Today on Being Mary, we come full circle.
In the final episode of the Daughter – Mom – Grandmother series, I reflect on the tender wisdom of becoming a grandmother — or an Oma, as I’m called.
This season is softer.
It’s about presence instead of direction.
About watching love continue — and trusting what you’ve passed on.
In this episode, I share reflections on legacy, letting go, and the quiet joy of seeing parts of yourself live on through the next generation.
✨ If this episode resonates, I invite you to share it — or revisit the earlier chapters of the series.
These stories were meant to be walked together.

Hi it’s Mary and Welcome back to Being Mary.
We’ve traveled together through the journey of being a daughter, then a mother, and now — we arrive here — the becoming of a grandmother or an Oma as I’m called.

This one feels tender.
Because it’s not just about a new title… it’s about coming full circle.

When I first held my grandchild, I felt a kind of love I didn’t even know existed.
It wasn’t the fierce, protective love I had as a mother — it was softer, lighter, somehow wiser.
It carried no expectation. No pressure.
 Just pure joy.

There’s something sacred about that moment — when your child becomes a parent.
It’s as if time folds in on itself.
You see your baby holding their baby.
And in that instant, you understand that life really is a circle.

Being a grandmother isn’t just about spoiling the little ones — though I’ll admit, that part is fun.
 It’s about legacy.
 About witnessing.
About standing back and letting the next generation take the lead — even when your instinct is to step in.

You realize that the lessons you once taught your children have taken root.
They’re growing their own families now, making their own choices — sometimes differently than you would have.
 And that’s okay.
 That’s the letting go part.

I’ve learned that being a grandmother is about presence, not direction.
It’s about being there — to listen, to encourage, to share stories of where we’ve come from.
Because our stories matter.
They remind the next generation who they are, and where their strength comes from.

Sometimes, I look at my grandchildren and see bits of myself — a familiar smile, a stubborn streak, a sense of wonder.
It’s humbling to realize that part of me lives on in them, just as part of my mother lives on in me.

There’s also a quiet freedom in this season.
You get to love deeply, but without the daily responsibilities that once consumed you.
You can show up with open arms and an open heart.
You can play, laugh, and tell stories.
You can pass down wisdom gently, like seeds in the wind.

And in between those moments, you get to reflect.
 On how far you’ve come.
 On the life you’ve built.
On the family that grew from your love.

[Softer tone – emotional close building]
Being a grandmother teaches you about time — and about trust.
 Trusting that you did enough.
 That you were enough.
That your love continues to ripple through generations, long after your hands have let go.

If you’re a grandmother listening today, take a quiet moment to honour what you’ve given — not just to your family, but to the world.
Your presence is the heartbeat of your family’s story.
And that is a legacy that lasts forever.

This completes our Daughter – Mom – Grandmother series — a reflection on growth, love, and the changing seasons of womanhood.

We don’t stay the same through these chapters — and we’re not meant to.
We evolve, soften, and learn that love doesn’t end — it simply changes shape.

Thank you for walking this journey with me — and for letting me share my heart with yours.

And remember to keep walking, I know I say it a lot, but it’s important at any age; and share this or the previous episodes with someone you think would benefit and enjoy reflecting on this journey.

See you next time on Being Mary.
