How Do We Learn Courage From Play, Banter, And A Little Physics?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Ever laughed your way into bravery? That’s the energy today as we spar over Turkish Delight, swap theme park war stories and hatch a plan to climb Wild Horse Mountain with snacks as our courage tokens. Oscar’s unfazed by heights and eager for action; I’m the self‑proclaimed scaredy‑cat trying to keep my cool while getting lovingly roasted by a fearless twelve‑year‑old. Between the banter, we uncover what really helps people face fear: small steps, honest check‑ins and rituals that make tough moments feel lighter.
We dig into why Air Force Cadets caught Oscar’s eye without the pressure of a pilot dream. It’s about hands‑on skills, drones, structure and the kind of steady challenge that grows confidence one session at a time. From ride queues to drop towers, we break down practical ways to manage nerves at theme parks: start with mid‑tier thrills, use playful exposure, share clear details about what to expect and pair each push with a reset. You’ll hear how a viewing platform and a bag of favourite chocolate can turn a panic spiral into a proud memory, and why humour is a surprisingly powerful tool for resilience.
There’s a quick science nugget too: how colour actually works. The Turkish Delight wrapper becomes our prop for explaining light absorption and reflection, a simple reminder that perception is about what bounces back. That lens applies to fear and fun alike—change the context, change the story, and the experience shifts. By the end, we’ve mapped a path for anyone who wants to feel braver without pretending to be fearless, and we’ve invited you into our candy feud with an open poll and open minds.
If you smiled, learned something or felt seen in your own fear of heights, tap follow, share this with a friend who needs a nudge and drop your vote on Turkish Delight. Your stories and ride tips help shape what we try next—what should we climb or ride together?
Welcome to another edition of Beyond the Plan. I've got my mate Oscar here. How are you? Good. Happy what's today? Tuesday? I don't know. Happy Happy Tuesday. I've been seen you for a while. Last time I think I saw you were you're about to go camping and you're on holidays.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01And you were doing lots of all these fun facts and made me feel very unintelligent. Is that a word? Can I say unintelligent?
SPEAKER_00Um check with Oxford Dictionary or whoever. Or whatever dictionary.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh, that's what's been now. We've had a bit of a conversation in the car on the way here to the podcast studio in North Lakes. But um so we might go over some ground we've already covered. In high school now?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Out of ten? Ten's awesome. Zero is hate it. What is it at the moment? On generally.
SPEAKER_00Um I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Give me a number. Is it five? Okay, so halfway. What was primary school out of ten?
SPEAKER_00Five.
SPEAKER_01So it's about the same. He's a bit distracted. He's treating his microphone like it's a little joystick going round round in here. If you start licking it like an ice cream, I'm I'm out. Okay.
SPEAKER_00I wouldn't do that. No, okay. I don't know about you.
SPEAKER_01Alright. Well, out of five, how you feeling? Five's awesome, one's terrible.
unknownGo.
SPEAKER_00Five. Nah. 2.5.
SPEAKER_01Only half. Only half.
SPEAKER_00I don't know.
School Vibes And Mood Check
SPEAKER_01Well, you're just talking talking all up on the way here. I was a bit worried about you. If people can remember Oscar on the podcast, which he speaks very well and articulates things very well, there's often lies that come out of his mouth, and it's often around the same theme. Well, it's often around the same theme we talk about. And probably I know the listeners are getting sick of hearing this theme from you and me, but I asked you again on the way here whether your taste has improved, and obviously it has not.
SPEAKER_00Turkish delights are the best.
SPEAKER_01I didn't actually mention Turkish delight, but that okay, that's what you think. That's what you think we're going to talk about.
SPEAKER_00I reckon, wait, is there a comment section on the podcast?
SPEAKER_01There can be, yes. Yes. Do you think we should have a poll of what people think?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Everyone should vote whether Turkish delights are good or not.
SPEAKER_01Okay, now you're you're a bit biased because you love Turkish light, but let's be fair, let's be honest. Do you think the results of the poll would be positive or they'd be negative based on the general population's taste?
SPEAKER_00They'll be good and they'll say Turkish delights are the best.
The Great Turkish Delight Debate
SPEAKER_01Okay, well, there you go, listeners. We're going to put a poll out and you can actually write some comments about um whether you think, and now go to GW Unspoken, beyond the plan, put your comments in there. What's your thoughts are for Turkish Delight? Me, I'm more of a like a coconut block, like a bounty kind of coconut guy, you know? They taste sweet, they're juicy. Turkish delights taste foul, jelly, the sound.
SPEAKER_00Turkish delights are the best.
SPEAKER_01Now, something else is happening, by the way. We just changed the focus for a second. We'll we will get back to this argument as we always do, but tell me a bit about Air Force Cadets. We talked a bit on the way over here. Is is your goal in life to actually be a fighter pilot or something like that? No. So why Air Force Cadets?
Air Force Cadets And First Flights
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I'm pretty sure it was because I'm pretty sure I'm pretty sure why I'm in Air Force Cadets is because my mum was scrolling along Facebook and saw a post that they put out saying that they were looking for new cadets.
SPEAKER_01Oh nice.
SPEAKER_00So and it looked interesting. You got to fly drones and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_01That's cool.
SPEAKER_00And I'm pretty sure that you're supposed to be able that you're supposed to go on a ride in a real fighter jet at some point. That's unbelievable.
SPEAKER_01Does that make you nervous?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01You're not scared of like scary rising, are you? No. We've talked about it before, yeah. So are you allowed to bring a friend or someone else on the Nah. I don't think so. Is it possible for you to ask if there's a friend? You can okay, right? I don't even know if I'd like that. I'm scared of height, so I don't even know if I'd like that. What are you laughing for? You know, you know, my daughter will hear this and she she laughs, but she says to me she wants to still take me on the Joker ride. I'm freaking out. Like I want to be a good dad and supporter, but I don't want to go on it. Can I fake a sicky and go, oh, I can't go on my hamstring, my legs too sore, I can't go on it. Would that work?
SPEAKER_00I reckon that since you're scared of heights, you should go on the joker ride and the dream world drop.
SPEAKER_01I've been on dream world drop a long time ago and I freaked out. I was like, I said, look at those cars in there, they look like matchbox cars. Look how tiny they are.
SPEAKER_00Have you tried climbing Mount Whitehorse?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_00What's it called Wild Horse? Is it Whitehorse or Wild Horse?
SPEAKER_01Wild Horse. Ice. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00No, I've got you tried climbing Mount Wildhorse.
SPEAKER_01I didn't know there was a Mount Wild Horse. I thought it was just the area, but I've done like Gun Gun and Mount Bewar and those ones. That you mean? Timber Gargan?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's it's right next to the Mount Wildhorse service station. Oh, okay. Which is next to the highway. Yeah, it's it's like it's basically just a mountain, but once you climb to the top, there's a viewing platform.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Where yeah, the cars look like batch boxes.
SPEAKER_01So you've done it before?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I've done it a couple of times.
SPEAKER_01Was it scary?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01Would you do it again?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Would you do it again with me just to make me look scared?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so you need to explain this. He's laughing over here. What is it? Well, like how old are you now?
SPEAKER_00Twelve.
SPEAKER_01When do you turn 13?
SPEAKER_00Later in the year.
Heights, Rides, And Parent Nerves
SPEAKER_01Okay. So my youngest daughter's 14, and she gets a real kick out of it. She wants to go on the Joker ride. Yes, because she's a thrill seeker, but more importantly, she wants to see her dad basically cry in tears of terror. What is it with you guys, you younger generation, wanting to see fear in adults?
SPEAKER_00To be fair, I just want ever to be scared. Anyway, it would be kind of funny. Like, wait, I'm pretty sure. Yeah, I reckon that you would be scared out of your mind.
SPEAKER_01Why does it make you smile when you say that? Like when you say, Why doesn't it? There should be empathy here going, geez, I hope you're alright. We should take out it, but I don't think you should because of it. Instead, you're laughing and jugging thinking it's a great idea. It's funny because on the way here I said, I've got a plan for you, and part of that plan was a mountain climber. You just laughed at me and said, No chance. But now on the podcast, you're going, Yeah, I'll take you there.
SPEAKER_00Um maybe I reckon that you should climb a mountain in your own time. Like it's not that scary.
SPEAKER_01How long does it take to get up Mount Wildhorse?
SPEAKER_00Um depends how fast you walk. Okay. Pretty sure one of the slowest times that I've done it. Actually, I wasn't recording time, so I don't know. But one of the slowest times was because my auntie was there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And well, it was one of my aunties.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Who was scared of heights?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I understand how she feels, yeah. Sounds like a great person. Yeah. Normal a normal person she sounds like. Very good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but that was climbing about it.
SPEAKER_01And she had to convince her coming up this you had to keep or just have to wait for her all the time because she'd want to rest.
SPEAKER_00No, she was walking backwards to not be as scared.
SPEAKER_01Wow. Wow. Was it packed? Was there many people on the mountain?
SPEAKER_00No, there's not that many people.
SPEAKER_01There's not many crazy people walking up mountains, is that what you're saying?
SPEAKER_00You don't have to be crazy to walk up a mountain.
SPEAKER_01Alright, well, look, I'll I'll take that challenge, but only if we do it together. And you can take your yucky Turkish delights. I'll take my yummy bounties to keep me comfortable and safe. My little comfort food. And maybe we can do that one time and go up a mountain. But there's no laughing. There's no laughing.
SPEAKER_00And if I have to stop I will be laughing the whole time.
SPEAKER_01If I have to stop on the way and have some tissues and wipe my eyes because of the humidity so hot and just happen to have sweat under my eyes, not tears of terror. It's not that high. Oh, so now I'm the odd one here. Once again, making me feel comfortable on the podcast. So mumma's not scared of heights, or dad? Or dad wouldn't be because dad does signs, doesn't he? Does dad climb up and put the signs on or he just designs the signs?
SPEAKER_00He designs the signs and then occasionally climbs up and puts them on.
SPEAKER_01Multi-talented. I could never do that. What about your sister? She must be scared of heights. No. So she's braver than me too.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And she's 26.
SPEAKER_00No.
Climbing Wild Horse Mountain
SPEAKER_01She's 10. Oh dear. Hey, when was the last time? When was the last time, Oscar, you actually went to um a theme park? How long ago?
SPEAKER_00I actually wait, do you class those water parks on the Gold Coast as theme park?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, probably, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because I remember. So I remember going to Was it White Waterworld? It was White Water World.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think. The one that's attached to Dream World.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But I went there literally on New Year's Eve.
SPEAKER_01Was it packed?
SPEAKER_00A bit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Was it freaking?
SPEAKER_00But that was the first time I'd been there, so I don't know what the lines are normally like.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Was it scary? No.
SPEAKER_00Have you ever been on the green room?
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00You need to go on it. It's super fun.
SPEAKER_01Okay, describe in your words what super fun means, and then describe in my words what that would actually look like. So go.
SPEAKER_00So basically, what the green room is, is so there's floaties that can hold up to four people on it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And if so you sit in the floaty and then they push you down, and it's like a giant tube that you go down into like this area where it's basically like a funnel that you've put upside that you put sideways, so you go up and down along the sides. I think I think I've already told you about it. Can you flip it? No.
SPEAKER_01Is it scary?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01Would it be scary for me? Probably not. What are you smiling for when you're saying that? You're trying to stitch me up again. I know what you're doing. You're gonna take me all these places, I'm gonna freak out. You'll be supporting me, not me supporting you. That's scary.
SPEAKER_00It's not that scary.
SPEAKER_01Alright, what about what about one of the other theme parks? Like Dream World, Sea World, Movie World. You been to any of those recently?
SPEAKER_00Yes. Last year I went to Dream World.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Did you go anyway? I say last year when it's only February now, so it wasn't that long ago. Yeah, but technically you're right. Yeah, it was sometime it was in December, I think. Sometime in December.
SPEAKER_01Before Santa.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Did you go on the steel type pen? Yes. Scary as hell. That's like a tennis.
SPEAKER_00It's actually super fun.
SPEAKER_01I think you missed up the words. It's super scary.
SPEAKER_00No, you should go on the steel type pan.
SPEAKER_01Repeat after me. Super scary. Go.
SPEAKER_00Super fun.
SPEAKER_01I went on it with my daughter again. He threw me under the bus. And she got us to the front of the line because we lined up for the motorbike one and we couldn't fit on because my legs were too tall. And so we waited an hour and a half to go on the motorbike ride. Oh yeah, that one's super fun. It's not at all scary. Well, I missed out. So we lined up for that and then lined up again 10 minutes later, try to get a different bike, wouldn't work. And they said, look, get a free ride of your choice. What do you want? And Emmy goes, steel Taipan. I went, choose again. She goes, No.
SPEAKER_00Wait, did you do the tail spin or just normal?
SPEAKER_01Normal.
SPEAKER_00I've never tried the tail spin.
SPEAKER_01Good. That shouldn't even be a thing. You should outlaw that kind of stuff.
SPEAKER_00It looks like it's fun.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so you're you're honestly talking on air here. This is like a non this is a non-lying podcast today. All right. Let's just keep it here. And I haven't lied yet. Well, you did earlier in the show. You did talk about Turkish Delight being the best.
SPEAKER_00Turkish delight is the best.
SPEAKER_01Tell me the truth. When you went on the steel type in, were you at least scared a little bit? No. This disturbs me. I don't know why, but it disturbs me.
SPEAKER_00Seriously, it's not scary. My dad thought it was a bit scary.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it's someone with common sense. Right.
Theme Parks On The Gold Coast
SPEAKER_00But it's not at all scary.
SPEAKER_01It's just Did your sister go on it?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01Did Mum go on it?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01They were scared.
SPEAKER_00They went on a different ride.
SPEAKER_01Was there any rides at Dreamwell that you actually did find scary?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01Did you go on the giant drop?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Was that scary?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01Which was scarier out of the giant drop? If you had to rate one, you said they're both not scary. If you had to rate one out of steel, type pen and giant drop, which is the scariest?
SPEAKER_00Neither. Wait, there's one ride that's not scary that I reckon you'd like. It was I forget what it was called, but it was ver it was basically there was a giant screen in front of you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And you would just sit on chairs and watch the screen, and it looked like you're doing stuff and going all over. I'm pretty sure they had two. It was all over Australia or all over Africa.
SPEAKER_01So that's nice. Just chill up to that. What's that other one that went with Emi and Imy goes, you'll be right with this one like high. I won't be scared this one up. Was it the claw that goes up high and then comes back down?
SPEAKER_00I haven't ridden that one because it was under construction when I went there.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00It was under maintenance, I think. Have you ridden the Gold Coaster?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that was funny.
SPEAKER_00Because it was so I went to Dream World twice.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like a month apart.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Both times it was closed. But then the next year, well, the same year it was, but literally like five hours away from the next year.
SPEAKER_01It opened up.
SPEAKER_00No, like there was people on it. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And you could see it. Yeah. That one didn't scare me, but I think because I went in a steel tie pan, and then we came back to the big claw one. I thought, oh, this will be easy. And I hate heights. And when the chairs went right up, Imogen just laughed, and I'm just like holding on like a sweating. I think I did the biggest bicep workout ever, just hanging on to like this. And she's like, that wasn't very scary, was it, Dad? And I could hardly talk. I was like, white. She just laughed again. Cruel. Kids can be so cruel. They can bullies. Oh my gosh. All right.
SPEAKER_00So that doesn't even look scary that wide.
SPEAKER_01Thank you for saying that and making me feel again inadequate. That's true. You're laughing a lot. I'm glad you're laughing a lot at me today. I'm gonna go get my own counselling after this. You know that, don't you? So 6 30, I'm gonna book into a counsellor and Gary, what's some of your problems? Well, I had a session with Oscar today and he just laughed at me the whole time because I was scared. Alright, so we worked out today that um I feel sorry for Oscar. I actually did treat him like I was a bit of a policeman today to catch up with him, hadn't seen him for a while. So I asked him about school, asked him about friendships, asked him about um cadets, asked him about holidays. What else to ask you about?
SPEAKER_00I forget.
SPEAKER_01It was a fair few, wasn't it? Fair few questions I was asking about. No, it was alright. But after this podcast, um, we're gonna go and uh check out the shops and have a little bit of a feed. And Oscar said that he wants to try and face his fears and try some um Turkish delight and see if you can get over the phobia he has about disgusting chocolates.
SPEAKER_00So we'll do Turkish delights are the best.
SPEAKER_01Every time we are together and we have a Turkish delight, I try and convince myself that they're nice, but it feels like they're all out of date because no one buys them.
SPEAKER_00Really? I you don't try and convince yourself. I'm pretty sure the last time you tried Turkish delights, you're fine with them. And then you just pretended that you hated them.
SPEAKER_01I don't, I don't.
SPEAKER_00I honestly everyone knows that you actually like Turkish Delights.
SPEAKER_01I'll tell you what I'd do. If there was a if there was a chocolate lineup, right? From there's all these chocolates, and you have to place them from say, say there's ten chocolates, from worst, number one, to ten being the best, I reckon Turkish Delight would come in for me number two. The only thing that's worse than that is like those old Jamaica or old gold, those rum and raisin dark chocolate things.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're terrible.
SPEAKER_01They're they're Turkish Delights is just a step up from that.
SPEAKER_00Turkish delights are the best.
SPEAKER_01So you'd have them at ten. Nine. Is there a chocolate that actually is better?
SPEAKER_00Yes. The marvelous crea the dairy milk marvelous creations.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so again, explain to me what what are they are they like a caramel? Are they a chocolate? What are they?
SPEAKER_00They're chocolate with inside like popping candy and lollies.
SPEAKER_01A mix?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, basically. And there's one more thing.
SPEAKER_01No, it's not jelly. There's jelly in there too, isn't there?
SPEAKER_00Maybe.
SPEAKER_01Look at you. You're obsessed. You're obsessed with it.
SPEAKER_00You should try them.
SPEAKER_01Oh. They're better than you think. But you said they might be only a Christmas thing, is that right? They might only be a Christmas thing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think that they're only out at Christmas times. Do you like if Cabby is listening to this, please say where to get them, not at Christmas time?
SPEAKER_01Do you know what would be really funny? It would be really cool, is if Turkish Delight became our sponsor. And then you could have a Turkish Delight while we actually did a podcast.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
Steel Taipan, Giant Drop, And Guts
SPEAKER_01And then at least Turkish Delight would have at least one customer. Like at least, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Nah. Thousands of people buy Turkish Delights.
SPEAKER_01Do you think we could give people free Turkish Delights on the show who come with us then?
SPEAKER_00Maybe.
SPEAKER_01Well, they'd probably only give it back to you, so you probably win-win.
SPEAKER_00Turkish Delights are the best, and everyone agrees with that, right?
SPEAKER_01We'll find out from the poll, won't we?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Um, tell me about before we wrap up, tell me about weekends and what what do you do on the weekends at the moment now? Schools back?
SPEAKER_00Nothing.
SPEAKER_01Nothing, okay. Oh, you're talking about holidays. Tell me tell explain this to me. Holidays you said boring. Why is that?
SPEAKER_00The school holidays are boring.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because you are literally doing completely nothing. You're basically just sitting there doing nothing.
SPEAKER_01So, in a way, school's okay in the fact that it gives you some kind of thing to do, a bit of structure, a bit of routine.
SPEAKER_00Like you're literally just sitting there not knowing what to do.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Alright. Do you have I might have asked you this before, but what this year being year seven, different teachers subjects. Do you have a favorite subject at the moment? Like I know it's only week two or three, but do you have a favourite subject at the moment?
SPEAKER_00Not really.
unknownNo?
SPEAKER_01I thought you'd be like science or biology or something like that.
SPEAKER_00To be fair, we only do science at this point science-wise.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00We don't do all the different subjects in science. Oh, okay. Just the simple basic science.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Before we go, do you have any fun facts before we leave? Um no. You did say something about a leaf. What color's a leaf?
SPEAKER_00IS. So technically, because light is every different colour, the w so technically when you see something that's a certain colour, like say a delicious Turkish delight wrapper.
SPEAKER_01There's no such thing like gallon yeah. Which is what? Reddish purple?
SPEAKER_00It's yellow, it's gold with purple with a purple bit. Yeah. So like when you see that, technically, because of the way that light works, all the light comes down and shines onto the Turkish delight wrapper. Yeah. And then where the purple bit is on it, all the light gets absorbed except for the purple light.
SPEAKER_01So it bounces back.
SPEAKER_00Technically, since purple is not a primary colour, technically the red and blue would bounce back.
SPEAKER_01So technically So why don't we see red and blue then?
SPEAKER_00Because it merges and makes purple.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_00So then that bounces back and hits your eyes. So that's the only reason you see colours the way they are.
SPEAKER_01So ocean, if I see the ocean's blue.
SPEAKER_00So technically, the Turkish delight wrapper would be every colour but purple in that spot that you see purple.
SPEAKER_01And so if the ocean's blue, yeah, it's every colour but blue. That's freaking me out. Are you are you playing with my brain again? Because I'm not very intelligent. Is it you play with my mind here, mate? Scaring me. Um, thanks for coming on the show. Any good jokes before we finish off?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I've got one. Do you want to hear it? Turkish Delight. That's the joke. That's a good one.
SPEAKER_00Turkish Delights are the best. And that's not a joke.
SPEAKER_01Well, people out there listening, put your poll in. Let us know how you go. We'll actually see whether we think that uh it is great to have you on the show, mate.
