That's the grounding element for you."},{"startTime":289.559,"endTime":294.119,"body":"I think part of it goes back to the idea of being a people pleaser."},{"startTime":294.269,"endTime":300.339,"body":"But also that I've, I've watched my dad who was a higher ed administrator"},{"startTime":300.769,"endTime":304.829,"body":"and his enjoyment of working with people"},{"startTime":304.839,"endTime":308.45,"body":"of getting them excited about the educational enterprise"},{"startTime":308.649,"endTime":315.16,"body":"of um living a life of, you know, that was social but also focused. And"},{"startTime":315.519,"endTime":319.429,"body":"I've always thought of myself as being part of a college community."},{"startTime":319.589,"endTime":322.26,"body":"Um It's a very interesting place to be."},{"startTime":322.269,"endTime":325.95,"body":"I'm always challenged, intellectually challenged professionally,"},{"startTime":326.14,"endTime":328.91,"body":"but you just come in contact with so many people who"},{"startTime":328.92,"endTime":334.7,"body":"have such broad experience and very different intellectual gifts and interests."},{"startTime":334.709,"endTime":341.32,"body":"And I, I think the relationship, part of it is valuing the people around you"},{"startTime":341.48,"endTime":343.14,"body":"and trying to bring"},{"startTime":343.399,"endTime":347.299,"body":"that knowledge and that experience into your own life."},{"startTime":347.369,"endTime":351.73,"body":"But then also giving back to it. I, I wish I was a better listener,"},{"startTime":351.989,"endTime":353.95,"body":"but I do have a few gifts,"},{"startTime":353.959,"endTime":358.38,"body":"at least administratively of listening to many different perspectives and then"},{"startTime":358.489,"endTime":363.049,"body":"finding solutions that meet most people's needs."},{"startTime":363.059,"endTime":366.07,"body":"There's certainly a sense of compromise in all of that,"},{"startTime":366.079,"endTime":370.869,"body":"but dealing with people where they are and trying to make your,"},{"startTime":371.049,"endTime":373.549,"body":"all of your situations better together"},{"startTime":374.57,"endTime":377.019,"body":"and that's not easy to do. That's a skill set."},{"startTime":378.209,"endTime":382.7,"body":"You spent your entire career in higher ed and, and wow, what a, what a career,"},{"startTime":383.07,"endTime":388.059,"body":"what attracted you to higher education and what has kept you in this field?"},{"startTime":388.07,"endTime":393.339,"body":"My mother said that working at a university, you would make a lot of money,"},{"startTime":393.35,"endTime":397.64,"body":"but it was a good life and I saw that in terms of the opportunities."},{"startTime":397.649,"endTime":399.579,"body":"Uh I grew up near the Saint Lawrence University"},{"startTime":399.69,"endTime":401.23,"body":"campus in Northern New York."},{"startTime":401.239,"endTime":401.709,"body":"And, you know,"},{"startTime":401.72,"endTime":404.75,"body":"you'd go over for films or you'd go for bowling or"},{"startTime":404.76,"endTime":408.35,"body":"you'd go for chapel services or you'd go to work."},{"startTime":408.359,"endTime":412.989,"body":"It was a small town and the university was a very important part of that town."},{"startTime":413.16,"endTime":418.07,"body":"So I got a real sense of that. I've only recently left small town life."},{"startTime":418.079,"endTime":423.829,"body":"I've never lived in a town larger than 7000 people until the last two years."},{"startTime":424.149,"endTime":425.329,"body":"And where do you live now?"},{"startTime":425.54,"endTime":427.769,"body":"We're in Fort Worth now and"},{"startTime":428.079,"endTime":431.2,"body":"we're here because of family. You know, we just,"},{"startTime":431.38,"endTime":434.94,"body":"I'm able to work from anywhere if I want to."},{"startTime":434.95,"endTime":438.26,"body":"And family here in Texas needed grandparents,"},{"startTime":438.269,"endTime":440.279,"body":"especially with the five year old and 12 year"},{"startTime":440.44,"endTime":444.809,"body":"old. But we have, so we have four grandkids here and we've got five in North Carolina"},{"startTime":445.149,"endTime":448.67,"body":"and we're now at a distance from them in North Carolina."},{"startTime":448.679,"endTime":451.829,"body":"So we'll be spending the summer back on the east coast as well."},{"startTime":453.519,"endTime":454.29,"body":"But I, I think,"},{"startTime":454.299,"endTime":458.92,"body":"I think just growing up in the higher ed area watching it happen"},{"startTime":458.929,"endTime":464.399,"body":"and then having opportunities starting off as a tour guide as an undergrad and"},{"startTime":464.519,"endTime":467.13,"body":"then finding a job in admissions that"},{"startTime":467.239,"endTime":469.69,"body":"gave me some financial aid experience."},{"startTime":470.019,"endTime":474.75,"body":"I was actually thinking of leaving that admissions work."},{"startTime":474.76,"endTime":478.529,"body":"But because we wanted to start a family, I was thinking about grad school."},{"startTime":478.54,"endTime":479.929,"body":"We were helping to start a church"},{"startTime":480.429,"endTime":485.329,"body":"and, um, they came to me and said, hey, Scott, um, the registrar is retiring."},{"startTime":485.339,"endTime":487.89,"body":"Would you please be an acting registrar for six"},{"startTime":487.899,"endTime":489.97,"body":"months until we can find a real registrar?"},{"startTime":490.019,"endTime":493.489,"body":"And I'm, I guess I'm still trying to be a real registrar."},{"startTime":494.079,"endTime":497.45,"body":"Wait, so is that recently or way back when that happened?"},{"startTime":498.22,"endTime":499.299,"body":"I got into the registry."},{"startTime":500.51,"endTime":500.829,"body":"But,"},{"startTime":500.98,"endTime":503.709,"body":"um, and, and then found a place,"},{"startTime":503.72,"endTime":506.7,"body":"a different school but found a place where we could live"},{"startTime":506.709,"endTime":510.059,"body":"and I worked for Washington and Lee for 35 years before."},{"startTime":510.07,"endTime":514.469,"body":"Then. I have done this semiretirement gig for the last couple of years."},{"startTime":514.88,"endTime":517.179,"body":"Ok. And so let's talk about that transition, right?"},{"startTime":517.19,"endTime":522.169,"body":"You've been doing stuff in higher education, very foundational expansive stuff,"},{"startTime":522.179,"endTime":523.38,"body":"admissions and others."},{"startTime":523.65,"endTime":528.309,"body":"But then switching over into the registrar career as interim, but still,"},{"startTime":528.32,"endTime":529.38,"body":"that's an adjustment."},{"startTime":529.39,"endTime":531.309,"body":"What was that adjustment like for you?"},{"startTime":531.51,"endTime":534.539,"body":"One of the reasons that they wanted me to do that was"},{"startTime":534.549,"endTime":539.719,"body":"because I had already invested myself in the institution where I was Muskingham"},{"startTime":539.969,"endTime":540.83,"body":"College at the time,"},{"startTime":540.934,"endTime":542.075,"body":"I'm in Ohio and"},{"startTime":542.265,"endTime":545.724,"body":"um I was active with student coc curriculars."},{"startTime":545.734,"endTime":548.635,"body":"I was an advisor in addition to my professional work."},{"startTime":548.645,"endTime":551.695,"body":"So I really knew what was going on on campus."},{"startTime":551.875,"endTime":554.734,"body":"And I think that investment plus I had some"},{"startTime":554.744,"endTime":558.145,"body":"technology background and I wasn't afraid of technology."},{"startTime":558.419,"endTime":559.2,"body":"So"},{"startTime":559.409,"endTime":564.359,"body":"using that tool to help other folks gain a different perspective."},{"startTime":564.369,"endTime":569.26,"body":"But also already knowing what the institution needed and wanted from me,"},{"startTime":569.359,"endTime":572.44,"body":"it was a fairly smooth transition other than"},{"startTime":572.659,"endTime":575.9,"body":"learning all of the registrar things, you know,"},{"startTime":575.909,"endTime":579.309,"body":"I've never had to worry about drops and ads and transcripts"},{"startTime":579.32,"endTime":582.869,"body":"and faculty curricular development and all of those other things."},{"startTime":582.94,"endTime":586.559,"body":"So just walking into with open eyes"},{"startTime":586.83,"endTime":589.806,"body":"trying to learn something knew about the institution,"},{"startTime":589.815,"endTime":595.156,"body":"I already knew so well when I made the change from one institution to another, it was"},{"startTime":595.426,"endTime":599.926,"body":"OK. Now I know the registrar work. OK, I'm not an expert yet,"},{"startTime":600.125,"endTime":604.575,"body":"but I can take those tools and now apply them to a new institution"},{"startTime":604.585,"endTime":609.806,"body":"and invest myself in that institution and learn more about what their needs are,"},{"startTime":609.815,"endTime":610.806,"body":"which were very different."},{"startTime":610.815,"endTime":615.546,"body":"Washington and Lee had a law school and was just going coed at the time,"},{"startTime":615.556,"endTime":618.306,"body":"I walked in the door with the first class of undergraduate women"},{"startTime":618.411,"endTime":623.872,"body":"the same week I started. So there were lots of new things, exciting challenges and"},{"startTime":624.161,"endTime":625.752,"body":"that keeps the energy up"},{"startTime":626.062,"endTime":628.421,"body":"Yeah, it really does. Can I, can I pause you for a second?"},{"startTime":628.432,"endTime":631.312,"body":"Let me, I would just love to delve deeper here. So,"},{"startTime":631.521,"endTime":635.192,"body":"when you were becoming interim registrar, how big was your team?"},{"startTime":635.202,"endTime":637.831,"body":"And how did you go about learning that work?"},{"startTime":637.992,"endTime":638.692,"body":"There were two of us,"},{"startTime":640.382,"endTime":641.452,"body":"there were two of us,"},{"startTime":641.771,"endTime":645.132,"body":"the registrar and the assistant to the registrar"},{"startTime":645.142,"endTime":647.971,"body":"and both of the previous ones had retired."},{"startTime":648.408,"endTime":649.018,"body":"Oh, my goodness."},{"startTime":650.658,"endTime":654.658,"body":"Vacuum in institutional knowledge and familiarity"},{"startTime":654.668,"endTime":656.307,"body":"in from the registrar's perspective."},{"startTime":656.317,"endTime":656.737,"body":"Now"},{"startTime":656.937,"endTime":660.427,"body":"they stayed in the area. So I was still able to use"},{"startTime":660.627,"endTime":663.197,"body":"their knowledge and, and willingness"},{"startTime":663.437,"endTime":667.138,"body":"as, as a mentor. But it was very much uh"},{"startTime":667.377,"endTime":670.987,"body":"one of the forgive me old timey registrars"},{"startTime":671.117,"endTime":675.588,"body":"who had either worked their way up clerical or had"},{"startTime":675.598,"endTime":678.297,"body":"been a faculty member for a long time and was looking"},{"startTime":678.604,"endTime":682.343,"body":"for a way to kind of phase down toward retirement administratively."},{"startTime":682.354,"endTime":684.664,"body":"It was not what I had been learning"},{"startTime":684.864,"endTime":687.864,"body":"from my work in admissions and financial aid"},{"startTime":687.874,"endTime":691.713,"body":"that there's a profession with best practices and"},{"startTime":691.723,"endTime":696.114,"body":"formal mentoring and people who are willing to tell you how to do your work."},{"startTime":696.124,"endTime":699.424,"body":"So immediately there was, it seemed obvious to me and I,"},{"startTime":699.434,"endTime":701.703,"body":"I made the case with the higher ups that"},{"startTime":701.963,"endTime":706.843,"body":"there were lots of changes that we could make that would be better for service,"},{"startTime":706.854,"endTime":708.304,"body":"better for efficiency."},{"startTime":708.59,"endTime":712.989,"body":"And again, working for small colleges, my, during my life, it,"},{"startTime":713.0,"endTime":717.57,"body":"it's fairly easy to walk into a situation where somebody"},{"startTime":717.58,"endTime":720.57,"body":"says we need you to think about this and,"},{"startTime":720.63,"endTime":722.239,"body":"and suggest changes"},{"startTime":722.419,"endTime":726.969,"body":"I certainly recognize with my relationships with folks who worked at much,"},{"startTime":726.979,"endTime":729.02,"body":"much larger institutions that"},{"startTime":729.26,"endTime":731.549,"body":"it's harder to make those kinds of changes,"},{"startTime":731.559,"endTime":737.609,"body":"but no less valued by your team when you take the work seriously and creatively."},{"startTime":737.94,"endTime":739.489,"body":"Yeah. And then thank you."},{"startTime":739.5,"endTime":742.969,"body":"And then when you went to Washington and Lee, how big is that institution?"},{"startTime":742.979,"endTime":745.2,"body":"-- And what was that transition like for"},{"startTime":742.979,"endTime":745.2,"body":"-- you?"},{"startTime":745.409,"endTime":746.869,"body":"You know, Washington and Lee"},{"startTime":747.2,"endTime":751.59,"body":"now is about 1850 undergrads and 400 law students."},{"startTime":751.96,"endTime":753.059,"body":"So it's still"},{"startTime":753.26,"endTime":758.359,"body":"on, on the very small side, about 2300 total. When I got there, it was even smaller."},{"startTime":758.369,"endTime":762.799,"body":"But again, they had this big institutional challenge going on of coeducation"},{"startTime":763.039,"endTime":767.859,"body":"of a predecessor who really wasn't familiar and wasn't interested necessarily in"},{"startTime":768.03,"endTime":772.03,"body":"technology as, as a, a regular tool."},{"startTime":772.19,"endTime":776.989,"body":"And um so I had a couple of very positive opportunities"},{"startTime":777.2,"endTime":780.58,"body":"to contribute immediately. I made terrible mistakes"},{"startTime":780.695,"endTime":781.695,"body":"early on, you know,"},{"startTime":781.705,"endTime":786.666,"body":"they used to have a little computer sized card that students would write in pencil,"},{"startTime":786.676,"endTime":788.366,"body":"what their registration was"},{"startTime":788.786,"endTime":792.866,"body":"and all these courses that required instructor consent and there"},{"startTime":792.875,"endTime":795.606,"body":"was no instructor consent on this little tiny card."},{"startTime":795.945,"endTime":798.385,"body":"So I dismantled it and I said,"},{"startTime":798.486,"endTime":801.226,"body":"you know, instructor consent required. Where's the signature?"},{"startTime":801.236,"endTime":804.606,"body":"Well, what signature? It's always been in the honor system. We don't have to,"},{"startTime":804.796,"endTime":807.486,"body":"I just tell you that I have permission to do it. Well,"},{"startTime":807.745,"endTime":809.296,"body":"in the trust but verify"},{"startTime":809.421,"endTime":809.452,"body":"e"},{"startTime":809.721,"endTime":812.432,"body":"that the mid eighties was um"},{"startTime":813.012,"endTime":818.242,"body":"I made the change without asking for advice and got in trouble with a few"},{"startTime":818.252,"endTime":820.611,"body":"faculty and a few administrators and saying you"},{"startTime":820.622,"endTime":823.021,"body":"can't just walk in and change stuff without"},{"startTime":823.122,"endTime":826.552,"body":"talking to people about the culture and what's going on."},{"startTime":826.771,"endTime":830.192,"body":"And I love that you shared that because, you know, we do make mistakes."},{"startTime":830.202,"endTime":831.052,"body":"It's a learning,"},{"startTime":831.062,"endTime":834.671,"body":"it's a trial and error and we always try with the best intentions but you know,"},{"startTime":834.682,"endTime":837.552,"body":"it's to live is to learn."},{"startTime":837.562,"endTime":838.031,"body":"And"},{"startTime":838.52,"endTime":843.39,"body":"uh and I appreciate you sharing that when you have had situations like that."},{"startTime":843.4,"endTime":843.9,"body":"How,"},{"startTime":843.909,"endTime":847.4,"body":"how have you gone about rebuilding trust and especially when it's"},{"startTime":847.409,"endTime":850.14,"body":"so early in your career and it's at a different institution."},{"startTime":850.27,"endTime":853.4,"body":"I think this is a situation that people can sometimes find themselves in"},{"startTime":853.844,"endTime":856.784,"body":"what would be your recommendation in a situation like that"},{"startTime":857.085,"endTime":858.044,"body":"from your experience."},{"startTime":858.054,"endTime":862.905,"body":"Well, immediately, I mean, I, I hope that I'm known as an honest person and,"},{"startTime":862.914,"endTime":864.664,"body":"and that I can be self critical."},{"startTime":864.674,"endTime":867.505,"body":"I think my wife might disagree.
