you can actually info at. Huntswiftlypodcastcom is probably the best place to send that email, but you can also send it to me on Quench.
Speaker 2:So are you going to be running? We're kind of getting more into the specific details of this now. Are you going to be running the Phase 4 or the Hoik?
Speaker 1:Assuming my, are you going to be running the phase 4 or the hoik?
Speaker 2:assuming my hoik is here a little backup issue.
Speaker 1:But, yeah, probably the hoik, because I really want to shoot that. For those of you guys that don't know, I ordered a new hoik rx9, so their newest bow that I'm hoping to get here in the next couple of weeks, that I'm really looking forward to my first hoid for one. But yeah, it depends. If we end up doing a lot like blind, I genuinely I just don't know what the hunting is going to be. I'm going to spot and stalk.
Speaker 2:That's what I would like to do. I'm a spot and stalk guy. I can't sit in a blind. I will lose my shit.
Speaker 1:I think the big thing is, when I'm private, what they allow, very true. So if we're on private land and they're like you can only sit in a blind definitely gonna bring the point, because I got a smaller Axe of Axe with Bow, but if we're out and about I might bring both of those and make it a game time decision.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and on a contingency if we don't get permission, which is not an unlikely case. We kind of were bouncing back and forth between two options, the first of which is public, which, being from Montana, is life here. We're very fortunate to live in a state that has as much public as it does, and we will go and cameras hammer like pedal to the metal scout, see what deers are doing like, really try to like target bucks in the summer and see if they're coming into public at all. The second, and this is kind of like last case scenario, is LifeTrust, which I don't know.
Speaker 1:I mean, if we've got to do it, we've got to do it. But I think ultimately we're going to have to go take a boat, look out there, see what's out there, see what kind of conditions we get.
Speaker 2:I just. If I'm going to shoot anything, it has to be a Ford. A Ford, a Ford aren't good for you. I agree, I'm not shooting a Ford T, I'd rather eat the.
Speaker 1:T yeah, Kind of. Yeah yeah. I mean I'm not going to drive 500 miles just to shoot a dinker.
Speaker 2:No, I would shoot a decent, but I would shoot 140s and up. That's fair. If a 140 newly walks in front of me, I'm going to have a hard time saying no, that's reasonable.
Speaker 1:I mean you look at the trophy potential breakdown, most of the units are going to be 140 to 150. Yeah, and then with trophy potential 130 with jumpers 130 with flyers.
Speaker 2:That's fair. I would shoot a smaller basketed buck it doesn't have the frame and the bird if it had some flyers.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that's fair, I can get on board with that.
Speaker 2:But yeah, essentially it's just an archery hunt. As we go into the summer, start thinking about bows, start doing tack, we'll do more of a breakdown on what we're shooting Arrow-wise, bow-wise, gear-wise. This is going to be a very different hunt because I have a feeling that we're going to be doing a almost I wouldn't say like a hotel hunt, but like a stationary camp. This isn't like a backpack base camp. Yeah, this is like day hunt out kind of fun, where we might stay on one piece, public and, well, we need to read the rules, we need to go over regs. This is like a completely new experience because I've hunted similar kind of areas, like kind of conditions where it's like mostly private, like california, but there's still such an expanse of private public land there that you could go and do what you want. Yeah, but to hunt a state like the one of the dakotas is just going to be a completely new test and challenge of, like one, archery skills but two like logistic skills.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and I think a lot of it, and it's so, it's weird. I'll just say this, because it seems to be like relatively rare that we both drew the same tag. You know what I mean? Like that's like a 33 chance yeah, it's a.
Speaker 2:It's a, it's an inch, it's like a very slim, and that's what kind of makes me excited about it. Yeah, that we both drew, obviously besides our montana job.
Speaker 1:Yeah, of course but that's like in kitten as residents, we get our, our elk and our deer tag and our bear tag and turning tags.
Speaker 2:Yeah dogs.
Speaker 1:We get that every year, but yeah, it's. It's definitely an interesting kind of thought that we drew the same tag in the same state, in a state that neither of us have hunted before. Very new challenge.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's not like a over the counter Colorado hunt either. It's a. It's a. I would say it's a pretty low profile state.
Speaker 1:I would agree and I think the cool thing is going to be just based on what I know about South Dakota is it's more of a Midwestern state with rocky like Western game. Yep, I would love to go killer hybrid Whitetail mule.
Speaker 2:That would be crazy. But yeah, it's going to be interesting to see. Neither of us drew the antelope tag, which honestly, I'm kind of grateful for. Dude, that'd be a lot. I've been cooking on three antelope tags this year. I have a high chance, I think, of pulling my Montana one, and that's took me so long last year I should because I haven't pulled one in two years took me so long last.
Speaker 2:I should, because I haven't pulled one in two years. Yeah so, but um, essentially, deer, I think we're going to do about a week like a little scouting in the summer, and then we're going to kind of flesh this out live on pod. So when do you want to go?
Speaker 1:we have we can do an early season.
Speaker 2:No one scout. We're doing this for For the hunt. For the hunt.
Speaker 1:We can either do early season or we can send it in the run, so yeah, so we have to look at a couple things. I'd like to do it in the run because I think it'd be interesting. It's going to be cold as shit in South Dakota, though I have an interesting idea. Uh-huh, october, october, I can get on board with October.
Speaker 2:There is a little. We have to consider Super Bowl season here. Come on. We have to consider the Elf season. I love the Elf year, but I'm not going to South Dakota in September, no, I agree.
Speaker 1:The other option is August, because our tag starts August 15th, doesn't it?
Speaker 2:No.
Speaker 1:I'm tripping August 15th is 900.
Speaker 2:It no, oh, it doesn't. September 1st, I'm tripping, all right, august 15th is 900. No, there's something else that I have that I drew, that's whatever, but September 1st and January 1st, but rifle season's in November.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so our tag is also not valid during rifle season. Yes, so we have to look at that too.
Speaker 2:Yes, yeah, I think October would be good. I like October because we can still go look for bugs, it won't be terribly cold and it's not during the bright of elk season. Then we have valid tags and I think I don't know. I'm only taking four classes this semester Tuesday, thursdays. Yeah, going to be in school for three more years, probably five With my MBA and two more years of undergrad. Anyway, I schedule where I only have four classes in fall, I have six in spring.
Speaker 1:Mm-hmm, I think we can do it. So, yeah, I think, if we're gonna, I think we can do it. Oh yeah, that's easy. I just think we need to figure out dates and then I think we need to figure out if we kill we need to, then we really need to kill something in September. Like, really need to kill something in september.
Speaker 2:I always need to kill something.
Speaker 1:Well, yeah, but like so, because so I'm gonna reasonably, let's say so. I think I applied for the most tags this year, so let's say I drew everything so now I have.
Speaker 2:if one of us gets a once in a lifetime tag, I think our South Dakota hunt's fucked Yep 100%.
Speaker 1:Unfortunately, the way it is right now, it's bottom of the bear, it's not the main tag, but it's just fun because it's heavy that both of us pull.
Speaker 2:If I pull my Oregon tag, I can do a weekend Oregon. That's easy If one of us pulls a once-in-a-lifetime tag.
Speaker 1:Which I mean it's statistically improbable, but I have applied for all the once-in-a-lifetimes in Nevada, in Arizona, in Wyoming, in Utah, in Montana. Yeah so, but I also have tags that I think I probably should draw in Utah. Yeah so, let's so, if we're really going to flesh this out. So this is. You guys are hearing us plan our season right now, so I have, so let's say we both let's, let's just start with what we have priority wise right now montana elk tag is number one.
Speaker 1:Yep, number two, montana deer tag it depends for me, because if I pull my utah antelope tag, that's going to be number two, but that also starts in August.
Speaker 2:I would say my deer tag is tied with my antelope. If I pulled up 900 Montana, I would say Montana, purely out of convenience, is our pure number ones except. And then I would say South Dakota for me is tied with a potential Oregon tag. Sure, so that's like Hunsteader would be awesome. So Hunsteader, we definitely have.
Speaker 1:There's three right now that we both have.
Speaker 2:Well, you could easily get a pig tag in California. Yeah, that's like a.
Speaker 1:So we have Montana Deer General. So yeah, montana deer general.
Speaker 2:So yeah, montana elk general Deer and elk South Dakota.
Speaker 1:And South Dakota are the three that we're working on right now that we both have. Yes, so ideally we both kill an elk in archery season, and then I mean we can hunt the rut for mule deer In Montana, In Montana. And then I mean we can hunt the rut for mule deer In Montana, In Montana, which is like mid-November.
Speaker 2:Right now the way I'm kind of framing it is August archery, antelope. September, archery elk. October, south Dakota, deer. November Montana, deer.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah. And then everything filters in and with the assumption that we, if we draw the tags, yes.
Speaker 2:But as of where we're standing right now, that's our kind of hunt plan With a little mix in. You know, if I kill a deer in September in Montana, like I did fucking last year, then I'm hunting elk with a rifle, which is I love hunting elk with a rifle. I love hunting elk with a rifle.
Speaker 1:It's not the same.
Speaker 2:It's not the same.
Speaker 1:But I reasonably, if I draw my Nevada Mjolnir guide which is in a primo unit which has some potential for some very, very large.
Speaker 2:Is it a tree or a rifle Rifle, we're going to do that and I'm filming.
Speaker 1:Yeah, there's opportunity for a very large, very large deer.
Speaker 2:Like 70s plus 90s plus.
Speaker 1:Oh man, from what I know about the unit that I applied, in the potential there's like a 20% to 30% chance of a 200-inch plus deer. Okay, so if people that type are going to bet yeah, and hilariously so, this is how much I like mule deer hunting I applied for a what is essentially, from what I can tell, a once in a lifetime unit. Tag plus, and I've been applying is I have six points in nevada, I think. So drods are like right, 35 to 40% according to Bill Correct. And then I did the Silver State. Oh, you did the Silver State tag For Mjolnir as well.
Speaker 2:I just did my lottery ones for Montana. I was going to do Copper State, Arizona, but yeah.
Speaker 1:So we'll see. If the opportunity to go shoot a giant mule deer in a warm place arises, I think that would be a good move. I agree, south dakota is unfortunately kind of bottom of the barrel let's not put it at the bottom of the barrel, it's like on the back burner, it's like the dispensable. Yeah, it's also the least expensive tag for Iowa State A hundred percent.
Speaker 2:I do look forward to. Well, this isn't a dig on South Dakota, this is more of like a opportunity.
Speaker 1:Yeah, there's some other really large deer that might need to be killed in other states.
Speaker 2:And for me, my Oregon tag, it would be like a one-week trip just because my buddy has property and that's like a hunt. It's not really a hunt.
Speaker 1:Fair. How do you kill a whitetail on that one piece of property here?
Speaker 2:I would say that's a hunt. Most people I've seen a lot of people try and cannot do it.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but when you fill every doe tag you have.
Speaker 2:Yeah, well, I do. I would argue that has made me a way better hunter Fair. I'm spot and stock in whitetail Fair. I've seen a lot of people go out there and I know a lot of people that never even filled one of those tags very well. So keep that in mind. I've never done it, I mean. I mean it's one of those places where it's like I don't know I've gotten lucky for sure but. But I also feel like it makes me a better hunter, truly.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and then I think just hunting makes you a better hunter.
Speaker 2:But the thing is I have so many reps in the red zone. Because of it, I've been in within 25 yards of white-tailed deer, spot and snog For a week straight. I got 25 yards from this and it made it so. I didn't kill an elk with my brother's deer because of some situations, but I could have killed a bull at 40 yards. If me and my buddy weren't focused on the 370 bull, I would have been able'd kill the 330 bull.
Speaker 1:See, that's the thing. You gotta pay attention to what's going on around you.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we were on this hump and he's in this valley basin. At 85 yards and along the topography line of the hump, the 30 bull comes up and he has his head down. It's literally the hump. The 30-bowl comes up and he has his head down, it's literally the hump of the elk, and then his leg. And I could have shot and I would scroll to 85, and I had to rip it back and then set my arrow, then draw back, and by the time he did that he hopped a fence. That'll do it, but yeah, so I'm thinking October. I think that's a good time frame, convenience-wise for us as well, I agree it's kind of a dead season.
Speaker 1:Don't worry about this.
Speaker 2:About what that oh.
Speaker 1:I was looking at the computer, oh, okay.
Speaker 2:I was just reading through the things. Oh gotcha, it's a little bit of a dead season for me. It is, but it's like an average season for me because I'm just starting this whole application thing. I have a lot of applications sent out, but I didn't draw anything. I got my California deer elk point, though. There you go that right there. Those are worth killing, dude. I have access to a property where there's an elk herd. That's beautiful and I know if I draw that tag ever, I can go kill like a 310. Nice, which is like a huge tool. Yeah, very nice. It wouldn't be really a hunt, it'd be driving up on the side. I said I'd be doing a stock, but it fell.
Speaker 1:Well, I mean, it's still a hunt. Yeah it's a California hunt California, I have a Florida, but yeah, it's so.
Speaker 2:I mean the rollouts still happen. We'll see. Yeah, some big states still have to drop. Yeah, utah, nevada, I'm gonna try to. If you pull that Nevada tag, I'm gonna try my utmost to low-key, just like really scout, because I might be driving through Nevada a few times.
Speaker 1:Okay, yeah, I mean I think realistically, if we get like I'm gonna go, I'll probably get on there for a week and a half if I, if I pull up leading up to it yeah, um, if we with south dakota, if we go out there, maybe like once or twice, I think that's enough I will, I don't know, maybe set a camera too. Yeah I, I, I think. See, south dakota just really interests me because it's a Midwestern style of hunting.
Speaker 2:With Western animals, with Western beginners. I've never been to South Dakota, I've been to North Dakota.
Speaker 1:I have. I've been around Rushmore, so I don't know if that counts. I do want to go see Rushmore. If we go there, yeah, or for the night, yeah, so that's kind of like. I mean South Dakota is definitely. I want to say it's going to be an easier hunt.
Speaker 2:It's not going to be an easier hunt. It's going to be a different hunt. Yeah, like a different style, different tactics, different ideas. Yeah, 100%. I do not want to classify it as easy.
Speaker 1:Well, it's going to be, you know, not up and down balance, I don't think because. But we're going to be in the prairie, it's going to be flat.
Speaker 2:But that's difficulties on their own. We'll see. It's just eastern Montana, that's all it is. If you want some permission on South Dakota, you better put respect on the South.
Speaker 1:I dig South Dakota. South Dakota's a cool city.
Speaker 2:Just straight up buy a piece of property.
Speaker 1:Go find the biggest deer I can and buy the property and put high fence up.
Speaker 2:I'm anti-high fence hunting.
Speaker 1:Extremely anti-high fence hunting. I think that tag is going to be really really fun. I think that tag is going to be really really fun. I think the elk tags this year are going to be really, really fun. Mule deer is always funny because it's the best species to hunt. It's fat. Everyone knows, Everybody knows Archery elk, Archery elk, Archery elk. I still kicked myself last year. I took a shot and it was pretty far. But Archery elk, Archery elk, Archery elk I still kicked myself last year. I took a shot at it Pretty far. But I can hit that at point every day normally.
Speaker 2:But you know, whatever it's, what it is. Yeah, I had a good season last year. I'm going to keep that ball in.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I mean. Well, you got to kill a bear then.
Speaker 2:Tell me about it. I've been trying for three years to kill a goddamn bear. Yeah, with a lot of consistent effort and work.
Speaker 1:I've been not really trying. I've been trying to find. I think I talked about this on oh wow, yeah, you're trying to find the one we did with prey pursuit. Um, yes, I've heard that. No, that's not pretty good. Um, no, but yeah, I'm trying to. I'm trying to kill the bear, the one bear that is color phase, preferably cinnamon, I do not care about.
Speaker 2:I will go shoot any bear, any bear that's reasonably sized.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that's right. I mean, I talked to Drew the other day this was last year when Drew killed his glorified spike, like yeah, I'd rather eat the tag than kill something that I'm not like super stoked about.
Speaker 2:Hmm.
Speaker 1:I don't know. Put it in the comments.
Speaker 2:I would say, if you're hunting for, meat.
Speaker 1:Well, yeah, I mean, but I also killed two cows, so like the meat thing was taken care of. If your meat's taken care of, then there's no reason to. Yeah, I just if I'm gonna kill a bull or a buck or anything. I get from what he said that genetics is weird.
Speaker 2:if I'm going to kill a bull or a buck or anything, I guess from what he said that genetics is weird.
Speaker 1:No, I know and I'm not shooting shots at Drew. I know you're not listening to this, but yeah, it's like I just I don't know If I'm not going to kill something that I'm super stoked on.
Speaker 2:I would be stoked on, I think, any elk with a bow.
Speaker 1:That's fair. That's totally fair and I, if I got a good shot on any like 5x5, I'd probably kill it. I wouldn't kill a 4.
Speaker 2:I would. With a bow, I would kill a 4. With a rifle, I'm not shooting anything below 6x6 anymore, unless it's a tank or 5.
Speaker 1:I was going to say 300s with a rifle, which is hard to do, I know you don't have to come. I mean you don't have to send us text messages and shit, which, by the way, you can do. In the description of the podcast there's a link that says text us and you can tell us how much you hate us or how much you love us, how much you hate us or how much you love us or how much you think we're idiots.
Speaker 2:I, I, I heard I saw our first piece of um hate, hate me, did you? Yeah, where I'll tell you about it later, okay, but I saw it and I was like damn, thanks for listening on on like Instagram.
Speaker 1:Instagram, really, that's hilarious.
Speaker 2:I'll tell you about it later, but we did get our. That's how you know we're doing well, yeah, 100%.
Speaker 1:Let's go. If people are hating, then cool.
Speaker 2:Whatever, it was more of a personal attack on me. I was hating the pod Was it someone, we know no, someone you don't know Okay. It was more of an attack on me. I'm like thanks for listening to the pod. Yeah, hey.
Speaker 1:Like I said, if you guys have nothing nice to say, put it in the comments section. We need that engagement, baby. Go to YouTube, dislike the video and then put it in the comments section. Hell yeah, that's the move. Or you know what's even what? Even better, double click the dislike button. We love our haters. Yeah, no, yeah, I mean. Hey, you know, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, and if you guys don't like us, then that's cool america, and I still love you.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we do. I love everyone. That's what I've come to. I don't love everyone.
Speaker 1:I that's what I've come to. I don't love everyone. There's definitely people I dislike.
Speaker 2:There's very few people I think.
Speaker 1:I dislike, I don't hate anybody, but there's a couple people I dislike. I know one of them and I think, Drew, if you're listening, you know one of them too.
Speaker 2:But anyway, I try to keep my heart an open spot. I like to be nice. I feel like I'm like too nice, except in public I'm kind of a dick because I just don't talk, because I'm extremely introverted. That's fair. Like, yeah, I'll just like stone cold people, if you guys.
Speaker 1:Uh no, I'll just say this again we're not like trying to like promote, but if you ever see me in public and you come up to me for some reason, you feel the need to come up to me. I don't know why I'm not that cool, but if you come up to me in public and I seem like an asshole, it's because I don't understand what's happening.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I'm an extreme introvert. I went through one of my classes this entire semester and I counted the amount of words. I said nice, 107, nice during the semester and it was like an 18 person call I'm gonna say you definitely got that participation I.
Speaker 2:I the participation was, uh, just showing up fair, because it was one of those leadership classes where it's like tell us about your personality. Like, do the myers-briggs test? I'm like introvert. I was like the top, one of the top introverts in the class. They're like oh, so you don't like to talk? I'm like, and then I was in this presentation and this kid calls me out. He's like oh, quinton, why don't you like? Do you have any questions, quinton? Because clearly, like you love to talk, and I gave him this, look like I would murder him and like everyone else in the class straight up, like, came up to me afterwards like what was that about? What was that? That was kind of a dick move. Yeah, I'm like don't call me out, bitch. Yeah, I will kill you. I know it's you just um, yeah, I mean like I promise it's you Jit.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I mean, I promise it's not me being an asshole, it's just me being startled that someone actually knows who I am.
Speaker 2:Exactly. I don't expect to ever have someone come up to me. If that happens, I will straight up. I would be like huh.
Speaker 1:I feel like a lot of people in Bozeman have found out about this podcast. You think, yeah, the fuck yeah, dude.
Speaker 2:What yeah? No way, yeah. How do you know that?
Speaker 1:I just I have a feeling, yeah, I've seen something. Oh really, yeah, not like a bad thing. It was just like I had someone look at me like, and they, kind of like, went to their computer could be other things though.
Speaker 1:I don't know what the fuck anyone else would know me from unless I told them no, at Sportsman's or anything else as a manager, which that I have seen someone in person that I like he was being an asshole and I was like, dude, you can just leave. And he recognized me. He come up to you, nope. But I could see it in his eyes that he recognized me and I thought that was really fucking funny.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I don't know People recognize it Sick. I genuinely would love. That was really fucking funny. Yeah, I, I don't know if people recognize it sick. Yeah, I, I I genuinely would love to receive feedback like what can you better?
Speaker 1:100. Um. I know the sound thing. It's getting better every single time. I'm just trying to fill this house that we're sitting in with stuff to absorb sound like we have a giant fucking sound absorbing sheet over here now and carpets and stuff and dogs. I'm buying more dogs so we can have them absorb sound too. But yeah, I'm trying, we're trying to make it.
Speaker 2:I think it's coming along pretty good.
Speaker 1:And then we're working on the backdrop and stuff. We're trying to make this more of a.
Speaker 2:Again, we're doing a giveaway I think I talked about that already. We're trying to be more like kind of commit to this I think so.
Speaker 1:I mean, I painted a room in my house for this.
Speaker 2:So yeah, do you want to talk about potential location?
Speaker 1:thing. Oh yeah, so we're also. I'm not going to tell you guys where, because I also don't want someone to just go snap it up it's not.
Speaker 1:It's not even just that location yeah, but we are, we're looking for. So I guess this kind of started, not this podcast, but okay, let's, let's officially chapter this, because I go through and I chapter all this stuff like plans for the future and kind of where we're going. So I've always wanted to open my own gun store and now that we're kind of doing this and the listenership is actually surprisingly high, for I think we've had over 100 people listen to us now, which is pretty good for three episodes. Yeah, so over 100 people listen to us now Wow, which is pretty good for three episodes. Yeah. So I think that, realistically, we want to get a space for this company and this podcast, but we're also going to be doing so. If you don't follow us on YouTube which you know if you don't follow us on YouTube, we don't, it's up to you. We're going to start doing a lot of reviews. I had an idea today about doing a taste test of freeze-dried food. I know it fucks with your stomach, but I can do it, you can do it.
Speaker 2:I don't think Freeze-dried food and me just don't get along. Yeah, I will eat it, and there's only a few kinds I can the chicken and rice. I can eat that.
Speaker 1:So I was thinking, since every single free-striped food company makes biscuits and gravy, do a bit, just a straight.
Speaker 2:I want to try Gastronome.
Speaker 1:So Gastronome, I haven't tried Wild Society which is another bozeman company. I tried their business meeting gravy I had for breakfast the other morning I was like fuck.
Speaker 2:Well, okay, I would be more down.
Speaker 1:I would be down to do it if we could get a chicken rice thing, biscuits and gravy is the only thing that is across the board with most companies. That was the first reason. Then I was going to say let's find whatever the most popular one is. So I know the chicken and rice one from Peak is their most popular. So if you do that, then a Mountain House one I don't know what they're I think probably Terriyard Chicken, yeah, is their most popular. And I mean we can go into Wild Society and Castronome, because they're both here in Bozeman, and get their most popular one and then do that as a tasting.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:So I think that so again. But then we're doing reviews, like I'm filming a Tricer tripod review because I got that, so that'll be up next week on YouTube.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we're going to start doing more video content for him besides just podcasts, because we did as or Swiftie did as the big guy he is got a Sony, yeah, so I mean.
Speaker 1:I've got. I have that, I have another 4K camera, but we have some cool video stuff coming down the pipe just for the sake of, like you know, giving you guys more content.
Speaker 2:I guess I would say also the goal, honestly, is like multimedia kind of development. So just podcasting is like our bread and butter right now. It's just expanding off.
Speaker 1:It's easy for us to because we're friends, so it's easy for us to sit and bullshit about stuff and talk about tags and all like our experiences hunting and stuff. But we also have a lot more to offer.
Speaker 2:I would say Swifty's expertise when it comes to firearms is something that I think you, as listeners, would find extremely important.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and likewise with Quentin and Bows. I'm a newbie when it comes to Bows, but you've kind of thrown yourself in headfirst into yes, I don't know that many people that have been shooting Bows for three or four years, that have built a Bow themselves.
Speaker 2:Mine was out of necessity. My Bow was built a few times, but still it's like. Well, I will not take the whole credit. That was Eric. I had a great resource with a shop.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but how many people do you know, that know the difference between Like, if you just handed them, know the difference between strings and cables? No one that I know of I'd probably know, three people.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I don't know. I I would say I have some valid information, but there's so many good archery resources out there and what I think sets could set us apart is your willingness to share and resource. On rifles, yeah, and I think that's a great benefit. I think if I was going to really bring anything to the table, it would come from kind of a mindset of a new hunter diet, sure and that's.
Speaker 1:I mean again. So I go back to our first episode. Yeah, that's. That's a lot of what we talked about Am.
Speaker 2:I not. I mean, honestly, I feel like we haven't touched on it as much, but there's like little moments we do touch on. Yeah, so I kind of like talking like gear dumps I can tell you exactly why you should spend the money. Yeah, so that's something like, obviously, gear dumps are going to be something we're going to do reviews or something we're going to do new products we're going to talk about them. We I I think we had a few conversations about really trying to dive into more like kind of gear or like very filmed professionally kind of things, and then, like the hunt films will definitely be something further down the pipe. Yep, as we continuously put out more content 100%.
Speaker 1:We want to be, at least in my mind, kind of a video resource for you guys to have, at least from my end, with rifles and stuff like that.
Speaker 1:I like shooting, I like shooting long range, I like doing all that kind of stuff. So being able to put that information out there for you guys, whether it's reloading ballistics, all that kind of stuff you know is a one-place shop, and then being able to take that, translating it into hunting and all that kind of stuff, I think would be interesting, especially for a new hunter. I already have two videos planned that we need to film as far as, like, base layer, ground floor knowledge, which is one is how to buy a rifle. Yes, like what the process is, because having worked I mean we both worked at a gun shop and having people that come in for their first time and not really understanding that process, I think would you know, if there's a video, it's like hey, don't be intimidated. I know it is an intimidating process. I don't know the first time I ever do a gun store and bought a rifle. It is, it is incredibly intimidating.
Speaker 2:Just like knowing what to look for Obviously not talking like what to fill out on the 4473, but understanding what.
Speaker 1:I'm not even going to go into the 4473, just because that's legal documents that you guys need to fill out yourself. But, like, at least I know, when I bought my first hunting rifle for myself because my first hunting rifle was a gift um, like going in and you have your first rifle, it was my tico, tico, t3, t3 cartridge, uh 271, jester.
Speaker 2:So, given that when I was in high school, so I got my first ever was a gruger american 308.
Speaker 1:That that's pretty good, yeah, just being able to like, because when you tell someone you're going to buy your first rifle, everybody has something like some sort of input.
Speaker 2:Everyone has something to say Everyone has a preference.
Speaker 1:Your friends shoot. You know may shoot a 300 wind mag. He's like you need to go get that. But like jumping to 300 wind mag from you know nothing is a big jump. So maybe we're going to look at something a little less than that, like a 7 rim bag or 7mm 08. And it's like we can talk you through that process, and I've contacted a gun store here in the greater Bozeman area that is interested in doing that with us. So just being able to go in and being like hey, I'm a new shooter, I want to get into hunting, or I've been bow hunting.
Speaker 2:Whatever it is, I want to get a rifle.
Speaker 1:What do I need to look for and all that kind of stuff. And it is incredibly knowledgeable shop and so we want to bring that kind of stuff to you. Going into a bow shop and being able to buy a bow, that kind of thing I think is going to be really helpful. And then like just what to look for in gear, and that's kind of the point of a review. You know it's like, well, let's look at you know the break. So this review on this, this tricer tripod or bipod excuse me, tricer bipod that just came out that I'm getting, I'm literally going to film tonight and then I'm going to go out and shoot with it and then I'm going to come back and give you my final thoughts. It's like what's good, what's bad? Why should you spend $350 on a Bipod, yeah, or why you shouldn't spend $300. And you'll actually see that before you hear this podcast and stuff like that Talking about our drifter hydration systems. We talk about them a lot. We love drifter hydration. Those guys are awesome.
Speaker 1:But I think that we have enough time with those that we can give you a genuine honest opinion on them. Yeah, and I think we're at the point where no one's giving us free shit, like no one cares about us, so we can give you, I can say, anyone opinion yeah, we're not sponsored, we're not getting free items, we're not forced to do so everything are is like our opinion yeah, we have, we have. I mean, like I said, we have a relationship with drifter.
Speaker 2:We're very not casual like we have. So before we started the podcast, we had a video call with yeah, with ross from drifter, and we were talking about what he was thinking. He's like you got it sounds awesome, just continue doing what you're doing. Yeah, we'll reach out and we'll talk to you.
Speaker 1:But that was like a very informal, non-contracted thing, but our opinion of it has remained the same, even before that and, like, when I initially sent him the email and I reached out to him, I was like, hey, I love your product, quentin loves your product. This is why we want to have at least a relationship of some sort. And I mean, it's the same thing. I've reached out to a couple other companies that I'm waiting to hear back from, but we're not reaching out as like, hey, send us free shit, we'll promote it for you. It's because we like this product, we use this product, we believe in this product. Therefore, we are reaching out to potentially have a partnership of some sort, and 95% of what I'm talking to these people about is for this giveaway that we're doing. We already own your backpacks. Would you be willing to partner with us for a giveaway? Just so I mean, again're in a non-existent podcast in the world of podcast, but we want to give you guys some cool shit because you're listening, because you're listening and because you're willing to spend an hour, two hours, three hours with us every week. We want to give back to you guys. And so know, like, if it can cut the cost by $1,000 on the giveaway, then sick, we're cutting the cost and that's going to allow us in the future to give back more. So just know that you know nothing.
Speaker 1:That we're talking about like the Tricer tripod I bought with my bipod. Excuse me, it's so weird to say a Tricer bipod, because it's like their name is tricer, like triceratops. Their logo is a is a triceratops, yeah, which is a triple horn. So it's very it's hard for me to say, uh, tricer bipod. But yeah, I bought that tricer bipod myself. I pre-ordered it, um, so I got it for a little less money because I pre-ordered it, but overall it's the same thing. So just be aware that when we're doing these reviews, we bought the stuff with our own money or we're free to tell you guys what we actually think. So, yeah, I don't know why I went off on that tangent.
Speaker 2:But anyway, I think, as we're going to start start wrapping up this, thank you guys very much for listening. We hope to hear any feedback you have. Keep in mind the youtube will start becoming more active. Yep, instagram thousand follower giveaway, show us your friends not.
