E50: How a Mother's Quest to Heal Her Child Transformed Modern Nutrition

Nick George Season 1 Episode 50

What happens when Western medicine has no answers for your child's suffering? For Dr. Kristy Hall, it meant pioneering a new path through nutritional science that would eventually transform thousands of lives.

Dr. Hall's remarkable journey began as a desperate mother seeking answers for her chronically ill toddler. Despite consulting numerous specialists, no one could explain why her daughter was covered with angry eczema and had no energy to play. It wasn't until meeting a naturopathic doctor that Dr. Hall discovered the transformative power of holistic nutrition—a discovery that would eventually lead her to launch Living Well Nutrition in 2010.

But Dr. Hall's expertise extends far beyond basic nutrition. After learning about the MTHFR gene and its profound impact on health, she pursued master's level work in epigenetics and nutrigenetics, exploring how specific nutrients can alter genetic expression. More recently, she completed her doctorate in nutritional psychiatry, focusing on brain health to address conditions ranging from anxiety and PTSD to dementia.

Perhaps most compelling is how Dr. Hall's professional journey intersects with her personal trauma. After surviving a decade of threats and violence in a dysfunctional marriage—experiences that triggered what she describes as a "cell danger response" in her body—she rejected pharmaceutical solutions and instead applied her nutritional expertise to heal herself. This firsthand experience with trauma recovery now fuels her passion for working with first responders and others overwhelmed by chronic stress.

"When you take responsibility for your health, you can reverse a lot of what's happening, and you can do it most often without pharmaceuticals," Dr. Hall emphasizes. Whether you're struggling with unexplained symptoms, mental health challenges, or the physical effects of trauma, Living Well Nutrition offers a different approach—one that restores balance within your body and optimizes brain function. Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of an approach to health and wellness that is focused on restoring your health by restoring your balance within your body? One might be closer than you think within your body. One might be closer than you think. Today, I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, dr Christy Hall, with Living Well Nutrition. Dr Christy, how's it going?

Speaker 3:

It's going great, nick, thanks so much for having me.

Speaker 2:

We're excited to learn all about you and your business. Tell us about your company or practice.

Speaker 3:

Mm-hmm. So I launched into nutrition as a profession about I think I started in 2010 after being very interested in it for a number of years. I was a mom of five children and it was my second child that had lots of health issues, and so I started dabbling in the world of nutrition. I come from a very Western medical background, from a family of doctors and dentists, and holistic nutrition was really outside of my area of experience, but after seeing my daughter's health restored through nutrition, I knew there was something to it, so I started that in 2010.

Speaker 3:

And then, after doing that for a while, I learned about genetics. I had a client call me and tell me that she had the MTHFR gene and I had not heard of it. Back then I did some digging and went wait a minute, I think this describes my family. So then I did a master's level work in epigenetics and what we call now nutrigenetics, because we can use nutrition to change people's genetic expression and thereby restore health, and so that was a fantastic addition to my practice and I've been using that to really help people get targeted support for their health. And then, most recently, I got my doctorate in nutritional psychiatry. So really focusing on what's going on inside the brain so that we can prevent dementia or reverse dementia or health PTSD, depression, anxiety. There's a lot that we can do with very targeted nutrition.

Speaker 2:

Where does this auxiliary fuel source come from that got you into this business?

Speaker 3:

Well, when you're a mom, right, you definitely have whatever energy you need to help your kids. And when my second daughter was born and she was so sick, I really. I went to Western Medicine first and my pediatrician agreed that my daughter wasn't well and we ran tests and they found nothing. I said she's fine. And I said, you know she's not. And so then off we go to the allergist and we went down the Western medicine, go see all the different specialists and everybody said she's fine. She was covered in head to toe with red, angry eczema. She had no energy as a toddler, didn't want to even play, and so I had to go a different direction and I ended up with a naturopathic doctor who had been a surgical nurse and in the Atlanta area and Dr Millie she's still in practice today was fantastic and she introduced me to the world of holistic health and that just changed my entire perspective. So that is what fueled me getting started.

Speaker 3:

But years later I had my own trauma and I went into what's called the cell danger response. And when your body goes into the cell danger response, Everything changes. Your body's ability to detoxify shuts down, the cellular receptors begin to shut down, your digestion shuts down. Everything stops because the body thinks it's in just a life-threatening condition that doesn't end. It's not like you're almost in a car accident or you're in a car accident and then it's over In the cell. Danger response you get stuck, and I got stuck and had a horrific heavy metal toxicity. I ended up being told I had fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, and so I knew the answer was not the antidepressant I was being offered. I knew that I needed to go back to the drawing board and look at nutrition, and so that's what fueled round two for me.

Speaker 2:

It's clear to me who your target customers are, but I don't think that they know who they are. Could you tell us who your target customers are, articulate that and how you're trying to attract them now?

Speaker 3:

Right. So we work a lot with first responders. My husband was a first responder for 18 years and an Army veteran, so that's who we spend a lot of our time with. But really anyone who's had trauma or just long-term chronic stress that has tipped the scales from okay, stressful day to overwhelm, right. And so when someone has tipped the scales and they're in overwhelm, that's who we want to help, because we can get them back into balance and we can really defrag their brain so that they're optimal again.

Speaker 2:

Have you ever thought about doing your own podcast?

Speaker 3:

I have not really.

Speaker 2:

Outside of work. What do you do for fun?

Speaker 3:

Oh goodness, I love to scuba dive. Most peaceful place on earth is about 100 feet under the surface. I love to snow ski and garden and I am a nerd at heart, and so I love reading research studies and things like that.

Speaker 2:

Let's switch gears, and you may have already done this. Stop me, if you did, can you describe a hardship or a life challenge that you overcame and how it made you stronger? What comes to mind?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, you know, for me it really was that time when I went through. I had my own trauma and it was really getting out of a very dysfunctional marriage and we had a lot of life threatening things happen. My life was threatened repeatedly, my life was threatened repeatedly. My home was broken into, my children were told that they were going to be murdered on a couple of different occasions, and so that was. You know, that's something that I don't wish on anyone. It was a horrible, horrible decade in my life, but I overcame it and you can too. You know people that have gone through that kind of trauma can recover.

Speaker 2:

It's a lot more common than people think these days. Please tell our Dr Christy, please tell our customers one thing that they should absolutely remember about living well nutrition.

Speaker 3:

You know, I think it is so important, when you take responsibility for your health, to realize that you can reverse a lot of what's happening, and you can do it most often without pharmaceuticals. And so I just encourage people to look, take a different path. The pharmaceutical will always be there if you need it, but so many times we can get you back into balance and you won't need that pharmaceutical at all.
