Have a great Memorial Day Weekend and remember why we have this holiday - to honor those that sacrificed everything for this country.

Thank you for listening to the Rixon Sports Report, weekend edition, for Saturday, May 24th, 2025.

The Tush Push Survives! The Eagles and 9 other teams banded together to save the football play according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.  Yahoo! Sports with the full breakdown of Eagles allies.  Rule changes votes like this one require 24 “Yes” votes, and this fell two short.  Eagles twitter was undefeated Thursday when the news broke.  Definitely worth checking that out.

The unexpected winner in that Tush Push vote? a woman named Deanna Slamans.  Don’t know who she is?  You’re not alone.  She’s the serial entrepreneur and graphic designer from Hershey, Pennsylvania who was the first to trademark the term “tush push”, beating the Eagles by a few weeks on their submission.  Neither the Eagles or the NFL have filed objections to her claim, so we’ll see how this winds up but Deanna has made it clear she didn’t file the trademark claim only to sell it.  More at Sportico.

President Trump’s team announcing that the proposed College Sports Commission co-chaired by former Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban and Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell had been put on hold as Senator Ted Cruz of Texas attempts to find co-sponsors for his legislation attempting to address some of the issues, but bipartisan support seems to be waning and the SEC and Big Ten didn’t like the direction the Commission was taking, believing Cody Campbell’s plan to pool conference media right monies to help smaller leagues facing financial difficulties.  Sources from the SEC and Big Ten claimed they believe Campbell was looking out for Texas Tech, their league, the Big 12 and G5 conferences.  SEC and Big Ten didn’t seem keen on trickle down college football economics.  CBS Sports with the full story.

Sticking with the White House, Front Office Sports with the breakdown of how the new “Big, Beautiful Bill” making its way through congress could hurt team owners, mainly through the removal of amortization, which is the the biggest way owners save money on their taxes. Owners can currently deduct the cost of buying a team over 15 years from their taxable income, which cuts the amount they have to pay on tax significantly—even if the team is profitable.  The bill would maintain that 15 year timeline but max out at 50% of the value.  We’ll see if this winds up in the final bill, as the Senate has made it clear they will be making changes to the House version that passed this week.

The final episode of Around the Horn aired Friday, the show wrapping up a two decade run that approached nearly 5,000 episodes.  Some original guests making their appearance, like Bob Ryan, Bill Plaschke and Woody Paige.  Reali started on the show when he was 24, and stated “he grew up on the show.’  Definitely a bitter-sweet ending this afternoon for the ESPN main-stay.  The New York Post with some highlights and quotes.

Thanks again for listening to the Rixon Sports Report.  We’ll take off Monday for the Memorial Day holiday and will be back on Tuesday, May 27th.  As we enjoy our cookouts and the long weekend let us not forget the reason for this holiday, to reflect and remember those that sacrificed everything for our country.  Enjoy your weekend!
