gwunspoken - Beyond the Plan

Navigating School, Gaming, and Life with Arie

Garry

There's something magical about seeing the world through a child's eyes – where honesty flows freely, perspectives are refreshingly straightforward, and life's complexities are distilled into beautifully simple terms.

In this heartwarming return episode, young Arie joins us again to share his thoughts on everything from school life to family pets. With remarkable articulation for his age, he offers candid insights into the reality of bullying, explaining that people sometimes tease others "because when they get very angry." When asked what makes someone a good friend, his answer is touchingly practical: "Being nice to people... Like when they go to the ground, help them get up."

The conversation meanders through his entertainment preferences (Moana 2 is a favourite because "she has a special power that she can control water"), his gaming world (complete with a special microphone for connecting with friends while playing Roblox), and his impressive menagerie of pets – including two cats that hilariously "box each other" on their hind legs. Throughout it all, Arie displays an astonishing memory, recalling specific dates, song titles, and details about his pets with remarkable precision.

Perhaps most endearing is Arie's willingness to showcase his musical talents once again, bravely singing "All My Life" without hesitation or self-consciousness – a reminder of the natural confidence many children possess before the world teaches them doubt. As our conversation concludes with the promise of singing "Chasing Paradise" during his next visit, we're left reflecting on the wisdom, humour, and unique perspectives that children bring to our lives when we simply take the time to listen.

Join us for this delightful glimpse into childhood that will leave you smiling, nodding in recognition, and perhaps seeing your own world with slightly fresher eyes.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to another edition of GW Unspoken Beyond the Plan On behalf of EngageU, and I've got a very, very special guest. He's come back on the podcast, which I know lots of people love this. His name is Ari Ari. How are you Good? What's today? Do you know what today is?

Speaker 1:

Saturday.

Speaker 2:

Once again. I remember that last time we did this podcast, you were very quick at answering, and you're already quick again, aren't you?

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

What was the most significant thing? What was the most important? Thing, you did last time on the podcast. Do you remember Singing? You had to sing and you were our very first person singing. Yeah, now, I did send that recording to your mum and then your dad separately. What did they say about your podcast last time?

Speaker 1:

Very cool.

Speaker 2:

Very cool. What do you think of the podcast last time?

Speaker 1:

Very cool as well.

Speaker 2:

Well, I think you're very cool. Now are you ready for some more questions today?

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Do you want them to be easy or challenging questions?

Speaker 1:

Easy.

Speaker 2:

All right, we'll start off easy, then we'll see how we go, you ready.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Do you have a preference of what we talk about first?

Speaker 1:

No.

Speaker 2:

All right, let's talk about the weather. It's raining outside.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Do you like it when it's rainy or sunny?

Speaker 1:

Sunny.

Speaker 2:

Do you like it when it's cold or hot?

Speaker 1:

Hot.

Speaker 2:

Why.

Speaker 1:

Because when you get cold you can probably freeze to death.

Speaker 2:

Now, when I picked you up, was it cold. Yeah, why was it cold?

Speaker 1:

Because it was raining.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we had to run through the rain, didn't we? Yeah, and we got a nice warm car.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

I felt like falling asleep. Yeah, lucky I didn't. When I was driving, hey, yeah, you'd have to drive. No, can you drive a car? No, well, that would be awkward, wouldn't it? How do we get home? Would you go outside and push?

Speaker 1:

No.

Speaker 2:

That'd be a bit unfair, wouldn't it? Yeah, okay, so you like summer months?

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

All right, let's talk a bit about you. How old are you?

Speaker 1:

Two.

Speaker 2:

You're two years old. Oh wow, You're speaking very well for a two-year-old, aren't?

Speaker 1:

you, hey David.

Speaker 2:

Very good. Okay, so you're a very big two-year-old aren't you? Are you in grade two?

Speaker 1:

No.

Speaker 2:

You're in grade Three, three Okay.

Speaker 1:

Which school.

Speaker 2:

Are you at Anchor State College? Okay, anchor, and do you like school?

Speaker 1:

No.

Speaker 2:

Okay, that's very honest. I like that. So if I said out of five fiveives I love school, one is like I don't like school what number would you be out of five?

Speaker 1:

The worst one is bullying.

Speaker 2:

Also, I had a lot of bullying, bullying. So what number out of five would you feel like school is? Is it a one or two, or three, or four or five? If five's the best and one's the worst, what's school for you? School, okay, and so there's some bullying at school? Yeah, do you get bullied?

Speaker 1:

Not that much, but sometimes. What do you get bullied about? I don't really know now, because that was when I was in year one.

Speaker 2:

Oh, it was a long time ago. Yeah, how does it?

Speaker 1:

feel when you get bullied, very sad. Yeah, it's sad, isn't it?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and do you see people being bullied at school now in your grade?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but not you Not me no, and do you Not?

Speaker 2:

me? No, and you know what. It's not just your school, it happens in all schools. You know that. Yeah, you know. I know there's parents out there who think there's schools that have snowballing, but there's always bullying in some kind of school. Yeah, why do you think people bully?

Speaker 1:

Because they want to tease everyone.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, but why would they want to tease people?

Speaker 1:

Because when they get very angry, they want to tease.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah. Have you ever done any bullying to people? Nope, that's good. That's good. Yeah, a lot of people who have things in their life going on that's not good. They often bully other people to make themselves feel better. Yeah, which isn't right, is it?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, do you ever right, is it?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, do you ever see girls bullied too? No, and you've seen boys bullied, mm-hmm, okay, so what are some fun things about school, though?

Speaker 1:

Playing with my friends, mm-hmm, maths.

Speaker 2:

You like maths?

Speaker 1:

Speaker 2:

All right, I'm going to ask you. It's now time for a challenging question. Are you up for it?

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Okay, here we go, and, by the way, I like how you're taking your time to think about your answers too. I love that.

Speaker 1:

What makes someone a good friend by being nice.

Speaker 2:

Being nice to people. How do you be nice to people? What does?

Speaker 1:

Speaker 1:

It was cool, because Maui is it called Maui. Yeah, maui is it called Maui.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, Maui.

Speaker 1:

Maui pulled up, the pulled up a entire land.

Speaker 2:

Oh, because of his strength.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Nice, and he's got a magic sword, hasn't he?

Speaker 1:

He has a magic hook.

Speaker 2:

Hook, magic hook. That's right. And what about Heihei? Isn't Heihei the chicken? Yeah, that's so funny. That's so funny. Yeah, is Moana your favourite person in that movie? Or who's your favourite person, moana? Why?

Speaker 1:

Because she has a special power.

Speaker 2:

What's her special power?

Speaker 1:

That she can control water.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 1:

Christmas Holidays.

Speaker 2:

Don't like that movie. Yeah, okay, fair enough, all right, we've talked about friends, we've talked about movies. We've talked about food. I know what we can talk about now. Let's talk about your brother.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Do you live with your brother all the time? Yeah, his name is Oscar. He is how old?

Speaker 1:

12, 10, 13.

Speaker 2:

Ooh.

Speaker 1:

And he's in grade Seven.

Speaker 2:

Oh, and I know brothers do sort of wrestle and squabble a bit, but do you mostly get along with him? Do you usually get along with him? No, you don't. You don't get along with him. We fight A bit, yeah.

Speaker 1:

What do you fight about?

Speaker 2:

On the PlayStation. Oh my gosh, do you play PlayStation? Yeah, what PlayStation number have you got?

Speaker 1:

That was a while ago. Yeah, now we have two.

Speaker 2:

Two PlayStations yeah, oh my gosh, how do you play two at the same time? I can't this one? Okay, not working, it's working on here.

Speaker 1:

Mine is number one.

Speaker 2:

How's that?

Speaker 1:

Good.

Speaker 2:

Okay, you've got two PlayStations.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

How do you play two PlayStations at the same time?

Speaker 1:

Oscar plays on the other PlayStation and I play on the other PlayStation, even though I got my brand new mic, a gaming mic, have you?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, does it happen like does a gaming mic hop, does it go on your earphones, like your headphones, or does it come separate, like the ones we're on now?

Speaker 1:

It's like ones that can connect to the desk and then go towards and have that screen thing to make your voice go better, and a microphone.

Speaker 2:

Oh.

Speaker 1:

It goes like this, and then you can talk.

Speaker 2:

And does it get very loud? Nope, is it very clear like these ones.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

And who do you talk to?

Speaker 1:

My friends.

Speaker 2:

Okay, how does that work? So you're playing games but you're talking to your friends at the same time? Yeah, how do you do that? Do you mean like you're both playing? You're all playing the same game.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but I'm plugged in to the keyboard onto the PlayStation.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

So I don't have to use the PlayStation to talk, I can use the mic.

Speaker 2:

Is it better? Yeah, how long have you had that for?

Speaker 1:

Again.

Speaker 2:

How long have you had that for?

Speaker 1:

29th of January.

Speaker 2:

Oh, that's very specific. What happened on the 29th of January? Was it your birthday? No, how come?

Speaker 1:

you got it on the 29th of January, was it?

Speaker 2:

your birthday? No, how come you got it on the 29th of January? Or you used to remember that date. Yeah, you used to remember it. Yeah, so who do you talk to when you're doing your PlayStation games?

Speaker 1:

My friends Dom.

Speaker 2:

Yep.

Speaker 1:

Xander. Xander, yeah, and my brother Oscar.

Speaker 2:

Now, what kind of should I even ask this question? Yeah, what kind of games do we play?

Speaker 1:

Roblox Yep, minecraft, yep no Fortnite.

Speaker 2:

No.

Speaker 1:

Fortnite, because Oscar swears in it.

Speaker 2:

Yes, probably not good for young people either. Is it so? Fortnite and Minecraft? No, minecraft and Roblox All right. What's your favourite out of those two?

Speaker 1:

I would say Roblox.

Speaker 2:

And so people are going to laugh at me because I've never played it before. What's the main thing with Roblox? What do you do? What's the whole idea of the game? What do you have to do?

Speaker 1:

You have to. Some games you have to get stronger and fly. Some games you have to grow stuff. Okay, and some games are simulators.

Speaker 2:

Ooh, that's a big word. Yeah, what do simulators mean?

Speaker 1:

Like a game, like I don't really know. Okay.

Speaker 2:

It's like a make-believe sort of game.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Okay, yeah, cool, and do you often win? No, no.

Speaker 1:

In Grow a Garden.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 2:

When you Grow a garden. Okay, I'm the best player when you grow a garden. Yeah, ooh, very good, very good. Now, when are you allowed to play games?

Speaker 1:

When was I able?

Speaker 2:

Yeah. So when does mum and dad say you're allowed to play games? Only at this time, Like when are you allowed to play games at home?

Speaker 1:

At 12 or 3. School days 3 and weekends 12.

Speaker 2:

From 12 o'clock.

Speaker 1:

Speaker 2:

Speaker 1:

Speaker 1:

with the game I just go like beep, beep beep.

Speaker 2:

Do you ever sing on your microphone? No, not in your games. No, do you know if you sang on your microphone during games? Do you ever put on your microphone? No, not in your games. No, do you know if you sang on your microphone during games? Do you ever put the other person off?

Speaker 1:

I'll put my mic off. Well, I can't, because it will only block the PlayStation one, except for the mic.

Speaker 2:

Oh, okay, can PlayStation still play DVDs? No one does DVDs anymore.

Speaker 1:

You can still do DVDs.

Speaker 2:

Do you have DVDs at home of movies and songs?

Speaker 1:

I watch Paw Patrol.

Speaker 2:

Oh, paw Patrol, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1:

That's all I watch.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, I watch funny cat videos.

Speaker 2:

Oh, I've heard about these funny cat videos. Is it when cats just do silly things? Yeah, what's the funniest one you reckon you've seen a cat do in those cat funny videos?

Speaker 1:

The first one that I ever seen was a cat in a cat carrier, and the person was trying to get it, but it slipped out of its hand and then landed on the ground.

Speaker 2:

Do you have a cat at your mum's or dad's place?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I have a cat at my dad's.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 1:

Speaker 2:

Is that because you were teasing her?

Speaker 1:

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

That's what she did and then went like oh, and a hiss. No bit me.

Oh yeah, they stick on the side of the glass. You see the lips against the wall, is that right? Yeah, okay, and a goldfish.

Speaker 1:

Yep Any more. I got one and like 10 black and orange fish.

Speaker 2:

How big is the fish tank? Is it massive? Yeah, there's not a shark in there. Is there? No, there's not a dolphin in there. No, no whales, that's lucky. Do you have names for your fish?

Speaker 1:

No.

Speaker 2:

Not even a gold one.

Speaker 1:

Goldie.

Speaker 2:

Goldie, that's a good one. I like that. So you've got a heap of fish.

Speaker 1:

What.

Speaker 2:

So you've got a heap of fish, you've got two dogs, you've got two cats and fish and fish Any other animals you've got on cats and fish and fish, any other animals you've got on your farm or in your place no birds, no budgies, no cockatoos, no cockatiels, no. Magpies, no. Pelicans, no, all right, that's a lot of animals, isn't it?

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Very good, all right. Well, we've nearly come to an end of this podcast, but there is a couple of questions. I've got Music.

Speaker 1:

All my Life.

Speaker 2:

All my Life. Yeah, that's the song you like to sing. Yeah, is it the one you sang last time?

Speaker 1:

No, last time I did right foot first.

Speaker 2:

That's right. You're right foot first, and does that mean you're going to sing All my Life today?

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Are you going to be brave enough to sing again today?

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

I love it when you do that. That's so cool. All right, are you going to sing now? Yeah, okay, do you want me to say three, two, one, all?

Speaker 1:

my life I've been waiting for tonight. I've been waiting for tonight all my life. All my life, I've been waiting for tonight.

Speaker 2:

How good was that? Yes, I just don't know where you get your bravery from. How do you get so brave?

Speaker 1:

I don't know.

Speaker 2:

Do you feel nervous singing? No, it's amazing. It's amazing. That's so good and so can you remember, by the way, that was really good. Can you remember the songs you played on Spotify on the way over here from your place to the library here in the studio?

Speaker 1:

All my Life Chasing Paradise. I Was Made For Loving you by Kiss.

Speaker 2:

And was there one more? What about the one that Dad likes?

Speaker 1:

Purple Rain.

Speaker 2:

Purple Rain by Prince. How do you have this big? Where did this big memory come from? I don't understand how you got such a good memory. And this is a scary thing I actually got Ari to say because my phone was on the charging dock and playing music through the, I suppose through the radio. We plugged it in, but I asked Ari to unlock my phone using my passcode and he remembered it. Yeah, I asked Ari to unlock my phone using my passcode and he remembered it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Should I be worried that you can get into my phone now? No, should I be scared? No, you've done a good job remembering that. And so mum liked the Kiss song and dad liked Purple Rain by Prince.
