Additionally, Emily didn't know Encino was a place, Kate forgot about Tequila worms, and Mark describes this as a formative movie for him as a child.

SPEAKER_03Yes, we are we are gathered uh here today to introduce my my husband. It doesn't have the same ring as my wife. Um, but uh yes, uh this is this is Mark's first time on the podcast. So thank you for joining us from a room away from me.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely, and thank you for having me.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So as our uh uh your first time guesting on the podcast, definitely not the last time. There are plenty of movies that you need both of us to see, I'm sure. Um so we uh we like to get an idea of your taste in movies. So do you have three favorite movies?
SPEAKER_01I do. Uh it is tough to pick. I lean more into like horror as sort of my genre, horror suspense. Uh so my all-time favorite is gonna be The Exorcist.

SPEAKER_01Uh there have been so many other, so many other good horror movies recently, though. Uh Hereditary is up there. And uh, let's see. Honestly, this on a lighter note, this movie is probably one of my favorites.
SPEAKER_08Okay. I was wondering.
SPEAKER_03I was wondering if this was gonna make the list. Yeah, because this is it's funny because I think Hereditary came out while we were already together, but the other two, this one and um The Exorcist, I did not see until you and I started dating. Um, because I was a big old scaredy cat and I didn't like horror movies, and then I watched more of them with you. Um, but yeah, so we are we are discussing uh one of your top three favorite movies, um, 1992's Incino Man. Um now, Emily, we talked a little bit about this, but uh, why why didn't you see this movie?
SPEAKER_02How'd you miss this movie? How'd you miss it? Well, it's easy to miss when you literally don't know it exists. I knew nothing about it, had never heard of it. Nobody has ever talked to me about it. And if it's been referenced in anything, I didn't get it. Because I don't I don't know how widespread you will tell me the fun facts, but like I don't know how widespread this, if it's like more cold clear, like I don't I don't know the expanse of this movie. Yeah. So if there was anything referenced, I did not understand it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So there aren't there aren't as many, like when I was doing research, there aren't as many references like in other media. It just, it seems like something that like it kind of pops up every now and then. It's like, hey, this movie exists, and like kind of vague references, but it's also like a concept that it's like, oh, you know, like a caveman frozen and ice. Like that's just a reference that exists outside of this movie, anyways. Um, but yeah, it was it was all context that like you, you know, didn't have, never having heard have heard of it.
SPEAKER_02Right. And then and then finding out before we watched it that it was a comedy, because that was also not clear. And yeah, I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know where Encina was. I didn't know it was a place. Um, so that's totally on me. I was like, oh, it's a place, got it. That makes more sense now. Um, but then yeah, seeing seeing our first hour and a half movie was exciting.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Shocking, shocking that the Disney Channel original movie couldn't keep it under an hour and a half, and yet here we are.
SPEAKER_02No. Although when I was looking up to find where to stream this, somebody I don't know if the internet's correct. So please let me know with your fun facts. Somebody said something about this being like a Disney movie, and I was like, there's no way. I have Oh god, okay. I have well, hold on, we'll get there.
SPEAKER_03I got lost. I I will tell you now, I got lost in the sauce researching trivia for this. It's it's a gold mine. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Did you get lost in the j- ooose?
SPEAKER_03No, I did not. Well, that's well, that's a perfect segue. Um as the as the man who introduced me to this movie, um, tell us tell us about your your history with this movie that came out when you were three years old.
SPEAKER_01I did not know I was gonna be a like Pauly Shore fan, like at all. But something about just how chill and funny and stupid this movie was, it just stuck with me. And there were so many good, like memorable kids being kids. Like lines.
SPEAKER_02Did you see it at three?
SPEAKER_01No, I did not see it at three.
SPEAKER_03I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I couldn't tell you anything about it. Was it like middle school or like um I probably saw this movie before we've before we moved to North Carolina, so I was younger than nine.
SPEAKER_05Oh no.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so like I no, like I was a kid and at least this was formative, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I was gonna say.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna use this as uh research for you now.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, as a person.
SPEAKER_03Noted.
SPEAKER_01This was this this is remember, we we're married. You you can't leave.
SPEAKER_03I signed the contract, the paperwork just binding.
SPEAKER_02I also did, actually. So I was a witness.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, oh gosh, you did. Oh no.
SPEAKER_01But this movie just had so many like fun little bits in it. And just between, I don't know, the nostalgic, like the of the times feel of high school and like the clicks and everything, it just yeah, it it was formative. It was this is, I guess, what high school is gonna be like, except I can't find a caveman.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I gotta be cool.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. That's really funny. So, so was this so this was like your introduction to like Polly Shore and his like entire thing. Okay.
SPEAKER_01It was. It was. I think shortly after this one, I ended up seeing jury duty. Um man, is the other one? He goes he's Amish for however long.
SPEAKER_03Is that son-in-law?
SPEAKER_01It might be son-in-law.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But okay, just a wild rabbit hole of oh, you're just this goofy in every movie you're in.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I did not see this movie until a while into us like dating. Like, I don't I feel like we might have been together for like five years or something. Like, it was a while, and I don't know, I don't know why. Like, I think I've always loved Brendan Fraser, so I I don't think it was anything of like, I don't care about this at all. I think I just did, I think I was like Emily, where I was like, I didn't know anything about it, and so I like didn't understand necessarily. And then it was like, no, you gotta, you gotta watch this. Like, this will explain a lot. And I'm like, okay, these are things that you say. I understand now. But how did it not come up in five years? I have no idea. Oh, go ahead.
SPEAKER_01So I will say, toward the beginning of our relationship, she was reluctant to watch anything that I recommended.
SPEAKER_08Oh.
SPEAKER_01Because she went to school for movies. And like, okay, no, no, no, you're you you okay, you got an education in movies. Anything I watch, I know is stupid.
SPEAKER_03So I was a s I well, I think I think also it was like I was a snob at first, but also a lot of your favorite movies were horror movies, and I was like, I'm scared. And so I think the focus for a while was like, well, yeah, horror movies, but this one's not that bad. And it's like, but I think you'd really enjoy this one, kind of easing into that. But I definitely understand the the the instinct of, oh, she'll think this is real stupid. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_02That's fair. Okay, okay, yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I I'm so glad that I've come around to not being that person anymore. Like, I feel like everyone who likes studies film in school goes through that sort of plateau of like, I'm inseparable. I only watch film. And now I'm like, this is film is an art. Exactly. And I'm like, this is a boring person to be. I don't want to be this guy. I would rather just enjoy things. Um, but yeah, and then I watched this and it's it's very stupid, it's very silly. Um, but I we watched it last week together because it was uh it's been a long time since I'd seen it. I know I'm sure it's probably been a little bit since you've seen it too, Mark. Um but I like there were points that made me laugh out loud. I was like, okay, this is funny. Like this is a this this isn't bad. This is this is ridiculous.
SPEAKER_02It's not bad, it's ridiculous.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's it's purely ridiculous. But yeah, so we are discussing 1992s in C No Man. I have so many fun facts, and I I I love them all. I'm obsessed.
SPEAKER_02Um, so I feel like most of this episode is gonna be fun facts.
SPEAKER_03So in Xeno Man, um stars Polly Shore, Sean Aston, and Brendan Fraser. So one thing I noticed is that depending on what summary you read and where you look for information, it is very unclear who the main character of this movie is. It a lot of them, the DVD cover that is how we watched it, because we liked the meeting of it, um, that was signed by Pauly Shore. Um, the goal is to get Sean Aston and Brenda Ranger someday to sign them as well. It would be real cool. But yeah, uh the DVD specifically says Polly Shore stars and da-da-da-da-da-da. No, I know, but watching it, it's like I don't I feel like Sean Aston is the main character. Like we stay at his house the most.
SPEAKER_02But then also on Prime said Sean Aston.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. Yeah, but then also Brendan Frazier is like this is a breakout role for him. This is like a big deal. Like he, you know, is the main character in a lot of ways. So it's that was something where, like, writing the order of their names, I was like, I don't a hundred percent know which one I want to do. So yeah, I thought that was super interesting. Um, it also stars Megan Ward, who plays Robin. She has been in a couple other movies, but she hasn't done too much that I was familiar with, um, mostly like acting in like the early 90s. The other two people that I did want to point out in the cast are um Robin Tunney, who plays um Robin's friend. Um, I believe. Yeah, Ella. Um, she was in The Craft in 1996, um, which is a breakout role for her. She was phenomenal. Um, I think her character is hilarious in this. I think she's ridiculous.
SPEAKER_01So good.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah. Um, and also the I can't remember his character's name. Um, but this also stars uh Matt Deloise, who is Dom Deloise's son.
SPEAKER_02Who who was he in the movie?
SPEAKER_03Oh, his oh my god, his character's name is Matt. Yeah, his character's name is Matt too. I was like, I thought I messed up my notes. I was like, that can't be right. Oh, no, it's Michael Deloise. I'm wrong. That's why. Um I think I wrote Matt because I was actually paying attention to the character's name. That was exciting. But yeah, um, Dom Deloise's son. And I was like, I have not thought about Dom Deloise in a very long time. Um, but that's kind of delightful. But yeah, uh, the movie was um directed by Les Mayfield. Um, this was his directorial debut. Um, he also directed the miracle on 34th Street in '94 with um Mara Wilson. Um and he also directed Flubber in 1997. Yes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Very silly movie. I know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I was like, this, this, this reads, like this, this uh is a this makes sense together. George Zaloom is the um co-wrote the screenplay, and he was the producer. Um, he is one of the heads, along with Les Mayfield, of um ZM Productions. Uh, they it's basically a production company. Uh, the two of them launched out of their college dorm room, um, but they specialize in nonfiction programming and family entertainment. Um, it is now a massive independent production company. Um, which I did not know about. Um, and then the story, the original story and the screenplay was also co-written by Sean Sheps, who is um, she has done some acting um in like mostly in the 90s, like she did some child acting. Um, she's done a little bit of writing. Uh, she wrote Son-in-Law, which also stars Polly Shore in uh 1993. Um, she wrote Inceno Woman, which came out in 1997, which was apparently a very, very bad movie that nobody cares for. It was a sequel, and uh I I did not dig too much into it. It was just like it just seems like it was not a good time that it did not need to get made. Um but she also same people? Yes, a lot of the same people. Well, not uh not the same actors, um, but same like writers. Oh, that's right, okay. But she also uh co-wrote the screenplay to Drumline in 2002, which I know I was I was like, what other what other credits pop out? And I was like, that one, that's wacky. Um, so this so this movie was produced by Hollywood Pictures Company. And I had never really paid attention to production companies um before this, but then as I started looking at some of the fun facts, it mentioned things about Disney, and I'm like, well, that doesn't make sense, it's not a Disney movie. But Hollywood Pictures is a subsidiary of Disney. Um it was created in 1989 and it lasted through 2007. It was started by Michael Eisner, who was the CEO of Disney at the time. And I know that name. I know, I'm Michael Eiser, head of the Walt Disney Company. Um, he's introduced it. I it's it's brand recognition. He did a good job. Um, and also by Jeffrey Katzenberg, who is the studio chief. And Jeffrey Katzenberg is where a lot of this information is from. It's fascinating. Um, so Hollywood Pictures was started in 1989 specifically to make movies that had an adult audience that had more mature themes, but and not just under the Disney label. Um, so Jeffrey Katzenberger, who was the studio chief at this time, um, was the chair of the entire Walt Disney Studios from 1984 to 1994. He was generally responsible, like credited a lot with reviving the studio and like bringing back box office sales. Um, he was in charge of the animation department during that like golden age in the late 80s of animation. So, like starting with the great Great Mouse Detective in 1986, and then through Pocahontas in 1996. So, like he was involved in so many of these things that basically made Disney profitable again because like their animated movies were weird and not getting a lot of money. And it was like the 80s, like Disney 80s stuff is like it's kind of known for being like a little experimental and maybe not not well reviewed. Um, but he also launched um Touchstone Pictures, which was around from 1984 to 2016. Did not realize that was a Disney subsidiary either.
SPEAKER_02Okay, now I'd have to look at what all that was because I remember that.
SPEAKER_03So Touchstone was like a lot of um like more mature movies, but also a lot of TV shows. Like a lot of like um like I remember seeing the logo after like a lot of um like more adult TV shows. Like it's just kind of spanning everything. Um, apparently, also during this time in 1993, um, Disney acquired Miramax, didn't know they did that. I need to go down. This is the rabbit hole that I fell down, where I was like, I this whole thing is crazy.
SPEAKER_02What else have they done? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. What else do you own? Um, but also Jeffrey Katzenberg was one of the people who helped broker the deal with Pixar, which led the way to, you know, CGI movies and Toy Story in 1994. Why? Um, but Jeffrey Katzenberg apparently was a nightmare human. Um, he apparently got very self-important. He credits basically himself for the studio's entire success. Um, he watching the uh the final cut of the Black Cauldron, which came out in 1985, um, he complained about one specific scene. And I don't know if I've ever seen the Black Cauldron, but apparently there is one scene that he was like, that's too scary, you have to cut it out. Um, and the studio did not do that. So he took the film himself and went to edit it, like um like right before it was supposed to go into production, like go, like go to like be released. Um apparently Michael Eisner talked him down and got him to stop it. And he's like, fine, but someone does need to professionally edit this, and it's gonna get released six months later because you need to make sure you do it right. So he was like a nightmare of a human. Um yeah, he apparently was like uh wanted to be president of the company, but at the time that meant skipping over someone, um, like a guy who had been sort of like lined up for that position. So Michael Eisner apparently was like, Well, yeah, you know, if anything ever like, you know, if this guy who's there decides to leave, you know, we'll talk about it. This guy, um, Frank Wells, he um died in a helicopter crash. And instead, but I know, but I I know, I I don't think it's actually that suspicious. It is suspicious timing. But also instead of giving that job to um to Katzenberg, uh, Michael Eisner just took those responsibilities himself and he just kind of absorbed that role. I know, but apparently that's because um specifically he said later that uh Roy Disney, Walt's nephew, I think, uh brother. Uh brother. I thought I thought it was nephew.
SPEAKER_02I can't he had a brother.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um one of the Disneys um didn't like Katzenberg and basically would have fought against him on the board if he was president. So it was literally just like I had to keep the peace and not give this guy the job that I didn't actually want to give him.
SPEAKER_02Um Yeah, that was uh that was uh Walt's brother was Roy Disney.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um someone, uh gosh, uh there was a Disney board member who said that he had been brought low by, quote, his ego and almost pathological need to be important. Um so after his contract down by Disney. I know. Well, here's the thing. So after he after his contract ended in 1994, Katzenberg left and opened DreamWorks Studios. What? Yeah, so he went straight from running- See you bitches later. Exactly. He went by, I'm gonna start my own production company with Steven Spielberg, and it's gone pretty well. Good job, DreamWorks. Um, he I know he uh he stepped down from uh DreamWorks in 2016. Um, he then founded Wonder Co, which is a venture venture capital firm for digital media projects. He also founded Quibi in 2020.
SPEAKER_02Oh no.
SPEAKER_03So that's his fault too. Yeah, he's just trying to keep with the times and making everyone maybe making it everyone else's problem. Um, so that is my that was my rabbit hole specifically about Jeffrey Katzenberg. And the reason that I looked so much into him is because a lot of the fun fact trivias that I found are about Jeffrey Katzenberg and his involvement and making this movie.
SPEAKER_02And this movie.
SPEAKER_03This movie specifically. So apparently this script was written and they were kind of iffy on it. Um Katzenberg showed it to the guy who was in charge of Hollywood Records at the time for like just sort of as like a hey, what do you think? And uh this guy was like, I think you should get Polly Shore to star in this specifically. And uh Katzenberg had never heard of Polly Shore, so he showed him his MTV sort of sketch show, which is called Totally Polly. I did not look into any more of that. I was like, I'm good, small doses are fine. Um, but Katzenberg was like, This rules, I gotta get this guy. Um Polly Shore apparently was originally offered the role of Link, but he turned it down because he wanted to be able to talk in his his comedic inflection that is like his his trademark, basically. So he's like, I don't know how cavemans talk. Um I I can't do my own thing. I don't want to do that. Exactly. Um so basically he said that he wanted to be one of the two high schoolers who finds the caveman. Jeffrey Katzenberg said, You're absolutely right. And then they had them rewrite the script so so then he could be one of those characters. Um he ended up improv he improvised most of his lines too. Yeah. I know. Okay. Yeah. So this was just this is also the first of a three-movie deal with Hollywood Studios and Holly Shore. The second movie was Son-in-law, and I think the third one might be Jury Duty. The other two that you mentioned, Mark.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um, so yeah, uh also um Brendan Fraser w was very reluctant about doing this movie. He turned down doing this movie eight times.
SPEAKER_02Oh my gosh. Because he had What had he done before this?
SPEAKER_03So he had just filmed a movie called School Ties that came out in the same year. It came out in 1992. And he this trivia specifically says that he envisioned himself as more of a thespian, worrying that this film was going to make him look too goofy. But the filmmakers really wanted him. So after conversations with them about the film's Theme he decided to come on. He took a lot of inspiration from Buster Keaton for his physical comedy performance, which absolutely tracks like the deadpan face with the physical comedy. He apparently wrestled a plant in his audition.
SPEAKER_02Adorable.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. But also I I think that this movie absolutely did like set him up. It set him up to be George of the Jungle a couple of years later.
SPEAKER_02I wanted to know where George of the Jungle was and all of that. Yes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. This is both movies came out in '92 in C No Man and School Ties. So I don't know which one was first, um, but I know that they came out in the same year. And then the next thing that he was in was George of the Jungle, where he was the same kind of guy. And it's like, oh no, Hollywood picked one, unfortunately. Um but he has range, he can do both. Um and then my my favorite bit about casting this is Sean Aston. Um, Sean Aston straight up did not want to be in this movie. He didn't want to make this movie. He fought this so much. Um, this I read this trivia and I was cracking up on the couch. I was yelling at Tamar in the other room. Um, so it says he sent this, he was sent the script, read it, and thought it was, quote, the biggest piece of shit he'd ever read in his life. Shortly after, Jeffrey Katzenberg personally called Sean, asking for his commitment to the film. He was offered $150,000 plus $400,000 on the back end. Sean tried to respectfully decline and even asked if they were willing to listen to his own ideas to make the film better. Katzenberg was only concerned with the money the film would make. After a while, they faxed him a revised script, which didn't actually change anything. Um, he was told Brendan Frazier, who would be in it, who Sean was eager to work with, and that Polly Schur would also be in it. Sean had never heard of Polly, and after watching tapes of his MTV footage that Disney had sent him, Sean got even more reluctant. No! The thing that hooked uh Katzenberg is the thing that got Sean Aston to be like, actually, I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Um only Brendan Fraser was selling the crazy. Exactly.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's like, well, I like this guy. Um, but it says Disney was Disney was relentless in getting Sean to do this film. So they upped his pay to $250,000, gave him complete control creative control of his character, which he didn't actually use, and then promised him a short film to direct with the option to direct two more movies. He was still on the fence, but eventually took the film. Reading over this, the fact that Why did they want him so bad? I don't know. The fact that the two of them did not want, like him and Brendan Fraser were like, I don't know about this movie, and Polly Shore is like, This is for me. It it does inform a lot about the movie, I think. And I think it also it kind of informs how how Smokey really is kind of the main character at the end of the day. Um, because I feel like this was written and tailored for him specifically.
SPEAKER_02For him, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Stony?
SPEAKER_03Stony, yeah. I said that.
SPEAKER_01I said I thought you said Smokey and Smoky.
SPEAKER_03Did I say Smokey? Oh no, I'm still sucking Big Lebowski. I'm so sorry. I know. I just yeah. I never left. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's wild.
SPEAKER_03I know. It the the journey of trying to get this movie made is so funny. Um, I have a couple other small things. So this movie is known as California Man. And it is uh when it's directed or when it was released internationally. Um Sino is not a city that anyone knows outside of the US. And sometimes it is.
SPEAKER_02Um Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Uh and then the last little bit is that the clip from The Terminator almost didn't make it into the movie. Um, Disney told the writer to take it out of the script five times, and he kept turning in new pages that had it in there. Uh, Jeffrey Katzenberg was on the writer's side, even telling Arnold Schwarzenegger's agent that if Arnold lets him use the clip, he'll personally come and mow his lawn. Jeffrey then called Arnold, and within 30 seconds, they were given the rights to the movie. What is happening? Jeffrey Katzenberg is a nightmare, and I am fascinated by this man. Gets shit done. He gets shit done, but he steps on everyone's toes to get it done.
SPEAKER_02I'm like, what else were you behind? I know you made happen. Yeah, he besides DreamWorks, obviously.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it yeah, it just it's it's wild. Like this guy, I was like, why does this guy's name keep popping up? You're not the writer. I thought he was the director at first, and I'm like, no, you're just an executive with a lot of a lot of opinions. Yeah. Yes. Um, but yeah, and then I the last I think the last thing was that like the I know one of the things that Mark had pointed out about it was that the soundtrack is is consistently really good for this movie. So the soundtrack is amazing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I I I know somewhere in my notes I made a note to myself, like, I should look at this soundtrack later because like all these songs are I I enjoy all these songs. Like that's you know, so yes. Yeah, it's a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_01Just looking at the lineup of the tracks in the movie is like if you were to try to put all these tracks in a movie today, it would be s would cost so much.
SPEAKER_08It would cost so much.
SPEAKER_01Like the rights to so many of these things, including the theme for Terminator.
SPEAKER_02Like that was insane how much it would cost today.
SPEAKER_01And then I guess it was this was all before anybody cared about censoring and like changing l logos of Coca-Cola cans or little Caesars. So I think it was more open use on on uh you just call and say, Hey, can I use this in a movie? And that was about it.

SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. I think this is like it's it's wild because like in the grand scheme of things, it's like, yeah, you know, all of these wacky things happened, but the movie still got made and it was totally fine. And it's yeah, exactly right.

SPEAKER_02Okay. Um then I guess we'll hop in. So the movie starts. It's uh got some really interesting music. I don't I I don't know how to categorize it.
SPEAKER_03Um kind of generically tribal.
SPEAKER_02Thank you. I wanted to say tribal, but it felt bad saying it. Um, so yes, generic tribal music. We've got literally just like black and white beginning credits with names, so ominous and weird. Yeah. I was like, what is happening? Very serious right off the battery. Yeah, no. No, not at all. It's like, what are we getting into here? We're in the 90s colors. Um so well, hold on. So because we're in a forest or like snowy, foggy mountains. It looks really cold. And then we see someone in like this really big coat with a stake, like climbing into a cave, like a cave, I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, climbing into a cave. And my next question is, are we to assume caveman times? Um because I think something I had, you know, some the description, whatever, pops up, like caveman. I'm like, oh, okay, okay. I'm I'm getting a little bit of this comedy. So yes, there's a man and a woman huddled together. The man is trying to make fire and then does, but then earthquake question mark.
SPEAKER_03Um, I'm assuming like earthquake avalanche, something's going on in the world.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. If it is the ice age, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yes. The guy yells, they like reach for each other, but for some reason they can't grab each other. The action on this was not very clear.

SPEAKER_02I was like, what's happening? We're just screaming, and then the cave collapses.
SPEAKER_08I was like, okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So we get that. And then we cut screen to Sean Aston waking up in his bed screaming, and the house is shaking. So it's an earthquake, because we're in California. Um, and I was like, this is vaguely familiar because I lived in Japan for a while. And I was like, this was a thing, and it was not fun.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_02Um, so I totally get that. Yeah. So he's doesn't look it, but a teenager, because you can tell by his room.
SPEAKER_03Another fun fact, he got married this year in 1992. This this movie, when he was playing a high schooler, came out the same year that Sean Aston got married in real life.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god. I mean, it's it's very grease of like, yeah, we're definitely teenagers. It's fine.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Eventually we get teenagers to play teenagers, sort of.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So he like wants to go back to sleep, he covers his head, like, ugh, earthquake. And then an icy falls on him and he drinks it, which gross.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I'm like, oh, a gross high schooler. Amazing. Yeah. Where did it fall from? Where was it?
SPEAKER_01Probably like the headboard or like a shelf above the bed. All right.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Yeah, disgusting. It was probably one lights. It was fine. We don't know. So uh we're looking outside at all the different homes. It's kind of suburban, but like every home seems to have a pool. Um, except for the one where I'm saying Sean because I don't remember his name until Dave. Dave in a pool in his backyard, and their dog, Boris the dog, yeah, is barking. I don't we'll get to Boris. Um we won't. It's just a stupid name.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah, it's kind of a swing. It's a yeah, yeah, it's a weird choice.
SPEAKER_02It's a weird choice of a name. The first time you hear it is when the dad says it too, I think, and he's like, Boris.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you're like, who the fuck is Boris?
SPEAKER_02Honestly, yes. Yeah. And I'm like, oh, it's the dog? Okay. So Stoney comes running out of the house. We're at Dave's home. Uh, apparently, Stoney has stolen the last bagel, but doesn't want to do, like, doesn't want to help with the pool. So he's just there for vibes. We get exposition from the younger sister saying, your scheme won't work, you're not gonna go to prom and no one will swim in this pool. And I was like, all right, that's all we need to know here.
SPEAKER_03Thank you, exposition child.
SPEAKER_02Yes, which I don't I don't know if I ever heard her name. And then Sony's like, oh, it doesn't matter, we're losers. Like, that's okay, like whatever. And Dave, the the juxtaposition between these two is immediately set of no, he wants more for himself. He doesn't want to be a loser. And Sony's like, it's okay. So he uh he wants to go to prom and have a prom after party and be prom king. And I'm like, okay. And then we hear about Robin Sweeney, Robin with a Y, Robin Sweeney, who uh Dave is crushing on. And I can't remember if is it then that we we hear like uh that he he had his chance or was that later? I wasn't sure because because eventually we get the backstory of like Dave was like, well, Robin wasn't a hottie, then now she is. And so I couldn't, I didn't write it here, so I wasn't sure if that was when they got to school that they talk about that. Because at this point it's like Dave is really like just determined to not be a loser.
SPEAKER_01Right, and I think it was because uh so I think that was the point where uh Stoney was talking to him, like, you know, you had your chance, you're you're not kids anymore, because they were kids, they like grew up together, and I think they were like boyfriend, girlfriend, young, you know, like the play playstyle or whatever. Um so I think that's what he was referring to as like missed your chance.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yeah. It's like you were friends. It it felt like like you were you were friend friends in like middle school and you you could have been with her or whatever, and it's like, yeah, but she wasn't hot then. And I'm like, what I is happening.
SPEAKER_01So 90s objectification.
SPEAKER_03Dave Dave sucks.
SPEAKER_02I was watching this being like, this is a product of the times. So I was trying to take a step back, but I'm like, Dave is the villain. Yeah, Dave is the villain in this movie. You really are really but I was worried that I was like, am I doing because I am because well, because I'm 37 and a woman and a mom and like all these other things besides that. It's like if I watched this as a teenager, would I like Dave?
SPEAKER_03I don't know. And and I think in that era, I think we were supposed to. I think it was supposed to be a good one. Right, we were supposed to root for Dave. He's the underdog, and now I'm just like, okay, there no, I don't like this.
SPEAKER_02Dave, what are we doing here? Yeah, um, okay, so then yes, we we get to school. Stony drives Dave on their scooter, and we we see Robin, she's a super hot blonde. And then, oh, and this is yeah, well, okay, my note says, Yeah, they had history, she wasn't a babe yet. Um, and now Robin is dating Matt Wilson. He's cool, I guess. Oh, and then it um at one point Sterney was like fully like breaking down every part that made Matt awesome in the school. Just I can't remember what he was saying, but it was like, oh, he's got the this and the this, and like, yeah, pretty much he's he's he's the top of the top.
SPEAKER_03I do love that moment in a movie. It's like, what does he have that I have I don't have? And then the person lists everything and it's like, okay, I get it. Stop.
SPEAKER_02That no, that's bad. I feel like already at this point, though, I was like, they are speaking another language and I don't understand it. There were so many things that I was like, I need a full translation for this sentence, and I never got it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I was like, I don't know what we're talking about a lot of time here. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02I I guess if that's what it was, um, because I've never been to California. Yeah. So that that was that was a little rough. But I was like, I think some context I could get, but sometimes I was like, I don't know if the sentence is positive or negative. Like, what are we saying about it?

SPEAKER_03This is okay, this remains like the funniest part of the movie where he slides in from off camera and just shakes his head. No. It's so that got me, that made me laugh watching a video.
SPEAKER_02Despite him being a bully, he was kind of funny sometimes.
SPEAKER_03He's hilarious. I was like, he's pretty silly. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So the teacher shows a picture of Crow Magnum Magnan or Magnum Magnum.

Foreshadowing. So we're fully done with school. We're back at Dave's house. Dave's continuing to dig. He hits something. Stoney's just there dancing to a cassette, just in his own fucking world. Dave's like, oh my God, I found something. It's cold. Like it's a rock and it's like cold. Um, so they they pull something out. Stoney's like, oh yeah, it's a Mysterian bull from the prehistoric era. Don't you ever watch Jeopardy? That's pretty good.
SPEAKER_03So, real quick, the Mysterian era is an actual archaeological era.
SPEAKER_02I believe that, yeah.
SPEAKER_03But uh apparently the reason that there are so many Jeopardy references is because Polycore likes Jeopardy in real life.
SPEAKER_02God damn it.

SPEAKER_02Okay. Acting! How I want to hear like Sean Aston's point of view for this because it's like, how do you say your correct lines if he's just riffing the entire tool?

SPEAKER_02Stony trips, throws the bowl, the crack gets big, ice comes out. Dave falls like past the wheelbarrow, somehow catches the bowl on top of the ice. And then so he he looks at the ice, knocks on it for some reason, and is like, there's a guy buried in my pool. Which can you see that? You're just supposed to take their word for it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I think at that point, like it's it's not, it is very unclear.
SPEAKER_02Okay, cool. Yeah so they both scream because they're like, Oh my god, it's a dead body.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So they go yell at this moment. It is, it absolutely is. Yeah, there's a guy in the pool, and the mom's just like, I'm working, and like closes the blinds on them because they're like, call 911. But nobody has cell phones. She's on the phone, we can't call 911.
SPEAKER_03That's it. Guess we wait.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, I guess we we go back to it and we find out what's going on because their dog is literally digging it up. Yeah. Boris. Oh, yes, Boris. And then they're like guessing who it could be because they're like, Oh, yeah, they never found however many people they listed of like like famous people, and then of course, so you know, one kid from like first grade or something that he's like, Yeah, they never found and he's like, Who is that? Um so they think it could be like some some dead body of a famous person. And then I guess they come upon the realization that it's a caveman, and then they fully believe it. And now Dave's like, Oh, fame, fortune, money, popular, like, I want this is my ticket.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And Sony's like, nope, I I don't want to be a part of this. And Dave's like, no, I need your help. You have you have you're a part of this already.
SPEAKER_03You're bought in. You're you're part of it. You've seen it, you've seen too much. Yes, you you've you're you know too much, but also like you were here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. But then Dave somehow entices Sony. I can't remember what exactly he was saying, but like this isn't at the point where I was like, Kiss, like, what is happening here? Okay, because they Sean asked him with the icon number.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, yeah, they're they're real parts. Yeah, no, his like leaning into him, and I'm like, okay, you were looking at it. And like whispering things. Yeah. I'm like, okay.
SPEAKER_05I was like, are they gay? Like, what is this movie about? What's happening?
SPEAKER_01Their their chemistry just in the in these specific scenes is like we've gotta, we gotta be close. Like we we've gotta just, hey man, like we're family. Like, I gotta I gotta get you to understand. Yeah. And just the way that he leaned into, man, just think about it. Money, money can buy you grindage. Money can you you can just chill out all the time with your grindage and watch all the Jeopardy you want. And he was like, Oh man, Jeopardy.
SPEAKER_02Yes, you got me in Jeopardy. What? Um yeah, so so that Stoney's on board. Um but then suddenly it's night and they're like, we got the body out, we did it. So Dave, taking Polaroids, which I don't know if I would have thought to document or that they were going to obviously bites him in the ass, but I'm like, not something you should probably be doing. Just like, just do it. Yeah. And not just because it doesn't end well, just because, like, don't do that. I don't know. It just felt weird at the time.
SPEAKER_03It feels like photographing a crime scene that you're creating. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know? And then you find out later that he labels all of them. I'm like, you're stupid.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. Yeah. We have notes about Dave.

SPEAKER_02There's a problem about Dave. God. So they bring the icicle into their like shed. They're like pointing out the different body parts that we can't see in the ice. We're just making all of this up at a time at the time. And then we cut to them asleep outside, which why weren't they inside the shed? Like I don't know what transpired. Um, but then Dave's like, we got a thaw. And so Stony just tries to breathe on it. And I was like, that, okay, that kind of got me. That was pretty funny. Um and then it's just it's like it's like something your kid wouldn't do. Literally, what my child does every time she wants something to cool down. She breathes on it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, straight up. Yeah, just like immediately.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, absolutely. So so Dave was like, hey, like you really can't tell anyone about this. Like, this is serious business. And I feel like Sony, he's like, Well, not even, I can't remember who he names, but he's like, not even.
SPEAKER_03It's like, no, someone's someone random. It's like, no.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. It's like this is this is a caveman. We can't, none, none of this can be happening.

SPEAKER_02So lot a lot of quick cuts. I like that nothing's long and drawn out, and a lot of the times you can just you don't need the in-between. It's pretty efficient. I feel like that doesn't happen with a lot of movies anymore. No, not really. Um, so this was nice. So we're back at school. Dave, Dave's gonna talk to Robin. Oh, but then, but then he immediately tells her, Yes, what's going on? Yeah. He's literally just like like laying into stony about like you can't tell anyone. And he's like, guess what? You should you should come over to my house. I have a caveman. And like, of course, I feel like she's like, that's some sort of weird innuendo. She's like, I'm not ready for a caveman. Yeah. And at this point, I'm like, yeah, she is not into him at all.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely not. Yeah. I think I wrote this as the start of Dave just straight up being the villain. Like after saying, you can't tell anyone, hey Robin, I'm like, you suck, man.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Come on. Yeah. I mean, he, yeah, I feel like he definitely gets worse, but yes, that's fair that this is probably the uh well, but then you get your your supposed villain where Matt approaches Dave and like makes fun of it. Like, oh no, it's the high school boyfriend bully guy that we see all the time.
SPEAKER_03You're not good enough for her. It's like she he's right.

SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, of course. We have to thaw an iceman. So then we cut to Matt and his like two cronies that we don't know, have stapled Dave to a wall for prom king, and uh they write on his forehead and then pull the fire alarm. And I'm like, this is just this is a lot. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I need to I need to interject. This is this is your introduction of shush.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01This was the first shush of the movie. Uh Matt's over-exaggerated shush. It's oh. So yeah, when he was getting ready to talk back to him, he was like, Oh, Matt, you know, shush. And then he just continues on. Oh my god. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay. I think that that inflection of saying shush is I think the first thing I knew about this movie because I was like, what is happening? And Mark was like, It's from this. I'm like, what? And then we watched it. Um yeah, but it's it's it it gets quoted a lot, and it is it is pretty funny. Um apparently there's a pro wrestler who picked that up as his like catchphrase.
SPEAKER_02Okay, that's funny. I did that. Yeah. I don't know why that is not something I picked up on as far as like repeated lines stuff. I apologize.

SPEAKER_02And the man is out. He's screaming because he remembers almost dying. Um, let's see. He's really dirty and confused. At this point, I'm like, oh my god, is he naked? He's not. He gets out of the shed, steps on a rake, and falls over. Boris is nice to him, and he he does not like Boris very much. Um like the dog Boris. Um I hate this. Uh you can just say the dog if we if we don't have the game. I say the dog because we don't know the dog's name yet.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. This one doesn't need a first name. He doesn't know. It's fine.
SPEAKER_02No. So yeah, he like kind of plays with the dog, but then pushes him away. I said, thank goodness he's wearing a loincloth, but it leaves little to the imagination. And then I'm like, oh, this is a very young Brendan Fraser. It's like, oh my. Yeah. See, there's a helicopter that he yells at, and then he he gets a shovel and he is off to figure out what the hell is going on. He tries to attack a garbage truck, and then he he gets back into the house, the same house, right?

SPEAKER_02Um, and then accidentally turns on the TV.
SPEAKER_08Mm-hmm. Yep, steps on the remote.
SPEAKER_02Yes, not totally freaked out by it, but then like here's somehow it's like MTV or something, then he starts dancing. And I was like, this is not what I expected for a caveman. It's like a a TV, I feel like, should like have you attacking the TV, not dancing to the music. But that's he's his own kind of caveman. Yeah. It's vibe.
SPEAKER_01I think it's because it flipped to one of the channels, and it was like a National Geographic channel as well.
SPEAKER_02That's right. It was a good thing.
SPEAKER_01It was a bunch of tribal dancing on the screen, and he was like, oh, that's familiar.
SPEAKER_02I know this. Yeah. Okay, no, you're right. You're right.
SPEAKER_03Okay, and then it clicks over to MTV. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I think, okay, my bad. Let's see. School's over. Dave has returned. Dave, I think Ann Stoney have returned. And then they see that, oh my god, he's he's melted. And I'm like, did they believe that the man had melted? Yeah. Oh my god, they're so stupid.
SPEAKER_03I was like, how is Dave this dumb?
SPEAKER_02Okay. I thought when they said melted, it was like just the ice, not.
SPEAKER_03Like it melted and he's free or something. It's like he ran away. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But then, yeah, the way he was acting, it was a team. I'm like, oh no, did they think he just he fully human melted? Okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't think they were extended expecting it to be alive. So they were expecting to come home and find a body, but there was no.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he wasn't gonna go anywhere, ideally.
SPEAKER_02No, okay, okay. That's fair. That's fair. I'm not giving them enough credit. Exactly. That they thought they had a dead body and not a meanwhile, we're like, yeah, of course it would be alive. This is a movie. What do you mean? No, they think they melted bones and meat and everything. Right, that's cool. Cool. So they find out that's not true because they see a face print on the window, like full face print. Um, go inside. Uh, let's see, the TV's broken with multiple cave drawings that look like they're done in peanut butter.

SPEAKER_02Um, the smoke alarm goes off upstairs, and then they do this the ultimate 90s like kid yell. It's just which I mean was pretty funny. Yeah. So the caveman's upstairs. Somehow in he picks Dave's room, which I'm like, that's I guess convenient. There's the word, convenient. Um, trying to make a fire out of a chair or a table.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, and Stoney's like, let's just go. Like, he's like, let's let's leave. This is none of our business. But then Dave is like, no, the the caveman, he's ours. And I'm like, oh, people is property. That's where we're going, Dave. Yeah. Fun. And he continues that as well. I'm like, oh no, David. David, David. David. Yeah, David.
SPEAKER_06Ew, David.
SPEAKER_02So they come in there, like, try to stay calm. Brennan kind of freaks out a little bit, like, just like hesitant of them.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But then the fucking phone rings and he freaks out. Um, jumps on the bed and then was like, wait, this is fun. So it's just like, just so silly. Yeah. Um, it's just like, oh, I'm I'm having fun now. Like the phone's done ringing or something. And because I think they hit the phone off the the hook, and it's just like, oh, he's having fun, he's jumping out of bed, whatever. And then the dial tone happens and he flips out again. Like, oh my god, this is insane.
SPEAKER_01The scene is just it's very good. It's ADHD slapstick gold.
SPEAKER_02It really, yes, that's what it is. Um, because then for whatever reason, Stony produces a lighter, and it's like, oh, a flame.

And then uh the caveman's just like, cool, I have fire now. I'm gonna light some shit that I was trying to do. And Dave's like, no. Um, so then this is the first word that he starts to repeat is no, having just learned it, and then jumps up on the bed and says, No, no, no. I'm like, oh, that's something a two-year-old does. Um, this is very familiar. This is the first word you learn, and you're just gonna say it all the time.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So as they're watching him jump on the bed, I love like the conversation here. I think this is like the one thing that I like wrote down. It was like, we have we gotta teach him stuff. We gotta teach him how to be yes. Oh, yeah, we gotta teach him how to be normal. Normal. And then Sony goes, no, no, we're going psycho with him. That's boring. Right.

SPEAKER_02Yes, but then I'm like his hair looked normal when they were cleaning it, and then somehow it looked like it almost turned into some sort of dread.

SPEAKER_02Wow. Well, that I wonder if he took that wardrobe with him. That would have been pretty funny. That would be some of his clothes were pretty cool.

SPEAKER_03Yeah. The one other um note from the uh from like the the cleaning him up thing, um, I found that uh Brendan Fraser was actually putting real bath beads in his mouth in that scene. Um, and he just had to spit them out between takes. Oh my god. But yeah, also, hey, remember bath beads? Vaguely? What we never do. Basically, they were just like like jelly beads that had like oils in them. I think it was like we were just young enough that we did not like experience those, but I like kind of knew what they were. But yeah, they're just it it's basically like not quite tide pod kind of situation, but sort of like that.

SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's kind of like it made me think of um all of those like seashell looking soaps that used to be in like all like you know, you when you rented a beach house and that was all or like a fancy restaurant or something. That's what it made me think of. I was like, oh, it just look or like you know, how potpourri to some when you're a kid looks like food sometimes or something like that. Like just one of those things of like you're not supposed to eat it, but it looks like you can eat it, kind of thing.

SPEAKER_02Um but for a second, Stony wants to try and name him what, Stony 2, wasn't it? And it's like that would just get confusing. But he was really he was really gunning for it.

SPEAKER_01I wanted to add, I'm shocked. Watching the bath scene and all of the cleanup and everything, everything they mixed into the bath should have caused at least a rash, if not mass nausea.

So they test him, and then he gets both of theirs and then forgets his own, and he looks so sad. And I'm like, oh my god.

SPEAKER_02I think so. I should have just, or like your parents are home, or something. And it's just that like typical like 90s. Oh yeah, like the sitcom like scream. Sitcom. Yeah. It was very silly and and it it didn't really feel like it went with the movie, but it was funny.

SPEAKER_02Um, so the house is trashed. Uh Dave Parents and his sister come home. Dave tells Stoney to take Link outside and then ring the doorbell. And Dave's like, I was cooking. You're welcome. I couldn't find the flower. And it's like, what? Nobody's gonna believe this.

SPEAKER_02Um but then Stone and Link ring the doorbell multiple times and then come in. And Dave's like, oh, Link, this is your new family. Um, and poor dog Boris the dog, which is just when we find out his name, I said the dog's name is Boris with five question marks.

SPEAKER_02So the dog freaks out, and then I think Dave lets Boris outside, and then Link goes with him.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he just like opens the door, and they just like both run outside.
SPEAKER_02Just like go. Yeah. So then Dave comes up with the story that Link is an exchange student from Estonia, and I'm getting extra credit for having him stay here and dig the pool out. And don't you remember you agreed to this, mom and dad? And then the mom is like almost immediately buying it. Yeah. And then the dad's like coming along as well. But then the sister's like, this is bullshit. Yeah. But nobody listens to her. And they're like, I can't believe I forgot. And then Dave has to like gaslight his mom with, remember, you forgot me at school that one time. And then you forgot about this. And she's like, I'm- Dave is the villain!

SPEAKER_02Dave is the villain. Absolutely. Um Dave's a pro. But like apparently it's all fine. Because they're like, oh yeah, Link will just Link will stay in my room. It's fine. Yeah. And and and he does. Because then we cut to him in like cow pajamas in Dave's room.

SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah. The dog. He's just playing with him.

SPEAKER_01They're bonding. And then there's, oh man, um, that doorbell scene too funny. Oh, just hitting the doorbell right now. Stop ringing the doorbell. Stop ringing the door. And they finally come in and he just reaches his hand back out and he rings it again. And it's like, oh my God. If if anybody other than Brendan Fraser tried that, I don't think it would be as funny.
SPEAKER_02No, it's the physical comedy and the lack of impulse control is just so funny, but also like relatable on multiple levels of like it's what you want to do, but it's also what kids do, and it's really silly.
SPEAKER_03And it and it is, you can tell like the Buster Keaton, like the very like sort of like neutral face while doing all this silly stuff. Yeah, I'm just like, this would not be as funny if you were like, uh, like leaning into it. I'm like, no, you are playing this perfectly. Like you have great comedic timing and delivery. It's so good.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god. Yeah, without saying so much, which is crazy because I was like, is he ever gonna speak barely?
SPEAKER_03I know. This this movie, it's crazy. This movie makes me want to watch more Brendan Fraser movies, like especially early ones that I don't remember as much of.

SPEAKER_03I I love the shot when they are walking up to the doors of the school. The shot through the glass door where Link just runs straight into it. That's a really good shot. It's really well done.

SPEAKER_01Make up your mind. He put it in work for one minute. It's like, of course, hot on the outside, cold in the middle. And it's like, uh you hear the background, and he's like, I told you two minutes.

You have to stop. And then Link does the Yeah. And then, oh, what is it? Oh, the c and then they were like repeating his slang to him.

SPEAKER_02Oh my god, that's funny. And then and then poor Link gets a brain freeze. Yeah. The icy. Yes. And they leave. And then this probably got me the most. Where Link comes back in the sunglasses and said, I'll be back and leaves. And I was, I think I laughed out loud, and I was like, that was so unexpected. I felt like a true threat to these four men.
SPEAKER_01Or coming back for the icy machine. We will, we've just.
SPEAKER_02But with the deadpan, the sunglasses and the deadpan, and he's so big and tall. I'm like, oh my God. I know. He's coming back for the day.
SPEAKER_05It's just like we gotta lock the doors, man. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I don't want him coming back. We should close for the day. Yeah, we're closed. Oh my god. So then we're suddenly on a roller coaster. And I'm like, fair montage. It's not a fair. I can't remember what it was.

SPEAKER_02Amusement. Yes, yes. And and I felt like poor Link at some point probably thought he was gonna die because he was on a roller coaster. Yeah. But then they they go they meet these, or they keep seeing or meet these women that are there, and then they go on the river rapids with women, and then they're mean to a mascot for some reason. Yeah, just like bullying this mascot. Who's just trying to work?
SPEAKER_01The mascot threw the first bunch.

SPEAKER_02And then has to catch it and then eat it. And then goes to eat Boris's food too.
SPEAKER_01Meanwhile, the the burrito from the gas station line pops back up because he catches the fly and he does the whole like into his mouth. And immediately Stony's just, meat group.
SPEAKER_03Oh god. I know. So also the uh the food in the dog bowl is cookie crisp.
SPEAKER_02I love that.
SPEAKER_03I know. Like I read that trivia and then looking at it again, I was like, Yep, straight up. Like that's it.
SPEAKER_02That's great though. Like I I I like that it wasn't like something like just like gross that looked like dog food. It's like that's fully just like cereal that you can eat. Like that's that's nice. That's when people were nice to actors. Exactly. Yeah, sometimes.
SPEAKER_03Compared to the bath beads that he was popping in his mouth earlier, he I feel like he did that himself. I'm sure he did. He deserved the cookie crisp. This was fine.

SPEAKER_03I will say, so this this is the scene where I was like, what the fuck is happening in Stoney's life? I think there's like like maybe something tragic that we will never get into. Because the dad says, Hey, how's your mother? And he goes, She's really bummed, and then does not elaborate at all. That's right. And I'm like, what is happening with his mother? I don't know. And then I and this is one of the ones where I wrote the entire, the entire sentence down. And I don't Oh, okay. And I would I would love to just uh to decipher this. So it says, if you're edged about it, if you're edged because I'm wheezing on your grinded, just chill. If I had the whole Brady Bunch thing happening at my pad, I'd go grind over there. So don't tax my gig so hardcore, cruster. I think basically it's like, please don't be annoyed that I am eating food over here. I don't know if it's like my family dynamic is different. Like, I don't know if it's like, hey, like I don't like it's not like not having like a family meal and sitting down at the table. It's like I like this vibe better. That's why I'm over here. But I don't know if it's like, I don't immediately I'm just like, is there something darker going on? Are you okay? Is this a cry for help? What's happening with you? And we'll never find out. We have no idea. But it just like his dad just kind of looking at him going, okay, yeah, like this is a lot of what and like typing out the entire the entire quote. I'm just like, I these are words. SPEAKER_02It felt strangely hostile though, because I didn't feel like the dad was really like digging in on him about anything.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it seemed like a like not like defensive.

SPEAKER_03It it seemed like like almost preemptively defensive, like not offensive, but like hey, you know, it's like if you're annoyed about this, maybe, you know, maybe back off. And I'm like, I don't know if he needed to back off. They are they have clearly just been feeding you, like yeah.

And just even using the whole Brady Bunch thing happening over at my pad, like something's wrong. So he just avoids home as much as possible. And he feels like everything Dave has is like movie screen or TV screen. Like, this is so much better than I've got. And I know I'm eating all your food, but like yeah, I don't want to be there. So that's sort of what I got from it, even like back when I originally watched it. And the first time hearing it was just those were so many funny words, and I have no idea what he just said. But like the second or third time it like made sense, and like, oh, oh, his life is fucked up to just be like over this dude's house all the time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And then also you could even read into like the fact that he watches Jeopardy so much. It's like, okay, what are you? Either you're not you're home by yourself or you're avoiding things by just being in your room watching TV or like something, something.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. It's it's it's very, it's very like latchkey kid vibes where it's just like, yeah, I like you know, problem home. Yeah, it's like I reheat my own food when I get home from school by myself and watch TV. And yeah, yeah, like that kind of vibe. I don't know, but yeah, but like this scene, I'm just like, there's some, there's another storyline here. I don't know what it is.

SPEAKER_02Anyways, let's go to the to the ice rink. Let's go to Blades, which I did not assume ice rink. I don't know what I thought it was gonna be like a club. So they get there. Link immediately like runs out of the car, like, my date, I'm gonna go do the thing that I was invited to do. Yeah, and then Stody and Dave are like, We made it, and then they walk in, and yeah, it's an ice hockey rink. And I'm like, and almost nobody is playing. Like, this seems like the lamest hangout ever to me.
SPEAKER_03It was the 90s. Um, we didn't have anything to do.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. So don't worry, Link finds Ella pretty quickly and they hang out. Yep. And then Stoney and Dave come in later and are immediately bullied by two randos because they like push a skateboard at Dave and he somehow flies into Rob. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah. Like Peak, like, whoa, falls down fully down.
SPEAKER_02But like, of course, of course, to Robin, the girl that he likes.

She's like, I know, I know.

And then Link becomes distracted by Radmobile racing game. Yeah. Um, so that looks exciting. So he's off to go do that. Dave is literally trying to convince Robin to go out with him.

SPEAKER_02Bad movie. Like just creep behavior. Yeah. This is not the time. With someone else. Yeah. None of this is right. And she she sees through him. Um, like she's not going along with it. Um, and then Matt grabs Dave and pulls him onto the ice. He doesn't have skates, he's just there.

SPEAKER_02Um, let's see. Link hears that goes over to help Dave, takes a punch from Matt, and like doesn't fall, and that's really impressive to everyone.
SPEAKER_04It's like he's super.
SPEAKER_02But he also doesn't continue the fight.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So it's this like weird, you know, and because, you know, classic would be like, oh yeah, you know, he he keeps fighting back, but it's just like that hurt. I'm gonna leave now.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's like, well, I it yeah, it's like I didn't enjoy that. No.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that was not fun for me.

SPEAKER_01And then also, uh I think Stoney even explained it. He was like, Link like cavemen didn't fight. They they like they hunted or they protected their like they didn't just they didn't know fighting for fighting. Yeah. So that's why he was just like, oh, ow, okay. I'm yeah, I'm gonna walk away.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like you're you're not a resource, you're and nothing nothing is nothing will come from it, so what's the point? Yeah. Yes. Yeah, that that makes sense. Yeah, because they're talking about that, and then I say they, I believe it's Dave decides that Link needs to learn how to fight.

So it seems like all in an afternoon or evening, they watch wrestling, they watch like kung fu, they want him to eat raw eggs, and he eats the eggshells instead. SPEAKER_02So then back at school, it's like almost kind of another montage. Um because Link is super cool for taking the punch. He's eating a frog from biology for some reason. Well, he cooked it. He did cook it. Okay, yeah. Bunsen burger cooking. That's we gotta give him some credit there. He loves a fire. So and it was already pickled for him. Yeah. So then, like, you just see like how popular Link is getting at school because he's in pottery, he's in the computer club, he's with the I don't know if it's a club, but he's into hip hop.
SPEAKER_03And so like all yeah, like those two, those two, like like the two-person dance group, basically.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, those two guys that he yeah, he really likes. Um, but like none of the other groups are jiving with each other, so it's just like he he's in every man's man.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. Um, also the uh the kid who is in charge of the computer cub is Kiwei Kwan, um, who was in the Goonies and now is has been in um newer stuff. His culture, his career, yeah, his career resurged in the last however many years. Um, but yeah, I he and Brendan Frazier like presented an award or something together, and it was like kind of it was like, oh, it's an Encino Man reunion. Look at that. That was like that's an insane thing to reference.
SPEAKER_02So then we're on a field trip at a museum looking at an example of the Crow Magnum man. Crow magnon man, yeah. I can say words.
SPEAKER_06It's okay.
SPEAKER_02Okay, the Crow Magnon man, and then Link is like stunned because I think he just he's he's putting it together. Yeah. And then he like walks around and is looking at like actual scientists putting together fossils because but like I'm sorry, no museum does this.
SPEAKER_03No. Um I think this is like the museum at the Labra Tarpits, if I'm not mistaken. I think I had looked that up and that's like where that is, but like it California, so like it is like local to like where this would be.
SPEAKER_02Sure. For me, it was more just like the the fact that people are actually doing stuff.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, just straight up doing science.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that you can watch doing the science. Yes. Um, so he's getting like more and more freaked out and like seeing, you know, parts that could be his parts, and then the larger and larger animals. And um then he's just like somewhere screaming, and then we see Stony and Dave like hear him, and they're like, Oh, well, we should, we should go, go, go after that.
SPEAKER_00Um that sounds like a Matt Yep.
SPEAKER_02And then Matt follows behind. So uh Link is in the display trying to make a fire and crying, and I'm like, oh no. And then Stone's like, I think he realized what happened. So they're actually nice. They try to connect with him and be his family, and Link starts to feel a little bit better. I'm like, okay, you guys, you actually did a good thing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, there is so much like understated poignance in Brendan Frazier's performance, like especially in like these kinds of scenes. Like, it's like it, it's like over the top and dramatic, and like he makes these like j like really exaggerated faces, but then it's just like this, and I'm like, oh, this is like really kind of heartfelt. Like, I didn't expect this.
SPEAKER_02Yes, like the the the micro like emotion, like just like the way his physicality is so good when this acting is.
SPEAKER_03It's so good, yeah.
SPEAKER_02He brings like so much like like serious acting to this movie that it did not, I don't think it deserved necessarily, but it's but it makes it better than one of those just like slapstick comedies where it would just a normal person would play a caveman so primeval and over the top and not have any emotions whatsoever. Yeah, or like nuancing the performance.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I think I think his performance is the reason why this movie is a cult classic, and the reason that anyone still like talks about it, I think. Like I think he's like a driving actor in that.

SPEAKER_02Like, just chill. But then that doesn't happen because we're at a driving class, and the teacher and Robin's there, the teacher's kind of snarky, like, oh, again. Yes, and she's like, Well, I'll try and get it this time. And I'm like, Oh no, this thing always gets me. Are we stereotyping women for being bad drivers here? Is that what's happening? We sure are. Oh no, poor Robin. So then, like, Link's also there. And I'm like, Did anyone realize Link was taking this driving class? So no, because you answered your question. No, they didn't. Yeah, well, well, I think I think I was like, where is everyone? Like, how did this happen? And then they like see him through a window, and they're like, oh my god, he's gonna treat it like his favorite video game, Radmobile.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you know, the one he played two days ago.
SPEAKER_02I assumed he had played it more than that because we had like a little montage of time passing. Oh, that's true. We did. Okay, yeah, at that point we had.

SPEAKER_02So that that was my only guess is like, oh, this is his thing now, is Radmobile. I think you're right. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02Um so Stoney gets in the front seat. Dave only gets into the back window before they're off.

SPEAKER_02He did. Um, but like after, you know, a few weird back and forth, he's he hates it off with them very well, and they think he's weird and funny, and then they peer pressure him into drinking tequila. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I can I tell you, I forgot all about tequila worms and like the like the thing that like Yeah, yeah, I had fully forgotten that that was ever a thing. Like entirely. Like, as someone who enjoys tequila, I like fully forgot that it used to be this, like, oh, there's like a worm in it. If you eat it, it'll get you real fucked up. I'm like, I don't remember that being a thing. Like, I just fully left my brain.

Like, you should take this shot. And I was just like, I don't know. Like, I'm kind of uncomfortable with this. I don't know how this feels. And then it like it ends up being fine, but it's just like, I don't know, like, are you you're going through something, man? Like, I don't know. Also, nobody got carded getting in the door.

SPEAKER_03They run parallel, but someday no, no, they won't.
SPEAKER_02So back at the bar, Robin is like fully up on the bar dancing. I'm assuming she hasn't had anything to drink. Dave just looks sad. Yeah. I'm like, you're stupid.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you made yourself sad. Like you did. This is your this is on you, man.
SPEAKER_02You played yourself. Congratulations. Um, so Link like pulls her off the bar, they go dance. He sees something, it's super spicy salsa, he decides to drink it. Um, and then ingratiates himself into like almost a conga line. Yeah. During said conga line, Enrique pulls Link aside to threaten him, uh-huh, but mostly in Spanish.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So then Link pulls what he knows from Spanish, says some random words, and then Enrique's like, You're right, she's not worth it.
SPEAKER_03He says the cheese is old and moldy.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yeah. Like she she is, yeah, she's old. And then immediately after, said woman slaps him. Yeah. And then Enrique gets sad and is consoled by his friends. I'm like, what was this two-minute scene?
SPEAKER_03The journey of Enrique is very I love I do love when he goes up to to um Dave and Stoney and goes, You see that woman? Don't look at her. It's like, look at her, don't look at her. And it's like, I'm sorry. Don't look at me. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, it's just that. It's like, see her, don't you don't see her. Exactly.
SPEAKER_02I know. Yeah, I I really came around on Enrique pretty quickly. I know. It's like it wasn't even like the toxic, toxic masculinity of it because his friends consult it when it was sad.
SPEAKER_03And I was like, oh my god, what is this? It's so crazy. Yeah. There are some really frustrating men in this movie, but there's actually also some pretty wholesome masculinity, and it's kind of nice. It's a weird dichotomy.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. For being made in 1992, it's not as bad as it could be. Yes. Like there are levels to this, and not every guy in there is just like a full piece of trash. It's like, oh, you know, you have different things. Yeah, it's just, it's it's interesting. Yeah. So then the police arrive, uh-huh, and the bartender, not batting an eye, just yells, police immigration, and you're like, oh no. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's like everyone's scattered.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, everyone should everyone should go. Yeah. So mostly everyone leaves. Let's see. Stoney leaves with Robin and his new friends.
SPEAKER_04Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_02Because Dave's trying to get Link from hanging off of the ceiling.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, and they don't make it. They're taken to jail. Um Robin is driving, I'm assuming, one of these men's cars.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_02With all four of them in there as well. And she's just like, and they're just all like parroting off of each other, and she's just having to drive, because they're all drunk, I'm assuming, as well. And she's the only one that's sober.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Matt is waiting at Robin's house, and he's there to remind her about the prom. And she's like, I don't want to go with you. I want to go with someone who's cool, someone cool who's not afraid to be himself and have fun. Then close the door, and Matt's like, I'm cool. Um but so who knows who she's going with now? I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Someone cool, but who was cool?
SPEAKER_02Who's cool out of all these people? It's hard to say.
SPEAKER_03Crazy.
SPEAKER_02Oh man. Meanwhile, in jail, Dave gets one phone call and he's like, I'm gonna use it on Robin. So in typical creeper Dave fashion, he's like, Hey, you're my only phone call, so just go to the prom with me. Like, basically, like, you owe me.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And you're like, just do it. I I can't, I should have written down exactly what he said, but he's just like basically like, do this for me. I use my one phone call on you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's like pinning that on it's like I made this choice, so you owe me, basically.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. You owe me. Yeah, yeah, exactly. And it's like, you piece of shit.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, and thank God she says no, in parentheses, I said, hell yeah. And she's like, I want to go with Link. Can you ask him for me? And then, and then she like kind of backtracks and is like, wait, we can all go. And then he hangs up on. I know. Like, I mean, honestly, it's not like she did any better by being like, Hey, can you ask your friend for me? She should have just been like, No, the end.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think it should have been like, No, I'm good, but we can all go together. Like, don't, don't jump to hey, Link's there too. Can you ask him while you're while you're together?
SPEAKER_02Like, that's not yes, yeah. If you want to ask Link, just wait.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Robin, that's not that wasn't the move.
SPEAKER_02No. So it's it's the fix. They're all in high school. It's the high school show for the both of them.

SPEAKER_02Oh no, wait. So I said they somehow get out of jail and it's raining at night. Like there was no discussion of it.
SPEAKER_03I wrote that. I wrote that too. I was like, okay, does he does he get Link's phone call in that case? Because Link's not gonna use it. Like, do they like share like that? I don't know. I I wrote, how did they get out of jail? That was one of the things.
SPEAKER_02I'd have no I have no idea. No idea. I think we kind of vaguely hear about it later. Okay. Because Dave's like, yeah, I'm I'm grounded or whatever. But like, other than that, so then it's the next day. Dave is driving a car with Link in the back.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Uh to school.
SPEAKER_02So Oh, go ahead.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, so so we're getting we're getting into the car and we're and and you know, Link is in the backseat and Dave is driving away. And I wrote with different music, this would be Dave, Dave taking Link like out to the desert to kill him or something. This is like with different music, like right now, it's just like, oh man, like kind of melancholy 90s movie. Like, I don't know what to do. I'm conflicted with like different, more sinister music. This would be like, oh, he's gonna murder him. Like, he's gonna put him back in the ground.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I think at this point I didn't know what was going on. That's true. I don't think I was really tracking like it was only when he was like out of the car with a backpack, yeah, was I was like, oh my god, wait. Um so so yeah, but you're right, he's putting him in the back like a sad dog. Yeah. Um, and then Stoney arrives on the scooter and Dave like just totally like ignores him and drives away.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah. Stoney says, Wait, how is jail? Did you meet anyone? I love it.
SPEAKER_02So but then then Dave he he like drops Link off with a backpack and a shit ton of quarters for Radmobile. And so this is my annotating in all caps. I said, What the fuck, dude? He literally says, Go on, get out of here, leave, go. I'm like, he is not a sad dog, Dave. Yeah. So at this point, I had paused it because I was like, is he old yellering him? Yeah. But when I Googled it, it said that that didn't happen in old yeller, because old yeller was killed because he got rabies, because he was protecting the kid. So it wasn't the go on, but I could not figure out what movie the go on get was for us. Whitefang.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think it's white fing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's white fang. Oh shit. Okay, that didn't come up. Oh man, okay. Because then I was like something about where the red fern girls are going like all these. Oh no, like all the dog books. A sad dog movie. Well, like tailspin online trying to figure out my reference that I was trying to make in my own.

It was like the the not, I'm gonna say old yeller, it's not that, but the old yeller in of a thing or a dog or whatever, and then the horse girl moment of petting something.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. Yeah, it's like like reaching your hand out for it, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, to just like touch an animal or something and comment down or whatever. But yeah, he he's white fanging him. Yeah. And I'm like, how fucking dare you? And thank God Stoney shows up and he's like, What the fuck? Yeah. Like, what do you do? Yeah. He truth bombs Dave, like you were just trying to use him. And then Dave gets mad and says Stoney cares about nothing, which now looking at the context of his life, we don't know what's going on.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So so the quote he says, the only things you care about is nugs, chilling, and grindage. I don't know what that is. I know. So, okay. So in the credits of the movie, a lot of women and female characters are referred to as nugs. So nugs are women. I don't know how, I don't know how like phonetically that like got from point A to point B. I don't know. Um, chilling, I feel like is self-explanatory. Just sure. Yeah. Um, and then grindage is food.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Got it.
SPEAKER_03So that's so that's where I'm at. But also it's that helps. Yeah, but also it is exactly like you're saying, like, with the context of like, hey, maybe Stoney's life is kind of sad, like, maybe cut him some fucking slack, Dave.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And like he's also showing more humanity to this this caveman than you are, Dave. Yeah, right. Because he's not you wanted him up until the point where people like him more than you, and literally the girl that you wanted to take to prom wants to take him instead. Yeah. So he's not serving your purpose, so now you don't want him.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then um, Stoney calls Dave a loser and it's like, oh, maybe Matt was right about you. And I was like, oof, that's that's low. Yeah for you know, but we're we're saying things we don't mean. Yeah. So then they start to like fight, and uh Link turns around and stops them and like grabs them and tries reminds them that they're family.
SPEAKER_03Okay, this is the other scene where Brendan Frazier brings so much gravitas to this scene. I'm like, oh my god, you doesn't say anything. No, I'm like, you are a dramatic actor in this scene. You are like the emotional core of this. It's just like, no, like we we have to stick together, we can't fight each other. But like you're not saying anything, you're just saying it off your face. And I'm like, you're really good at this. You're a good actor.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So good. So they they they make up, everything's okay. Um, Link gets to come back home. Uh, then we cut to Dave's getting Link ready for the prom. Uh Robin's there, and she looks really nice. She tries to get Dave to come with them, and Dave's like, nah, I'm gonna stay. I'm like grounded slash on probation. So something happened to jail slash or with his parents.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Where they were like, hey, stop it. Yeah. So then uh Stony and Link are hanging out by the pool that was filled with water because it rained the night before.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, thank God.
SPEAKER_02Drinking something alcoholic? I don't know. I was confused by because the glasses were weird too. But then they're they just kind of resigned themselves to like do better in college. And I was like, well, that's kind of cute. That's kind of what we said at the beginning, but that's okay. And then Matt and A crony are at the house because they're they're determined that you know to to find something. Yeah. So they go into Dave's room. Matt immediately breaks some shit, but then conveniently comes incredible.
SPEAKER_05That hammock fight is so good.
SPEAKER_03Another bit of the physical comedy. Another bit of great physical comedy, yeah. I mean, yeah.
SPEAKER_02For not getting a lot of good parts of this movie, that was pretty good for uh for uh Michael was Michael Deluise, yeah. Deluise, yeah, yeah. That was pretty good.
SPEAKER_03He's got he may he's not in many scenes, but man, he makes them worth it.
SPEAKER_01He does, and and le and you haven't quite gotten to him leaving the room, but he finds what he's looking for and the lamp. The fact that he just he goes to shut the lamp off and he's like, No, and throws the lamp on the ground.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. Oh my god, I didn't even notice that. Okay.
SPEAKER_01He goes to be polite about it and he was like, No, I'm trashing his room.
SPEAKER_02This house, yeah, yeah. They're such good movies. Yeah. So so after the the hammock fight, he he breaks something and comes across all of the Polaroids that are conveniently labeled.
SPEAKER_03So meticulous.
SPEAKER_02Literally, one of them says link on ice, basically, or something like that. I'm like, what is happening?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So they leave the house with those and like make a lot of noise, and then the sister like alerts Matt and Stoney that there was basically someone in the house and nobody knew. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Which is also terrifying. Like, where, like, what is happening? Yeah. Where are the parents? Yeah. No idea. They bailed him out and then said, we can't deal with you. We have to go.
SPEAKER_01They only got the parents for two scenes in this movie.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that was. Yeah, pretty much. Yeah. We got the back of the mom's head in the beginning, and that was about it.
SPEAKER_02So uh they see the Polaroids. Uh, they see that Matt has them. Um, but he he gets away. Then my next note is that an earthquake happens at the house. They had already left, though, right? That um chasing after Matt and then and then the earthquake happened. Okay. Um, so then we're at prom. Robin is already prom queen, uh-huh. And Link is about to be crowned prom king, uh-huh, but Matt shows up to stop it. He takes the mic to expose the truth, and they're like, he and he says, Link's a caveman, and everyone cheers. Yeah. And Matt gets so mad that everyone is fine with it.
SPEAKER_01Only after the reprisal of the loudest. Because he grabs the mic and he's like trying to get everybody's attention. Oh yeah. He's like, stop playing, stop playing, stop playing. And everybody's talking, and he's like, Sheesh!
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, when Robin interrupts him, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh, so good. And then just the hesit uh like the build-up.
SPEAKER_00It's like, do you want to know what he is? The truth. Yeah. Do you want to know the truth what he is? And he's just like, he's a caveman. And I'm like, how do you Oh yeah, the delivery? How is that how much?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's he's like, yeah, obviously.

SPEAKER_02It's yeah, it's not like burn him at the stake. It's like this is what he is.

SPEAKER_03Dave says, give those back. Matt goes, no, and then punches him. Just so flat, just no.
SPEAKER_02No. Yes. Um, so Link comes up to Matt, bows to him, and then starts like kung fu and wrestling fighting him. Uh-huh. And then I don't know what the move is called, gets him like on his shoulders and starts spinning him around and throws him into a cake. A giant sheet cake. Don't remember a cake at prong.
SPEAKER_03We didn't do that. No.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was like, that was not definitely not a thing. No. Um, so Robin is on the stage, picks up the pictures, and looks scandalized. Like she's the only one who's truly realized this is real. I know. Stoney goes over to pour punch on top of Matt. Uh huh. Just to like, you know, icing on the cake, basically.
SPEAKER_03Tells him to shush.
SPEAKER_01Tells him to shush.
SPEAKER_03And then does this little queen wave to the rest of the crowd. Yeah. Of like, all right, good for you, starting.
SPEAKER_01I wasn't part of this fight, but I ended it.

SPEAKER_02I and I and I helped. So, um, so then the music starts back up again, and Link just has to dance.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02This is the point where I say, this has a good soundtrack. I need to look this up later.
SPEAKER_03Yes. So I'm glad you mentioned that because the band, so this is one of my one of my trivia bits that I think.
SPEAKER_02I knew they would be a thing.
SPEAKER_03Yes. So the band playing at prom is a funk metal super group called Infectious Grooves. Um, they uh it includes um someone from uh the punk band Suicidal Tendencies, there's someone from Jane's Addiction, and there is um Robert, is it Robert Trujillo, who was in Suicidal Tendencies and currently plays in Metallica. Oh my god. Yeah, so it's like a legitimate like super group that like does stuff.
SPEAKER_02How very Cobra Starship of them. Before Cobra Starship, of course. That's so fun. Okay, I knew there was gonna be a thing, and I was like, I don't recognize you, but the way that this movie's going, it's something up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's like this is um everything is intentional like that. It's just like here's a band. And I'm like, what's your deal though?
SPEAKER_02Like, okay, sure, it's just a band. Yes. So Lynx Dancing, Stoney joins in on the dance, and then Dave is like, watch this to Robin. And I was like, What? You could dance the whole time. I said, Oh, look at him go.
SPEAKER_03Oh, look, Dave's fun now.
SPEAKER_02I guess after he didn't do anything, after he got punched, and then his friend beat up his bully.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So then there's like this entire dance sequence was I said, Okay, cute. Like, we're I'm fine with this. Dance thing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, a little choreograph dance number, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And then like everyone rides to Dave's house in Limos and they have the pool party that Dave always wanted.
SPEAKER_01So the dance was comprised of a lot of moves that remember he stepped on the remote and turned the TV on, and it was like that nature show. And it was them dancing. It was a lot of those moves were in that dance in the uh gym. So it was like oh, he saw the tribal dancing and it was like now.
SPEAKER_03So, like, this is even just like a fusion of like the other dancing that he's done in this movie. It's just like collaboration of cultures and stuff. That's that's fun. I like this.
SPEAKER_02Look at him go. Yeah. We're at the cool pool party.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so at the cool pool party, when Robin and Dave are sitting next to each other, and Robin says, What you did was really cool. What the fuck did Dave do? What the what did he do? Exactly like you said, he got up on stage, got punched, and then someone else beat up his bully. Like, maybe because he was trying to stop Matt.
SPEAKER_01Or maybe because he hopped in and started dancing. And maybe she is just that simple. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I want to give her some.
SPEAKER_02You know, that is a good point.
SPEAKER_03He did actually deflect, and I'm like, good, you shouldn't do anything.

SPEAKER_02I don't know. Yeah. Well, don't worry, because in just a second, once they're kissing, Link shows up in between them eating food and goes, ah, Dave.

SPEAKER_05So cute.
SPEAKER_02Love him. He's a good wingman. He's so he's so good. And he's just genuinely happy for Dave. So uh, so we're like outside of the house, and Stoney and Link are looking at the glass door, and they see a mud imprint of hands and breasts. And you're like, oh, what's this? So they follow more cave drawings and dirty footprints up the stairs. And the smoke alarm do the exact same ah screen, but find uh Link's wife in the bathtub, already got it, got it to work in every.
SPEAKER_03She's got it figured out. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. She knows she needs to be clean.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So she recognizes him. They get so happy and excited. I'm like, this is adorable. Um, cut two, we've got her all clean and dressed up. Uh-huh. Stoney and Link are both appreciating her. Kind of weird, you guys. Kind of weird.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. It's like, we've done a good job here. Good for us.
SPEAKER_02Well, also, I don't know. I just I wouldn't say it was that. It was more just like appreciating the female form. And I'm like, okay, yeah, she's right there. Yeah. Yeah. That's fair. Um, but don't worry, because uh then he then they kiss, and then it's the end. Oh yeah. And then you got Stoney doing his version of I'll be back. Yeah. And then credits.

SPEAKER_01It is such a stupid movie, but it's so fun. I just I I can keep I can keep watching that movie.
SPEAKER_03It had been a little bit since I'd watched it the last time, and I have not seen it many times. Um I laughed out loud at more stuff than I thought I was going to. Like there was more stuff that got me. I was like, okay, this is fun. Like this, all right, I'm having a good time.

And I can imagine after the first time, especially watching it more critically than you would normally, I think I can let it wash over me another time and just be like, this is just stupid. This is just silly. And I can like the good parts and ignore the problematic parts, basically. And just be happy with it.

SPEAKER_03Well, do we want to talk about who we think is the main character? You're right. I forgot I said that.

SPEAKER_03It's frustrating because I feel like there is a solid case for all three of the main guys. Because I feel like Polly Shore had the star power when this movie was produced. And it's clearly like, you know, a vehicle for him. But I also I feel like if they wanted him to be a main character, they would have fleshed out his like entire character and life a little bit more. Like I feel like that kind of kicks him out of main character running. I feel like that's like Yeah, he's sidekick. Yes, I really think so.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I think so.
SPEAKER_01I think because the entire movie involves those two, I think I just always sort of lumped those two together as the main character.
SPEAKER_03Which too. That's fair. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because like movie starts and like he Yeah, Dave is is digging, but it's seconds later he's running out of the house with a stolen bagel. Like he's always there. Yeah. So it's it's just always those two. And that's I think in my mind, it's them as uh a main character, but there's a very solid, solid point for Link to be the main character.
SPEAKER_02Right, because he really bookends the movie.
SPEAKER_01He certainly does. He ends up he ends up with the girl in the end.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh. Right.
SPEAKER_01He ends up going through the trauma and the the healing and the everything. So like he goes through the entire main character.

SPEAKER_01And it's like, yeah, I guess everybody's a main character.

SPEAKER_03He's he's really the one who like grows and learns through the movie and like, you know, does like is different from the starting point to the end. I don't think Dave has changed significantly enough. Absolutely. I don't think Dave has learned his lesson. I think Dave needs to be punished for his crimes.

SPEAKER_02Like none of the none of these, I mean, to be fair, like he's also not a teenager. Yeah. Um, so like if we look at any of these teenagers, none of them learned any lessons at all.
SPEAKER_03So it's fair.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. I think I like the duo as a main character or Link as a main character. Yeah. Interesting.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Unfortunately, we were just anti-Dave as an individual.
SPEAKER_01So easily. Easily. But I don't think the movie would have been what it was without Dave.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. No. We wouldn't have found him without Dave. Dave had ambitions. Oh, that's true.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the whole pool was his idea, anyways. Also, can we talk about how wild it is that his parents just let him dig a pool in their backyard?

SPEAKER_03All right. Um, so as far as ratings, Emily, you are first as the newbie. Yes.
SPEAKER_02Okay. I like I like that we do this at the end after we talk about it because I feel like it can help me get a better um feel for the movie without being so critical about it. Yeah. So gosh, I would say seven out of ten icy. Because like we we all know like the parts that didn't age, or like the the silly parts, or like the the main character has flaws part. Like and I was worried that was gonna be like, no, you just like you ignore that and you pretend that he's a good guy. Uh I was worried it's like, no, he's the hero, but I felt better talking to you two about it. Afterwards, I was like, oh, okay, it's not just me that's like, he's not that good of a yeah.
SPEAKER_05We're not just like, what do you mean?
SPEAKER_03Dave's fine. Yeah. I mean, kind of, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, no, that's really fair.
SPEAKER_03And that was partially why I why we had watched it like a week before. Like, normally we'll listeners, we'll watch like a couple days or so before we record. This one I was like, I want to watch this and make sure that there are no like glaring red flags that I forgot about where I'm like, Emily, we can't watch this. Oh, really?
SPEAKER_02I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_03I wanted to, I didn't think there were any, but I was like, I just want to make sure it's been a minute. And I was like, I've seen worse 90s movies, I've seen worse, you know, representation in 90s movies. I'm like, this is honestly generally not as bad as, you know, for the time, it's pretty good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. So that's that's what I think.
SPEAKER_03So a seven out of ten, is that just is that just underneath the icy nozzle for seven seconds or yes, you wheeze the juice for seven seconds. Nice.

SPEAKER_03Yeah. Excuse me? Which half? This was fun. Um yeah. Um, well, Mark, thank you so much for being on the podcast for the first of absolutely more times. We're definitely gonna have to And bringing a good movie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm I'm just super happy it got sevens from from the cinema system.
SPEAKER_03I think you were worried. You were like you're gonna hate it.
SPEAKER_01I was genuinely worried because like this is uh this isn't this is a bad movie. Like it it's it's not bad, like it's it's bad in the same way that you love Sharknado movies. Like it's oh yeah, like the disaster ones, yeah. Yeah, it's such a like a a niche that you either heard about it and you loved it when it came out, or you end up in your position where didn't even know it existed. Yeah, it's 2026. So um for what it is, I loved it as a comedy just growing up and I don't know, sharing it's fun. And I'm I'm glad it was received well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. And like Kate said, we're over the trying to love movies because they're cinema or whatever. It's like I like what I like, and I'm just gonna rate whatever the fuck I want. Like, did I have a good time? Yeah, it's did I like it? Yeah. I do worry about setting the bar too high or too low and being harsh, but like that's just for my own sake, not because I think people are gonna be like, ew, gross.
SPEAKER_03And honestly, it's nice to watch a movie and just have a good time. That's kind of nice. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because we've had some heavy ones already in 11 episodes.
SPEAKER_01Some heavy two and a half and three hour ones.
