I grew up here in Oxford and, um,"},{"startTime":189.02,"endTime":192.649,"body":"attended Ole Miss as an undergrad, immediately started working"},{"startTime":192.91,"endTime":195.6,"body":"in Higher Ed in the registrar's office and I've"},{"startTime":195.61,"endTime":199.529,"body":"been working professionally on campus for 17 years now,"},{"startTime":199.539,"endTime":203.869,"body":"almost 17 years, all at the same institution all at the University of Mississippi."},{"startTime":203.88,"endTime":206.85,"body":"And it really is a way of life for us."},{"startTime":206.96,"endTime":210.089,"body":"You bleed red and blue when you've been here this long. So I really boil it down to that."},{"startTime":370.04,"endTime":373.51,"body":"Although when you read online and when you look at the textbook,"},{"startTime":373.519,"endTime":375.209,"body":"there's a lot more to strategic planning, you know,"},{"startTime":375.22,"endTime":378.519,"body":"talking about establishing direction and purpose and"},{"startTime":378.529,"endTime":381.63,"body":"setting goals and knowing how to budget and"},{"startTime":382.19,"endTime":384.559,"body":"all those things go into strategic planning."},{"startTime":384.57,"endTime":386.829,"body":"But in my simple world of strategic planning,"},{"startTime":386.839,"endTime":388.5,"body":"it's really about understanding who we are,"},{"startTime":388.51,"endTime":390.98,"body":"what we do and where we want to go and how we're going to get there."},{"startTime":391.329,"endTime":397.019,"body":"So, and, and I think it's important for offices and team units to"},{"startTime":397.14,"endTime":400.119,"body":"embrace strategic planning because while institutions"},{"startTime":400.13,"endTime":401.88,"body":"do it at an overarching level."},{"startTime":402.16,"endTime":402.899,"body":"Often times,"},{"startTime":402.91,"endTime":406.959,"body":"I don't think the individual staff in our departments really connect with that."},{"startTime":407.329,"endTime":409.829,"body":"And so how do they see themselves as part of"},{"startTime":409.839,"endTime":412.32,"body":"that strategic plan if they're not connecting with it?"},{"startTime":412.64,"endTime":414.049,"body":"And oftentimes we're just like, well,"},{"startTime":414.059,"endTime":416.66,"body":"that's our university strategic plan and that's what we work towards."},{"startTime":416.67,"endTime":419.88,"body":"But what does that really mean? And I don't think we really embrace what that means."},{"startTime":420.14,"endTime":420.519,"body":"So,"},{"startTime":420.529,"endTime":423.01,"body":"bringing it down to the department level and breaking it"},{"startTime":423.019,"endTime":425.39,"body":"down and getting the staff involved in that process,"},{"startTime":425.399,"endTime":425.7,"body":"I think,"},{"startTime":425.709,"endTime":428.059,"body":"helps them connect the work they do to the"},{"startTime":428.07,"endTime":430.459,"body":"success of the institution in a more tangible way,"},{"startTime":430.47,"endTime":430.959,"body":"right?"},{"startTime":431.14,"endTime":435.299,"body":"And, and being involved with the actual process is something that"},{"startTime":435.529,"endTime":440.807,"body":"was new to me. Um Going through this when I, when I came on board last year,"},{"startTime":440.976,"endTime":443.226,"body":"I've always said here's our strategic plan,"},{"startTime":443.236,"endTime":446.166,"body":"figure out how we're going to meet these goals and you're going,"},{"startTime":446.286,"endTime":449.236,"body":"where did this come from? Why is this a priority?"},{"startTime":449.247,"endTime":451.427,"body":"I've never even heard of this, you know, those kind of things."},{"startTime":451.557,"endTime":454.997,"body":"So being able to involve our team in"},{"startTime":455.147,"endTime":460.407,"body":"developing, where are we, where do we want to go? How do we think we should get there?"},{"startTime":460.416,"endTime":462.747,"body":"It gives you that buy in because if you just"},{"startTime":462.756,"endTime":464.666,"body":"plop something down in front of someone and say,"},{"startTime":464.677,"endTime":466.546,"body":"OK, here's what I need you to accomplish."},{"startTime":467.134,"endTime":470.283,"body":"They don't internalize those goals as much as if"},{"startTime":470.394,"endTime":471.674,"body":"they help develop them."},{"startTime":471.723,"endTime":475.473,"body":"So it really, it really works really well with our team because"},{"startTime":475.914,"endTime":479.493,"body":"a lot of times I think the registrar looks at themselves kind of as a silo"},{"startTime":479.503,"endTime":481.553,"body":"where we click these buttons and we produce"},{"startTime":481.563,"endTime":483.954,"body":"these transcripts and we do these things,"},{"startTime":483.973,"endTime":489.074,"body":"but we don't realize how our efforts play into the overall efforts."},{"startTime":489.084,"endTime":493.134,"body":"Um going back to what Danny was saying of the university. So if retention"},{"startTime":493.313,"endTime":494.023,"body":"is a"},{"startTime":494.381,"endTime":497.601,"body":"strategic goal of the university, if we really"},{"startTime":497.71,"endTime":502.3,"body":"delve into what the registrar does, we're critical to student retention."},{"startTime":502.48,"endTime":504.92,"body":"Um But understanding that"},{"startTime":505.05,"endTime":509.05,"body":"um I kind of look at it as the old saying, how do you eat an elephant one bite at a time"},{"startTime":509.17,"endTime":512.2,"body":"when you see these big overreaching goals of the university"},{"startTime":512.32,"endTime":513.66,"body":"that can be very daunting."},{"startTime":513.671,"endTime":519.27,"body":"But when we break it down and say, OK, as a registrar's office, here's what we do."},{"startTime":519.291,"endTime":521.52,"body":"How do we help meet this goal?"},{"startTime":521.626,"endTime":525.327,"body":"Those small bite size pieces make it so much more manageable."},{"startTime":525.336,"endTime":530.536,"body":"It gets you that buy in from your team and they really get more passionate"},{"startTime":530.546,"endTime":532.986,"body":"about what they're doing in achieving those goals"},{"startTime":532.997,"endTime":534.617,"body":"because they help develop them and said,"},{"startTime":534.627,"endTime":539.606,"body":"yeah, this is where we are, this is the issues we see in our day to day work,"},{"startTime":539.617,"endTime":541.127,"body":"how can we make them better?"},{"startTime":541.137,"endTime":544.156,"body":"And it was just a really interesting process to see our"},{"startTime":544.166,"endTime":548.767,"body":"team grow and mature and see different issues from all."},{"startTime":549.155,"endTime":551.244,"body":"It just was really a neat process"},{"startTime":551.385,"endTime":553.434,"body":"and I think that's one of the keys to it, as well as,"},{"startTime":553.445,"endTime":555.715,"body":"as the staff begin to engage with it,"},{"startTime":556.075,"endTime":560.974,"body":"they come up with ideas that are actually more effective than"},{"startTime":560.984,"endTime":563.575,"body":"what the leadership could come up with on their own."},{"startTime":563.635,"endTime":567.534,"body":"And so by engaging them, you're, you're actually building a stronger,"},{"startTime":567.544,"endTime":569.655,"body":"more stable strategic plan, I think."},{"startTime":570.255,"endTime":572.625,"body":"Yeah, I've been involved with, you know,"},{"startTime":572.635,"endTime":575.835,"body":"sort of implementing institutional strategic plans."},{"startTime":576.122,"endTime":577.502,"body":"I haven't been involved"},{"startTime":577.831,"endTime":584.421,"body":"specifically with this approach of a ground up sort of strategic plan,"},{"startTime":584.632,"endTime":589.382,"body":"creation development and uh localization. And so"},{"startTime":589.591,"endTime":594.021,"body":"maybe let's talk a little bit about sort of what the impetus was for you."},{"startTime":594.031,"endTime":596.771,"body":"When you and Danny, you said you've been"},{"startTime":596.971,"endTime":597.302,"body":"at almost"},{"startTime":597.642,"endTime":598.291,"body":"how long?"},{"startTime":599.361,"endTime":600.661,"body":"Yeah, for two years."},{"startTime":601.072,"endTime":603.252,"body":"And so when you arrived"},{"startTime":603.369,"endTime":608.249,"body":"and sort of we're going through an initial assessment, what was that process like?"},{"startTime":608.258,"endTime":611.778,"body":"And then what led to this sort of dare I say,"},{"startTime":611.789,"endTime":616.189,"body":"simplified approach to strategic planning within your office?"},{"startTime":616.239,"endTime":620.619,"body":"Yeah, so it actually goes back way further than two years for me."},{"startTime":620.648,"endTime":623.989,"body":"So like I said, I've been in higher education for, for almost 20 years and"},{"startTime":624.189,"endTime":626.419,"body":"when I started as a full time employee,"},{"startTime":626.429,"endTime":629.619,"body":"so I started as student assistant and when I started as a full time employee,"},{"startTime":629.629,"endTime":630.549,"body":"I actually had"},{"startTime":630.77,"endTime":635.39,"body":"the privilege of working under a really amazing registrar and he"},{"startTime":635.4,"endTime":638.989,"body":"had a completely different approach than I've actually experienced since then."},{"startTime":639.0,"endTime":639.25,"body":"And"},{"startTime":639.469,"endTime":642.489,"body":"probably one of my most favorite registrars to have ever worked with and"},{"startTime":642.63,"endTime":645.63,"body":"I learned a lot from him and I think that's where some of this comes from"},{"startTime":645.809,"endTime":646.83,"body":"because,"},{"startTime":646.979,"endTime":648.669,"body":"you know, as a staff member,"},{"startTime":648.919,"endTime":653.57,"body":"getting to be involved in the strategic planning process was eye opening."},{"startTime":654.03,"endTime":654.799,"body":"And"},{"startTime":655.059,"endTime":659.679,"body":"so then when I became a registrar, so I've worked at five different institutions,"},{"startTime":659.69,"endTime":662.75,"body":"four on the west coast and then now one in Mississippi."},{"startTime":662.76,"endTime":662.95,"body":"And"},{"startTime":663.69,"endTime":665.82,"body":"when I became a registrar"},{"startTime":666.25,"endTime":668.5,"body":"at the third institution I worked at,"},{"startTime":668.51,"endTime":671.859,"body":"um I started to be able to implement some of these things."},{"startTime":672.109,"endTime":674.89,"body":"And as we were going through the strategic planning process,"},{"startTime":674.9,"endTime":675.95,"body":"like I'm a business major,"},{"startTime":675.96,"endTime":678.95,"body":"I majored in business management and a minor in economics."},{"startTime":678.96,"endTime":679.5,"body":"And so"},{"startTime":679.76,"endTime":680.919,"body":"I have a foundation in that."},{"startTime":680.929,"endTime":683.049,"body":"And what happened was is I was trying to,"},{"startTime":683.059,"endTime":685.02,"body":"I was explaining strategic planning to the team"},{"startTime":685.03,"endTime":686.52,"body":"because I really wanted them to be involved"},{"startTime":686.53,"endTime":690.26,"body":"because it meant a lot to me when I was involved and trying to develop that,"},{"startTime":690.27,"endTime":693.7,"body":"that culture of inclusivity in that planning process."},{"startTime":693.71,"endTime":693.89,"body":"And"},{"startTime":694.179,"endTime":695.559,"body":"after one meeting,"},{"startTime":695.57,"endTime":698.559,"body":"I was talking to a staff member and I was asking how she felt about it."},{"startTime":698.57,"endTime":699.59,"body":"And she said, you know,"},{"startTime":699.77,"endTime":703.159,"body":"you use a lot of big words and you talk about things I don't understand and"},{"startTime":703.169,"endTime":707.919,"body":"it makes me sometimes it makes me feel dumb and I don't want to ask questions."},{"startTime":707.929,"endTime":709.94,"body":"And I was like, that's really amazing feedback."},{"startTime":709.95,"endTime":712.44,"body":"Actually, I'm glad you felt brave enough to share that with me,"},{"startTime":712.64,"endTime":713.88,"body":"but it made me think it got,"},{"startTime":713.89,"endTime":717.2,"body":"got me thinking about why do we have to talk about it in these terms?"},{"startTime":717.21,"endTime":719.28,"body":"That really if you went to business school,"},{"startTime":719.289,"endTime":721.359,"body":"you might understand and you might remember, right?"},{"startTime":721.75,"endTime":724.25,"body":"So why can't we take strategic planning and make"},{"startTime":724.26,"endTime":727.169,"body":"it something that everyone can understand and everyone can,"},{"startTime":727.179,"endTime":729.69,"body":"can grasp and get rid of the big terms and get rid of"},{"startTime":729.7,"endTime":732.599,"body":"the fancy language and just talk about it for what it is."},{"startTime":732.609,"endTime":733.38,"body":"And so that's"},{"startTime":733.559,"endTime":736.679,"body":"kind of what launched on this. Things were going well with compliance.
