Six months later, they charge you for another test that typically shows little improvement, perpetuating the treatment cycle.

What dental chains won't tell you is that these tests lack FDA approval for dental diagnostics. It sounds high tech, it sounds medical, it sounds like something you should trust, but I'm here to tell you it's just another tool in the corporate arsenal to scare you into opening your wallet. The AMMP-8 test claims to measure an enzyme linked to gum disease active matrix metalloproteinase 8, or AMMP8. The idea is, if your levels are elevated, you're in early periodontal trouble, even if your mouth looks and feels healthy. Corporate dental chains love this test why? Because it turns healthy patients, people with perfectly normal probe depths of 2 or 3 mm millimeters, into high-risk cases overnight. Suddenly, you're not just there for a cleaning, you're there for a full-blown periodontal treatment plan, scaling and route planning, medicated rinses, extra visits and, of course, extra billing. It's a beautiful upsell machine. Here's where it gets colder. The corporate dental chains often offer AMMP8 tests for free on your first visit. How generous, right Until six months later, when you come back and they charge you $30 for a retest and guess what? Your numbers probably won't have changed much. Because here's the kicker these tests they're not FDA approved for dentistry.

As of now, the American Dental Association itself notes that no saliva-based periodontal screening has formal FDA approval. But that doesn't stop corporate offices from using them. They wrap it in scientific language, they position it as preventative care. They use it as a weapon of fear. And if you think I'm exaggerating, let me tell you what we tried behind the scenes. We ran an AMMP8 test on the mouth rinse solution. No saliva, no patient, just the rinse. And it came back positive with a marker score of 13.
