The Powerful Healing Practice Most People Don’t Know (Parts Work)

What is Parts Work and how can it help heal your inner child and inner critic?
In Episode 14 of Our Life Is a Honeymoon, Tim and Amy explore Parts Work, a powerful healing approach used in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. Instead of seeing the mind as a single voice, Parts Work helps us recognize the different “parts” inside us- like our inner child, inner critic, or inner teenager — and learn how to understand them with compassion.
Tim and Amy share their personal experiences using Parts Work through meditation, therapy, and hypnotherapy, and how connecting with different parts of themselves has helped them process past experiences and find deeper emotional healing.
In this episode:
✨ What Parts Work actually is
✨ How Internal Family Systems (IFS) works
✨ Why your mind may feel like it has conflicting voices
✨ Healing your inner child through meditation and awareness
✨ Tim’s practice of sending love to past versions of himself
✨ Amy’s experience discovering Parts Work through hypnotherapy
✨ Tools that can help you explore Parts Work on your own
Parts Work can be incredibly powerful, but it’s important to approach emotional healing gently and with care.
Have you ever heard of Parts Work before?
Does the idea of different “parts” inside us resonate with you?

Hey everybody. Hello. Welcome back to Our Life as a Honeymoon. This is episode number 14. And today we're going to talk about something called parts work. Tim and I both practice many healing modalities, but I would say I can speak for both of us that this is one of the most healing. And something we really probably both just kind of learned about over the past few years. So for those that haven't heard of it, we want to make sure that you have this information. So that's what this episode will be all about.
SPEAKER_02That we know.
SPEAKER_00And together, we want to share that story with you.
SPEAKER_02As well as all of the practices we do to keep our relationship thriving.
SPEAKER_00Because to us, it feels like our life is a honeymoon.
SPEAKER_02We want that to be enjoyed for all of you. I'm Tim.
SPEAKER_00I'm Amy, and this is our podcast. This podcast is brought to you in part by Considine Homes, proudly serving your real estate needs in South Florida with honesty and integrity and offering trusted referral partnerships in all 50 states and beyond.
SPEAKER_02All right, so to start us off here with the whole parts work world, I thought I could define it as based off of Google Gemini.
SPEAKER_00Thank you, Google Gemini.
SPEAKER_02All right, so I have a little definition I'm just going to read. It says PartsWork is a psychotherapeutic approach, most notably internal family systems, also known as IFS, that treats the mind as a collection of sub-personalities or parts, rather than a single entity. It helps individuals identify, understand, and harmonize these often conflicting internal voices, such as an inner critic or an inner child, to reduce emotional distress, heal trauma, and create internal unity.
SPEAKER_00Thank you for that. Yes. So I would like to explain what that meant for anybody that is maybe still wondering a little bit.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's it's not split personalities. We'll start with that.
SPEAKER_00No, we do not have split personalities that we know of. I'll let you know. No, so so in layman's terms, um essentially we all have different parts of ourselves inside of us running the show. And a big one that probably most people have heard of is the inner child. And that inner child really does a lot of show running. Um, but there can be other other what's another part? Can you think of one off the top of your head?
SPEAKER_02Inner critic.
SPEAKER_00Well, that yeah, we said that one already.
SPEAKER_02Just an inner teenager?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. Inner teenager.
SPEAKER_02Still a child, but a little bit older.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So um there are I'm losing it. But we're gonna keep rolling. But there's just these these different facets of yourself that you can tune into. And if you're kind of feeling, you know, maybe maybe check in with each of one, each one of them and you know, assess how are how's this part feeling today? How's this piece feeling today? And when I know when I do that, it helps me if I'm feeling a little off, I it helps me to understand where it's coming from and it's a quick way to resolve it to feel better.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. So why don't you tell us your journey?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure. So I was first introduced to parts work from my fabulous hypnotherapist Justin Shiver. Shout out to Justin. Justin is amazing. He is located in Lake Works, Florida. I think he does virtual as well. And um, he's a life changer. I first went to him um because I had an issue with claustrophobia, because I didn't realize that hypnotherapists could do so much. I thought they were more like stop smoking, lose weight, don't freak out in an elevator anymore. And he did some crazy healing. One um session, and I was able to ride the skyliner. Disney, for anybody that doesn't know what that is, it's a very enclosed little capsule that you ride through the air in to get from one part of Disney World to another. And uh, so, anyways, that was very effective. But once you have one session with him, you just want to go back because he's the best. And I think um, Tim, can we put his contact information in the show notes?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, okay, perfect. So, anyways, Justin is the one who actually taught me about parts work during hypnotherapy. And um when I was under hypnosis, I was able to go back to different ages of myself and talk to them and just kind of check in and see how they were feeling. So I took everything from that session and I brought it home, and it's something that I do frequently during my own meditation time. How about you, Tim?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I have always been interested in learning about different different like self-help, self-development tips and tricks. So I've always listened to podcasts of all sorts, and they all are generally self-development based. I mean, not as much anymore, kind of shifted into like sports and other things and music podcasts.
SPEAKER_00You're very developed now, that's why. Yeah, you've done a lot of healing and you break.
SPEAKER_02So there I'm pretty sure there was a guy that was being interviewed, and he was, I guess, the creator of Parts work. His name was Richard Schwartz, and he uh developed the internal family systems model, I think, in the 80s. And and so I think he was being interviewed and he was talking about his program that he made, and I sought it out, and it was on this website called Sounds True, who also was the uh producer of my mindfulness meditation teacher certification program.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so they are just big into like programs of healing, and so I downloaded this thing, it was like $35, and it was like an eight-hour program where you listen to these things and you do these exercises, and I remember getting into it, and it's like draw the different parts, and it was like I was drawing these stick figures with like smiley faces, it just and then I life got busy and then it just kind of went into the in the background. Um when was that? Probably like 2021.
SPEAKER_00When we were together, yeah. I have no recollection of this. Did you share this?
SPEAKER_02Probably in brief, but it it wasn't really it's just you doing your own healing modalities, and yeah, yeah, you didn't bring up hydrostick figures. Well, yeah, I'm pretty sure it was within the last five or six years. But anyway, so I am seeing a therapist regularly, and we were working through childhood stuff, and he I think we tried EMDR, and that wasn't really doing it for me. And so he was like, All right, let's try another thing. And he was like, Have you heard of parts therapy? And I was like, Ah, a little bit. And so he got he'll got currently we're using it, and I'm working through just young parts, and uh he's kind of leading me through these guided exercises, and that's kind of that was it went from like just finding it in the world, and then my therapist brought it up, and now it's happening. And then again, I'll talk uh which we'll I'll kind of go into now how I am using it today. Uh similar to how I do in therapy, I'll during meditation, I'll really be grounded. Um we've talked about Amy and I will do long form meditations on the weekends, and that's usually when I have the time to do it. Uh, we have like a 90-minute where we're sitting together and just really being uh intentional about our spirituality practices, and so I will I'm just remembering, so it's it sounds crazy. My my parts work has kind of evolved over time. First, it was just I'm talking to my inner child, and he was actually like in my childhood home, like that's where he was located. And so eventually I took him out of there and then took him took him to a cottage in the woods. Uh, after watching this the newer Snow White movie, that's where that came from. We love Disney, yeah. We do, and so in the newer movie, which nobody seems to like, but I actually like a very good movie.
SPEAKER_00People are crazy.
SPEAKER_02I think people's standards are are like I don't know, it's like they want, I don't know what they want, but anyway, that's a different story for another day. So I have this beautiful cottage where my little inner child lives, and uh all these other kind of parts are now in there with them, and uh and so yeah, that's kind of like my hub of the inner inner children, and they all kind of coexist in there, and I'll check in on them during these longer form meditations. Um, and then this other thing I uh I'll talk about it just came to me naturally after doing loving-kindness meditation where I'll send positive vibes to different parts of myself, like, oh, my inner child needs love. I'll I'll send him like you know, I'll say, May you be safe, may you be happy, may you be healthy, may you live with ease to like the inner child. And then somehow I thought, like, oh, my current the current day of me needs that. And so, like, wait, let me the this other part needs it. Well, I'll make all these different parts need it. So why don't I just go through, you know, like I can't go through every part of me. So I'll I'll do like a system. So I do every five years, started at current day 40 and then worked back to 35. I thought about myself at age 35 and what I was doing, what I was feeling, and sending that version love and the people around me love, and then just working my way backwards up until you know birth. And then I thought about my family when life was happening at that time and just sending them love. It was a pretty like just it just kind of came out of nowhere, but ended up being a very like revelatory experience to just it was it's crazy. These things are free, and it's like it's like almost like therapy in a way. Um, and so that's something that really um really was powerful that I've kind of incorporated that I don't do every time, but if I have the time and I I really feel like I need it. And then this thing I actually just did last weekend that I want to add, um I was kind of feeling lost with my parts, and I I just said I was like, I went into my the cottage and I was like, who needs who needs attention right now? And then like a part came forward, and it was really like instead of forcing the work, I don't know, I just asked, like kind of asked myself, and then like my inner teenager came out and did it that way. So yeah, that's that's kind of all of my stuff.
SPEAKER_00I'm just gonna pause right here to say you are a beautiful, beautiful man. Thanks. This is so lovely. Oof, okay. I'm just really in love with you right now. I'm so grateful to have a partner that um just as such healing. You're you are have such a beautiful heart. Oh, I really love you. Oh, you're welcome. Um, okay, well, anywho, um hi. I'm just in love, Alan. Very happy to marry this man. Um, okay, so my we're you're all set. So my parts therapy, um the way that I do it or have done it has been a little different than Tim. Um when I was in hypnotherapy, I kind of identified a couple main parts. Um, so I have four main parts that I work with. Um, one is my higher self, which that I feel like you I don't have the same sort of check-in. It's more like, what do you want me to receive? But I still consider that the highest level of myself, my highest part. But then I have little Amy. I mean, these are not great crafted names. This is just what's come up in um the therapy sessions, and this is what I go with. So I have little Amy, I have regular Amy, that's me, and then future Amy. And um, so I just love being able to take time during meditation and just it's kind of funny. Tim, Tim has a cottage, and uh, my parts have always been in a cottage separate separate times, but um, you know, I hope hopefully one day we'll we'll live in a cottage in the woods together and it'll be so nice. But um, you know, so I also have a little cottage in the woods. I feel very safe. I grew up in the woods and I feel very safe in the woods. And um, you know, I'm meditating and um, you know, just checking in on little little Amy is the one that has needed the most healing. Um, and I'm happy to report she feels pretty good now. Um, but for a while, you know, she'd be sulky and you know, it's just what does she need? And then future Amy, well, she hasn't really had any stress yet because she's in the future, so she she's pretty chill. She's got her cafton, and you know, she's uh she's a magic, magic woman in the future. Um, and then regular Amy, she um many times has carried the weight of the world and a lot of stress and um just a lot of toxic feeling energy trying to keep everything together. So when I check in with each of them, but yeah, I mean it's not every day that these different parts are having issues. You know, some some days little Amy feels great. And if she doesn't, and if she's feeling uh like rejected and neglected, I have to say, what do you want? And I mean it might sound crazy, but she wants me to spend time with her. And so that means, okay, stop. It's very hard for me to do it because life just keeps chugging, but let's make a puzzle. Let's call like I get to be better at this. I got like some painting kits for Christmas that I get to work on. But even like when Tim and I go to Disney, like little Amy gets to play. I I think both of our little inner children, yeah, get to play together. And then um oh through all of this, I've really been able to be in touch with how regular Amy has had a lot of stress. And so I've really been working on the in the past, I mean my whole life, but uh making some some bigger changes in I'd say the last six months that are really um Tim was actually kind of the one that that suggested that maybe I check into looking at Workaholics Anonymous, and um that really pegs. And um so I've been reading up on that and and realizing I get to make some changes. So thank you very much, honey, for that. And uh, I've been gentler on me. And I have to say, like regular Amy just feels like that free-flowing hippie soul that she used to be a long time ago. So so I appreciate that nudge. And like you were mentioning um before, I think when you first heard of parts work, how it didn't resonate. And I think a few years ago you mentioned looking at Workaholics Anonymous, and I went to like one meeting online and I was like, no, but now the time sometimes you're not ready and then you're ready. Um, so, anyways, doing this parts work has helped immensely. And then um, I I'll end this part with um so Tim had shared with me how he did like the five. Well, I actually didn't realize you went backwards, so I just saw it zero, five, ten, fifteen. So I adopted that. When we have our 90-minute meditation spiritual time, like sometimes you get a little extra time on your hands to try try some new tricks. And so that actually has been really, really powerful. I think you're really on to something. And through that, very recently, as of last weekend, um, ooh, I ended up hitting um like 15-year-old me has a lot of trauma left. That um I think I had been so focused on little Amy, like, you know, five, seven, and then I went to 10. And she's good now. Like she feels safe, she's supported, she knows that I run the show and she feels good. But there are there are some uh real pain in 15-year-old me. And if I hadn't stopped to do that 5, 10, 15, I would have brushed right over that age. So um I actually made I made my next hypnotherapy session with Justin today, Justin Shiver, for anybody out there. And um, so that's something that I'm gonna work on with him in the next session. And then um maybe a month or two ago, um, it was, I think it was the first time I did that practice, and I realized 37, was it 30? Yeah, 37-year-old me had a lot of trauma that I had not worked through. And I mean, when these things come up, they're painful and you cry and it's heavy, but you get to work it out and and realize that you're safe now, and um it's just the most healing modality in the whole wide world. Uh it's my favorite. I love it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I guess we're mentioning the kind of the kind of like the intensity of it all. That's like a good disclaimer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Because this ain't light work, people.
SPEAKER_02Because, you know, we're not trained therapists, we're not, you know, we're not any of that, but we we are like we are uh you know lovers of the the the parts work, this kind of work, and so we we share it, but also like you know, be careful with it because you know, and I'll it'll actually lead me to this uh next kind of thing I want to talk about, or the resources, where I have a couple decks that I use, and I will show um the people watching, but also describe it. So this first one is called Inner Child Oracle by Amanda Lynn Isling. And I think she might be based out of uh South Florida. If I remember, really, I think like Melt the Melbourne area. I remember learning.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow, that's cool.
SPEAKER_02Um and she actually mentions in one of the maybe the beginning, just the same thing that I said, like this stuff gets heavy, and it's it's like important to be like if anything's feeling too much, not to like force it, force through it and and uh just be gentle. Uh but yeah, it's a 44-card deck that you you just kind of draw a card or multiple cards, however you want to do it, but it's just different exercises and uh just powerful readings about inner child topics.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm I'm just gonna cut you off there for a minute. So I think did I bought that for you as a gift?
SPEAKER_02Okay, I yeah.
SPEAKER_00I bought it for you as a gift, I bought it for Tim as a gift, and then he opened it, and I'm like, ooh, this is a good one. So I bought it for myself as a gift, too. So we actually both have that deck, and what I love about it is um, you know, you have a reading, you you you read what the card says, and then um it poses a question to you and it gives you a journaling prompt. And ooh, mama, those journaling prompts, if you actually take the time to do the writing, I mean, yeah, they they can be heavy, but we've stuffed, I think, as a I think all people. I mean, maybe if you grew up in your mom with a therapist or your dad was a therapist.
SPEAKER_02Some people, since your parents are therapist, you're gonna be like, Yeah, you might like reject it, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But like I I think everybody stuffs. There's pain that we go through and we just stuff it, and it can be a little hard when you journal it, but then just imagine releasing that, and that that pit and that heaviness is gone. Sometimes you have to revisit it, but like it lessens and it lessens and it lessens. So sorry to cut you off, but that that that deck is a gold mine.
SPEAKER_02Um, and the next thing I have here's another deck, it's called Interactive Cards.
SPEAKER_00And this one also purchased by me.
SPEAKER_02Amy bought me this one too. Here it is.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And these cards have no words on them, they're just pictures that are very, very, if you are, I don't know. I mean, if like maybe not everybody will be uh because I just know when I see these pictures, they are very uh like I don't want to say triggering, but they can be triggering. Like they're just if I feel like if I'm in the right place, like they can really invoke, evoke like powerful emotions.
SPEAKER_00Good and bad.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, good and bad. And it's I wouldn't even say bad, but just like painful or power or like healing. I don't know. You know what I mean? It's not necessarily I don't think it's bad, like just if I say Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah, I know what you mean. And then along with that, there's this book called Parts Work, and it's it's a companion to those cards, and it's uh by Tom Holmes, PhD. It's uh it's kind of like a welcome to parts work, uh, just a very easy to read book that uh I I learned about through the deck that Amy bought me. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, those are great tools. Um, so I don't have the interactive card. So they only say interactive cards. Is there more information? Who's the the author?
SPEAKER_02Uh interactive cards for parts work, drawings by Sharon Sgt. Eckstein and designed by Jane Eckstein.
SPEAKER_00Oh, those Ecksteins really went to town.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But they are both, uh not both, all three. Well, I I haven't looked at the workbook, so I can't speak on that, but it's from the same, the same it's not the same author. Oh. Sharon did the the illustrations, but then somebody wrote. Whatever. We don't need to get off on a tangent.
SPEAKER_02They're created by people that work together.
SPEAKER_00They are, they have collaborated.
SPEAKER_02And I my therapist also has these.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Oh, so what I was gonna say, so I do have the inner child oracle deck. I do not have the interactive card, but sometimes at the end of the when Tim and I do our long meditations, then we take another sometimes like 45 minutes and we share what we went through during those times and anything that's come up, or anything beautiful, anything heavy. And he'll usually show me the card. And um, they're powerful. Like they, and they might bring up different feelings for us in different ways, but just the way that they draw those cards, they really are powerful.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So, anyways, um, are you going? With that, yeah. So I think I think we can wrap up on this topic. Um, I again we wanted to share it because it's so incredibly healing. Uh I I already said it once, but for me, it's my favorite of all the healing modalities. And like Tim mentioned, it's free. I mean, you yes, you can go see Justin Shiver, hypnotherapist. Not kidding, but not really. But um, and you know, you can buy these decks, but you you don't need this stuff. Like you can start doing this work for free and just checking in with yourself. And you know, I think a good start is your inner child and seeing what they need. And and sometimes it's just a hug, like it's just self-care.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, and it's you know, I mean, I it's more like you don't have to think about it, you kind of feel it. It's kind of hard to explain. It's like you don't, you don't know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you yeah, it usually gets centered in your heart, and then yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And so I'd like to invite you guys to uh uh think about this for yourselves. Um have before before getting into this topic with us, had you guys ever heard of Parts Work and or does any of it resonate with you? We'd love to hear about it if you want to email us, text us, however, you can reach out to us. Uh because yeah, yeah, it does does this sound like a bunch of mumbo jumbo woo-woo stuff because that might be it's not, it might sound like it, but you're wrong.
SPEAKER_00I'm just kidding. Everybody is entitled to your opinion, and we respect it all. So it's not for everybody. I'm just teasing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. I mean, I'd like to hear whatever you have to say.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely. Absolutely. And no, go ahead.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so towards the end of the episode, we have um the space that sometimes we fill with our happily ever after. Um, like in once maybe before we read a review, because people will leave us reviews, and so we're gonna take this time now to read a couple reviews. Yeah, we got a couple our listeners on uh podcast Apple Podcasts.
SPEAKER_00Yes, thank you so much, listeners.
SPEAKER_02So this first one um is from Amy Christine T. It was written on January 23rd, 2026. And the title is five stars. Five stars.
SPEAKER_00That's not the title.
SPEAKER_02Amazing podcast with a little uh wine emojis clinking.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I'll read this one, then you can read the next one.
SPEAKER_01Uh sure, okay.
SPEAKER_02All right, so Amy and Tim's love story is so heartfelt and inspiring and truly couples goals. Uh, the entire world is searching for this mind, body, and soul twin flame, deep connection. Most never seem even come close. I mean, I need to learn how to read. Most never even come close to finding even a fraction of it, and very few are lucky to find it at all. We could all learn so much from this beautiful couple. The communication, the respect, the laughter, the true joy and happiness they exude just being around each other is like no other. I look forward to listening to this podcast weekly. Bi weekly now, sorry. Uh I'm lucky enough to know them personally, have watched them from afar, their love story unfold over the years. Thank you, Tim and Amy, for always striving to put positivity out into this sometimes negative world. You give us hope that true goodness does still exist. Great job on your successful podcast. Cheers to a lovely couple, geez Louise.
SPEAKER_00Thank you, Amy. That is a beautiful review. We should frame that. That that that's a one heck of a review. Thank you. Yes, thank you, thank you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, wow.
SPEAKER_00That really feels good. Yeah, yeah. Read it out loud. We tape it on the mirror every day, read it.
SPEAKER_02This is why we do it. Yes, not for the acolytes, not just to hear that it's making a difference in people's lives.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love it. So we have one more review, and this is from Amelia. A joy of oh, five stars. A joy of a podcast that has wisdom for those in a relationship and for those searching for someone special. I appreciate their consistent honesty, sweet personalities, and helpful activities. And I'm excited to grow my relationship alongside both Tim and Amy. Listener for life, Amelia. Thank you, Amelia. Thank you so much. That means so much. So, so, so, so much. Another beautiful review. And uh, we just appreciate you so much.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. All right, so um that's the end of that, and then we will just close it on down here with thanking you guys for showing up again here, episode number 14. I can't believe it.
SPEAKER_00Oh, wow.
SPEAKER_02It's like a teenager.
SPEAKER_00We're official.
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, and so you can listen to us wherever you're listening to us now, and also uh Spotify, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, maybe even iHeartRadio if you're feeling a little frisky. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh, frisky. Yeah. I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we're in a lot of places.
SPEAKER_00Wow, we're a global sensation. Literally.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Egypt lost their high ranks with us, though, unfortunately. I think when we called out um that Egypt was our our number one country past the U.S., we got shy and we scared our listener because the ranks are down. Um, anyways, you can also follow us on Instagram and Facebook under our life as a honeymoon official. And um, again, if anything from this episode resonated with you, or if you want to write us something that you'd like us to read online, you can leave us a review somewhere. But you can email us, let me not get ahead of myself, at our Life as a Honeymoon Official at gmail.com. And again, um those reviews were written on Apple Podcasts. So that is a great way place to write a review. Basically, just write us anywhere and we'll read what you say. Unless it's meme, then we won't. Maybe we maybe we still will, because there's always room for improvement, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And so if you'd like to support us, we have a uh place for that too. It's called our um buy me a pretzel.
SPEAKER_00Uh the lead. Let's start that one over again.
SPEAKER_02Buy me a coffee.com slash our life is a honeymoon. But it's our version of it is a uh Mickey pretzel.
SPEAKER_00Buy us a Mickey pretzel.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. And uh you can also subscribe and like this video on YouTube if you're watching. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
