A Quick Chat Before Laser Tag: Teamwork, Turtles, And Doing The Dishes
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The countdown to laser tag starts the moment Memphis hits the studio, and the energy never lets up. We’re plotting team tactics, laughing about vests that light up, and debating who’s got the better aim when the arena goes dark. What begins as a quick pre-game chat turns into a snapshot of a whole day: a Woolworths dash for patties and sausages, a detour to Gary’s place to meet the dogs, an unexpected moment with Chili the lizard, and a calm pause feeding turtles before the next burst of action.
Between the jokes and predictions, we hit on something that sticks—helping out even when it isn’t glamorous. After cooking, Memphis jumps in to load the dishwasher, despite its quirks, and we talk about why pitching in matters. No lectures, just a simple truth: nobody loves the chore, but everyone loves the feeling of being backed up. That small act says as much about teamwork as any game plan.
We carry that spirit into a friendly rivalry, setting terms for a Timezone high-score face-off and letting the banter fly. Memphis puts his name on the winner’s board early; I push back and ask the listeners to decide. It’s cheerful, scrappy, and very human—plans that shift, jokes that land, and a shared soundtrack to close it out, possibly in a language Memphis chooses on a whim.
If you love quick-hit stories with heart, moments with pets, and the kind of honest humour that comes from real connection, you’ll feel right at home. Welcome to an edition of Beyond the Plan, and I have a very special guest in the studio today. I've got Memphis. How are you, mate?
SPEAKER_01:Good.
SPEAKER_00:Mate, you look nice and comfy over there. They actually suit you being in that chair. You should be the host, maybe. You should be asking all the questions.
SPEAKER_01:I bet.
SPEAKER_00:No, let's not do that.
SPEAKER_01:What's your favourite colour? What what what who do you work for?
SPEAKER_00:Who do I work for?
SPEAKER_01:What's your job?
SPEAKER_00:Alright. We're having a very short podcast because we've got somewhere to go after. This is where we're going.
SPEAKER_01:Laser tag.
SPEAKER_00:What happens in laser tag? I've never done it. I actually haven't done it. Oh, maybe I've done it once before. Refresh my memory. What do you do in laser tag?
SPEAKER_01:Uh we have to shoot people with pretend lasers and you have to wear like a little like a little vest, isn't it? Your vest and as lights all over, and if you get shot, then uh it goes down and then you can't shoot anybody else. And but but when it but when it lights up, you can shoot or you're back in the game. Yeah, you're back in the game.
SPEAKER_00:Are we gonna go against each other or in the same team?
SPEAKER_01:Same team. Okay, if you're if you're able to choose teams at least.
SPEAKER_00:Are you a good shot or not? Like can you you good are you good at shooting?
SPEAKER_01:In GJ5, yes.
SPEAKER_00:Not GDA, I'm talking about laser tag.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Well, if you're on my team, I don't want to like someone who's not very good.
SPEAKER_01:I've played it before. I've played laser tag before.
SPEAKER_00:With who?
SPEAKER_01:Uh myself. Did you? I'd actually know with my sister, Ebony.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, that's cool. Were you against each other or on the same team?
SPEAKER_01:Same team, I think.
SPEAKER_00:Okay, cool. Well, we're gonna do a really short podcast. So just before we do go already, let's talk about some things that we've done already together. Can you think from the start?
SPEAKER_01:Um we've I picked you up and then where'd we go?
SPEAKER_00:He's thinking yeah, I like that.
SPEAKER_01:Woolworths.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, cold.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, we went to no woolworths, it was Woolworths. We went to Woolworths, uh, then we went to Whoa, whoa, whoa, what do we got?
SPEAKER_00:What do we buy Woolworths?
SPEAKER_01:Oh we've got meet patties, sausages.
SPEAKER_00:Yep.
SPEAKER_01:Then we went to Gary's house. I played with his two dogs, then I played with the lizard. Chili, yeah. Chili chili, and then we chili chungas, or no, chili chungus. So chili chili, and then um we went to see the turtles, and um I was able to feed them, and then we came back. It was a lot long and stressful. I had to make Gary run every every mile.
SPEAKER_00:And um What do you mean it's long and stressful?
SPEAKER_01:Then we are uh in back in his house. Uh, had a caramel chocolate, and then we are recording this right now, and then after we're going to lose a tag and time zone.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, if we get some time, hopefully we will. And we also ate the patties and half a sausage. And there's something else you did there, but you probably don't want to tell your mum about, but I was very proud of it about.
SPEAKER_01:I forgot what it was.
SPEAKER_00:You helped me clean up and load the dishwasher. And I said, you should do that at home. And you went, no. I said, I'm gonna tell your mum you can do it. No. It's actually good to help others. I was really proud of you doing that.
SPEAKER_01:I know, it's just I don't. I know it's just my mum's dishwasher. Let's just say to um kind of need an repair. Okay, whatever. You need a repair, doesn't it? Yeah, like I don't know.
SPEAKER_00:It still works, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yeah. No never mind. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Okay, but the point of that is that I was proud of you, and no one likes really to no one goes, yes, can I do the dishwasher? That'll be fun. Can we do it for six hours? Like no one loves doing it. Oh, six seven. But at the end of the day, it helps someone else out. That's a good thing to do.
SPEAKER_01:And I also want to say two words. Two words at the end of this podcast.
SPEAKER_00:It's not six seven.
SPEAKER_01:It's not six seven.
SPEAKER_00:Okay, cool.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, but two words at the end of this podcast. And yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Okay, so if we have time today and we do time zone at the end, are we gonna have a competition to see who gets the most points?
SPEAKER_01:Yes.
SPEAKER_00:And who will win that? Tell everyone now, because then tonight when you're asleep, I'll actually tell them the truth. Who's gonna actually win tonight today?
SPEAKER_01:Bro, you already know it. It's my boy myself.
SPEAKER_00:Oh I thought you were gonna say my boy Gary. No.
SPEAKER_01:It's me, buddy.
SPEAKER_00:Alright, you're gonna bring that on. Alright, now before we go, are you gonna do any singing before we finish off? Any anything to finish off?
SPEAKER_01:Uh first I'm gonna say my two words and then probably singing. Um here's my two words. Six! Oh, you lied.
SPEAKER_00:You did say isn't that going out now? Isn't everyone sick of six seven?
SPEAKER_01:I don't know, but so by the way.
SPEAKER_00:Like, this is unspoken, go for it. Six seven security. I'm gonna laser tag you now.
SPEAKER_01:Are we gonna are we gonna end it here or are you gonna sing anything before we go?
SPEAKER_00:Okay, we're gonna hop in the car. I'm gonna get you to choose a playlist. Will you play sodopop?
SPEAKER_01:Maybe.
SPEAKER_00:In English this time. Not German or Spanish or Italiano.
SPEAKER_01:I'll probably do a different language.
SPEAKER_00:Okay. Um, before we go, do you want to shout out to anybody who's listening? Do you want to say hello to somebody?
unknown:No, no, really, no.
SPEAKER_00:Not mum, dad, sisters.
SPEAKER_01:No, I did that last time.
SPEAKER_00:Oh. So you're not gonna say hello. Don't feel bad.
SPEAKER_01:I'm feeling bad, it's just I don't want to do it.
SPEAKER_00:No, no, don't feel bad. Don't don't keep staying here feeling bad about it. Okay, you ready? The music's on, and we may be lucky enough to have some of Memphis's amazing singing. Thanks for coming in the podcast or in the studio and having a podcast.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, actually, I'm gonna base my singing off of the thing.
