Good morning, my name is Joe Rixonand this is the Rixon Sports Report - the fastest three minutes in sports business with your headlines for today.
BBC is reporting that Trump’s Aberdeenshire Golf course will host the revived Scottish Championship. The August event is not expected to feature many of the world’s top golfers, as the St. Jude’s Classic, part of the FedEx Cup playoffs and the Liv Golf Chicago event will be played that same weekend. However, it does signal a willingness for entities to engage with Trump golf properties to bring events there. This comes on the heels of reports from the Guardian that R&A, the organizing body for the Open Championship, is being lobbied by the government to return of the Open to Trump-owned Turnberry in 2028, the first time they would have hosted the event since 2009.
Vivid Seats with a horrific day on Wall Street. Sportico with the story as shares tumble 39% on a 14% drop in revenue compared to the same quarter last year and total marketplace order sales down 20% year-over-year. The company blaming the economic uncertainty. Since peaking at over $14 in 2021, the stock has dropped to $1.91 a share.
Bob Pockrass (Pockriiice) from Fox Sports with the scoop that NASCAR will be moving its 2026 championship to Homestead Miami Speedway, with a new location as part of the rotation in 2027. Phoenix Raceway, which has hosted the championship since 2020, will be part of the rotation for championship locations. Other tracks in the rotation were not announced, but only warm-weather locations are reported to be considered. NASCAR is still in the midst of working on its new playoff format, and the theory is that a rotation of championship locations should provide more competitive balance for the finalists.
There will definitely be no Triple Crown opportunity in 2025 as Sovereignty, winner of the Ketucky Derby, will not participate in the Preakness Stakes. The Courier-Journal broke the story Tuesday. Trainer Bill Mott did not provide an explanation for the decision to withdraw Sovereignty from the Preakness coming up on May 17th, but did confirm they compete at the Belmont on June 7th at Saratoga.
Last week Front Office Sports had a great breakdown of the new $3.8 billion stadium coming to Washington, DC to host the Commanders. How did it get done? Josh Harris found a way to pay for more of it himself, with $2.7 billion coming from him. The rest will be supplied by the DC going towards stadium costs, parking and infrastructure and will include 5,000 housing units, with a large percentage of those being affordable. There are a few more hurdles, with DC council approval and some neighborhood opposition, but for sports fans in the DC area it is certainly an exciting time between the new Commanders stadium and the renovations to Capital One Arena.
Thanks again for listening, this is Joe Rixon with the Rixon Sports Report. Have a great Wednesday.
