She"},{"startTime":100.61,"endTime":104.37,"body":"led Churchill High School to its first ever state swimming"},{"startTime":104.45,"endTime":108.13,"body":"championship, and she was a 4-time All-American at the University of Texas at"},{"startTime":108.53,"endTime":111.69,"body":"Austin when the Longhorns won 4 straight NCAA"},{"startTime":111.69,"endTime":115.41,"body":"team championships in the 1980s. Vanessa went"},{"startTime":115.41,"endTime":118.89,"body":"on to become the U.S. national champion in modern pentathlon"},{"startTime":118.89,"endTime":122.65,"body":"in 1993 and 1994, and that was back"},{"startTime":122.65,"endTime":126.35,"body":"when the Olympic sports headquarters were located right here in San"},{"startTime":127.47,"endTime":130.916,"body":"Antonio. You represented the USA at the World Championships in"},{"startTime":131.024,"endTime":134.63,"body":"'91, '93, and '94, won the swimming event each year,"},{"startTime":134.63,"endTime":138.43,"body":"and posted the fastest run-swim combinations in the"},{"startTime":138.91,"endTime":142.03,"body":"world. And you were a two-time individual gold medalist at the Pan"},{"startTime":142.19,"endTime":145.95,"body":"American Championships and the U.S. Olympic Festival. Wow, that's a"},{"startTime":146.51,"endTime":150.11,"body":"lot. And you've both always been animal lovers, which is why you're"},{"startTime":150.11,"endTime":153.87,"body":"here today. Kathy, maybe we'll start with"},{"startTime":157.78,"endTime":160.82,"body":"you. You're writing nationally, you're hearing from people all over the"},{"startTime":161.78,"endTime":165.26,"body":"country. Tell us how San Antonio compares to other cities in the state"},{"startTime":165.26,"endTime":168.82,"body":"and beyond in terms of our animal"},{"startTime":169.14,"endTime":172.78,"body":"population, the animal welfare ecosystem that's been built in"},{"startTime":172.78,"endTime":176.62,"body":"the city, and just where we're at today. Okay. Well, I mean,"},{"startTime":176.62,"endTime":178.82,"body":"when I moved here in"},{"startTime":180.18,"endTime":183.62,"body":"2001, that's when I learned that we were euthanizing animals by"},{"startTime":183.62,"endTime":187.08,"body":"gas chamber, right? And we weren't doing that on the East Coast. Coast. So that"},{"startTime":187.08,"endTime":190.92,"body":"was my first introduction into San Antonio. I realized at that"},{"startTime":190.92,"endTime":194.44,"body":"time we were very far behind. I went to work for the San"},{"startTime":194.44,"endTime":197.92,"body":"Antonio Humane Society. The story broke about what"},{"startTime":197.92,"endTime":201.56,"body":"the ACS was at that time euthanizing 50,000 animals"},{"startTime":201.56,"endTime":205.32,"body":"a year. That was a series of stories in Express News at"},{"startTime":205.32,"endTime":209.08,"body":"the time that shocked all of us, I think. It did. And the city just"},{"startTime":209.08,"endTime":212.64,"body":"sort of erupted, right? People suddenly thought, we're not going to let this"},{"startTime":213.6,"endTime":217.2,"body":"happen. Over the last 20 years, I've seen so many changes happen in San"},{"startTime":218.38,"endTime":220.9,"body":"Antonio, and those Those changes are right along with a lot of the major cities"},{"startTime":220.9,"endTime":224.62,"body":"in the US. In fact, something that a lot of people don't know,"},{"startTime":224.62,"endTime":227.98,"body":"initially when that happened, the San Antonio Area Foundation stepped"},{"startTime":228.14,"endTime":231.66,"body":"up and made a commitment for like the next 10 years"},{"startTime":233.18,"endTime":236.62,"body":"to, um, put money into spay/neuter and to awareness,"},{"startTime":236.62,"endTime":240.34,"body":"bilingual materials and all that. They got asked, and I"},{"startTime":240.34,"endTime":243.82,"body":"went with them, to go to Dallas to help them introduce things like"},{"startTime":243.98,"endTime":247.71,"body":"that. Texas, I think, was just a little further behind back then. Than a lot"},{"startTime":247.71,"endTime":251.47,"body":"of other cities. Today, I say they're comparable. I would say"},{"startTime":251.47,"endTime":254.87,"body":"they're slightly above average. There's always more that can be"},{"startTime":255.43,"endTime":259.15,"body":"done. There is, I think the biggest challenge these days"},{"startTime":259.15,"endTime":262.51,"body":"is that shelters 20, 30 years ago, they took animals in and"},{"startTime":262.51,"endTime":266.23,"body":"they euthanized them and they didn't do much else. I think we learned from that"},{"startTime":266.23,"endTime":269.99,"body":"story that, that when animals are picked up, there are other"},{"startTime":269.99,"endTime":273.59,"body":"things that we can do. And over the years, we've done things"},{"startTime":274.3,"endTime":278.1,"body":"like create partners, right, with rescue groups, do"},{"startTime":278.1,"endTime":281.9,"body":"transports to get animals from Texas up to Connecticut where"},{"startTime":281.9,"endTime":285.62,"body":"there's not an overpopulation. The biggest thing right now"},{"startTime":285.62,"endTime":289.22,"body":"is access to care. Trying to help pet owners who might be"},{"startTime":289.22,"endTime":292.86,"body":"in underserved areas of town in certain zip codes"},{"startTime":292.86,"endTime":296.54,"body":"where there's a veterinary desert and there's absolutely no care that"},{"startTime":296.54,"endTime":300.34,"body":"they could— affordable care or free care that they can access."},{"startTime":300.34,"endTime":303.5,"body":"So I think San Antonio has, the last 20"},{"startTime":304.16,"endTime":307.52,"body":"years, It's been a long haul watching the changes that have needed to"},{"startTime":307.76,"endTime":310.72,"body":"happen, but I think they're right in there with other large"},{"startTime":311.36,"endTime":315.16,"body":"groups. I think right now we're starting to focus on access to care. That's sort"},{"startTime":315.16,"endTime":318.72,"body":"of new. A lot of communities have gotten to that part"},{"startTime":318.8,"endTime":322.2,"body":"already, so we're just transitioning into that. With"},{"startTime":322.56,"endTime":326.28,"body":"Spay/Neuter Network, the, the clinic here in town,"},{"startTime":326.28,"endTime":329.68,"body":"access to care is something that's important to us in terms of helping"},{"startTime":330.94,"endTime":334.78,"body":"people I think we're getting there, but there's— the challenge has"},{"startTime":335.1,"endTime":338.9,"body":"changed. It's gone from housing animals to how to keep animals from"},{"startTime":338.9,"endTime":341.9,"body":"entering the shelter in the first place. Well, before we talk"},{"startTime":342.78,"endTime":346.62,"body":"about spay/neuter services with Vanessa, give me just a"},{"startTime":346.62,"endTime":350.38,"body":"little bit more history, because shortly after that series ran and the"},{"startTime":350.38,"endTime":353.82,"body":"city learned about this, Cheryl Scully became our city"},{"startTime":354.62,"endTime":358.46,"body":"manager. She came from Phoenix, brought a lot of new ideas and practices with"},{"startTime":359.0,"endTime":362.6,"body":"us. With her and, um, we became a quote,"},{"startTime":362.92,"endTime":366.64,"body":"no-kill city, or at least we aspire to be a no-kill city. What exactly"},{"startTime":366.64,"endTime":369.88,"body":"does that mean? And did we achieve it or"},{"startTime":370.44,"endTime":374.0,"body":"not? That's a really good question because no-kill, a lot of people hear those words"},{"startTime":374.0,"endTime":377.8,"body":"and think it means no euthanasia. And that is not what it means. It means"},{"startTime":377.8,"endTime":381.08,"body":"that every animal that's healthy that can be"},{"startTime":381.88,"endTime":384.4,"body":"treated will, you will do everything in your power to get that animal out of"},{"startTime":384.4,"endTime":388.1,"body":"the shelter alive, whether it's, it's called live release. And whether it's"},{"startTime":388.1,"endTime":391.86,"body":"through adoptions, foster care, putting animals on a"},{"startTime":391.86,"endTime":395.58,"body":"transport to get 'em to another shelter, uh, somewhere else in the country."},{"startTime":395.58,"endTime":399.42,"body":"So that's, and 10, about 9 to 10% of the animals oftentimes"},{"startTime":399.42,"endTime":403.26,"body":"can't be cared for. Maybe there's aggression and you have to"},{"startTime":403.26,"endTime":406.74,"body":"make decisions. ACS has achieved no-kill,"},{"startTime":407.54,"endTime":411.14,"body":"but which is considered 91%. I think right now they're in"},{"startTime":411.14,"endTime":414.86,"body":"the mid to high 80s. It's an ongoing challenge. I"},{"startTime":414.86,"endTime":418.7,"body":"mean, you can achieve no-kill and then slide back and then achieve no-kill"},{"startTime":418.7,"endTime":422.22,"body":"and slide back. That is a constant pattern for all"},{"startTime":422.22,"endTime":425.94,"body":"animal shelters across the country. No one just sort of achieves it and they're"},{"startTime":426.5,"endTime":429.54,"body":"there. But in order to achieve it, you have to have a"},{"startTime":430.34,"endTime":434.02,"body":"multiple approach to programs, you know, foster care. And"},{"startTime":434.02,"endTime":437.78,"body":"I will say foster care, I think the awareness of that story"},{"startTime":437.78,"endTime":440.82,"body":"breaking in 2005 was that so"},{"startTime":441.8,"endTime":445.64,"body":"many people heard about what was happening and they stepped up. And"},{"startTime":445.64,"endTime":449.32,"body":"through the years, the foster care system for San Antonio, for"},{"startTime":449.32,"endTime":452.92,"body":"all the animal groups, has grown a lot. Um,"},{"startTime":452.92,"endTime":456.56,"body":"access to transports, getting animals to other shelters or working"},{"startTime":456.56,"endTime":460.32,"body":"with rescue partners who come pull. You know, San Antonio Pets"},{"startTime":460.32,"endTime":464.08,"body":"Alive!, they go in and they'll pull animals right from the euthanasia list to make"},{"startTime":464.08,"endTime":467.56,"body":"sure that those animals will get cared for. Um, but they can't"},{"startTime":467.56,"endTime":470.6,"body":"pull animals that are deemed too dangerous or too"},{"startTime":471.85,"endTime":475.05,"body":"sick. ACS introduced, they have a really"},{"startTime":475.45,"endTime":479.21,"body":"nice veterinary medical program now. They do spay-neuters there on"},{"startTime":479.77,"endTime":483.53,"body":"cats, community cats, dogs and cats, owned pets. But they also have"},{"startTime":483.53,"endTime":486.69,"body":"vets on staff now that can treat animals that might not have been treated 20"},{"startTime":486.69,"endTime":489.69,"body":"years ago because our mindset 20 years ago was so"},{"startTime":489.85,"endTime":493.21,"body":"different. Vanessa, as I said in my introduction, you have one of the most"},{"startTime":493.21,"endTime":496.81,"body":"interesting resumes around the city. How did you get drawn to"},{"startTime":496.81,"endTime":500.6,"body":"the Spay/Neuter Network and what work do they do? What, What are they"},{"startTime":500.84,"endTime":504.48,"body":"doing? Well, if I go back further, I was, uh, worked with"},{"startTime":504.48,"endTime":508.28,"body":"San Tony Humane. I was on the board of directors back in the early"},{"startTime":509.16,"endTime":512.84,"body":"2000s. Um, transitioned out of that and Kathy mentioned"},{"startTime":512.84,"endTime":516.6,"body":"the, the fostering. I did that grassroots fostering for the last 7 to"},{"startTime":516.6,"endTime":518.92,"body":"8 years and I was part of that"},{"startTime":520.52,"endTime":524.08,"body":"whole, uh, picking up the pets, going to ACS, helping evaluate"},{"startTime":524.08,"endTime":527.93,"body":"them, bringing them home, um, Driving them"},{"startTime":527.93,"endTime":531.73,"body":"up north. I even did a transport one time. It wasn't— it was not easy,"},{"startTime":531.73,"endTime":535.57,"body":"but we did it. And my last foster dog, I was enjoying listening to Kathy"},{"startTime":535.57,"endTime":538.49,"body":"talk about that. My last foster, when I finally said, okay, I'm going to take"},{"startTime":538.49,"endTime":542.25,"body":"a break, now lives in Montreal, Canada, living the high life."},{"startTime":542.25,"endTime":545.77,"body":"She's been in commercials. Her mom is a marketing"},{"startTime":545.93,"endTime":549.65,"body":"executive for a furniture company. So,"},{"startTime":549.65,"endTime":552.65,"body":"you know, and she was dumped in a parking lot, but I, and I picked"},{"startTime":552.65,"endTime":556.23,"body":"her up. You know, in a parking lot one day. So,"},{"startTime":556.23,"endTime":559.83,"body":"um, now transition to Spay/Neuter Network opened the"},{"startTime":560.15,"endTime":563.91,"body":"clinic coming up on 3 years now, 2023, in San Antonio."},{"startTime":563.91,"endTime":567.68,"body":"It's located by the zoo. Um, it's a,"},{"startTime":567.68,"endTime":571.19,"body":"it's a, uh, city building, ACS building, and they were"},{"startTime":572.71,"endTime":576.39,"body":"seeking, um, a contractor and Spay/Neuter Network bid on that. Uh,"},{"startTime":576.39,"endTime":579.67,"body":"we got it, opened it up about 3 years ago."},{"startTime":580.36,"endTime":584.04,"body":"Kathy, You know, the board was looking for someone in San"},{"startTime":584.04,"endTime":587.88,"body":"Antonio to serve. And Kathy said, I know someone, I know"},{"startTime":587.88,"endTime":591.08,"body":"someone who's passionate and has done it all"},{"startTime":591.72,"endTime":595.16,"body":"and recommended me. And that's how I got involved on the board of"},{"startTime":595.4,"endTime":599.08,"body":"directors. And what exactly does the network do? When you say network, this is"},{"startTime":599.08,"endTime":602.72,"body":"obviously part of at least a statewide or maybe national organization. We are"},{"startTime":602.72,"endTime":605.84,"body":"not national. We are statewide. It was founded"},{"startTime":605.84,"endTime":609.4,"body":"in 2004 up in North Texas"},{"startTime":609.56,"endTime":613.22,"body":"in a rural area called Crandall, Texas."},{"startTime":613.22,"endTime":616.9,"body":"Kaufman County, and there was a need. There was a need. There were"},{"startTime":616.9,"endTime":620.42,"body":"animals being dumped out there and there was no vet nearby."},{"startTime":620.42,"endTime":624.1,"body":"So our founder, Bonnie Hill, started this"},{"startTime":625.7,"endTime":628.82,"body":"initiative in that, in that area. Soon with her"},{"startTime":629.38,"endTime":632.9,"body":"success, Dallas, the city of Dallas said, hey, could you help us?"},{"startTime":633.54,"endTime":637.34,"body":"And did a contract with the city of Dallas. We have a contract with the"},{"startTime":637.34,"endTime":641.15,"body":"city of Fort Worth. And then this opportunity came. So we, we're"},{"startTime":641.15,"endTime":644.75,"body":"We are hugely successful in what we do. We stay in our lane. We work"},{"startTime":644.75,"endTime":648.47,"body":"on the spays and neuters, keep 'em low cost, reach out to those"},{"startTime":648.47,"endTime":652.11,"body":"people that are underserved, that maybe don't have"},{"startTime":652.11,"endTime":655.91,"body":"access to it in other ways. The City of San Antonio saw that success and"},{"startTime":655.91,"endTime":658.87,"body":"decided that we were gonna be the right partner for them. So if, uh, a"},{"startTime":658.87,"endTime":662.27,"body":"member of our audience is listening and, um, they"},{"startTime":662.27,"endTime":664.79,"body":"find veterinary services more than they can"},{"startTime":666.07,"endTime":669.19,"body":"afford, uh, are you the network that they should be coming to? And how, how"},{"startTime":669.19,"endTime":672.93,"body":"does that work? I believe they, that we are. A lot of"},{"startTime":705.35,"endTime":708.95,"body":"folks can't get to the clinic, right? They have 2 jobs, 3"},{"startTime":709.11,"endTime":711.99,"body":"jobs. They raise their grandchildren at home. They don't"},{"startTime":713.11,"endTime":716.87,"body":"drive. So we have, we started a transport"},{"startTime":717.67,"endTime":721.31,"body":"program and we have a vehicle that on every, any"},{"startTime":721.31,"endTime":724.95,"body":"given day is in a different part of the city and people make"},{"startTime":724.95,"endTime":728.59,"body":"their reservations and they show up to that meeting point."},{"startTime":729.22,"endTime":732.86,"body":"And bring their pets. We check them in right there on site. We have"},{"startTime":732.86,"endTime":735.38,"body":"a driver, he checks them in, he or she checks them"},{"startTime":736.5,"endTime":740.02,"body":"in, puts them on, drives them to our clinic, gets"},{"startTime":740.02,"endTime":743.78,"body":"their surgery and all the other services they may want,"},{"startTime":743.86,"endTime":747.66,"body":"microchip, vaccinations, and then take, take them all back to the"},{"startTime":747.86,"endTime":751.34,"body":"drop-off point at the end of the day. We've had people that are like so"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":751.34,"endTime":754.66,"body":"00 in the"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":754.66,"endTime":758.3,"body":"morning. They can't go and stand in line. So that is one of the things"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":758.3,"endTime":762.12,"body":"I'm most proud of is because it's definitely helping helping people"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":762.12,"endTime":765.8,"body":"overcome barriers to access. And talk about affordability a"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":765.8,"endTime":768.8,"body":"little bit. And I say that as a, um, our"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":769.76,"endTime":773.52,"body":"family, um, I think collectively, uh, has about 5"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":773.76,"endTime":777.521,"body":"rescue animals. And, um, we've been stunned in"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":777.521,"endTime":780.72,"body":"the last few years by the rising costs of veterinary"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":780.88,"endTime":783.6,"body":"services, particularly as private equity is"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":784.16,"endTime":787.96,"body":"purchasing multiple, uh, veterinary practices that were traditionally family-owned"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":787.96,"endTime":791.79,"body":"or locally owned. And the costs had just soared. But"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":791.87,"endTime":795.67,"body":"you guys advertise yourselves as affordable. So what does that mean"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":795.67,"endTime":799.15,"body":"for somebody that's showing up at that, at that vehicle in one of the inner"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":799.15,"endTime":802.83,"body":"city neighborhoods and getting their dog spayed or neutered? Well, that's a great"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":802.83,"endTime":806.07,"body":"question because we, with the contract with the city, there"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":806.07,"endTime":809.91,"body":"are 27 zip codes. If a resident lives in those"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":809.91,"endTime":813.71,"body":"zip codes, they qualify for free services. And so that transport's"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":813.71,"endTime":817.48,"body":"going into those zip codes also. So for those folks, you know, they can access free"},{"speaker":"grateful because they have to be at their job at 7:30 or 8","startTime":829.08,"endTime":832.28,"body":"services.
