gwunspoken - Beyond the Plan

Milkshakes, Playgrounds, and Podcasting with Memphys

Garry

Meet Memphy, our delightful young guest who returns to share his unique perspective on life, friendship, and future dreams. Recorded in the Digital Studio at North Lakes Library, this conversation beautifully captures the unfiltered wisdom that can only come from a child's point of view.

The episode begins with Memphys recounting playground adventures—scaling a three-level climbing structure to reach an exciting slide while battling hungry birds determined to steal their afternoon snack. When asked why he enjoys podcasting, Memphys thoughtfully explains that he loves sharing about himself and his life, demonstrating remarkable self-awareness for his age.

What truly shines throughout this conversation is Memphys's natural empathy. Given the opportunity to send a message to listeners, he offers a heartfelt shoutout "to all my friends out there that let me play with them," wishing them all "a good life." This beautiful moment reveals his capacity to think beyond himself—a quality Garry rightfully celebrates.

Our rapid-fire question session uncovers Memphys's preferences (banana milkshakes reign supreme), dreams (visiting Paris and America to meet his favourite YouTubers), and values. When asked about the best thing about home, his immediate response—"being with my family"—serves as a touching reminder of what truly matters in life.

The conversation evolves into playful plans for a future podcast series called "MAG" (Memphys And Garry), with Memphys envisioning interviews conducted on airplanes and around the world. Before wrapping up, Memphys treats listeners to an impromptu song and his signature beatboxing finale.

Listen in for a dose of childhood wisdom that might just change your perspective on the simple joys of everyday life. Sometimes our youngest voices have the most important things to say.

Speaker 2:

So welcome to another edition of GW Unspoken Connect Beyond the Plan. And I'm here on behalf of EngageU and I've got my little mate back Memphis how are you? Good, Very good Mate it's great picking you up from school. Today it was raining.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

And then you walked straight past me. You didn't know who I was.

Speaker 1:

I knew who you were, like I literally saw you, but you didn't notice me.

Speaker 2:

Hang on, I don't think that's true, because you walked straight past me and I peeped on Beep, beep, beep, beep and you looked back and went, ah, and then you hopped in the car, that's because I heard you. Yes.

Speaker 1:

Do you know where we are Inside a library Northgate library right now doing a studio?

Speaker 2:

Yes, yeah, it's called the Digital Studio at North Lakes.

Speaker 1:

Nice.

Speaker 2:

And we've battled traffic. We've had a healthy afternoon tea, haven't we? Yeah, yeah, what kind of healthy things do we have for afternoon tea? A salad donut.

Speaker 1:

No, no, no, no, I don't even eat salad.

Speaker 2:

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1:

And I don't eat and my mum doesn't really pack me anything healthy For salad. Oh yeah, Not really healthy in my lunchbox.

Speaker 2:

Well, I've been like mum today, because I haven't given you a very healthy afternoon tea, have I? Although you do have something? Banana. Was it like real banana?

Speaker 1:

It had like banana in it and I know somebody had strawberry in it.

Speaker 2:

So we really had fruit, haven't we? You had banana milkshake and I've had strawberry milkshake, yeah, and then you went crazy in the playground, was it? Yeah, scary, going all the way up the top.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it was pretty scary, it was like three levels. Yeah, three levels just to get down the slide. And there's even not like even a doorway to get to the slide. You have to like climb through the net, through like the circle it just starts, you go straight in.

Speaker 2:

I know it's not the circle, it just starts. You go straight in.

Speaker 1:

I know it's not a circle, it's like the little rope thing like into, like a square and then like you have to climb through. But luckily for me I can climb through.

Speaker 2:

You did a good job. You went there three times. I think you did three at the end.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I think it was three. Was it quick? Was the?

Speaker 2:

slide fast. Yeah, actually think it was three, was it?

Speaker 1:

quick? Was the slide fast? Yeah, actually pretty fast. Yeah, pretty fast. But without shoes on I reckon that's going to be pretty fast. But I had my shoes on when I was going down it.

Speaker 2:

So you put down for like weeks to slow yourself down.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Well, I couldn't see you go down the slide because it was all enclosed, but I could hear you at different parts and you were screaming out where best you were. It, but I could hear you at different parts and you were screaming out where best you were. It was so funny. I went yep, he's there, he's there. And then you came out the bottom so I knew where you were.

Speaker 1:

And then we had little birds eating our donuts. Yeah, how dare they? Yeah, but those birds were only hungry.

Speaker 2:

They were hungry.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, they were hungry.

Speaker 2:

Now tell me. I haven't seen you for nearly a week, so what stood out to you last week? If you can think back and remember what's something that you've really enjoyed last week, since last time I saw you and we talked on the podcast?

Speaker 1:

Last week. I really loved doing the podcast with you on Friday.

Speaker 2:

Good memory, and today is.

Speaker 1:

Thursday.

Speaker 2:

Ah, yes, it's not quite a week and we're in a different studio. Yeah, how good are these library studios? It's so good in here, isn't it?

Speaker 1:

I know there's like a table in the middle of the room, another laptop over there, a green screen behind me.

Speaker 2:

Whiteboard.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, whiteboard there's a whiteboard over there. Oh yeah, there is a whiteboard.

Speaker 2:

And guess what else.

Speaker 1:

What.

Speaker 2:

Something freaky happens here. I forget to tell people. Sometimes we might be in the middle of a conversation, but the big fluoro lights are on a timer, so suddenly it'll just go really dark and you might be halfway through a conversation and you go. What's going on? I should have told you that before.

Speaker 1:

So if it starts going dark.

Speaker 2:

It's normal. It just yeah, it works with movement. It's like motion sensors somewhere. It works with movement. It's like motion sensors somewhere. So you enjoyed the podcast last night. What do you like about podcasting? Because you've been on a couple of podcasts with me and you're really good at it. So what do you like about it? Why is it fun?

Speaker 1:

It's fun because I get to tell everything about me to you and I get to say how my life is.

Speaker 2:

Yeah and I'm really interested in that. And guess who else is interested in it?

Speaker 1:

What.

Speaker 2:

Everyone who listens to you on Spotify. So I know that you said your parents heard the last podcast. We did, but I edited it and I uploaded it to Spotify last night.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

And I sent it through to mum late last night just through a text message, so she's got the link. And then she straight away said what a cutie you are. She said how awesome it was because you said lovely things about your parents too, which I like hearing. Yeah, yeah, they're good people, aren't they?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, they are good people, they look after you. Yeah, so how about we?

Speaker 2:

Is there someone you want to do a shout-out to today? Is there someone else you want to say hello to on the podcast today? One of your friends?

Speaker 1:

I don't really know. I don't really know, but I can just say right now there's no one outside the door that I'm going to shout out that they've become men. No one's standing right next to me.

Speaker 2:

I meant. A shout-out means hello to someone who might be listening to this, who might be your friends or relatives.

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah yeah, I know what that is. I don't really know who to shout out to, so I'm just going to say I'm giving the shout out to all my friends out there, that let me play with them and I hope they live a good life.

Speaker 2:

Oh, that's lovely. That's a nice thought isn't it. There's lots of people who don't say that, though they worry about themselves, not other people. But you always, when I talk to you, you often think about other people. It's such an important skill, it's really good.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's good. And what did you do on the ECCA day? You didn't go to the ECCA, did you?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I didn't.

Speaker 2:

No, we didn't no no, have you ever been to the ECCA?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I have, I have yeah.

Speaker 2:

Did you look at the animals and stuff? Did you get show bags? Go on rides.

Speaker 1:

I went on the show bags. I might have seen the animals. I can't quite remember, yeah, and I went on.

Speaker 2:

Plenty of the rides, okay, all right, yeah, all right, ready for some quickfire questions? We're going to ask you Rapid questions.

Speaker 1:

Like what job am I going to have when I grow up? All different things like that.

Speaker 2:

All different things like that. You ready, yep, but this is the deal. This is a part of this. This is a game, uh-huh, you have to answer it as fast as you can. So the first thing that comes to your mind, you have to say it Okay, okay. Hopefully there's no swearing, so we'll see how we go, okay ready. Here we go.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 1:

I had a cat when I was young, named Bandit. I missed her very much Because I have no idea where she went. I had I had my only big dog Called Missy and he had cancer and then he passed away. So good and yeah, it's sad, isn't it? Because they become like a family member, don't they?

Speaker 1:

Damn.

Speaker 2:

That's a bit sad, isn't it?

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

All right, let's talk about something more happy.

Speaker 1:

Favourite subject at school is PE. Is that right, PE?

Speaker 2:

and media arts. That's right, Remember from last time. Do you have a favourite day of the week? It's going to be a very long podcast, isn't it Wait?

Speaker 1:

what was the question?

Speaker 2:

Um what's your favourite day of the week. Oh, um, All right.

Speaker 1:

next question Wednesday.

Speaker 2:

Middle of the week, Wednesday.

Speaker 1:

I don't know, friday Friday Friday, friday, friday's a good question, all right. What question Wednesday, middle of the week, wednesday, I don't know, friday Friday, friday, friday Friday's a good fiasco, all right.

Speaker 2:

What about this question? If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Paris, oh nice, have you been there?

Speaker 1:

before. No, are you learning?

Speaker 2:

French, no, german, yeah, german, I have never been there before.

Speaker 1:

Speaker 2:

Aren't you learning French? No, German.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, german, I have never left Australia before. I have no idea what it's like, but I don't know if there's any YouTubers in Paris. I mean, I would like to go to Paris, but I could also actually like to go to America as well. Why?

Speaker 2:

There are big hamburgers over there.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Why America? That's a good answer, but what makes you want to go to America?

Speaker 1:

There are some my like, there's some America. There's like some YouTubers that are like my favourite you want to meet the YouTubers. Yeah, I want to meet the YouTubers, like every YouTuber in the world. Yeah.

Speaker 2:

That's good, you've got a goal. I like that.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah, yeah. When I grow up I might create like my own book that you can take off each YouTuber that you meet.

Speaker 2:

Oh, that's good, yeah, but in real life. In real life, yeah. Do you want to hear a little secret about goals?

Speaker 1:

What.

Speaker 2:

They reckon they only come true if you actually make a list and tick them off. So you're right on track. You can't just suddenly say, yeah, I'm going to see all the YouTubers, but when you actually write them down, your brain starts finding ways to make that happen. Can you take me with you? Ooh yeah, I can provide donuts and banana milkshakes for you. How does that sound? Good, good and meat with no veggies.

Speaker 1:

Does that sound good so far? And Coco Pops yeah, a little, but I'll bring you only because I want to do more podcasts.

Speaker 2:

We could do a podcast on the plane. How cool would that be?

Speaker 1:

On a plane.

Speaker 2:

We could do a mobile one.

Speaker 1:

When people can hear us bro.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we can start interviewing everyone on the plane. We just get up, do it on the plane and just talk to them and put the podcast on and ask them questions. How cool would that be.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, ask everyone questions on the plane like, hey, where do you live? Hey, go to the literacy station.

Speaker 2:

You'd have to come up with a name. Memphis is something, memphis Moments, memphis Memories, I don't know something. A new podcast station just for you. Mg A new podcast station just for you, MG.

Speaker 1:

What does that stand for Memphis? And well, no, MAG.

Speaker 2:

Memphis and Gary.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, let's go. You said we got a first try, so it's called MAG M-A-G.

Speaker 2:

No, no, no, the MAG podcast.

Speaker 1:

How about MAG? So just M-A-G, if they say it fast enough without the full stop.

Speaker 2:

Oh, so they put it together. Just keep it separate letters.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, just keep it separate letters.

Speaker 2:

It's called an acronym where every letter stands for a word. I know I like that. Yeah Best thing about school at the moment the clock Okay.

Speaker 1:

No, no, no, that's not my favourite one. What was the question again?

Speaker 2:

What's the best thing about school at the moment? I've stumped him. I've stumped him, the legendary.

Speaker 1:

Memphis. Wait, did you just call me legendary yeah?

Speaker 2:

You're the legend. Usually you just answer questions like this. Today I think I've stumped you up today.

Speaker 1:

Second break.

Speaker 2:

Second break. Is second break longer than first break?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, longer, longer, longer.

Speaker 2:

All right, a couple more questions before we finish up today.

Speaker 1:

Is Memphis going to give us a bit of a rap today? Well, not a rap, but maybe a song.

Speaker 2:

Yes, please, oh, but I've got one more question before that. What Best thing about home at the moment?

Speaker 1:

We're talking about school and I know you love your parents. Best thing about home at the moment being with my family.

Speaker 2:

Just being there, being part of your family. Yeah, I love that. I love how you respect your family. It's so lovely. Yeah, alright, are we going to get a song? Because you usually said you have to write down. We haven't got any paint and paper again today.

Speaker 1:

I know you haven't bring it. How could you I?

Speaker 2:

thought you could do it at lunchtime. Start writing it down and ready to go.

Speaker 1:

No, you had no, no, no, no, I would have wrote it in here.

Speaker 2:

My name is Mem. I've got a friend named Ben. I see him at 10. What I don't know.

Speaker 1:

I'm just having a go, so you really want me to give you a song.

Speaker 2:

I think we should try it, because you're good at this After I did a song.

Speaker 1:

is that it?

Speaker 2:

Up to you. Do you want to talk about anything else?

Speaker 1:

No, not really.

Speaker 2:

I want to show you how we actually edit this podcast and put it straight on Spotify.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and I know we'll have time after I'm done singing. Oh, unless you do a 10-minute song. No, not a 10-minute song, but after I'm done singing this short song, then, after you show me Spotify, we'll have like five minutes left, so that will be enough time. Okay, five minutes left, so there will be enough time. Once upon a time I was a little boy. What I was going? Well, yeah, hold on. Once I was seven years old, I was lonely and I Wait.

Speaker 2:

Had some macaroni. No, no, it's not the words.

Speaker 1:

Once I was seven years old and I was lonely and I never had any friends. But one time Somebody came up to me and said if you wanna be friends? And I said yes, said yes, and we played together. If you want to be friends? And I said yes, said yes, and we play together every day.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, oh, yes, high five. That was good. Can we end it with a beatbox? Oh, you like finishing with a beatbox? All right, so nothing else. You want to talk about Nothing else. Happy tomorrow's Friday, yeah, your favourite day of the week, yeah, all right. Well done today. Spoke well again. Okay, give us some beatboxing as we tune out from GW Unspoken Connect beyond the plan. On behalf of EngageU. We're going to finish off with Memphis doing some beatboxing. Bye, we'll see you next time.
