The Gift of Lament - Lamentations 1

1. Jerry Sittser's story illustrates that "the only way out of the
darkness is to walk straight through it." Has there been a moment in
your life where facing pain head-on — rather than avoiding it —
actually led somewhere meaningful? What sustained you?
2. The sermon suggests that minimizing or burying our suffering is
like "trying to heal cancer with a bandaid." What does it look like
practically to be honest about your pain, rather than just
moving on quickly? Is there a loss or grief in your own life that you
haven't fully acknowledged yet?
3. The sermon points out that Israel had a habit of crying out to all
the wrong things — money, alliances, false gods — instead of God. When
you're in pain, what are the things you tend to reach for first? What
does that reveal about where you're actually placing your trust?
4. Jeremiah directed his raw, unpolished grief straight at God. What
tends to be your first instinct when you're in pain — and how does it
compare to Jeremiah's response? What would it take for you to feel
free to bring God your anger, your questions, or your "half-baked
thoughts"?
