Today we’re exploring one of the most beautiful and challenging calls Jesus ever gave His followers: “You are the light of the world.”
In Matthew chapter 5 verse 14, right in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus declares to His disciples—and through them to every one of us: “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew chapter 5 verses 14 through 16).
What does it mean to be the light of the world in 2026? The world feels darker than ever—wars raging, political division tearing families apart, leaders making decisions that seem to accelerate chaos, seasons of moral and cultural change that leave us feeling powerless. Celebrity scandals, endless headlines of evil, and the constant noise of social media can overwhelm even the strongest believer. So how do we fight back? How do we actually change the world when so much feels completely out of our control?
The answer, as Michael Jackson famously sang, starts with the man (or woman) in the mirror. It begins with how we live out Jesus’ message in the things we can control: how we react to others, how we communicate, how we treat every living thing—people, animals, and creation itself—and most importantly, how we hold ourselves accountable and represent Christ and His Kingdom every single day.
