E33: This resistance band workout will find muscles you never knew you had.
Resistance bands could be the missing link in your fitness journey, and Theresa Rudel is proving why at Board30fc in Fort Collins. With over 25 years of training experience, Theresa has discovered that these versatile bands create a dynamic workout experience that engages muscles you didn't even know you had.
Theresa's approach to fitness transcends traditional methods. Using a specialized board with strategically placed bands—ankle "shackles," wall-mounted bands, and overhead "sky bands"—her 45-minute high-intensity sessions deliver remarkable results through one-minute work intervals followed by 20-second recovery periods. The multi-directional resistance engages the core constantly, builds strength, and improves endurance without requiring hours in the gym.
What makes Board 30 FC truly special is its inclusivity. Theresa's most popular class serves active seniors in their late 70s and 80s who demonstrate balance and strength that often surpasses much younger individuals. From serious athletes to those rehabilitating injuries, everyone finds their place at Board30fc. Theresa's own journey through breast cancer demonstrates the power of fitness—her doctors credited her workout habits with her exceptional recovery from multiple surgeries.
The pandemic couldn't stop Theresa's mission either. When lockdowns threatened her business, she personally delivered bands to clients' homes and created video workouts to keep her community active. This resilience mirrors the message she shares with all who enter her studio: "You are an athlete in your own way."

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Nick George.
Speaker 2:Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of an expert hit training place? One might be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, teresa Rudell. Teresa, how's it going?
Speaker 3:Good, how are you?
Speaker 2:Excellent. Tell us all about Board 30 FC.
Speaker 3:I will Thanks for having me on your podcast. So what we of redefine fitness through innovative high intensity resistant band system, and it's designed to deliver an overall body workout. So it's specialized board equipment with bands. We have ankle bands that we put on as I call them shackles sometimes, and we have wall-mounted bands and then we have overhead sky bands. So we have bands all over, and so the diverse anchor points allow us to create kind of a dynamic multiple direction resistance that every muscle group will be used particularly. I think it emphasizes on the core training. Even though you don't know it, you're using your core. We don't have a choice. So the resistance, the core, it's a um, high intensity workout. So it is on. We do a minute on, 20 seconds off for recovery, and this um what the high intensity is shown to prove. It just maximize calorie burn, build strength and it helps your endurance and in a time efficient, because our program is 45 minutes. You're in and you're out, so that's about describes as much as I can?
Speaker 2:How did you?
Speaker 3:get into this business. That was funny. I've been a trainer for 25 years at a club and I would use the bands all the time. And then me and my husband wanted to open up something of our own. We had a little extra money so we looked at the Orange Stairies and all the typical ones. I'm like, nah, not, not integrated with me, don't like it.
Speaker 3:Then I found this it's a. It just got put on for a franchise that week and it's really an LLC. So we talked to the lady that designed it I did not design it, fleury Mahoney did and I wanted to go see her. So we went to Santa Fe, which is the flagship, fell in love with it, stayed a week, got a master training training, came back, opened it in Fort Collins to share it with everybody and then we bought into the company also. So we, it's kind of it's not a franchise LLC, so I have freedom on what I can do. Being a trainer at for 30 years, I didn't want to be locked down telling me what to do. So that's how it all began and seven years later, still here during COVID. It was rough but we made it. I would hand out bands to all my clients that I did have. I would drive it to the house and then I would videotape workouts with one band. It was awesome.
Speaker 2:So yeah, I never looked back.
Speaker 3:What are some myths or misconceptions in your industry? I think that you can't build muscle, which you can. The more resistance you have, the more you build. It's bands will snap easy. They they won't. The acre points hold them in. They're, for sissies, wrong. Look at the pros using them. They're a rehab, they're a fitness, they're a one-stop shop. So it's easier on the joints than, um, using weights, even though I still love weights, I'll do those once in a while. I do a circuit, I incorporate weights, but I think it's easier on the joints and you. When you do the bands, you would be surprised like you find muscles that you don't even know you had those intricate little muscles. People are like, wow, do you even know you had those intricate little muscles? People are like, wow, do you even know? I had one there. So it's not just for sissies, it's for all fitness level.
Speaker 2:Who are your target customers and how are you attracting them now?
Speaker 3:I have everything from runners to Rehab like since rehabbing their hips or their shoulders. I have an active ager group and that is my most popular. I have to turn down in classes, the waiting list, because I work on so much balance. It's amazing how strong they are. They're 80 years old, 85. I think the youngest is maybe 77 in that class and they could do stuff that literally 40 year olds can't within reasons. But so I target to everyone. It's word of mouth, Instagram, my website, that's about it. Yeah, I can do every fitness level there is.
Speaker 2:Have you done or thought about doing your own podcast?
Speaker 3:No, I'm not a public speaker.
Speaker 1:I can get in front of a crowd and do a workout.
Speaker 3:Don't make me speak. Well, I guess I do talk a lot, I babble a lot.
Speaker 2:It doesn't seem like your first rodeo. So outside of work, what do you do for?
Speaker 3:fun. Thank you, I appreciate that. Oh gosh, triathlons, hiking. I'm a big cyclist, I'm a big trail runner, I like to swim, I like to dance, I like to go get margaritas, hang with friends. I just love life. But I like to be outside a lot and I love my studio. That's my other, my other home.
Speaker 2:Let's switch gears. Can you describe a hardship or a life challenge that you overcame and how it made you stronger? What comes to mind?
Speaker 3:I think. Well, when I had breast cancer Probably I found out I had breast cancer. My mom had a double mastectomy, then I had to have a hysterectomy because I had the BRCA and so the BRCA test was more about having the BRCA test that I had that I was positive in. Positive was higher risk of ovarian cancer. So then I had like I don't know six, seven surgeries that year and I remember when I found out I had it, I'm like, um, I have a business, so hurry up. And I felt like a stuffer bear, take everything out, put some parts back in and I'll be good to go. But that was rough, I think, more on my family than anyone. My kids were scared, but I just did what I needed to do. It's all in the attitude. And here's the other thing the doctor said because you work out, because your muscle tone is good, this is amazing how your recovery will be, how it went.
Speaker 3:So it was kind of a lifesaver with my workout habits. So that was a tough time but got through it, I believe it, Teresa.
Speaker 2:tell our listeners one thing that they should take away from this about Board 30 FC.
Speaker 3:One thing they should remember it's all fitness level. Like you don't think you're an athlete, walk in my room and you'll learn. You'll know, you'll learn to be an athlete. You are an athlete in your own way. Yeah, it's for everybody.
