Milkshakes, Playgrounds, and Podcasting with Memphys
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Meet Memphy, our delightful young guest who returns to share his unique perspective on life, friendship, and future dreams. Recorded in the Digital Studio at North Lakes Library, this conversation beautifully captures the unfiltered wisdom that can only come from a child's point of view.
The episode begins with Memphys recounting playground adventures—scaling a three-level climbing structure to reach an exciting slide while battling hungry birds determined to steal their afternoon snack. When asked why he enjoys podcasting, Memphys thoughtfully explains that he loves sharing about himself and his life, demonstrating remarkable self-awareness for his age.
What truly shines throughout this conversation is Memphys's natural empathy. Given the opportunity to send a message to listeners, he offers a heartfelt shoutout "to all my friends out there that let me play with them," wishing them all "a good life." This beautiful moment reveals his capacity to think beyond himself—a quality Garry rightfully celebrates.
Our rapid-fire question session uncovers Memphys's preferences (banana milkshakes reign supreme), dreams (visiting Paris and America to meet his favourite YouTubers), and values. When asked about the best thing about home, his immediate response—"being with my family"—serves as a touching reminder of what truly matters in life.
The conversation evolves into playful plans for a future podcast series called "MAG" (Memphys And Garry), with Memphys envisioning interviews conducted on airplanes and around the world. Before wrapping up, Memphys treats listeners to an impromptu song and his signature beatboxing finale.
Listen in for a dose of childhood wisdom that might just change your perspective on the simple joys of everyday life. Sometimes our youngest voices have the most important things to say.
So welcome to another edition of GW Unspoken Connect Beyond the Plan. And I'm here on behalf of EngageU and I've got my little mate back Memphis how are you? Good, Very good Mate it's great picking you up from school. Today it was raining.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2And then you walked straight past me. You didn't know who I was.
Speaker 1I knew who you were, like I literally saw you, but you didn't notice me.
Speaker 2Hang on, I don't think that's true, because you walked straight past me and I peeped on Beep, beep, beep, beep and you looked back and went, ah, and then you hopped in the car, that's because I heard you. Yes.
Speaker 1Do you know where we are Inside a library Northgate library right now doing a studio?
Speaker 2Yes, yeah, it's called the Digital Studio at North Lakes.
Speaker 1Nice.
Speaker 2And we've battled traffic. We've had a healthy afternoon tea, haven't we? Yeah, yeah, what kind of healthy things do we have for afternoon tea? A salad donut.
Speaker 1No, no, no, no, I don't even eat salad.
Speaker 2Oh my gosh.
Speaker 1And I don't eat and my mum doesn't really pack me anything healthy For salad. Oh yeah, Not really healthy in my lunchbox.
Speaker 2Well, I've been like mum today, because I haven't given you a very healthy afternoon tea, have I? Although you do have something? Banana. Was it like real banana?
Speaker 1It had like banana in it and I know somebody had strawberry in it.
Speaker 2So we really had fruit, haven't we? You had banana milkshake and I've had strawberry milkshake, yeah, and then you went crazy in the playground, was it? Yeah, scary, going all the way up the top.
Speaker 1Yeah, it was pretty scary, it was like three levels. Yeah, three levels just to get down the slide. And there's even not like even a doorway to get to the slide. You have to like climb through the net, through like the circle it just starts, you go straight in.
Speaker 2I know it's not the circle, it just starts. You go straight in.
Speaker 1I know it's not a circle, it's like the little rope thing like into, like a square and then like you have to climb through. But luckily for me I can climb through.
Speaker 2You did a good job. You went there three times. I think you did three at the end.
Speaker 1Yeah, I think it was three. Was it quick? Was the?
Speaker 2slide fast. Yeah, actually think it was three, was it?
Speaker 1quick? Was the slide fast? Yeah, actually pretty fast. Yeah, pretty fast. But without shoes on I reckon that's going to be pretty fast. But I had my shoes on when I was going down it.
Speaker 2So you put down for like weeks to slow yourself down.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Well, I couldn't see you go down the slide because it was all enclosed, but I could hear you at different parts and you were screaming out where best you were. It, but I could hear you at different parts and you were screaming out where best you were. It was so funny. I went yep, he's there, he's there. And then you came out the bottom so I knew where you were.
Speaker 1And then we had little birds eating our donuts. Yeah, how dare they? Yeah, but those birds were only hungry.
Speaker 2They were hungry.
Speaker 1Yeah, they were hungry.
Speaker 2Now tell me. I haven't seen you for nearly a week, so what stood out to you last week? If you can think back and remember what's something that you've really enjoyed last week, since last time I saw you and we talked on the podcast?
Speaker 1Last week. I really loved doing the podcast with you on Friday.
Speaker 2Good memory, and today is.
Speaker 1Thursday.
Speaker 2Ah, yes, it's not quite a week and we're in a different studio. Yeah, how good are these library studios? It's so good in here, isn't it?
Speaker 1I know there's like a table in the middle of the room, another laptop over there, a green screen behind me.
Speaker 2Whiteboard.
Speaker 1Yeah, whiteboard there's a whiteboard over there. Oh yeah, there is a whiteboard.
Speaker 2And guess what else.
Speaker 1What.
Speaker 2Something freaky happens here. I forget to tell people. Sometimes we might be in the middle of a conversation, but the big fluoro lights are on a timer, so suddenly it'll just go really dark and you might be halfway through a conversation and you go. What's going on? I should have told you that before.
Speaker 1So if it starts going dark.
Podcasting Joy and Shoutouts
Speaker 2It's normal. It just yeah, it works with movement. It's like motion sensors somewhere. It works with movement. It's like motion sensors somewhere. So you enjoyed the podcast last night. What do you like about podcasting? Because you've been on a couple of podcasts with me and you're really good at it. So what do you like about it? Why is it fun?
Speaker 1It's fun because I get to tell everything about me to you and I get to say how my life is.
Speaker 2Yeah and I'm really interested in that. And guess who else is interested in it?
Speaker 1What.
Speaker 2Everyone who listens to you on Spotify. So I know that you said your parents heard the last podcast. We did, but I edited it and I uploaded it to Spotify last night.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2And I sent it through to mum late last night just through a text message, so she's got the link. And then she straight away said what a cutie you are. She said how awesome it was because you said lovely things about your parents too, which I like hearing. Yeah, yeah, they're good people, aren't they?
Speaker 1Yeah, they are good people, they look after you. Yeah, so how about we?
Speaker 2Is there someone you want to do a shout-out to today? Is there someone else you want to say hello to on the podcast today? One of your friends?
Speaker 1I don't really know. I don't really know, but I can just say right now there's no one outside the door that I'm going to shout out that they've become men. No one's standing right next to me.
Speaker 2I meant. A shout-out means hello to someone who might be listening to this, who might be your friends or relatives.
Speaker 1Oh yeah yeah, I know what that is. I don't really know who to shout out to, so I'm just going to say I'm giving the shout out to all my friends out there, that let me play with them and I hope they live a good life.
Speaker 2Oh, that's lovely. That's a nice thought isn't it. There's lots of people who don't say that, though they worry about themselves, not other people. But you always, when I talk to you, you often think about other people. It's such an important skill, it's really good.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's good. And what did you do on the ECCA day? You didn't go to the ECCA, did you?
Speaker 1Yeah, I didn't.
Speaker 2No, we didn't no no, have you ever been to the ECCA?

Speaker 2Plenty of the rides, okay, all right, yeah, all right, ready for some quickfire questions? We're going to ask you Rapid questions.
Speaker 1Like what job am I going to have when I grow up? All different things like that.
Speaker 2All different things like that. You ready, yep, but this is the deal. This is a part of this. This is a game, uh-huh, you have to answer it as fast as you can. So the first thing that comes to your mind, you have to say it Okay, okay. Hopefully there's no swearing, so we'll see how we go, okay ready. Here we go.

Speaker 1before. No, are you learning?
Speaker 2French, no, german, yeah, german, I have never been there before.
Speaker 1No.
Speaker 2Aren't you learning French? No, German.
Speaker 1Yeah, german, I have never left Australia before. I have no idea what it's like, but I don't know if there's any YouTubers in Paris. I mean, I would like to go to Paris, but I could also actually like to go to America as well. Why?
Speaker 2There are big hamburgers over there.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Why America? That's a good answer, but what makes you want to go to America?

Speaker 1Yeah, yeah, yeah. When I grow up I might create like my own book that you can take off each YouTuber that you meet.
Speaker 2Oh, that's good, yeah, but in real life. In real life, yeah. Do you want to hear a little secret about goals?
Speaker 1What.
Speaker 2They reckon they only come true if you actually make a list and tick them off. So you're right on track. You can't just suddenly say, yeah, I'm going to see all the YouTubers, but when you actually write them down, your brain starts finding ways to make that happen. Can you take me with you? Ooh yeah, I can provide donuts and banana milkshakes for you. How does that sound? Good, good and meat with no veggies.
Speaker 1Does that sound good so far? And Coco Pops yeah, a little, but I'll bring you only because I want to do more podcasts.
Speaker 2We could do a podcast on the plane. How cool would that be?
Speaker 1On a plane.
Speaker 2We could do a mobile one.
Speaker 1When people can hear us bro.
Speaker 2Yeah, we can start interviewing everyone on the plane. We just get up, do it on the plane and just talk to them and put the podcast on and ask them questions. How cool would that be.
Speaker 1Yeah, ask everyone questions on the plane like, hey, where do you live? Hey, go to the literacy station.
Speaker 2You'd have to come up with a name. Memphis is something, memphis Moments, memphis Memories, I don't know something. A new podcast station just for you. Mg A new podcast station just for you, MG.
Speaker 1What does that stand for Memphis? And well, no, MAG.
Speaker 2Memphis and Gary.

Speaker 2No, no, no, the MAG podcast.
Speaker 1How about MAG? So just M-A-G, if they say it fast enough without the full stop.

Speaker 1Second break.
Speaker 2Second break. Is second break longer than first break?
Speaker 1Yeah, longer, longer, longer.
Speaker 2All right, a couple more questions before we finish up today.
Speaker 1Is Memphis going to give us a bit of a rap today? Well, not a rap, but maybe a song.
Speaker 2Yes, please, oh, but I've got one more question before that. What Best thing about home at the moment?
Speaker 1We're talking about school and I know you love your parents. Best thing about home at the moment being with my family.
Speaker 2Just being there, being part of your family. Yeah, I love that. I love how you respect your family. It's so lovely. Yeah, alright, are we going to get a song? Because you usually said you have to write down. We haven't got any paint and paper again today.
Speaker 1I know you haven't bring it. How could you I?
Speaker 2thought you could do it at lunchtime. Start writing it down and ready to go.
Speaker 1No, you had no, no, no, no, I would have wrote it in here.
Speaker 2My name is Mem. I've got a friend named Ben. I see him at 10. What I don't know.
Speaker 1I'm just having a go, so you really want me to give you a song.
Speaker 2I think we should try it, because you're good at this After I did a song.
Speaker 1is that it?
Speaker 2Up to you. Do you want to talk about anything else?
Speaker 1No, not really.
Speaker 2I want to show you how we actually edit this podcast and put it straight on Spotify.
Speaker 1Yeah, and I know we'll have time after I'm done singing. Oh, unless you do a 10-minute song. No, not a 10-minute song, but after I'm done singing this short song, then, after you show me Spotify, we'll have like five minutes left, so that will be enough time. Okay, five minutes left, so there will be enough time. Once upon a time I was a little boy. What I was going? Well, yeah, hold on. Once I was seven years old, I was lonely and I Wait.
Speaker 2Had some macaroni. No, no, it's not the words.
Speaker 1Once I was seven years old and I was lonely and I never had any friends. But one time Somebody came up to me and said if you wanna be friends? And I said yes, said yes, and we played together. If you want to be friends? And I said yes, said yes, and we play together every day.
Speaker 2Yeah, oh, yes, high five. That was good. Can we end it with a beatbox? Oh, you like finishing with a beatbox? All right, so nothing else. You want to talk about Nothing else. Happy tomorrow's Friday, yeah, your favourite day of the week, yeah, all right. Well done today. Spoke well again.
