Schoolyard Stroll

Garry
SPEAKER_02:

Where are we, mate?

SPEAKER_00:

Um walking.

SPEAKER_02:

But whereabouts are we?

SPEAKER_00:

School. School. We're going for a walk around school. We've been in this a while ago, haven't we?

unknown:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00:

Where are you going to take me? I'm on your hands.

SPEAKER_02:

You can take me wherever you like. Where are we going to go today?

SPEAKER_00:

Um right now to the oval. Oh great. No.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh no, then we're going to go.

SPEAKER_02:

Can you eat kids? We're going past a canteen. That looks amazing.

SPEAKER_00:

That's where the tuck shop is.

SPEAKER_02:

Have they got good food there? Yeah.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, that's where I get tuck shop.

SPEAKER_02:

Smells good. Alright, now how's your weekend?

SPEAKER_00:

That's my class.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, up there.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Nice.

SPEAKER_00:

That's the door that's opened.

SPEAKER_02:

Very good. And how's your weekend? Good. What did you do? Um think back, what did you do? With mum this weekend?

SPEAKER_00:

Yep. And I got my haircut.

SPEAKER_02:

It looks pretty pretty.

SPEAKER_00:

No. Actually, yeah. Do you like getting haircut? Yep.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah? Where'd you get that done?

SPEAKER_00:

Aspley. Aspley, nice.

SPEAKER_02:

Alright, I was a hairdresser nice.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

That's good. And what else do you do besides get a haircut? Did you go anywhere or do anything?

SPEAKER_00:

Yes. See? They're on the oval.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, yeah, on the oval. Some kids running on the oval here. It must be done to the mathematics, are there?

SPEAKER_00:

Some kids are running, some kids are walking. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. Alright, we go across the oval.

SPEAKER_00:

Yep.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh yes, please. So this is the top oval? This is where the big kids go most time.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, nice.

SPEAKER_00:

And even the city mirror. Sometimes they go here. Over there?

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, just around the buildings. They sit down at the tables and chairs.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Okay. And then who's allowed on this bottom oval? We're about to walk down the. I know people can't really they can hear us, but they can't see or we can see, so we have to explain it and describe it a fair bit.

SPEAKER_00:

Yep.

SPEAKER_02:

So we're going down to a second oval. Now, how old do you have to be on this oval again? What grades?

SPEAKER_00:

Three to one.

SPEAKER_02:

Okay. So grade one, two, one.

SPEAKER_00:

And that one's four, two, six.

SPEAKER_02:

Right. That one's four to six.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

What about the sevens or twelves?

SPEAKER_00:

They can go to that big tree.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. And are they playing the basketball courts here today? The basketball courts can be open. Some concreted courts here, they play there?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Cool. That's good. And so is this where you play soccer with your friends if you ever play soccer?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Nice. I should have bought my soccer ball. I should have got one in my car.

SPEAKER_00:

Oh now have you any swimming? Yep.

SPEAKER_02:

What day is swimming?

SPEAKER_00:

Tuesdays.

SPEAKER_02:

Ooh, when how much longer? How more weeks of swimming?

SPEAKER_00:

I don't know yet.

SPEAKER_02:

Don't know? Has it been good or not swimming?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Have you had to do laps or you do what's anything good? Learn to swim?

SPEAKER_00:

Yep.

SPEAKER_01:

Okay, cool.

SPEAKER_00:

When I still know how to swim.

SPEAKER_02:

You do know how to swim? Yeah. What's good? Well, this is a nice big green oval, isn't it?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Well, this is a bit of a bear patch here. What's happening here?

SPEAKER_00:

Oh. Someone dig the hole.

SPEAKER_02:

Did they?

unknown:

Yep.

SPEAKER_02:

It's all really dry, isn't it, compared to the other grass.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Look, there's a hole over here. This is no good if people are running around. Could spraying their ankle on this one, look.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, they can go like that.

SPEAKER_02:

That's a bit dangerous, isn't it? You can fill it up and the birdies that have a swimming that's so deep.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

unknown:

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_00:

You can even go like.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, roll your ankle. Oh, he's falling on the ground here showing me how this is gonna work, so you roll your ankle, it's not good, so then then you smack your face on the ground. Yeah. Maybe your teeth.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, they may turn out.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. So maybe we need to tell the grandson about it, don't we?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

We might tell them the speed that there's a hole there. And this is a running track when you have Athletics Day?

unknown:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

Have you had Athletics Day yet? No. No.

SPEAKER_02:

That might be this turn.

SPEAKER_01:

Last turn, isn't it?

unknown:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

Running races and stuff? Yep.

SPEAKER_02:

And then how far? Are you allowed to go all the way down the end down there?

SPEAKER_00:

Yep.

SPEAKER_02:

Alright, where are we going now? Are we gonna walk in that far?

SPEAKER_00:

Um we will that's probably it.

SPEAKER_02:

Alright, you're gonna go towards the preppies.

SPEAKER_00:

No.

SPEAKER_02:

Okay, so walk towards the preppies?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

This is where Ari did you go here when you were younger?

unknown:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Was that fun? Can you remember?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Did you have the same friends back then?

SPEAKER_00:

No.

SPEAKER_02:

No?

SPEAKER_00:

I wasn't friends with Lochlin.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, you weren't? Was he at school then?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, cool.

SPEAKER_00:

You stayed here for four years as well.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, cool. So you guys started at the same time. Prep year one, year two, year three.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

And guess what?

SPEAKER_00:

You're nearly finished year three. Yeah. It's nearly it's like five years.

SPEAKER_02:

It's November, and soon you'll be into year four.

SPEAKER_00:

And I can't even still see your go through the online side gate.

SPEAKER_02:

No.

SPEAKER_00:

Like I can only do that.

SPEAKER_02:

Now I have another question. Whereabouts is the year four classroom you'll be in next year?

SPEAKER_00:

I haven't been in it yet.

SPEAKER_02:

But is it near the year three one or is it a different place?

SPEAKER_00:

I don't know.

SPEAKER_02:

Don't know where the year fours are now?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Okay. Is there a big sandpit in here?

SPEAKER_00:

In there. In that. Oh, is that where it is? Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Where are all the preppies now? I can't see them.

SPEAKER_00:

In class.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, they're inside. What are they doing there? Can you remember what you did in there? Like painting and painting and colouring.

SPEAKER_00:

Colouring drawing?

SPEAKER_02:

Drawing.

SPEAKER_00:

Colouring in.

SPEAKER_02:

That's cool. It was a lot less stressful back then, wasn't it? Wasn't it wasn't as hard.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

It was good fun to socialise with people, get to know different people.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Different boys and girls in there. That's good.

SPEAKER_00:

Locke and me became friends.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, that's when you first started.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

And so you says end of prep year one, year two, this is your third year of being friends.

SPEAKER_00:

No. Actually, yes. Well, we weren't like hanging out that much in year two.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, weren't you?

SPEAKER_00:

Because we weren't in the same class.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, it does make a difference, doesn't it?

unknown:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

You usually become friends with people in the same class because you see them all the time.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Isn't it?

unknown:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

The thing is too, it's really important who you do hang around because you end up being like them. So you've got to hang around good people, positive people.

SPEAKER_00:

Someone actually Lockton actually doesn't gain that much.

SPEAKER_02:

Doesn't he?

SPEAKER_00:

That's good.

SPEAKER_02:

That's a good thing.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Now is this your playground here? Did you ever go on that?

SPEAKER_00:

Never. I got to do that, obviously.

unknown:

No.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, okay, you hang out there. Yeah, yeah. It seems strange they've got a hill here and stairs.

SPEAKER_00:

I can easily break stuff. Even when I'm going to do it.

SPEAKER_02:

The sketches, they're so cool. Very lucky to have those, aren't you? Like Superman breaking the sticks on his leg. Oh my goodness.

SPEAKER_00:

I don't even know if my leg was that strong.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, but guess what? This bone here in the thighs, no matter how big or small your thighs are, this is your biggest, strongest bone in the body.

SPEAKER_00:

I thought the jaws. No. Also the jaws. Jaws pretty strong, yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

But this is your biggest one. Because it's like a long bone.

SPEAKER_00:

Oh.

SPEAKER_02:

So the leg bone is called, it's a weird name, it's called femur.

SPEAKER_00:

What is a femur?

SPEAKER_02:

A femur is a bone that goes from here and goes all down there. That's the femur. Is that clasp in there?

SPEAKER_01:

We can't understand. You might be superman. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, what type of seven?

unknown:

Eight.

SPEAKER_00:

Eight nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, four, fourteen.

SPEAKER_01:

Seven, alright.

SPEAKER_00:

This is when we line up.

SPEAKER_02:

Line up for what?

SPEAKER_00:

For school. But I don't usually do that. I wait at class.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, okay, alright. I like this. It's like that fake grass, carpet grass.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, it used to be all ground.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, was it like all dirt?

SPEAKER_00:

Nope, it was all like concrete.

SPEAKER_02:

And that was it, just bare concrete. And they put this stuff on top. That's good. So you can actually run around and plow that.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

That's cool. Well, I was going for some running laps. He is very quick. Very quick. Where do you have speed from? The sketches, the shoes. Show me the bottom of those, please. Yeah, look at the grip. Fantastic. That's so good.

SPEAKER_00:

And you know how my old shoes used to go like squeaky.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, squeaky. And they're better. There's only one thing wrong with this kind of stuff is carpet grass. Because when you fall on it, you get carpet burn and it really hurts. Yeah. But it'd be better than concrete, wouldn't it? Like I'd rather fall on this grass than that concrete next to it. Look.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, this is what it this is what it was when the grass wasn't there.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, so this is just all concrete all right.

SPEAKER_00:

Except for this numbers.

SPEAKER_02:

Now we've got a handball court here. And we've got your times table here or your numbers table here.

SPEAKER_00:

Yep.

SPEAKER_02:

That's good. So your teachers ring out here sometimes?

SPEAKER_00:

Yep.

SPEAKER_02:

Yes? Go and stand on the number how old you are, okay. Try and find your number how old are you? Oh, he's looking around, he's stepping on number nine. Okay, I'm gonna step on how old I am, ready? There we go. No! What do you mean no? Twenty-three. Fine.

unknown:

Forty-three.

SPEAKER_02:

I'm like halfway to a hundred. Look, we're nearly got nearly in line. We're not changed. One, two, three gaps. One, two, three. Four gaps. Can we be in a straight line? This is how old I want to live to, one hundred.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

How old do you want to live to? A hundred as well? Ninety-nine. Well, that'll be a good innings. That'll be good. That's cool. I like it. So say goodbye to the podcast.
