Yard Sale Drama: Love Them or Hate Them?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
We dive into the wild world of yard sales, exploring the etiquette, strange finds, and frustrations that come with neighborhood commerce.
• Yard sales can be profitable when done right, with one host making $4,000 from selling a house full of items
• The pricing strategy for yard sales should already include the "hustle discount" with minimal room for further negotiation
• Proper yard sale etiquette includes bringing exact change and not haggling items already marked down significantly
• Some unusual yard sale finds include unopened personal items and separated cosmetics in the "adult section"
• Greek organization paraphernalia should never be sold at yard sales but rather returned to members or destroyed
• Certain items should never be purchased used, including undergarments, mattresses, and questionable electronics
• The best thrift stores are located in affluent neighborhoods where people donate higher quality items
Email us at allinyourbizz25@gmail.com if you've ever purchased something unusual at a yard sale - especially if you bought something from behind that special curtain!

Speaker 1Welcome, welcome to the real world, kids, welcome to the Los Enrique Show. Like always, we are all in your biz. Let's go One, two three.
Speaker 2You know what? Let's talk about yard sales.
Speaker 1Yard sales, yard sales, yard sales.
Speaker 2Whatever you want to call it Home sale, lot sale, whatever it may be, because sometimes these yard sales can get out of hand.
Speaker 1They can. They can, and let's talk about it, because I hate them. Let's talk about it, I hate them Now.
Speaker 2wait a minute. Now I done made, like some, a lot of money from yard sales.
Speaker 1How long were you outside or inside? Or online trying to sell some stuff and let me. I'm sure people talked you down to sell you a bedroom set for 50 cents, right?
Speaker 2yeah. So see, listen, I already have it all mapped out. Because, you know, a hustler can't swindle a hustle. You can't not do it, okay, because number one, remember, it's a yard sale, so everything, most of everything in there is used, okay.
Speaker 1So let's, let's get that point yeah, most of it is most of it.
Speaker 2I've said most of it. So when cats be trying to come to me say it's his fan and it's like I said, I'm selling for like five dollars, you're already getting out a discount. Okay, even if it's being used on it.
Speaker 1Can I get it for ten cents?
Speaker 2and people like. So if it's five dollars, like, can I get it for three? I said plug it up, see if it works sure I got a stingy quote right over there, you know, but in my yard sales the price is already reduced to the hustle level. Okay, so like.
Speaker 1So let's say you're selling, uh, some dvds, right?
Speaker 2dvds. You could think of nothing else. No.
Speaker 1You're selling a bike.
Speaker 2That's complimentary DVDs.
Speaker 1You're selling a bike, and then you get DVDs for free.
Speaker 2Exactly.
Speaker 1Okay, so you're selling a 10-speed bike.
Speaker 2Okay.
Speaker 1How much is the hustler's price?
Speaker 2Hold on. I mean there's a lot of factors. Is it old, rusty, is it bent? I don't know. You can tell me rusty is it bent, you know?
Speaker 1like okay, so if it's a decent condition, you may have to replace the seat okay.
Speaker 2So I'm just saying okay, depending on and then it also depends on how much I want to get rid of it, because a lot of stuff take up space yeah so if something that that you want to get rid of, you may bring it down a little bit more because you try and get rid of it, like I have helped people take it to their house, I want to get rid of it Okay. Like I have helped people take it to their house, I don't want to get rid of it so bad. But a 10-speed I'm just saying okay, if it was an adult 10-speed, maybe like $35.
Speaker 1Okay, and they say oh well, you know, can you sell it for $10?
Speaker 2$35. And then the most that I will go down on the price that I already made is $5.
Speaker 1So you'll go down $30. That's it.
Speaker 2That's it $30. And that's it. I'll let him ride it around up and down the street and whatever you know. However, I'll let him do that, but I'm not listen. I had some people like they were like man, that yard sale we had, and it was like can we get this on for like?
Speaker 1a dollar on it and I'm like for a dollar, thirty dollar gap vest.
Speaker 2Yeah, one like two dollars, two, three dollars the ticket was on there for three.
Speaker 1It's a lot of work to to line this, because you want your stuff to look nice. You have it on the rack you have a tag you have petty cash, you're doing all this stuff, water, all this stuff to entice the buyer. And then they pull up with the truck full of junk. I'm getting mad because it irritates me.
Speaker 1A truck full of junk that they've gotten and swindled for a quarter mattress with stains on it for 10 cents on the back of the truck, and they want to negotiate stuff with tags on it for little to nothing right?
Speaker 2no, I mean now I'll work. I mean I will work with you, like because I'm already working when I put this stuff out there.
Speaker 1Where's your pride?
Speaker 2you know like it's like. And then how about the people that come? With no change.
Speaker 1So do you tell them to buy more stuff? Yeah, exactly, okay it's a.
Speaker 2If it costs ten dollars and they be like all I got is seven, well, I guess you better go get three more, because that's as far as you're gonna go, or at least it's gonna go to. Uh, go down a couple dollars. If it's more than ten dollars, I can go down maybe five.
Speaker 1If it's ten dollars, it can go only down the increments of one so do you think people treat yard sales like swap shops and flea markets like they want to?
Speaker 2yes, okay, yeah there's people trying to wield and deal and all now. Now at the end, when I'm about done, and I've been out there maybe a day or a couple days, you know then I'll be practically giving stuff away. I'm like you want this? Hey, you get an iron. You know, you get a free ironing board with it and a pair of pants here and a kid.
Speaker 1Okay, exactly, what's the weirdest thing you've seen at a yard sale?
Speaker 2I don't really usually go to yard sales. Okay, um, I haven't, I don't go to yard sales like that, but I mean I have seen some craziest thing I've seen on a yard sale.
Speaker 1Um, would you buy underwear? No, used.
Speaker 2I think I've seen some ky at a yard sale once. Yeah, it wasn't open, it was like still got the seal on it like, if you threw that in the trash, I should tell them put in the cup and drink it. Yeah, but um, I'm like, you gotta be, you gotta be. I guess that was like the adult section.
Speaker 1So I only seen it was.
Speaker 2I've never seen an adult section garage sale, that's interesting, so you got your movies on one side you got your movies, your toys on one side, toys on one side.
Speaker 1You have to be 18 and over to go beyond the curtain and look at this stuff. Ew, you got unused condoms.
Speaker 2You got birth control pills. Anything that you need is in the adult section, but I can see the ky I'm like it's separate, like the lube is probably separate it's new.
Speaker 1I've seen, uh, I think uh, somebody was selling some uh avon, some old avon, and the lotion was separating from the oil like and you could see it break out yeah, you have to shake it up real, real hard to kind of, you know, combine the stuff in it. I'm just like uh but I think you know that's funny there's a process for like yard sellers and garage like, shout out to the people who do it and you find like great treasures like yeah, you know thrift stores and flea markets and yard sales and estate sales.
Speaker 2But I don't think I have that.
Speaker 1Yeah, you you really do. You have to get up early, you have to like ride through the neighborhoods and if you see people prepping, I've seen some people send lists out of what they're gonna have we said yeah, I mean, I've seen that too, yeah, um you know, people say, okay, I'm selling, you know, and people will say hey, you have any baby clothes, you have this, you have that that's pretty smart, though actually I think it is but they treat yard sale and like it's black friday, like they are out there yeah hard yeah, so all the times that I had yard sales I've I've done great.
Speaker 2You know, like I have sold like a whole house full of stuff and made like about $4,000. Okay yeah, I mean I was selling stuff and people like how much you know, like whatever I said. No, I said this is what it is. I take Zale, I take Cash App. I mean I don't really like Cash App, but I take Zale. I take cash out. I mean I don't really like cash out but I take Zelle. I take this and the other and then at one yard sale I help the lady take it to her house.
Speaker 1You know she was really trying to get rid of it.
Speaker 2Yeah, but I mean, it's like free delivery too. So I mean, on my yard sales I got free delivery but I'm using your vehicle, oh, okay. You just helped me. I'm about to put it in their mind.
Speaker 1Now, what I do have an issue too, is if somebody is having a yard sale and a state sale, or somebody passes away and you're selling their things. Please be mindful of the type of things that you donate or the type of things that you take to the thrift store, because we've all seen people buying Greek paraphernalia.
Speaker 2Oh yeah.
Speaker 1And Julio is now a Delta.
Speaker 2Wow.
Speaker 1And Mary is an Omega. Like don't do that. If you know somebody who is Greek or part of an affiliation and they pass away or they no longer are able to house these things, destroy those items or give them to another person of that organization, please don't have the stuff taken away, house these things, destroy those items or give them to another person of that organization. Please don't have the stuff taken away and sourced somewhere and sold.
Speaker 1And because you may get checked it gets, you may get, but but then again, these people are innocent, they don't know they might have they know they listen they might have went to a thrift shop and say, oh, this red and white shirt is pretty.
Speaker 2Let me put it on no, let me tell you what I didn't. I didn't tell a couple people um. I asked them. I said hey, are you um such and such? And they didn't. Whatever I said. You may want to take that off like I got. I got kind of offended I, I don't you don't, so you don't go to the extreme no, there's no, okay, I didn't, I didn't, um, yeah, I didn't. I don't like that, you know and I know we, I know we're talking about yard sales and all, but you didn't.
Speaker 1You didn't struck a nerve you didn't.
Speaker 2You didn't struck a nerve but, so just a one quick story, though. So it was this gentleman saying like help, help me, like he was supposed to be homeless and all. He was pretty clean, you know. But being clean doesn't mean that you're homeless. You know you are, you're not. But he had a sign on. He said help a fellow Mason, I'm homeless.
Speaker 2Mm, hmm and I looked and it just so happened the light had turned red and I was like three, four cars back and I seen him. You know, made this little, this little generic, fake little sign but I can make out what it was and, um, I was kind of offended by it. When I went up to him, you know, as cars were leaving the light was real quick, and then I was like right next to him and, um, you know, asked him a few things, whatever it is, you know, to kind of authenticate who he was and if he was like right next to him and, um, you know, asked him a few things, whatever it is, you know, to kind of authenticate who he was and if he was so amazing and all.
Speaker 1But this cat was not maybe he was a brick built mason, that kind of like no, not what, he had the sigma or something like that no I'm just trying and um, yeah, I um I wasn't too happy with that.
Speaker 2Yeah, I wasn't too happy that. You know, if I see that yard sale, I'm taking it yeah sorry about that it's okay, um.
Speaker 1This brings me to another thought, where um?
Speaker 2I'm taking.
Speaker 1There was a kid in a school, um, and I think they had a accident, and, um, they went to the office. The nurse gave them a shirt out of Lost and Found and the shirt was it said AKA on it, right? So the little girl's the shirt. She goes back to class and her teacher happens to be an AKA and she goes up to the little girl and she says hey, you know. Do you know what that shirt means, is it?
Speaker 1who gave you the shirt. You need to take the shirt off. And the little girl was like why I like the shirt. I don't know if something if she wore the shirt to school or if she something happened to her.
Speaker 2I think I heard this story, yeah, and so she wore it to school.
Speaker 1She wore it to school Somebody. Somehow she got the shirt she wore to school. The teacher was offended.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1And the teacher confronted the child and there was a discussion stating was the teacher right? Was she in her right to check the child about the shirt, or you know?
Speaker 2and I think she got in trouble.
Speaker 1How do you feel about that? I, okay, I don't think. Yes, the child does not. She's not a member of the sorority. However, as a mature person, what can you say? Do you have any? I think she even offered her something else to wear. But, it's not your place. You know you can talk to. Maybe send a message to the child's mother.
Speaker 1You know you can talk to maybe send a message to the child's mother, you know, and say, hey, you know, I noticed that the child had on this, you know, alpha cap, alpha shirt. You know, it's not appropriate if you're not a member to wear it. You know, could you please, you know, be mindful of that and maybe even talk to the principal, copy the principal on the email or say we can have a discussion and talk about it, you know, but it's inappropriate. But for her, for the teacher, to confront the child and say you know, you shouldn't be wearing that shirt. However she said it, that was out of that, was out of place in her position. I don't think she should have said that.
Speaker 2I agree with that too, you know.
Speaker 1but you can't charge a child up. It's just not like it's just certain things that, even if it's wrong, even if it's you know done and you just shouldn't do it, it's not your place. And then it's like there's another thing where an adult is charging up or coming inappropriate to a child. An adult is, you know, talking to a child disrespectfully. That's when then the parents get involved, because you're not gonna I don't care what she had on, if she had on the uh, a soldier form, you're not gonna confront my child. If you have an issue, you talk to me.
Speaker 2Okay, that's a child. What if it was a? What if it was an adult? I'm asking you, you out and about you, out in the streets and you see somebody with a whole bunch of aka stuff on hybrids. Would you feel some type of way or would you say something? And they was very acting, very inappropriate, and you know that they were not aka yes, but um to an extent okay, what would you do because?
Speaker 1I'm not a police, I'm not this and that and you want to do that, but I've seen some people beat some people up.
Speaker 2You know wearing would you be people? What you're saying? No, oh no. No, you bought that life no, I'm not.
Speaker 1I'm not doing all that. For what? What does that prove? You know, they're still going to probably put it back on, you know, and I think a person may have some kind of issue if they go to those extents to perpetrate being something that they're not right to do.
Speaker 2It happens every day.
Speaker 1It happens every day, so there must be something wrong with you, know a person that does something like that, and it's not for me to to determine you know.
Speaker 2Have you seen some at a yard?
Speaker 1If I seen what Some some paraphernalia at a yard sale.
Speaker 2Exactly, I would buy it. You would buy it all. Yeah, you would buy it all. What if they had a whole table full of? Would you buy it all?
Speaker 1I would probably try to, or ask if I could just get a, you know, a decent rate but like 400 for all this stuff no well, I would probably explain, you know what it means. Some old boule bags yeah, I would probably try to explain what it means and you know means and if I could get you know a lot rate for it and you know, probably destroy it or give it away to somebody that only is it be like a whole lot of stuff out there the table aka stuff.
Speaker 2But did it be fake, because you can see where they?
Speaker 1they didn't sold it, it was wrong they got it from korea when they were stationed over there. Yeah, exactly, so you still gonna buy it all no, I mean, if it's, I would try to ask for a special rate so I can just get rid of it. Yeah.
Speaker 2Even if it's my great-great-unty was.
Speaker 1I bought it off of Amazon and the crest is you know, okay, but yeah, it's just those things. So you know, shout out to the Garfits. To the male sororities out there.
Speaker 2Yeah. And then you have a shirt. It said oh, if you want to buy this, we can give you all this for like, for $200. And then we have our special shirt over here that says Eto.
Speaker 1That says what.
Speaker 2Shut up.
Speaker 1It says brick by brick.
Speaker 2It says Eto, yeah, yeah, no no, he goes eat that dude, like they go deep yeah, like they get and we have our 1908 shirts over here.
Speaker 1They be like darn okay, I see you, I see you, but yeah um I think is okay, before we go, is there like an etiquette. I think, okay, before we go, is there like an etiquette for yard sales, or what are the do's and the don'ts If you are a buyer, if you're going to buy something, what should you do or not do?
Speaker 2What you should do come with money change. Okay, okay Some dollars fives, tens, twos. Have your phone charged up because you can do tap and pay on the spot about square. Okay, make sure you have that. That's a dude, then you must do that. Okay, do not try to um complain about stuff if it's if it's messed up or a little defected.
Speaker 1No, man, the buttons came off.
Speaker 2Let me let me get it for 50. Okay, it's used. Let me get that. Gordon Gartrell, don't be trying to try on the clothes what you can't try. No, no.
Speaker 1No Yard sale. It is as is Okay, so okay.
Speaker 2Yard sale is as is. You can't bring it back and it's no refund. You should know what size you are right and there's no yard sale, was it's a yard sale, that means there's no refunds, okay. Okay, we ain't paying taxes. I ain't accepted taxes. You know it is what it is, okay, and you don't try to examine it like for five or ten minutes.
Speaker 1Either you're gonna get it or you ain't so what if they're looking at it for five or ten minutes? No, that's too. That's too long. That's busy with another customer.
Speaker 2They run off because that other customer over there is sitting in his car wait for you to leave. You examine it for a couple minutes. Either you're gonna get it or you ain't. Okay, because I got more customers up here. They ready to go to the adult section and buy these little these little toys and stuff. Okay, you can't just be in there trying it out trying out what the toys are. The yes oh this thing is kind of loud. It's used okay okay, it's used. Okay.
Speaker 1Um, and don't try to lowball nobody yeah, that's tacky I mean, if I guess, if the seller offered you, yeah, if I say I'll take it, for if it's five dollars, I'll take it for three, like that should be enough. Like don't say, well, you take it for a dollar.
Speaker 2You know, don't do that, don't, don't, don't do that. Ok, those are things, that that you don't do.
Speaker 1So let me ask you, if you sold let's say, some encyclopedias, right, and Let me ask you, if you sold let's say, some encyclopedias right, and you remember that you hid like $50 in one of your encyclopedias, is it appropriate for you to flag that person down, to go through those books and shake them all and file your $50?
Speaker 2Or is all. Sales are final, it's a loss partner, okay. So before you put it out there, you should have shook them books.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2You should have checked them pots. You know, okay, you know. So that's just a loss. You know that's just a disposal ward.
Speaker 1You lost and they're gonna get over because they're gonna ride by and blow the horn, because you know they found it and they're gonna come to every one of your yard sales because they know you're gonna have something hidden exactly you ain't gonna check. That's why you check. You know it's check, yeah always check you know.
Speaker 2So nope, you lost is a. It's a reason why it says there's no refund.
Speaker 1That goes for both the seller and the buyer okay, yeah, well, I won't be going to a yard sale, but shout out to those who do shout out to the yard sellers yeah, the yard buyer, or the?
Speaker 2what's the name for somebody? What's a good name?
Speaker 1I don't know the Yard Shoppers.
Speaker 2The Yard Sale Shoppers, the.
Speaker 1Yard Sale Bandits. Yeah, I don't know they vicious. And it's popular too. It's very popular.
Speaker 2It's very, very, very popular and people be looking. You know all walks of life coming, so you know, shout out to the people that maybe have a yard sale coming up this weekend yeah, you know, this is this is yard sale weekend. I mean yard sale season yeah you know like in the fall people be trying to get rid of the stuff. You know right before in the spring, you know. So this is around that time christmas.
Speaker 1Yeah, you're trying to get rid of stuff before christmas or right before school starts. Your kids can't fit these clothes and exactly get more clothes, so you got to make room, so you have a yard sale I don't I just put them in those little bins that are, that are by the school, because who has time for that, you know?
Speaker 2yeah, yeah, but some people do that's true, and that's why, if you ain't in it, you can't win it. So shout out to the people that uh uh doing yard sales, and shout out to the people that's getting them deals.
Speaker 1Yeah, all of that.
Speaker 2All right.
Speaker 1well, with that being said, If you are a yard seller or you, or if you have purchased some stuff behind that curtain behind the curtain choppers, email us email us at all in your biz. Twenty five at Gmail dot com. We want to know.
Speaker 2We want to know what you bought and why? Why did you get it from a yard sale?
Speaker 1Because it was a charger.
Speaker 2Right, and do you have to get it just because it's in a yard sale? You know, some people just get stuff just because you know, but, um, some things you just need to leave right where they be yeah, don't be a hoarder too.
Speaker 1That's another thing, just don't buy stuff because it was 10 cents and now you have a hundred uh saucers that don't match and you have no place to put them. Don't be that person, you gotta use wisdom too.
Speaker 2You know you ain't gonna buy batteries, you. You see them leaking.
Speaker 1Okay, like they ain't no good, put them in the freezer yeah, but they already rusted out oh okay.
Speaker 2So you know you have to be cautious the things you get, and be safe too, because some things you know, especially if it's electrical. You know before we leave, because I will, I would never go to I would never buy nothing electrical. You would no, because I mean you never know. You know if it has short circuit or whatever it is, and then they're trying to um sell it, you know so have you ever bought something that short?
Speaker 2no, no, I haven't. And then bugs live in things that, uh, conduct heat too. I learned that from my electronic class and I've seen it before, you know. So if they stay in there because it's warm and those you know, like those motherboards and stuff, they stay warm in there so it can attract bugs.
Speaker 1So no electronics no, I would say what shouldn't you buy? Don't buy mattresses and pillows.
Speaker 2Yeah, you don't want bed bugs and all that weird stuff. No, you don't want, no matter how enticing it may look, but don't.
Speaker 1Or baby batter.
Speaker 2Yeah, you don't want no baby batter on there, then you be itching talking about what's wrong. Yeah, you know I wouldn't Some things, it's okay, just to you know, I wouldn't things.
Speaker 1It's okay just to you know, just wait your turn and wait to buy it, say your money undergarments? I wouldn't they have a little skid in the well listen I take a little bit off the price they have a little skid in the seat, you can put a little bleach on it you know, but look pair draws.
Speaker 2It was like 10. If got skid marks, I can let them go for three.
Speaker 1It depends if it was at the back.
Speaker 2I let it go for three.
Speaker 1If it's the front, then the acid that ate out the seats, the acid the drawers.
Speaker 2So if the drawers going for 10, if they had like a little blowout or something back there, they can go for three. This is just for the back. Now if the front got a little something on it, I went from ten. I can get it down to at least four. I mean to five Because I'm you know, I'll give you a little bit more grace if it's on the blowout side. If you got a, both, a combo one, two. I may let them go for like two.
Speaker 1Okay, so everything has its conditions.
Speaker 2You know it's terms and conditions Clearly. You know, but that blowout you know, so I washed them.
Speaker 1Washed them out as much as I could. Okay, just don't, don't, don't, just don't buy.
Speaker 2Undergarments.
Speaker 1Underwear.
Speaker 2Yeah, like jock straps and all that stuff.
Speaker 1Any place you have to put your body parts where somebody else's body parts were just don't.
Speaker 2Just don't Just go without.
Speaker 1Yeah, just go without. Go to what's that Dirt, cheap or Dollar General? Even Dollar Tree has, you know do what? You got to do, but just do it safely.
Speaker 2Yeah, you go find a nice. Before you can go to a nice thrift store, let me tell you and this is what, no, no, I'm just saying in general, you know to find stuff, and let me tell you the secret before we leave okay, what's the secret? If you want to go to a thrift store, you got to go to a nice community, a nice neighborhood, because they have nice stuff and they drop nice stuff off.
Speaker 1Cause, so the people that are in the surrounding areas will take their nice things to that particular.
Speaker 2Exactly. But now, if you in a a iffy area and a thrift store they collect iffy iffy, then they may you know it's different. Iffy would be. Them draws with a blowout drug needles and oh, I mean no, no, no, no no I mean, it can just be.
Speaker 2I I've seen it, I witnessed it. It's just like a better selection of things. Um, I haven't been to a thrift store in a while but you know, just kind of go see, because sometimes you can find jewels if you're willing, you got time to go.
