Finding My Voice

Season 1 Episode 2

Send us a text

Ever wonder what happens when a recovering people-pleaser finds her voice and decides to start a podcast? Welcome to "Let's Talk About It," your new favorite corner of the internet where we drop the filters and dive into the conversations we all need but rarely have.

From the moment I started doing hair at age seven to becoming a serial entrepreneur, fitness coach, and now podcast host, my journey has been shaped by learning to put myself first after years of seeking validation from others. A medical condition in my hands forced me to pivot from my cosmetology career and embrace a wellness journey that taught me the profound truth that "the gym starts at home" and "the main muscle to build is your mind."

This podcast was born from my desire to create the space I desperately needed when trying to find my authentic voice. Each week, we'll unpack everything from culture shocks to dating hot takes, mental health struggles to identity crises, and all the spicy topics your group chat whispers about. Nothing is off-limits – whether we're discussing ADHD challenges, confidence-building practices, relationship dynamics, or cultural taboos that deserve the spotlight.

If you've ever felt too much, not enough, or caught between different expectations, this is your sanctuary. We're serving real talk alongside virtual tacos and tequila, creating a community where healing, humor, and honesty coexist. New episodes drop every Tuesday (CST), so hit subscribe, leave a review, and join me on this journey of self-discovery and unfiltered conversation. Tag me @letstalkaboutitpod on Instagram and let me know what topics you're dying to talk about!

Speaker 1:

Hey y'all, welcome to the second episode of let's Talk About it, the podcast where we serve real talk, culture, wellness, lifestyle, of course, and the kind of convos you only hear when the drinks are flowing and the tacos are hot that's right, hot, you know, with that nice cheese pull. I'm your host, rookie, and today we're keeping it personal yeah, that's right, personal. You're going to find out who I am, why I started this show and why this is about to be your new favorite corner of the Internet. Who am I so? That's actually a great question. I'm a mother, a serial entrepreneur, and when I say serial entrepreneur, I do mean serial. Like your homegirl is a cosmetologist. I specialize in locks, natural hair care.

Speaker 1:

Former business, owner of Hijab, is Hair Studio, now fitness coach and owner of Rookie Fit, as well as the host of the let's Talk About it podcast, like a first-gen storyteller, a recovering people pleaser with a mic this time and I've lived through a lot of chapters, some spicy and some sweet, and some that even tried to break me but built me instead. Whether it was navigating my identity or shaking off other people's expectations of me, or chasing joy in the middle of chaos, I realized something the realest conversations seem to always happen when we drop the filters and just talk about it. And when I'm saying like, talk about it, I mean let's go over some things, like when I say your girl was a people pleaser. I do mean people pleaser like not knowing the true meaning of being alone, like you know, buying friends and what I mean by buying friends is that you don't know that you're buying them right, because when you're growing up you really don't have a true understanding of what it means to reciprocate. You know Someone gives you something genuinely and in return you give them back. You know other than their birthday, or you know Christmas, who's just giving gifts. Sometimes you people please because you deal with lack of confidence in areas you know wanting to be accepted, wanting to be validated, and you do certain gestures to make those people you know stay around. And eventually you grow out of it. And when you do, you learn that the best person to please is you. No-transcript.

Speaker 1:

It all started when I was seven. I started doing hair, I was braiding, and that's where my true passion began, with everything in life, you know. So I've basically been doing hair since I was seven. I'm 32 now, so it's been a long time doing hair and because of me doing hair for so long.

Speaker 1:

Eventually it caused me to have a catatonic in my hands which made me realize that again, although I thought that I had overcame people-pleasing as a child, I realized in my young age that I was filled with people-pleasing by doing it through the hair field. And the reason why I said I was filled with people-pleasing was because, although I had the passion to make others feel good and enjoying it, I never took the time out to take care of myself and find balance. So this is why I said I still hadn't learned that I still operated on the brand of wanting to be accepted by others and validated through their expectations of me. So along the way came this condition in my head which caused me to have to do more self-reflect, self-love and self-care. And this is where my wellness and fitness journey came along and through that it made me realize that love for yourself is bigger than just your physical appearance. The gym starts at home. The main muscle to build will be your mind, and once you build the discipline of a strong mind, you can build the discipline of a strong future. Of a strong mind, you can build the discipline of a strong future. So I appreciate my journey as a hairstylist, as a cosmetologist, as a lock fishing, as a natural hair care specialist, because it brought me to a point in my life to where I had to learn to love myself a little harder. So not only I can love myself, but I can with gratitude, abundance, love and transparency. I appreciate every trial, tribulation and everything that came along the way to make us to become who I am today. And who I am today is a strong, resilient woman, one that will rise no matter the occasion, one that will continue to thrive even in the midst of the darkest storms, one that would hold herself accountable even when she knows she doesn't want to, a woman that stands for just, a woman with integrity, a woman with morals and a woman that can now walk in truth and latitude as I continue each and every episode of this show. So who I am today is love, peace, abundance and rookie. Your friend, your homegirl, but, most importantly, a healer. And that is exactly who I am. So I will say why this podcast.

Speaker 1:

This podcast is the show I needed when I was trying to find my voice. It's where we unpack everything from culture shocks to dating hot takes, from self-worth to starting over. No fluff, no fake stuff, fake stuff, just real deep conversations, real raw and sometimes ridiculous parts of life. Like ridiculous, like, like ridiculous. Okay, and I didn't want to keep doing surface level small talk. I wanted something that made people feel seen, challenged and low-key entertained. And when I say low-key entertained like, I mean low-key entertained, like did you guys tune in to episode one like, have you heard what happened on episode my guy? We covered, like enhancement pills and stuff. Oh my gosh, like it got real spicy on that episode. But here's what to expect Every week juicy episodes with dope gifs, spicy solo rants, unfiltered hot takes and maybe a little tea. Talking about real stuff Like that.

Speaker 1:

One time I was going through an identity phase, like a real life identity phase, like it was one point in life like I really didn't know where I was going or where to go, let alone how to start. So what I did was, you know, I just slowed down and started to take things one day at a time, because that's all you can do, and eventually I figured it all out. Now your girl knows her hair color, that she needs to keep her popping yeah, I mean popping. Popping that lip liner too. Don't forget that lip gloss boo. And I'm telling you like I've really been through some things.

Speaker 1:

Like let's talk about mental health. Nobody talks about that. Nobody talks about how a lot of us are operating under the realms of having ADHD. Like I don't think you guys understand, like, how hard it is for me to manage 10 different things and I can barely pay attention to one. However, still, I rise.

Speaker 1:

But let's talk about confidence. Yeah, something I had to build. Like, every day, you have to literally wake up and feed your mind with the best thoughts ever. Like look in that mirror and say, hey, girl, today I choose you. You're beautiful, you're dope, you're resilient and we're going to do this. Oh, and don't get me started on relationships. Like, when it comes to relationships, I'm not gonna even lie. I am such a freaking lover girl. Like when I say I love a girl, I'm talking love a girl. Like I want to give him manicures, pedicures. Sure, I'm gonna wear your face up. I want to give you a haircut, like, and if I don't know how to collect trip and believe, baby, I'm going to pay for it. And we talking, yeah, baby, just call me great, but this is why I have to protect me because I've been in some crazy relationships. Actually, the last relationship is the reason, part of the reason why I'm actually going to just move into a lot of food, and this is why we're here landing on this podcast and we both talk about it, but that's in future episodes.

Speaker 1:

Baby, it's so spicy. When I tell you it's spicy, hmm, just make sure you got your tea, or should I say your tequila? Either way, have both of them. Boo, get them tacos too. Just make sure you got your tea, or should I say your tequila? Either way, have both of them. Boo, get them tacos too.

Speaker 1:

And don't forget, we're going to touch bases on the taboos, yeah, and even the stuff we whisper about in the group chat. Yeah, I'm talking about y'all group chat. Yep, I'm clocking it. Nothing is off the table. And we're going to make sure every convo feeds your soul and at least makes you laugh, while revealing we gotta laugh, we'll cry later. So let me tell you a little bit about why you will definitely, definitely love it here.

Speaker 1:

If you love podcasts that make you feel like therapy, like and when I say therapy, I'm talking therapy like we have episodes coming up where we're doing sound bowl meditations in the morning. Well, for me it'll be in the morning. For you guys, once the episode's released, you can feel whatever you feel. But yeah, like it's very, very nice, like we're going to do a lot of different healing things on the pod as well, on the pot as well. Just, you know, think of it as like a group chat meltdown. You know how everybody in a group chat just get like yeah, you know, actually I'm going to take it a step further you know the meltdown you have during your birthday week when you're trying to get everything together and you want to make sure everything is on point and it just seems like it's not freaking working. Yeah, yeah, mm-hmm, that type of meltdown All in one baby. If that's what you're looking for, welcome on home. This is exactly the pot you need to be on.

Speaker 1:

Okay, if you ever felt too much, not enough or stuck in between culture, ideas or expectations, come on, come on. This is space for you. Yep, you, I'm talking to you, yes. And if you just here, okay, I'm talking to you. Nosy mofos, if you just here to be nosy, come on, come on, come on, come on, we want you to. But, most importantly, if you here for the good vibes, the tacos and the tequila. You're on the right taco truck, boo, and I do mean the right one, because, baby, we got all the tacos over here. What flavor do you want? And when I say all, all except the swine, we don't do no, we don't mess with swine over here. But, yeah, you're definitely on the right taco truck. So here's what I need from you, though.

Speaker 1:
