Episode 1 Izzy: From Lecture Halls to Lockup
Welcome to the Picky Bits podcast, each week I sit down with our guests to chat about navigating unique life experiences, using food as the road map. From niche jobs to niche snacks, it’s all fair game.
In this first episode, I sit down with one of my best pals Izzy, who became a prison officer straight out of uni. While most of us were still figuring out how to work a printer, she was navigating one of the toughest environments imaginable — with courage, compassion, and her signature sense of humour.
We talk about the importance of meals behind bars, how sharing food between cells helps build community, what it meant to hold space for people in crisis, how she narrowly avoided being part of Daniel Khalife's prison escape and how the job shaped her in ways she’s still unpacking. It’s honest, moving, and full of the kind of reflections you only get from someone who’s really lived it.
It’s messy, it’s moving, and it might just change the way you think about prison.
