What Do Kids Value Most? Play, Pets, And The Joy Of Simple Days
A simple car ride turned into one of those chats you wish you could bottle. We picked up after school, grabbed Subway, wandered through Rebel Sport to inspect every basketball, and then hit the park—where a scrappy run of 18 kicks in a row felt like a trophy. Between laughs and questionable dad jokes, we peeled back what actually matters to a ten-year-old: second break at school, the thrill of PE and swimming, the magnetic pull of Minecraft and YouTube, and a deep love for sea turtles that needs no justification.
We talk about how play creates connection—tagging through a shopping centre, testing how long we can keep a ball alive, and turning small wins into big memories. The screen time conversation gets real without getting preachy, as he explains PvP, mobs, and the satisfaction of building worlds block by block. School isn’t just subjects; it’s the ritual of breaks, the joy of soccer, and that precious feeling of independence. There’s space for fears too—spiders, snakes, the vague “everything”—balanced by the security of five lively dogs at home and the kind of family noise that feels like love.
You’ll hear favourites that sketch a kid’s inner map—seven, green, chocolate mint ice cream, and Fanta edging out the milkshake. You’ll also hear how curiosity roams: turtles sunbathing on a log, squid and sharks joining the list, and the calm humour that makes scary creatures feel less so. It’s warm, messy, and honest—a reminder that the best conversations happen in the margins between school and home, snacks and dinner, questions and laughter.
If this made you smile, tap follow, share it with a mate who needs a wholesome listen, and leave a quick review to help others find the show. What was your favourite school break—and why?
Welcome up to Beyond the Plan. I've got my friend here, the little legend, Memphis with a Y. How are you? Good. Guess what? What? I'm Gary with a Y.
SPEAKER_01:Nice.
SPEAKER_00:That was a really bad start for the podcast, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Someone's been having some really bad dad jokes all day.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Who's that been? Is it been you?
SPEAKER_01:You.

SPEAKER_01:Um. Playing fee.
SPEAKER_00:We played tags at the shopping centre. I don't know if that was very professional, but that was I think you beat me. I could hardly catch you. You keep going on the other side of the shopping centre. I didn't know where you were.
SPEAKER_01:I know, guess what? I thought I almost lost you, but I didn't.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, well, you know what, I jumped out in front of someone and I thought it was yours because some old man walked past me. He's looked at me and went, oh whoops. So I've given him once a heart attack and I was a bit embarrassed, so. Um yeah, we've done a few things. What have we done today? What can you remember? What can you recall?
SPEAKER_01:Uh no. Come on. Um we started off by uh uh drinks, thank you. Drinks.
SPEAKER_00:Well I picked you up first from school.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Then we went to Cham Sai. Shamside? Yep. And you had some healthy snacks this afternoon.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, very.
SPEAKER_00:It was eh? Subway, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_01:Subway, yeah, subway.

SPEAKER_00:All of calcium. That's right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Totally.
SPEAKER_00:Um and then we went to Rebel Sport.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:We had a look at the basketballs and soccer balls there. I mean the basketballs, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:And then off to the park at your site.
SPEAKER_01:No, yeah.
SPEAKER_00:How many kicks in a row did we get?
SPEAKER_01:18.
SPEAKER_00:Freak, that was amazing. We keep getting like four, two, zero. I know. And then suddenly we've got like eighteen in a row.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:And then we played some basketball.
unknown:Oh.
SPEAKER_00:The time is just playing.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah?
SPEAKER_00:And now you're cooked. You're hot now.
SPEAKER_01:Very.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. So what's the plan for the rest of the evening? And you can't say YouTube will play games. What? What's the plan for the rest of the afternoon? You can't say YouTube will play games?

SPEAKER_01:You're a full grown adult.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, well, can I touch the bottom?
unknown:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, that's okay, I can just do that. I can pretend I'm swimming on the top and then just walk on the bottom. Yeah. Like a duck. Yeah. Okay. And um, let's see, I know things about Memphis. Memphis's favourite number is 6'7. Um.

SPEAKER_00:That's why. Because they're well rested.
SPEAKER_01:They live for 200 years, but they do nothing.
SPEAKER_00:You should not live for 200 years.
SPEAKER_01:I know. Just saw it once.
SPEAKER_00:Did you?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:How long do crocodiles last for? What? How long do crocodiles live for? Seven years? Someone tell me crocodiles may live uh die from starvation because they're so big they don't get enough food. No. That's what I reckon. Definitely wrong. Well, what might I die of? Um what's the most scariest creature in the world? Shark, crocodile, piranha? Uh is anything you're scared of? Like snakes or spiders or not?
SPEAKER_01:Uh I'm scared of like everything, really.

SPEAKER_00:How do you get to feed them all?
SPEAKER_01:Like 5.5, I say.
SPEAKER_00:Do they do they fight?
SPEAKER_01:No, I just play. Do they? I think they're f I each time they play, I think they're fighting. It turns out they're just playing.
SPEAKER_00:Because you've only got two hours, eh?
SPEAKER_01:What?
SPEAKER_00:Two hours?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Can I ask you a question about being silly?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
