E16: Chiropractic care transformed his life, now he's doing the same for others
Have you ever wondered if those chronic headaches or persistent back pain are just "normal" parts of life you must endure? Dr. Mark Oberg's story might change your perspective forever.
Dr. Oberg's journey into chiropractic began with his own suffering—debilitating childhood migraines that regularly sent him home from school to lie in darkened rooms with wet paper towels on his forehead. Everything changed when a football injury in junior high led him to a chiropractor. During treatment for that injury, his migraines mysteriously disappeared. This transformative experience sparked his mission to help others find similar relief without drugs or surgery.
Since establishing Oberg Chiropractic in 2004, Dr. Mark has specialized in correcting subluxations—areas of the spine that prevent proper brain-body communication. He challenges the misconception that headaches are normal (they're common, but not normal) and that chiropractic adjustments must be painful or involve extreme twisting positions. The science is startling: pressure on a nerve equivalent to the weight of a dime can reduce nerve transmission by 60%, affecting your body's ability to function optimally.
What distinguishes Dr. Oberg's approach is his commitment to measuring progress and addressing root causes rather than merely masking symptoms. Through careful assessment, including X-rays when necessary, he creates treatment plans aimed at long-term structural improvements. This methodology prevents patients from dealing with the same problems repeatedly, offering true healing rather than temporary patches.
Despite facing significant challenges, particularly during COVID when unable to serve patients when they needed care most, Dr. Mark's practice has thrived primarily through word-of-mouth referrals—testament to the results his patients experience. When not helping patients achieve better health, he enjoys family time, outdoor activities, and playing with his dog.

Speaker 2:Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a dependable, affordable chiropractor? One might be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, dr Mark Oberg, with Oberg Chiropractic. Dr Mark, how's it going?
Speaker 1:It's going good. Thanks for having me.
Speaker 2:We're excited to learn all about you and your business. Tell us about your practice.
Speaker 1:I've been in practice since 2004, and I specialize in helping remove subluxations, areas of the spine that aren't moving right, that aren't allowing the brain and body to communicate the way they should so that the body can perform its best.
Speaker 2:How did you get into this business?
Speaker 1:I suffered from migraine headaches as a child and they were bad enough that it would cause me to have to go down to the nurse in school and lay on one of those old green army cots with a folded up wet brown paper towel put on my forehead and wait there until my mom was able to come pick me up from school, and then I'd go home and I'd lay in her bed in complete dark and complete quiet as long as I could and would hope to fall asleep so that that headache would go away. But later in junior high I got injured playing football and my parents took me to a chiropractor to help with that injury, and while I was getting care for that my migraine headaches went away. So I decided at that point that I wanted to help other people, without drugs and surgery, be able to have the same relief and be able to live life the way that I did without those headaches, rather than prior to those headaches.
Speaker 2:What are some myths or misconceptions in your industry?
Speaker 1:Thinking of headaches and you asked that question that headaches are normal. They're not. They're common, but that is not a normal thing In terms of the industry. Maybe somebody is afraid that I'm going to twist them. I'm going to turn their neck and twist it, or lay them on their side and turn them into a pretzel, and not every adjustment is like that. In fact, often I don't do those adjustments. Sometimes that's needed, but we can often adjust without that and it can be a very pleasant experience that doesn't cause a lot of pain. And another misconception is that an adjustment might be painful.
Speaker 2:Who are your target customers? How do you attract them now?
Speaker 1:You know what my best patients come from referrals and the old adage that birds of a feather flock together is true in this situation. When people come in and get good results and they tell their friends about that. Those are my best patients and how I attract most of my patients now. But we've done all kinds of different things in the past. We've even done a newspaper ad. So a little little bit different now we want to run a newspaper ad. But yeah, we've attracted them all kinds of different ways.
Speaker 2:Outside of work. What do you do for?
Speaker 1:fun. I love to spend time with my family. I enjoy watching sports on TV, I enjoy camping and hiking and playing with my dog, and so those are all fun things that we do, but I enjoy spending time with the family.
Speaker 2:Let's switch gears. Can you describe a hardship or life challenge that you overcame and how it made you stronger? What comes to mind?
Speaker 1:Sure, I've been in practice, like I said, since 2004. So I've gone through a few challenges over the years. We went through 2008 when things were kind of challenging in the industry, in terms of just all industry but then the biggest challenge would have been during COVID, and I was quite excited about that, not that we were having COVID, but for the opportunity to help people through that situation. In fact, there is good evidence that back during the Spanish flu that people got a lot of help with chiropractic, but the challenge, of course, was that being shut down, I wasn't able to serve and help people the way that I wanted to, and so you asked how did that help me get through? How am I now, since we got through that?
Speaker 2:And how it made you stronger.
Speaker 1:Yeah, thank you. I'm stronger now, I think, because I can communicate the need for chiropractic a little bit better and you know, we just have a good base that was of people who needed care that was able to carry us through that time.
Speaker 2:Mark, please tell our listeners how one thing they should remember about Oberg Chiropractic.
Speaker 1:One thing they should remember about Oberg Chiropractic, yeah, is that I'm not just looking to help with pain relief, we're looking to get to the cause and we measure those changes, as needed with x-ray if that's the case, so that we make sure that we are making change. We make sure that we are making change. The pressure on a nerve as little as the weight of a dime is enough to cause 60% nerve transmission decrease, and so it's critical that we're measuring those changes and that we aren't just patching it. That way we can make long-term changes so people don't have to deal with the same problem over and over.
Speaker 2:How can our listeners learn more about Oberg Chiropractic?
Speaker 1:They can go to the website, so they can go to obergchirocom O-B-E-R-G-C-H-I-R-Ocom, or they could call the office 970-207-0274. And we would offer a free consultation to see if they would benefit from chiropractic care.
Speaker 2:Well, mark. Dr Mark, I really appreciate you being on our show. We wish you and your chiropractic practice the best moving forward. Thank you, nick. Thanks for having me.
