Cleave Outdoors
Hey, thanks for checking us out. This podcast channel is dedicated to all things upland & waterfowl. We once lived in the Big Bend of Florida, and fell in love with its double-edged sword scene of upland and waterfowl hunting. We were sandwiched between the Red Hills of Thomasville GA, known for its rich plantation history and bobwhite quail life, and the Gulf with its diverse waterfowl migration. Since then, my wife & I have moved near Statesboro GA and carried our passion and all we learned from "wing shooting" with us.
My wife & I enjoy spending time together in the outdoors with our dogs hunting and guiding, so we decided to change the podcast name to "Cleave Outdoors" based off of Gen. 2:24 where we are commanded to "cleave" to our spouse. Debbie and I adventure the hunting world together, so this podcast will not only bridge the gap of the upland & waterfowl life, but also share our time in it with you. We will talk birds, dogs, hunting style, history, etx. Click...listen.....share!

Um, there's been a couple good guys I've had on the show, and I have a couple more planned, but I think this is probably gonna top the charts this time with the two guys, these two brothers I have tonight on the show with me. But before we do, I do want to get into uh just thanking our sponsors. Um, number one is Kevin's Find Outdoor and Apparel. They're located in Tallahassee and Thomasville, Georgia. Um, you can go online at Kevinscatalog.com and check them out. They are anything for your upland, they're they're an upland game um brick and mortar store. Very old store. I don't mean like decor, but just like they've been around for a long time. Um so if you're ever around the Tallahassee or Thomasville, Georgia corridor down there driving, uh, you definitely want to make a stop in there. Anything upland, whether it's apparel, guns, shells, dog training stuff. They also do a bunch of home decor and and and table settings. And also they venture into duck hunting as well, and also um your safari hunting. So that's Kevin's Fine Outdoor and Apparel. And you can look online at Kevin'sCatalog.com. Next is uh John Kohler and Associates. He's a buddy of mine. He is the leading in the South, he's the leading recreational realtor. Uh, so it's John Kohler and Associates. If you're looking for your next recreational property, or maybe you're looking to sell your recreational property. What do I mean by recreational? Um typically it's like hunting property, you know, large acreages that you may and people use for um like quail reserves or hunting leases or something like that. Give John Kohler and Associates a call because they know the who's who. Like they've already done all the work. So all they got to do is get pictures of it, make a video of it, and get it posted if you're looking to sell it. And they know the people are ready. But also, if you're in if you're looking for a property, why not go to the best? Why not go to who has all the hookups? That's John Kohler and Associates. So give them a check. Um, Flat Creek Lodge, it's one of my uh main lodges, preserves that I uh that I guide at. It's in Swainsboro, Georgia area. You can find them at flatcreeklodge.us. Um if you're looking not only for quail hunting or pheasant hunting or even deer hunting and fishing, but if you're also looking for like a weekend getaway, they have like, what's it, eight lodges uh that can uh fit up to eight people per lodge, or if you're looking to have like a business venue or like a business summit, um, they also rent that out or weddings. Just a beautiful, beautiful place. They have 17 lakes or ponds on the property. Um, they're just hooked up with Under Over Clothing Company, um, if you heard about them, and they uh they got on there for their Epic Quell Adventure series. And uh, so it's a pretty great place. Check them out. And lastly, is my personal short hair breeder is uh Eagle Ranch Kennels out of Statesboro, Georgia. Brad Trower is the man. And um, I got a you guys know I've been talking about it. I got first pick mail coming up on a pretty epic uh litter. Uh I I I don't know if I can online talk about it yet. Who's who uh I there just put it this way there is a famous international um sire that has been brought to the U.S. And um it's gonna be the dad of this litter, and I am looking forward to it immensely. And this breeding should take place in the next month or two, and I'll have my last, well at least for now, my last short hair. Um and that way it'll give me four dogs. So that's Eagle Ranch Kennels. You can go online and find them at ERK Gun Dogs. That's Eagle Ranch. So it's E-R-K Gun Dogs with an S dot com. Um you can go check them out online. So I just want to give a big shout-out to all the sponsors, but also if you're just listening to it for the first time, or maybe you've listened to the podcast and you haven't done it yet, hit the subscribe button. Um, I don't get paid, I don't get paid for doing my podcast. I do it because my wife and I love the outdoors. We enjoy talking to people that love the outdoors, that share the same uh qualities, show the same traits, even beliefs sometimes as we do. And um, it just gives good content out there in between hunting seasons, or even if you're on a hunting, you know, hunting adventure and you can tune in and listen to some stuff. It makes some good campfire listening. But uh click on that subscribe button because you'll get uh updates when we drop new episodes on the podcast channel. So without further ado, um, like I mentioned, one of the most epic uh uh podcasts I've recorded in quite some time, I have the Upland Brothers with me. Um if you haven't, I don't know where you've been, maybe you've been living underneath the blog for the last year or two years. But if you haven't heard of them or seen their videos on YouTube, um, yeah, you must be living underneath the blog because these guys are awesome, man. The content they put out on YouTube is epic. They they have a love for upland hunting, love for dogs. They have amazing dogs. Um and uh they provide great, great content on YouTube. They really do. Um, you all you gotta do is YouTube is look up the Upland Brothers and um and uh check them out. And definitely like and subscribe, hit the bell on their page, subscribe, you know, subscribe to their channel, hit the bell on their YouTube channel as well, so that way when they drop new episodes, uh, and I can't talk about it on the podcast because I didn't get permission to. But uh there should be some more uh podcast uh uh or uh YouTube episodes coming up if I pressure them um um well enough. But um nonetheless, click that uh bell and get uh subscribed to their channel because I promise you you will not be uh upset whatsoever, man. It'll uh it'll make you want to go buy another dog and go out west, just put it that way. So I have Adrian and Alberto Malvarez with me tonight, the Upl, also known as the Upland brothers, and we're gonna kind of get this podcast started. Thank you guys for joining me tonight. Thank you for having us. We appreciate uh being here with you. All right. So this that is Adrian, right? Yes. And Alberto, you're still on the call, right, buddy?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm still here. Hey, I just want to say thank you very much. It's very kind of uh kind of you to refers to us that way. It means a lot, and um, you know, really excited to be here, and it's a pleasure. Yeah, man.
SPEAKER_03I it's uh it's an honor for me to have you guys on the show. I've been I've been a uh faithful subscriber to your YouTube channel, and it's almost like a boy crush I got going on right now. Man, I got these guys, and and I gotta give a shout out. They are northerners, they're up on the up. I y'all know I grew up in Maryland, so I mean they were, they're not now. We'll talk about it in a second, I guess, but they're no longer kind of in the Jersey area where they're where they I guess were limped at. But uh, but it doesn't matter. They're still up north. So they, you know, we share that commonality of of of living up on the northeast side of the of the states. So um, yeah, guys, uh first kind of question or kind of talking point is why don't you guys introduce yourself? I don't mind who goes first, but maybe talk about your family, your age, maybe what you do for work, um, kind of any hobbies you have, stuff like that. Just some random facts about you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'll let the big brother go first. Alright, Alberta. Look at that. All right, sounds good. Well, since my brother said big brother, I guess some of you may wonder by how much. Um, I'm six years older than my brother. We always had a gap in in the stage of our lives, and um I'm 33 now, so you could do the math for my brother, or I should say in a in three days or so, I'm gonna be 30, 33. Um and then my brother is gonna have his birthday in November. But anyways, um we um um we got here, we're not originally from the US. Um, you know, we got here in 2010, and it's been um a pleasure and honor to be here. Um, you know, from uh a family point of view or origins, as you know, we come from the country of Cuba, and then um, you know, a little bit of um who we are and then what we do, or at least you know, for myself. Um you know, first of all, um I've been gracious enough to be saved, and I'm I'm son of God. Um saved back in May of 2010, um, and had the privilege for that. And um and I appreciate you you you inviting us here. Um, you know, it means a lot to be able to talk about God and things laid down on the podcast, and that's yeah, that's awesome. Um, and then um, you know, like I said, I'm 33 years old. I have a wife. I've been married for about eight years. Um, I have a one and a half year old uh little girl. Um I have another baby on the way. I don't know if it's a code yet, but um I'm super stoked and and happy about that. Um baby's coming at the end of November this year. Um on the professional side, I guess. Um I'm I'm an engineer by trade. Uh went schooled for mechanical engineer, uh, engineering, and then we've been still more in the construction field, more so than than uh the mechanical side. So been working as more as a civil engineer and construction, do a lot of mine construction. And recently I'm in the middle of moving. I'm gonna be living pretty close to my brother up in upstate New York, um, doing a little bit more highway and and bridge um bridge work up there for some big uh construction projects that we have going on out there. But um, you know, my hobbies, I would say it's it's this is the bird dogs. Um that's the only hobby that I have. Um I don't really have it, I'm I don't do anything else outside of that in terms of hobbies. Um and um yeah, I mean, that's I think that's pretty much it.
SPEAKER_03That's awesome, man. Like congratulations on on the newborn coming. That's awesome. Thank you. Appreciate it. Yeah. Adrienne, man, what's up? What's uh give me some talking points?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, I mean, pretty similar. We're brothers uh six years apart. I'm 26 now. Um, we've got a wife, we've been married for three, four years now, four years. Yeah. Bro, don't do that on a podcast. Just kidding.
SPEAKER_03It's actually right. She's looking right at me when I'm saying this. That's why I am you better nail that down and know the date, man. Come on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. July 30th, 2022. There you go. There you go. Faithful that way. Uh I have uh we have a l a son, little son. He's three months old right now. Um, you know, since our first baby. Um I have two dogs, uh, English Setter and uh GSP. My GSP is out of my brother's dogs. And then um yeah, English Setter I just got about a year ago, and we can talk more about that later. Uh, same thing, you know. Um I'm also a an engineer. Um I've uh taken a lot uh of uh from my brother in terms of an example. He's been a good example and a guy a good guy throughout the years. Um so we did we studied the same um career mechanical engineering, and then um he got me my first inter inter um internship at the same company. So we worked together for um a good five, six years, uh not in the same like uh group all the time, but for maybe a year or two we we worked together like in the same office. Um that was that was fun. Uh but then we I kind of ventured out uh to move to upstate New York uh with my wife because I I wanted to get out of the New Jersey uh area. It was too hectic in terms of traffic and even buying a house was pretty expensive um over there. And um, but we were doing marine construction, so it was tough to really find anything that was affordable and uh also near to the water. Um so I kind of vent ventured out um to uh upstate New York, uh so uh near Syracuse. Um and I started doing bridge construction up here about a year and a sub change ago, a year and a couple months ago. A year and a couple months. Um, and then I brought my brother over. He he took a job in the same company, and now we are kind of in the country in the middle of nowhere. Um, you know, we have uh a couple acres we can run dogs on, which is a lot of fun. Um and uh we can, you know, deer hung back there and uh train the dogs and and all that good stuff. So um, yeah, that's that's pretty much uh kind of our my my summary.
SPEAKER_03Nice. So you guys are from Cuba originally?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I got some we didn't talk about this before, but uh my uh I got a bunch of buddies of mine in in the Miami area um that uh own a bunch of short hairs and they're all from Cuba. Um so shout out to Emilio and my boys down there. They're uh phenomenal uh shorth trainers, and uh I learned a lot of uh I train in fact I use a lot of I guess Cuban words, I don't want to say Spanish word, but Cuban words to train my dogs. And everybody always look everybody always looks at me like I got like five heads, and I'm like, when they're like, what in the world? And I'm like, well, sorry, it's just the guys I grew the guys that I learned training from, and and yeah, I just give me one, please. So if I want my dog to come here, I give a stern if I I give a stern a key. And uh and uh and she comes and and and they all turn and they come and they come running at me, man. It it's so uh uh and then and then sometimes I say it weird, like I said, a key, and like you can't pastor, you can't say it like that. Like you gotta be stern when you say that word, because if not, it kind of sounds it it it it defeats the purpose. I'm like okay, okay, all right. That's funny.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that is something we would say. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, so yeah, that's pretty cool. That's awesome. Now I always wonder, I'm sorry to veer you off here. No, you're gonna how do you how do you guys train in Florida with all the alligators?
SPEAKER_03Both, right? So you guys you guys know I my my audience knows I also have waterfowl dogs. So um very gingerly, I guess. Uh you know, the it's true. If if you have water, if it's wet, there's a good chance there's a gator there, right? So like even on even on the side of the roads and like the culverts, like you gotta be like I've I love riding bikes, my my road bike, and I train for triathlons, and like I'd be riding on my bike on the road and look over in a culvert, and there'd be a four or five foot gator, just like chilling out and uh and in the so you you you you gotta be strategic on kind of where you go and train. A lot of mine, this is personal, a lot of mine, I had the I had the opportunity to train on preserves. So, like wide open, you know, uh big old tall Georgia pines, like the uh long leaf pines and stuff like that, and there's not much water. Um, but on their side, Miami side, on the East Coast side, I don't know how they do it. Like they show videos to me all the time that, hey, check out my dog, you know, I just got this puppy backing. And I'm like, you are next to like a big chunk of water. Like, what like bro, be careful. He's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, yeah, yeah, I know. So it's like one of those things for me, like being uh obviously I'm not from Florida, like I am overly protective and watch over my dogs. Like they're like, oh, it's just a gator. And I'm like, nah, it's not just a gator, bro. Like, that's a gator. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's just a gator. And I'm like, nah, like, no. And then, but the biggest thing, to be honest with you, it's not even the gators. It's the rattlesnakes down here. So you gotta watch out the rattlesnakes, the pygmy rattlers, the cotton mouse, and the white, and and and that that's my biggest fear for my dogs. Actually, I ran, I ran, I I had a guy's uh, actually two buddies of mine from Puerto Rico that um I got, I'm training both of their dogs. One one was a uh three-year-old short hair, and it was gun shy. He didn't know what he was doing and was just shooting a gun bite and got gunshot. And I took the dog for about four months and trained it out of being gun shy. It's a great dog, grip pointer now. And then uh his other buddy just bought a short hair from the same breeder that I have, and um and I'm training that dog, and we we we ran them. There's a reserve right next to my house uh where I live at where I passed her at. It's not even a mile away. And so I took him over there today, and um, that was always a fear. Like I'm I'm like, man, what if what if one of them gets snake bitten? Like, I gotta drive to Savannah for that. And Savannah is an hour and 10 minutes on a good day without traffic. And it's like you know, it it Georgia, and I didn't know this. I thought Florida was on the gators. You got Florida, you got Georgia, and South Carolina. All those states carry tons of gators. I didn't, I thought like, oh man, I'm getting out of, I'm getting out of gator country. And people are like, no, you're not. No, you're definitely still got gators up there. So yeah, you just you just try to find a, you know, a couple acres that's dry, but even that doesn't matter because gators obviously go from pond to ponds and they'll walk across, you know, miles of dry lane to get to another body of water. So like you just kind of do your scouting. How I did it, I would put up um like game cameras, and uh, and I would, I would, before I wanted to kind of go train in an area, I would put like four or five game cameras up and I would watch the area for about a week or two weeks just to make sure there was nothing out there. And then and then I would go and I do the same thing when I would duck hunt, and but I would hang like a like a chicken lades over the water, and I would, and and I would put a game camera up there to see if there was any gators in the water before I let my labs go in there for duck hunting. Um so yeah, you gotta be strategic. But um I'll I'll say this, and I'm not from the South, but South dogs can hunt anywhere because our year is so hot and humid. Like you take our dogs and where we hunt our dogs down here half an hour, 45 minutes um in the heat of summer, which you take anybody's northern dogs and you bring them down here, they're lucky if they last 10-15 minutes. Yeah, but yes, that ours will run about 45 minutes. If you but you take that same dog and you go anywhere in the US, it doesn't matter, man. They're gonna be able to run and and uh I mean maybe not like maybe the same in Arizona or South Texas or something, which gets that dry heat, but you go up north, my my dogs will run two or three, four hours straight and be completely fine. Like this is great. Um so that I guess that is a good caveat for you know a trade-off, I guess, is is they get heat resistant pretty good down here. Yeah. But hey, so um so how how um what how'd you guys end up in in the upland world being upstate? I mean, I'm from the north, so I I still know there's upland hunting up there. Some people may be like upstate New York. They think of New York like New York City, and that's that's not the whole state of New York, right? Yeah, um, yeah, yeah, I know. They should be separated upstate and New York City. They're two different things. Yeah, definitely. Should be. What uh how how do you guys get into the upland world?
SPEAKER_00Well, I guess I have to take that question because I I'm still one who got into it. Um I guess going back to when I was in high school, um, you know, I wanted to I guess we're gonna go even further back. We're gonna go to back to Cuba. Um growing up, we did a lot of morning dove hunting. And uh when I say that, a lot of people would think, yeah, you s you sit down in the field, put some decoys out, and shoot doves flying by with a shotgun. It was nothing like that. Um, all we had access to was little pellet guns. I think it's like um like the air guns that shoot uh I think it's caliber 0.177, something like that.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_00And uh that's what we did. I mean, uh we would rent them. I would work sometimes on the weekends just so I can go and rent a pellet gun. Um on nobody really owned any over there, a couple of people sometimes, so you couldn't really battle or anything like that. So we would go out and hunt morning doves up in tree branches and other type of bird species and uh that are very native to the country of Cuba. And then lots of times you we would even do it with slingshots too, and slingshots and rocks, you know. Sounds funny enough, but you know, that's kind of how I've I got started as a kid, you know, filled my pockets with rocks and go out into the wood to the slingshot and rocks and trying to get some of those morning doves shot, and and then it evolved from that into the Pelican, and then my brother uh started joining me on that, and we had some fun hunts together uh with Pelicans and fast forward here to the United States. Um I went to high school and I really wanted to hunt deer. I did you know, I knew we had deer here and I knew people hunted deer, but that was never something I I did before. So I got into wanting to get a hunting license and stuff. My high school teacher uh happened to also be from Cuba, and he explained to me that I needed a hunting license, blah blah blah. And and so I went and got my license, and he took me pheasant hunting for the first time when I was in high school. We didn't have a dog or anything like that. Um we have a or New Jersey has a um stock uh uh pheasant program where they release pheasants uh like many other states, and um so he took me out there. We just kind of walked the fields and see what we could run into. Um I shot my first pheasant doing that, and then I was like, okay, well, I want to get a little bit into more deer hunting, so I really picked up deer hunting, bow hunting primarily uh for man, all my years through college. Um and I was really going strong at that, and it wasn't until my last year of college, um probably, yeah, right after, actually right after graduating college, that I went ahead and and I was like, hey, we should probably try some pheasant hunting this year just to kind of switch it up and do do pheasant hunting in the morning, deer hunting in the afternoon. And so at at this point, I kept hunting all this year. So my high school teacher uh was like a dad to me. And um, you know, the first day we went pheasant hunting, um, I took my wife, uh my friend Um Leva, high school teacher, he took his wife. We went out into the fields walking and looped into a couple of birds and got one or two birds, and then we're driving home, and I told my wife, do you want to get a dog? And my wife was all for it. She loves dogs. And I said, All right, you Google best pheasant hunting dog breeds. And she went in there, started Googling this, and the whole list came up, and I have no idea about any of these dogs. I never knew anything about the breeds, and I thought I like that one, and it was a short hair. And then I heard they sold pretty cheap dogs in in PA compared to buying them somewhere in New Jersey, and and so I was like, you know what? Can you Google like puppies, you know, German short herd pointer puppy for sale in um PA? And she found one, the cheapest one was $300. What? Yeah, we messaged them, they didn't reply the second cheapest was $400, and it was it was an Amish dog, $400, and this is all happening while we're going from the field back to the house. Um, and uh they got back to us, yes, the dog is available. She was about 12 weeks old. Uh, we said, okay, well, I almost asked her for a discount of $400. I was like, oh, you know what, it's fine, it's cheap enough. It's not like $2,000. Like, you need yours, is what I was thinking, right? So, anyways, I'm totally ignorant here to just about everything, okay? Um, exactly what you don't do is what I did. And um we we got home, we ate some food, and we drove out to pay three or four hours the same day, picked up this dog, wrote it all the way home, and I said, I want to train this dog, and that dog is Lila. And yeah, if if you have watched the videos, um Lila has turned out to be a phenomenal hunting dog, um, phenomenal companion in the house and all around. I mean, in in the dog testing world. Um, she happened to have AKC registration papers with her.
SPEAKER_03For $300?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for $400.
SPEAKER_03For $400, my goodness.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, AKC paper. They didn't register for me. They said, you know, it comes to AKC registration. I had no idea what AKC was. And I I just took the paperwork and I said, great. You know, it's a big plus. Um, all I wanted to do was go hunt festings in the New Jersey stock festing program for whatever that's worth. Um, so, anyways, uh long the shore, um, I started training her. Uh, I ran into some um NAFTA people. I don't know if you're familiar with NAFTA. Yep, yep. I ran into some NAFTA people in a game land, um, state game land. And you know, saw me out there training with my dog. I had no idea what I was doing. I started watching some YouTube videos. This is now middle of COVID. And the reason for me getting a dog had nothing to do with COVID. I got her like the fall between COVID started. And long story short, um got hooked up with Navda. Um, actually, I started training her with YouTube videos from Standing Stone kennels.
SPEAKER_02Oh, nice.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That's that was my I that was my starting point. I had no idea. I never trained a dog like this before. I, you know, I went on YouTube. Um I I came across her channel, and I man, I must have watched most of their videos on on puppies, you know. Um I watched the videos when they were training Quests. I don't know if you know um the dog and and and some of Nick's and um just a little bit of of uh all the dogs that they had on there, you know, Thunder, and and I watched a lot of those videos, their force fetch videos, their um intro to e-collar conditioning and um recall. I mean, I watched all of those, anyways. Um then I also ran into a local guy that took me to a NAFTA and told me about testing NA, all of that. And I was like, uh, an NA title? I don't know what that is, but sure, sounds cool. Anyways, we go through this is middle of COVID, right? Now it's 2020. I'm still training my dog. I run my dog in NA. She was about a year old. Um, if you're familiar with with NAFTA, um, we got 104 points out of 112 for a natural ability uh test.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um price won.
SPEAKER_00And uh no, it wasn't a price wamp because we lost all of our points on the track.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um I screwed it up, I got her out of the car way before I met her stay at sick because she was all on top and stuff, and by the time I brought her up to the track, she concentration concentration was completely thrown off. We got a one on track out of four, and that kicked us back to a price three. However, we had force and everything else. We have force in the field, force on point, force and search. She was a fool all around. Um, drove home, all bummed out, you know, all that. Even considered going and taking a test in another state and all that. And I said, you know what, forget it. Up I'm just gonna go hunting. And then the first hunting season started, and that's when I uh I, you know, I brought my brother along since the first day. We both had COVID, actually. What? We had we both had COVID, and um, you know, he had gotten his license. I knew he really liked shooting the shotgun and and um, you know, clay shooting, you know, um the clay pigeons and and stuff like that. And we did it, you know, kind of like at an open range in New Jersey where you can bring your own clays and shoot them by hand and stuff like that, and then all up in the air and then shoot them. He loved doing that. My brother was a lot into video games and stuff like that. And I've been trying to get him into the outdoors with deer hunting, but he just wasn't the type of guy to sit in a tree stand and for a long time, and that would get him bored. But the dog really pulled him in because we went hunting the first day, we waited for everybody to go home, and we went like noontime, and we hunted for about two hours, so finally got into the first bird. Bird went up in the air, a fessing, uh, it was a cockbird. He shot at it, and and then he hit it, and then it kept flying a little bit, and then we both took shots, and the thing went down, and he goes, Let's go! It's like I like hung for two more hours right now. And we and that was that right there, man. That was the beginning of it.
SPEAKER_03Um I I I will have to stop and pause it because Adrian, you that is one of the catchphrases you say in all your videos. Let's go! Let's go! Like you you scream that all the time, bro. Like all the time. It it's awesome.
SPEAKER_01You you'll notice like on our earlier, like a couple years ago, like three years when we started posting videos, I say it a lot, especially like our main videos or New Hampshire when we went rouse honey. Because it was all so new to us. You know, it's like uh it was all so new to me, you know. Uh and the excitement of like, you know, dog on point, bird flushes, shot taken, bird drops, it's like, oh my goodness. Like, is there another way to describe that? No, there's not.
SPEAKER_02No. Let's go.
SPEAKER_01Uh as you like later see in now our our other videos, I don't say it as much because uh unfortunately when you do something so much, you know, you the excitement's still there, but it's not like a brand you say, right? So I'm a little bit more of uh calm and collected, but uh once in a while I I will do it. Uh you know, and I and I got I've we've been on a couple of uh the hunting dog podcast uh uh episodes too, and he mentioned the same thing. He's like, Yeah, you you say let's go. What does that what does that even mean?
SPEAKER_00I love it. So yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so that was the beginning of it. And uh man, I'll tell you what, my brother never missed another day that that fall we went hunting um almost every time. I think at some point I was taking Tuesdays and Thursdays off from work, and we were hunting Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. And the reason why that that was the we were taking those days is because those those were the days that New Jersey would stalk Fassin and Quail. And um, we would go out there, man, and we hunted every almost every state game, man, uh, or wildlife management area for New Jersey from the north to the south, and we hunted quail, and we hunted uh fasten's all stock, but man, my brother never missed a day in the field after that, and we really kicked it off at that point.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that that is yeah, that's awesome.
SPEAKER_01I was in college then, uh, and we were online, so really uh I had a lot of time. Did you put the green screen behind you while you were hunting? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, no, we uh, you know, it was online. You go anywhere, you know, pull up your phone and you're in class, you know. But I I was hunting, so that's awesome. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well, testament to uh, and I know you've got more to talk about that, but testament to uh I I don't have the opportunity of living with my brothers. I still have my younger brother pastors in Maryland, and my older brother lives in Maryland as well, but he's uh he's a correctional officer in Maryland. And uh we grew up hunting, deer hunting together and having manned deer camp and stuff like that. But um it's uh I I miss those days of being able to, I mean, I have my wife and have my actually both of our boys now are in Charleston, South Carolina, not that far from us. They're in the Navy. Um, and um they are nuclear engineers in the Navy. And um, but they when they can, they come out with me. Um, I got my youngest his short hair from the guys out down in Florida, down in Miami. I got one off of them and and trained it for them and gave it to them. But like it it's something to be said, and I say this in almost everyone on my podcast, is is even though you're brothers, but in joining the outdoors together as a family, but especially passing it on to the next generation, right? Even though you're six years younger than your brother is, like you created that bond interfamily already with being brothers, but then something you guys can do together, but then will probably pass on to your kids. And Lord willing, continue to pass on generationally into that. And uh man, that's awesome. Because there's some, I mean, I've you know, I I don't want to talk bad of people whatsoever, but I've met some people that that can be very selfish and and they could go out hunting with family, but like they see it as like they're alone time, and I get it, but like they're like, no, like this is me. I like that this is my hobby, and it's like, man, you're missing out. Like, go take your son out hunting or fishing one time and let them catch a fish or let them shoot something for the first time. You'll probably love that experience of them shooting something more than yourself.
SPEAKER_00So, yeah, yeah. I would say the best part, my favorite part about hunting is the people. Yeah, you know, yeah. It's the people we spend the time hunting with. You know, the company is it's as much as I like being in the fields, also, you know, to get together afterwards and talking about what happened that day and and just, you know, um just living that all over again, you know, and nighttime the story of how that day was, you know, that's one of my favorite parts. Absolutely. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I would say that what makes upland hunting so amazing to us, um, it's a combination of the outdoors, the places we go. It the uh the outdoor, the upland hunting has taken us to places that uh we couldn't even imagine were, you know, so they're so beautiful, they're amazing. Yep. It's it's a combination of the places, the dogs, uh, you know, that we've hunted behind a lot of different breeds, um, and different types of dogs and different skilled uh uh dogs, some some more, some less. And um and and the last is the the people, you know, the places, the dogs and the people, right? I I can't tell you um how many times I've I've thought about um you know hunting somewhere and without my brother, it it's not the same. You know? Uh it's like those three things, I think the combination of those threes makes makes upland hunting amazing. And and it's you could say, oh well, you know, you could do that with any type of hunting. You could do that with duck hunting, you could do that with uh with deer and all that, but it you know, it's not because when you're upland hunting, you're walking, you're talking, you you're you know, you're kind of bonding in a way and telling stories, and then all of a sudden it's game on, your dog's on point, let's go, there's a bird. You know, and then you go up and you you you you watch the dogs work and you shoot the bird and you're uh retrieving all that, and it's kind of just this amazing combination. Whereas deer hunting, you're you might be hunting together, but you might be in a different stand, you're not talking, you're sitting, you know, and um yeah, like that's just uh and the same thing with I mean you guys know I'm a I'm a waterfowl guy, but more upland now.
SPEAKER_03But like waterfowl, yeah, you can get out and see some pretty cool places, but yet you're still sitting at the same place for three or four hours. Like you're not moving, whereas upland hunting, you're you're canvassing mountains or flat valleys, like you're you're going. And sometimes when you're out west, you can't help but to think how many people have have walked where I've walked, right? Like, how many people have seen this area of the world before?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, like there was this one point in our last video, one of our last videos we uploaded uh when we were chucker hunting. I got up on top of the rocks and I look around, I'm like, look at this place. You know? That's actually the thumbnail of the video. It's this it's a sh uh screenshot of where we were standing at that moment. And you just, you know, after a bird, uh uh, I guess it was after a retrieve or something, that's we just look up and you're like, wow, like this is where we're at. And we're four like well, 40 hours away from home, you know, more than a thousand miles away. Um, you know, and and it's like I said, it's a combination of the people, the dogs, and the places. Yeah, that's good. That's good.
SPEAKER_03Anything else? Um, Alberto, on on what got you into the upland life? I mean, from from, you know, or or a or Adrian, is there anything else? Like, like I obviously, yeah, you piggyback on what your brother said, but is there anything else like you guys can add to that?
SPEAKER_01I mean, honestly, like um the dogs, right? Like Lila, I I cannot uh tell how amazing of a first dog she was, or she is, you know, like um we hunted behind that dog uh on our first hunting season, pheasants. They're stock birds, but we hunted and we uh harvest like 70 pheasants over her around that in the first year, and uh like she was like a year old, you know? Uh and and it was just such an amazing um dog and and and that kind of like you know, because of her, now we have six dogs total, you know. Um and and she was just like more dogs and kids. Yeah, I know, right? Uh to me, like she's like the perfect dog. Uh, you know, and I'm not saying that she's the best dog uh that's ever walked the earth, but like to us, she's amazing. Like she she she has taken um you know uh she she she just kicked off all of our uplanding, up upland hunting. Um and now you should see her in in in Chucker Country, you know, or in grouse country. It's like she's at she's seven years old now, and she's at the prime of her hunting uh uh career, I would say, or life, and and and she's such a smart dog. Um, you know, I I can't talk uh, you know, I I can't say uh anything bad about her, other than she barks a lot whenever there's uh somebody around the house that she doesn't know. But everything else, I I I I love that dog. I wish that dog was mine. Uh you know, but yeah, no, she she has has been uh uh I guess a uh protagonist in us getting started in Upland hike.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's epic. And and the fact that you got her for $400 and paper snacking. That's that's insane. Like I I obviously we know, and you mentioned it, Alberto, right? Like that's not the way you'll go about things now, but like it you like you you just happen to be given by the grace of God a dog that that had that had it in her and and uh it opened this door of of life experiences to his creation, right? Like you get to like be able to experience God's creation in a whole different realm because of a $400 dog. Like, right, that's crazy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I mean it doesn't even you also look not we were talking earlier about testing and all of that. I mean, she has not only been a phenomenal hunting dog and all around, but I mean I if you're familiar with the next uh level of tests in uh in in NAFTA, there's the utility test, which is the following one, right? Yep. That's your broke gun dog uh test, you know, a little bit more than their gun dog tests that they have right now. But you know, there's a lot of there's a duck surge in it, you know, a lot more water, there's a remaining by blind and stuff like that, and then there is the field, your dog has got to be fully broke, retrieved to hand, all of that. Um she's gotten that on the rebelt with a maximum score. Um wow. And and then we went to the invitational, uh, which is their ultimate test. You know, we went to Ohio in 2023, where you have to run a brace, you have to move back or honor, um, you have to do a one-hour field brace. Um Then you got a hundred yard water blind retrieve. Um, and then you got an honor by the blind, and then you got a double mark retrieve, which for the lab world a lot of that is not that impressive, but for the versatile side of of things, it's extremely yeah, it's as good as it gets. And she went on to do that and she got a maximum score on her invitational test too. Wow. So yeah, she's she's been phenomenal. I mean, and then I ran her in a similar test to an organization called VHTF, uh, first uh hunting dog federation, similar, and I ran her at uh their a highest level PE, which is again another field brace, and and there's a search behind duck where we simulate a duck that gets wounded and swims away in the water, and your dog's gotta get on that same track on water, produce a duck. Um, then there is another independent duck search, and and then there's another uh 50-yard blind retrieve, and um she got that. That's a different test of score. She's got that 205 points or 204 points out of 210. It was, I mean, above and beyond what most dogs can ever get on that um that test. So, anyways, I mean, all that to say uh, you know, that like you said, it she was really a gift of God that, you know, got us into this, and and man, she's been so solid all around, you know.
SPEAKER_03Um yeah, it's so for you guys, it's basically correct me if I'm wrong, but it's kind of like first generation. Like you didn't you didn't come to the States with a you know family who had been in bird dogs and family who have grown up with it. Like you guys basically uh yeah, the the uh pellet gun shooting and stuff, which sounds epic, uh um in uh in Cuba, but like when you came here, it was basically somebody you you went out or you you s did did you go yeah, you went out pheasant hunting with somebody, right? Yeah, yeah. And then from that drive home is what is what started it. And so like you guys are got introduced by somebody else, of course, but like it's you're pretty much first generational, like taking this on. Yeah, man, that's awesome.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we've only really been hunting upland for like five or six years. Um since since COVID, really. That that, you know, so we've been to a lot of places, we've hit this hard. You know, we've we've kind of hit it up, and a lot of it is attributed to my brother. He, you know, when he kind of uh you know starts something, he he really dives deep into it and it's like full into the upland world. And um, you know, and and we you know, we kind of encourage one another when we go out west because the trips are so far, and they're you know, we've done 30-hour trips, 40-hour trips, and non-stop, non-stop. You know, we try to rotate driving and all that, and uh, you know, having that companionship and you know, to be able to knock out those trips. We we feel right now like we could go anywhere in the country um because of it. Um, you know, but yeah, a lot of it has to do with my brother really taking the, you know, when you say introducing first generation, you know, it's really been amped that has kind of kicked us off here in the upland world. Um, you know, so yeah, him and his dogs and then got me into it, and now I'm into it all the way. And you know.
SPEAKER_03Now now are your wives into it? Like do they go out with you guys?
SPEAKER_01No, no. Uh they come out sometimes and kind of trail us around and uh and they like the outdoors as well. But no, they're my wife is uh doesn't really like shotguns because it hurts her shoulder. Yeah. Yeah. Um but she comes around.
SPEAKER_00And mine doesn't like to do it because she can't hit the target that you know the clay birds, so she's like, I'm not doing this. So she loves dogs. Yeah, she loves everything about it.
unknownNice.
SPEAKER_03Nice. Yeah, my that I I get a joy with my wife being able to, I feel like at first I drug her into it with the waterfowl world um a little bit. And she's like, oh, okay. She she hates getting up early when she doesn't have to get up early. Like, and so that's why she loves deer hunting, but she's dick she likes to deer hunt at nighttime. Like she's like, nope, I'm I'm I'm not getting up early. I'm just I'm just not. So it's like, oh, okay. So then when it came to duck hunting, and it was like, hey, you know, we I duck hunt, you know, we met each other and said, Oh, that's fine. And she went out a couple times. She was like, Man, they gotta get up early to get get some of these things. And and so it it was she definitely loves the upland game because you don't gotta get up as early. Um, and we're outdoors people. So like she loves to go out there and and hike and get on, you know, put the vest on the back and get out there and put some miles on our legs. And we had we we did a podcast not too long ago, just her and I, and um just kind of what her her view of waterfowl, her view of upland in the hunting world. And she was honest with it all, and it which which um we talked about it. I was like, just be honest with it, you know, and um and she and she loves the waterfowl hunting for sure, but her biggest thing is is just being able to watch the dog. She was like, it, it, it, it, it baffles me that like you've taken our dogs, uh, you know, the the the labs and like in ocean water, and like when you watch all the birds go down, like you're like these dogs listening to you, and you can cast them back or left or diagonal. Then she's like, I still can't get how a dog can go someplace it's never been and smell a bird. Like it just it it it it it it baffles her. Like she's like, man, this is so crazy. So she loves having the camera or the GoPro on her head or even taking pictures. She loves shooting them as well. Like she she was a police officer, so she loves guns. But um, but um, I got her a 28 gauge uh that we do a lot of our quail and everything else with. When we go out west, I obviously I I give her a 20 gauge, but uh she loves her over and under 28 gauge. And um man, it's it's a joy to have her out there because I've only done one solo hunting upland trip and it was good in Nebraska, but um it I was kind of almost homesick to an extent because it was like, man, I miss having my hunting buddy with me, like like my wife with me. Like it was like, man, yeah, I had fun, but like how much like I could have had so much more fun having my wife there or or my boys, like well, you know, my boys go out there hunting with me. So um it is good to have have that extra person with you. But I figured I'd just ask if you're if you're uh if your wives get out there with you guys and and do stuff. Not I mean, if you know they don't, that's perfectly fine. And there's nothing wrong with that. But um it's uh we would like it too. Yeah, yeah. I would love it. It it it makes buying a dog and buying guns really easy when your wife is into it as well. Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then you your vacation, you can go and hunt together, you know. Don't have to be a good thing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. Long as long as I can find a little spa or someplace so she can go get nails done or hair done or something, or or go tanning or or something, I'm and I'm golden. I'm good. I'm I'm set.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, no, we're uh we would love it, you know. I mean and and she they do come like when it's uh local, you know, hunting the day and local pheasant hunting here and there, they'll walk behind and they enjoy it, you know. Yeah. Um, but uh to go out west and and all of that, uh that's a a big leap that I hope one day they can take. You know?
SPEAKER_03Well maybe maybe the kids will uh get into it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. Like you were mentioning about having uh passing it on to the next generation. Um that's something that like I I look so forward to, you know. Like my son, um uh he's three months old, and I know it's gonna be a while before um, you know, he's in that hunting age, but I pray that the Lord allows him to be able to hunt with us and that he enjoys it, you know. Uh that's something I'm so looking forward to being able to pass on.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it was it was uh the first duck I got to be with my son with was in Florida and uh my youngest. And um I didn't my my wife was with me, we were hunting in kayaks, uh three kayaks, ocean kayaks, and I had the lab, my American field lab with me. And um it was I mean, the teal almost took our head off from behind, and you hear and my wife said, What was that? And I was like, shh, like I knew what it was, but it was like, what was that? And they came flying over top of us, and um there was I think six in the group that came in, and my son saw my son shot twice. He had a scotch double on his first shot, dropped two, shot another one, and then my wife dropped the other three, and it was it was like I didn't even I didn't even think about picking up my gun. I was like, I was like watching it in slow motion, watching my wife and my son like hunting. I was like, if I never pick up a shotgun again in my life while I'm hunting with them, I am perfectly content with that. Like it, it like the joy the the the joy of watching them do it and then being able to send my dog and my dog retrieving all six of them. I was like, I could I could do this and never bring a shotgun with me ever again. Not of course I love to, but it was just like the joy of like that family bonding, just with even with my son, and watching him like, oh my goodness, like I'm hooked, like this is it. Like I like I am I I am I'm in this. It was it it was awesome, man.
SPEAKER_00It was so cool. That that you just painted a beautiful scene for us that that's amazing. Wow.
SPEAKER_03Well, thank you. Thank you. It was it's a memory that'll be ever etched in my mind, man. It will, it will uh, our oldest son was still out in Nevada. He met he had married a girl when I was out there pastoring, an amazing Christian girl. Couldn't have asked for a better soulmate for for my son. And he so he stayed out there. He was a French uh petisserie chef before he went to the military. He was he opened up, he went to school to be uh a French uh baker. And um he opened up his own coffee shop and French uh pâtisserie where he cooks like uh croissants and stuff like that. And um he stayed out there and our other son moved with us down to Florida. But um, yeah, man, it was it was a memory. I I I and then our our oldest that same year flew in and uh we got to take him and my youngest out duck hunting with us. And um, I remember that day like it was yesterday. I took out uh the Black Lab with us and uh we all got we got stuck and I didn't read the tides right. And um we got out there and it was great. We were only about a we weren't offshore, but we did go out in the golf and had a cut left in the golf to get to this point. And um I wasn't paying attention to tides. And by the time we got done uh hunting, we shot, I think, six or seven ducks that morning. And I shot one because there's only two, it was the only one I wanted to shoot. They were, I was letting them shoot them all. And um we had to drag, we had to drag, he didn't have waiters because he flew in from Nevada, so he didn't have anything. So my youngest and I had to drag the John boat uh with him in it, and the dog and the decoys across, I'm not even lying, some of the water was not even two inches deep. Like it was over two miles. Like we had to drag this John boat all the way back to the boat dock. It was, it was epic. And then we had a beautiful game board waiting on us there, and you know, obviously had to check all our tags, which was fine. But um, it was another great, great epic moment. We were we just plupped off some uh reeds on the back of the uh sand dunes and shoved them in the sand and took some paint buckets with his five-gallon paint buckets and just sat on top of them. And um, we just was put some about 15 decoys out there, put one motion decoy, and and uh man, it w it was phenomenal. Um the same thing. He got to shoot his first duck down in Florida. Um unfortunately it was a Merganser. I don't know if you guys know about ducks, but Merganzers are not good eating ducks. They're a big duck, but they are very fishy, very, very fishy. They're not good at all to eat. And uh, but uh well, I still live by the rule. You shoot it, you gotta eat it. So uh they definitely uh we cooked it up as best as we could and ate maybe a quarter of it and said, okay, we're done. Let's go buy some pizza. So uh and then they never shot another one of those systems are good. Yeah, I was like, now now pay attention, pay attention to what you're shooting now. They are legal, but don't shoot another one of those things because we're not, those are not good. Those are not good eat. But yeah. So uh, all right, well, hey, let's talk a little bit. Let's let's kind of maybe you know get towards the end of the show. We're almost encroaching on an hour here, and just kind of give us some things about your guys' YouTube show, like your your passion for it, your purpose for it. Did you guys just kind of stumble on it just from just from videoing your dogs, or did you really have a view like, hey, we're out here, why don't we start like videoing this? Like how how did the Upland Brothers YouTube channel kind of come to fruition?
SPEAKER_01You know, I can take it, I guess I can start it maybe on the starter. So uh I mean, really, uh it kind of started off with us um chat the recording the hunts just kind of for ourselves. Uh, but like we also watched a lot of YouTube videos online, you know. We saw some dog work and uh we we took a lot of inspiration and we still do from like YouTube channels like Eric Forrester. Yeah, oh dude, that guy is amazing. Yeah, I I would say he's the best upland hunting uh you know, YouTube channel on YouTube uh right now. Yeah. In my opinion. My personal opinion.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, I'm I'm a Patreon fan. I support him. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's great. Um, you know, and we we started recording our videos. Uh my brother got some GoPros, you know, and and we started putting it on our heads, and we started uh, you know, not really thinking anything about, you know, YouTube, but just kind of getting the hunts out, uh, recording our hunts, seeing the dogs work. And um, and then it really didn't take that much to put it up on YouTube afterwards, uh, you know, so we I started editing uh our our uh videos and um you know our first couple of videos are a little bit cringe, uh, you know, but that's you gotta start somewhere. Yeah, you do.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then I'm sure two years from now we're gonna think, wow, today's videos is cringe. Yeah. Um, but you know, um yeah, it was it was kind of like uh we'll get our we got GoPros, we'll record the videos, and and to us, like the pheasant hunting was amazing, right? Stockbirds, uh we didn't care um because you know, it was ever all everything we knew, and the only thing we knew. Um and uh yeah, we we were putting up YouTube videos like pheasant hunting in New Jersey, uh, or like whale hunting in New Jersey, amazing. And then we get the comments like, Why are you shooting a hen? You're not really allowed to do that, you know? Uh and then we had to explain it that, yeah, this is this is stock, stock birds, and so on. Uh but I I think you know, after that we we started going out west and then always started uploading uh those videos, the the wild bird hunting videos. But I'll tell you, like, I have no no shame in saying like stockbirds was it's amazing because it's the only opportunity that we had in New Jersey to to work our dogs and to hunt uh uplands. And I'm proud to say that's where we started. Um I recommend I would recommend everybody to try out wild bird hunting if they can, you know, if they can get out there. Uh, but I also recognize it's all it's very far for a lot of people. Uh so I I don't really like to bring down anybody that only do stock birds um because they they don't go out west and do the big trips. Like that's you know, whatever people can do, that it's important to just get out there in nature with your dog and enjoy it. Um but yeah, that's kind of where we we uh we kind of started our YouTube channel there and it's kind of grown from there. We we started slow and uploading here and there, but um the the subscribers just kind of kept coming slowly. It's never been like a uh in a great ambition for us in terms of like we really need to like do this to make money. It's been more of like uh kind of like something we enjoy. And if and every year we go out west, you know, we're gonna put our GoPros on um because we we watch those videos again, right? Like right now, I've watched a couple of our videos from the past couple of seasons, and we're like in anticipation of the next one to come, you know? Uh so we enjoy that. Uh, so that's a a big reason as to why we still do it. Um, but honestly, it it it records a memory, right? Uh for us, all of the our YouTube channels are memories, um, you know, that is recorded forever. There's a lot of great memories that we've had when we didn't have our GoPro, and it's not the same. They kind of get forgotten a little bit. Uh, but when we have those videos, um, we can go back to them whenever we want, and and that's an inspiration for that too. Where we're going from here, I don't know. Uh, I think we uh every season is a new opportunity, um, you know. Um, but I uh, you know, it right now we're not pursuing it at to the level of like, oh, let's do it, let's do it. You know, it's more of like a passive thing of we're going out west, we're gonna record. We're going to um Maine, we're gonna record, and we're gonna put it up up there for people to enjoy and for us as well to enjoy. Oh that's awesome. Yeah, that's good.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_01What about you there, buddy?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, what do you got into that? Um, I guess similar, I mean, I I'm say we had different stages um when it comes to the YouTube channel, right? I mean, we had the the beginning was like we we wanted to try to put something out there and see what kind of reaction we would get, and and then it was like let's let's really do this, and you know, let's really try and and try to do this a little bit better, and and um, you know, and that goes up and down, but I I think the reason why it does is because as much as we would like to make the best possible video, at the same time, we really are taken away by the moment. Um so we live in the moment, we throw the the GoPros uh on on our head or whatever the case may be. And you know, when when you're producing something, you really want to put your thoughts and implant your shots and things like that, we don't, we really plan the hunt. And there's a lot that we end up not recording sometimes because we're we're taken away by the moment. And so we prioritize the hunt and the experience that we get uh from from being there, and uh then we make the best that we can out of the footage that we recorded.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, but the footage is never the first goal for us, it's it's really the hunt. And, you know, like my brother said, uh, I mean, it's maybe we could have a bigger channel if we if we put more thought into it and and you know, post it more uh often and things like that. But at the same time, you know, this is our hobby and and we're not doing it for for the money that it produces or anything like that. So yeah, I mean, we struggle. We're trying to make better videos because of that. Um, but at the same time, we only have so much time where we we have to ourselves to go out there and enjoy the outdoors, and and if we're gonna spend it all thinking about how to make a video, then you start to kind of lose track of it, right? And or sense of it. And and and and that's really what happens with with our channel. I mean, we're we're gonna keep going. I mean, I would like to do more of it, you know, um, and and upload maybe even some training videos. You do a ton of training all all all summer long, and we do a lot of testing and things like that. And um, and so I thought we would like to incorporate more of that. Um, but you know, again, my brother's got a little baby. I got another baby. There's a lot of stuff going on where, you know, it's not priority number one, but it's something that we're definitely going to keep nurturing and and and keep up with that. And I think at some point it could pick up a lot a lot more and try to do it. at a much bigger scale, but you know, still it's not something I'm letting go and I'm just gonna slowly keep keep with um doing one here and one there. At some point I'll like to do it a little bit better anyways.
SPEAKER_01And and and to add to that, like we we've thought about like, hey, why don't we get somebody to uh record while we're uh out there hunting uh not just the gold clubs but just somebody with an actual camera behind us. We thought about that I you know I feel like that's something that we would like to do. We we haven't pursued it but that would be our next step because we we are so into the moment um that it's hard for us to be thinking about like hey this is a great shot we should be recording this right now you know and and like the experience that we have out west hunting it it's uh not even compared to like what the video actually comes out to like I would say the video only captures like maybe 40% of like the experience you know uh that we're actually having like we it's a lot much it's way better out there than the video shows yeah but we just can't like he said the more you focus on recording of the video the more it takes away from from the actual experience yeah um and we've even talked about it's like hey look why don't you go hunt and I I'll stay back in record you and then uh I'll we'll do the same after the next walk.
SPEAKER_03We'll switch around but it never happens because we're both so excited to go hunting you know yeah so and I I mean it it's your guys a show it's it's nothing I mean I'm just a a very avid uh subscriber and and and I watch it and then um have it it it would what you guys have going for you as the Upland brothers right if it was like one recording while the other one hunts it's kind of like no like you guys do it so good together. Like don't don't don't split that up like I want to see you both shooting in one miss or whatever like like the togetherness of it is is what is what makes like it's it's it's it's what you guys do and you guys do it great. And I I also like to like there there's and this is no way shape or form trying to minimize or degrade or talk bad about the hunting shows that are out there but like if you start watching enough hunting shows, professional hunting shows and and and it's almost like you're watching like you're binge watching um like uh TV episodes of something like you can almost predict what's gonna happen or they got like the cut and give you you know Purina Pro Plan you know like like advertisement stuff or like you can almost feel the stage it almost feels like it's been staged right like like like you're like you like you're not actually hunting and you do not get that at all what you guys are doing because like you said you guys put the hunt first not the production first. And that is not to minimize your guys's production like you guys do a great job at it you guys do some you guys got in and do some some b-roll and everything into it which has been awesome to see the progression of it but like still you catch the essence of this is you're coming on a journey with us as we're as we're hunting like we like we're gonna show you it but like the hunt is is what we do. Like we're gonna hunt and and and we're gonna show you some of what we like of it. I can't show you it all because it'd be hours upon hours but like it's real like the one thing I I always tell people hey if you haven't seen these guys go go go watch your show or go watch your YouTube channel. I'm always um promoting you guys to people because I it it's it's real uh there's enough of that that kind of staged feel like it's staged shows out there on TV but also on YouTube that it's kind of like man this gets boring um where it's like watching you guys you two out there as brothers with your dogs congratulating each other talking after you shot like hey road you get that hey man like the camaraderie it's just because obviously you guys are blood but like it it's I feel like I'm right there with you like watching you guys hunt. And I don't know if that's what you guys went about to do if that was like a goal of it or that just came as a result of your YouTube channel. But like I wouldn't change that at all. Like the realness of what you guys do is is amazing.
SPEAKER_01Well we we certainly appreciate it's an it's an encouragement to hear that feedback um you know and uh because a lot of times you know we can get caught up in like how we gotta edit because editing is a chore like I we love the hunting and all that but editing is such a chore um you know and and hearing you and you know the those that feedback it's it's an encouragement to you know continue doing this and and and getting out you know the editing out of the way and and putting it out there for you guys to see.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So yeah no I we appreciated. I I don't think I've thought about it like that. We um and I and that's a good you know I'm glad that you mentioned it.
SPEAKER_03I I was thinking a lot more of like hey we gotta we gotta get a little bit more like those guys you know yeah um but the you know you make a good point this this is this is what we're doing we're hunting and come along with us you know and it you know we're not trying to tell like a bigger bigger bigger story uh you know we're just trying to tell you hey this is where this is where we are hunting this is great uh you know it it it keeps you on the it it does it really keeps you on and I'm gonna say this for the listeners like I'm not I'm not paid to say this these guys aren't sponsor me like it's not this is this genuine um brothers of Christ talking and being real and being honest like it it the the realness of what you guys do it keeps keeps us on the edge of the seat because it it's just hey let's go out hunting and let's go take our GoPros and and obviously you guys do great on production and your your skills of editing are are are great and I know I mean I say that and I know they're only gonna get better but they're already great like like it's amazing. But like it the way that you you set the adventure off and the way that you record it and set the dogs out and it it's never once do I feel like watching your guys' show man like why like you guys did did did you stage that like and I know you didn't plant that bird but like how much editing did you do to kind of get these things to match up to where like I feel like that was kind of almost on the fake side of it. Like never once ever do I get that it's it's always like oh my gosh oh man man they're gonna crest this hill and and that dog's gonna be on point or like oh like I feel like I'm walking with my dogs with you on your hunt. And that is that is so awesome that you guys are able to catch that.
SPEAKER_01So I got a question for you. Go ahead what's what's your favorite video that we have out there?
SPEAKER_03You guys so there is one that you guys did um I think I think it was a Maine Woodcock. The Grouse Woodcock yeah the Grousen Woodcock and then you guys I don't know if it's a newer one or whatever but you guys did like a mashup or something um besides you did like I remember it was a mashup but like some of your did you just recently do one of like the of your favorite hunts or like a I don't know if that was maybe that was Eric Foster on top of that yeah he did like he did one of that one but then there was um I tell you it wasn't even a hunt it wasn't even a hunt. When you were you I think it was right after the hunting season or right before the hunting season you guys took your dogs out and did training and I think you had you also had somebody there with you and you had a drone and you were placing birds and and and couple and and the reason why because like it it people don't show this guys on their and guys meaning YouTube they they don't show this on on their hunting training videos. Like one of the birds didn't flush right and you had or two of them and you had to like kick it up and then like one of them ended up going into like the woods line and you're like ah like I don't want to send my dog and like it it it it was it wasn't a perfect training session with the birds. The dogs did fine you were actually like the dog's probably going to break in this and that and the and I forget which one it was but it didn't whatsoever. Like I was like that was perfect. But the burb scenario wasn't that great. And it was like man finally somebody like I I just had that same training session two weeks ago like with with my birds. Like man like these guys are real like they showed that bird and it and and and it and it flew in or it didn't go the direction it was supposed to go and like ah and and you didn't edit that out like you just kept rolling with it. That was awesome. Leo yeah that's kind of that's one of the only ones of the training videos we've done we talked about wanting to do more we haven't but yeah I kind of like the the scenario with the drone it gives a different perspective and um yeah no definitely that listen you guys inspired me with also a slash a little bit of Eric Foster as well if you're gonna listen to this which I don't know if he does at all but like I went and bought a a drone um and I use it when I go guiding now. I do a lot of it with the training with my dogs because I do a lot of training down here and and I've been getting it's not to get my name out there. I don't I mean obviously I charge to train but like I just love dogs. Like I love the challenge of having another dog figuring out that dog and then knowing I'm gonna send this dog home and it says dad and two sons or dad and a daughter and this dog is going to create so many memories for this family. And I just got to be a small piece of this puzzle. Like that to me puts a smile on my face and you know I I always try to talk Christ with all of my uh clients as well. So it it it it opens up a door to that you know as well. But um it it uh it I I went and was like you know I'm gonna get a drone so that way not that I'm trying to go professional with training videos or anything like that but like I was like you know what I'm gonna get me one I'm gonna try this thing and it was very annoying at first I'm not gonna lie like I was like trying to run my dog collars and also the drone and making sure that I had my GoPro on my head I was like man this stuff's for the birds man I I don't like I don't know if I'm cut out for this um but it eventually came around and it it really helped out on the guiding aspect of things. I like to video it just in case somebody's like hey man I'm you know that's my first hunt with my son or my daughter or me and my brother we haven't seen each other in five years but I booked this hunt and we're gonna go hunting and um and and I always ask him is it cool if I GoPro and give me your guys' email and I'll send you the video of your guys's hunt. Like you know I don't you don't got to pay me for it just you know here and you're and you know send it. And so I've started using the the drone on follow mode um and and allowing it to follow us as I'm guiding them. And it was like man this is pretty this is pretty I mean that was easy to do but it was like man this is pretty cool. And so thank you for that because you know it it gave me a little bit of courage of myself to be like all right I'm gonna go do this drone thing a little bit because uh I I'm I'm tech savvy is I'm semi-tech savvy but not when it comes so much to like drones and like epic camera work and stuff like that. Like that's not my forte.
SPEAKER_00Yeah I I mean you touched on something and and earlier you know you said about the struggle of running the dogs and the drone and everything coming together. I mean that's exactly what we were talking about earlier, right? I mean if you were hunting with us and you were out west with us and you saw us recording the hunt and stuff like that very seldom what we do takes away from our for what from what we're doing in the day in the hunt like you know like we have friends that have come out with us and it doesn't take us like 50 minutes, you know, or half an hour to get ready out of the truck to go out into the field because we gotta get all this camera stuff. You know it's very simplistic it it's it's we're ready to go quick you know and we try to keep it simple because at the end of the day you know it is not our prior it's not priority number one to record it. Priority number one is to enjoy the hunt and enjoy the dogs and the company. Yep. And whatever we can make out of that you know the best that we can make out of it then that's priority number two. So yeah I mean it is a struggle um but once you figure out a system and you know you s figure out what works for you you know it it it goes it goes much quicker. So yeah.
SPEAKER_03Man that's awesome. That's cool. I love I love the uh the purpose of it the passion it's kind of I mean that's what I wrote down on on my notes for and and uh I love it that it's the hunt first like whatever I can do whatever we can do to keep it about hey we're hey hey bro remember we're out here hunting let's enjoy a dogs let's enjoy each other let's enjoy our friend to be brought around you know with this is time let this is what it's about like let's never lose sight of that yeah we're gonna have GoPros on us but like let's let's if if I forgot I'm not gonna be so mad and upset if I forgot to click the GoPro on because at the end of the day it's not about it's not so much about the YouTube channel although we want it to be well but I I rather live in that moment with my brother hunting or our friends out with us hunting and watching the dogs than if I had a choice than to make or to make sure that I was recording it and miss some of that stuff. Now give me the first one instead of the second one all day long.
SPEAKER_00Yeah yep yeah that's that's us right there in a nutshell yes our videos could be much better in in many different ways and like you said earlier you know there and you mentioned that and it's interesting because it's I mean it's the truth we don't ever like have planned shots of like you picking up the bird like you know the bird is on the ground and you go and you set the camera next to it and and you go and pick up the bird or or like you know things like that like we we we don't really try to do those things all that much. When we're it what whatever happens in the hunt that we see you see. You know and and like you said I guess that's why I bring such such a you know brings you into the moment and we could do much better. I mean uh we talked about him a bunch here but a person that does an excellent excellent job for doing that is it's Eric Forster. His storytelling is amazing yeah uh he's got a great personality he's got awesome dogs and you know it not only does is he a heck of a hunter but also he knows how to find birds how to get to the right spots and and then he's got dogs that you know that have the noses and and the search in him that they're gonna get out there and and um and find the birds if they're there you know but he he starts with the with the right location first right that's our job and he's really good at doing that. Yeah I really enjoy watching him um you know it's it's it's just an awesome experience and like you said brings you into the moment of what's going on he does a very good job at storytelling during the moment and after the fact and you know I think that's why he's so successful at what he does. And you know meanwhile for us we're gonna we're gonna keep moving forward with this um you know with I'm not gonna say how little but with the amount of work that we have put into the channel we have received a great response um from from everybody you know obviously like just like you and um it's very encouraging you know it's very encouraging not to let go of that and you know just just keep on working on it. I mean our channel could be much bigger to success is not built overnight you know sure okay we have a lot of stuff going on right now um but a couple of years from now you know we could be uh at a in a different place and and more into it you know if you look I'm gonna talk about him again but if you look into our forester he's been posting videos for like 11 years. Yeah yep so you know what I mean so it's about the consistency we at the moment we don't have the opportunity to be out west nearly as much as we would like to uh but we try to make the most out of it and whatever we can get and we can share with you guys we will and um that's it's all about we definitely I I know I can speak on behalf of all your subscribers man we definitely appreciate it for sure definitely appreciate it definitely do.
SPEAKER_03Well hey let me uh I didn't tell you guys about these two questions hope uh hope you hop hope you guys are uh okay with having two off the wall simple questions thrown at you yeah okay they're not embarrassing I promise but I like to kind of finish up this way um with my podcast what is and you can't piggyback off each other unless it's the truth and like unless you're like yeah I like that as well what is your favorite food like if you had one one one food or one dish that you could eat for the rest of your life that would be your favorite what would that be I know what his favorite would be steak steak he's a meat eater all he wants to eat is is meat.
SPEAKER_01Meat eater stole my name uh so my favorite I and it's I don't know if uh everybody will notice but it's like actually a Cuban dish um you know and it's a ros congrise um with uh pernil or ropa vieja so basically what it is is uh it's rice uh but it's not like the white rice it's more of like a a uh I guess grayish rice um and uh with uh pernil it's like it's pork right it's like the pork shoulder okay kind of like done in the in the oven you're nice and crispy um and and soft uh that or beef with basically done in like where you shred it in in not as like uh ground beef but more like pulled yeah into small yeah yeah like pooled beef yeah yeah and uh it and it's kind of uh juicy in a way the way my dad makes it uh and then you add a little bit of um plantains in there like oh man come on now I love plantains yeah those are good good stuff um so yeah I got that's kind of my my favorite um what what's yours besides steak you can't just say steak well I mean um I've I think my favorite has evolved over the years um I I was very much there what my brother's talking about with a lot of uh um that like my food that my mom would make that I really liked yeah but over the years I mean I've I've become a fan of um um charcoal barbecue steak there's a steak can be steak it is charcoal barbecue on the charcoal yeah can be don't don't give me like a steak made on a gas stove I mean okay like you gotta have the charcoal in there a little bit of hint from the smoke very simplistic I just put salt on the steak I don't you know I don't go crazy on seasonings or anything like that just the right amount of salt with a little bit of fat on that steak you know could what what's your you can only get one cut of steak for the rest of your life what's that cut of steak gonna be um so the there is um if I if if because it's you know the one that I really like it's a little bit on the expensive side so I don't get that all the time but I if you could though if you could that's fine.
SPEAKER_00If if I could um so it would be the uh there's there's some there's a cut in Spanish um it's called Palomilla um and it's yeah and it's it's a it's a mixture um gosh um the cut I don't I don't really know what the it's not a specific cutting in in in the English side okay it's it's um it's it's it involves two two uh cuts typically uh and one of them it's it's a little bit more more known um and then the other one it's it's it's just kind of what's next to it. Um is it fatty so and uh yeah a little bit of that so I I apologize on on on the name on the name you're fine well I mean you gave a Spanish name we can look it up it's a very yeah it's a very Spanish name but I I mean I really really like the mixture the mixture of it. You can tell Really Hispanic, don't you?
SPEAKER_03Hey, well, hey, let me ask. So my boys out of Miami, every time I go see them, um, and they're Cuban. What's up with eating cold hot dogs? Y'all eat cold hot dogs? See? What I can talk about. Cold hot dogs. He's like, here, Pastor, come on, Pastor, have some have some lunch. And I I I got it, and they're eating it without a bun. And I'm like, well, I okay, I'll eat it without a bun. And I grabbed it and I was like, uh, maybe this has just been sitting on the table for a little bit. And I I ate it, and I'm like, this thing, did y'all cook this? And they're like, no, we didn't cook it. I'm like, that's this guy. It's like, bro, you know, you don't, we don't cook. And like every single time I'm around, they've always got a pack of hot dogs and they're cold and they're just eating them.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, what in the world? So we have a buddy uh named Bobby, and he hunts with us quite often. And uh he one time I offered him hot dogs, and it was called hot dogs. They were one of the hunting trips, you know? It's a nice lunch tri uh uh lunch uh meal there with a bunch dog on a bun, and it's it's delicious with a little bit of mustard and ketchup. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, I I mean at least put mine on a hot stone in the sun a little bit or something. I I don't know, man. I I I can't get down with the cold hot dog thing. I've I've already I've already told him, all right guys, stop. I I'm not I'm not uh stop offering me cold hot dogs. You know, I don't I don't care if that's a you know if that's a curse to you in your in in in in your country, but I can't do no more cold hot dogs. I'm done.
SPEAKER_00That's not everybody ate their hot dogs. You know, I'm not that big of a fan of the cold dog. That's a lot on my brother's side.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man.
SPEAKER_01It it's funny because it's an it's somewhat of a joke between us and Bobby. Like literally, like we talk about the hot dogs all the time. I offered a cold hot dogs, and he looked at me like I had two heads.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they didn't tell me. So my my first introduction was not even being told it was cold, it was just they just I've I was thinking I'm eating a hot dog and it was not. And I was like, what'd you guys just give me? Like what is wrong with you? Like what in the world?
SPEAKER_00So that's funny. I owe you, I owe you the answer to the to the state. There's a um Palomilla has a part of it that's also pican.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, picanha. Yeah, dude, it's my uh I have a lot of Spanish friends. My buddy from Guatemala introduced me to picanha, and that's all we cook. All all the well, he was like, hey, it was actually in Florida, and uh we built a we dug a hole underground in the backyard and made a fire, and he took a stick and whittled it and shoved the picanna on there, or like folded it like two or three times, put a little salt and pepper on it, and stuck it on the side of the hole and cooked it for like, I don't know, 40 minutes or something, and took it off. And I was like, where has this been all my life? Like, this is good.
SPEAKER_00Man, it it's amazing.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_00It was so it's my favorite bar.
SPEAKER_03All right. Last one, and I don't maybe this is a cultural thing too, but I I don't know, but uh, y'all eat ice cream?
SPEAKER_01Um, I mean a little bit, but it's not like we like like have it for dessert.
SPEAKER_03So okay, so I'll I'll switch it. Maybe not flavor ice cream flavor, but what's your favorite dessert? If you could only have one dessert for the rest of your life, over and over again, what would that dessert be? This might be the same one, but I'll I'll let you go first. Alberto, if you say steak, I'm gonna slap you through the phone.
SPEAKER_00I I swear, um, I mean, I'm I'm really not big into the sweets. Um, you know, actually, somebody asked me the exact same question at work today um because I found out my birthday is in a in a few days. Um and yeah, I don't have an answer for them. Um I mean I like ice cream. Like uh I really, really like Carvel mango ice cream with chocolate chips on top. Okay. Okay. Phenomenal. Uh I mean, I mean, it's it's kind of there on the dessert side, but I love take I love eating that. Yeah, it I really like that. Very specific. Uh, we go to specific Carvel where they they make the ice cream right there. Yeah. Mango is my my favorite flavor and um by far, and then with some chocolate chips on top, and it's money. There you go. Okay. Yeah. Adrian, what's the one? I like flan.
SPEAKER_03Flun.
SPEAKER_01Flan. Okay. Yeah, flan's good. Yeah, I love flan. I I I can tell you I I would eat a lot of it because it's very sweet. Yeah, you just have to have a little piece, and otherwise you'll start to, you know, get uh, I guess too sugary. But uh no, flan is great. I I love flan.
SPEAKER_03Flan is good. Yeah, I'm not I'm not a super sweet, sweet uh sweet eater myself. I've never been, but uh not that you guys asked, but I always throw my two cents on there when it comes to uh favorite foods. Uh I'm I'm part Asian, part Japanese. Uh people don't know that people don't uh know that about, but my my grandmother is is uh full-blooded Japanese. And so I I was that weird kid in school that showed up with a lunchbox with like sushi and seaweed and white rice uh for lunch.
SPEAKER_00But uh my wife was born and raised in Japan. Nice. She's 25% Japanese for the grandfather was full Japanese. That was all me right from that's a point twist to it. I've been to Japan, I know exactly where you're talking.
SPEAKER_03Yep, yep. But mine is, dude, I can throw down a hot wings. If I could have hot wings for the rest of my life, Buffalo hot wings, I'm telling you, I I could and I'm a hot wing eating machine. Like, man, I love me really spicy food, but a really good tasting spicy hot wing. Man, I'm hot.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I love him. My brother's gotta show you the technique to eat hot wings. I don't know if he remembers that, but there's a guy who once came to work and showed him how to do that.
SPEAKER_03Is it with the drum or is it with the one that got the two has the two bones in it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the one with the two bones works too. Um, but there's a way where you can like pop the whole meat off the bone really easily. You just basically like just press it, like you you you press it up against something, and it it like basically pops right out. Uh it's it's really good uh technique.
SPEAKER_03I like I like getting done and having hot sauce all in the corners of my face on my no on my tip of my nose. You know, like it's uh I call them flavor savers for the for like an hour later, you just lick the corner of your mouth and you get a retaste of all the hot sauce.
SPEAKER_00So I got a question for you. Yeah, go ahead. What is your favorite game bird that you had? And and may not be like your consistently favorite game bird to have, but like maybe one that you had one time that it was like that was amazing. I will never forget that. Game so Upland or Warfat or both? We're I'm gonna go with the Upland side. Okay, Upland side. Okay, you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So Upland side, the favorite. Um I had a chucker made for me with a cherry compote. Um, so it was like a roasted uh, it was it was really the guy made it almost like it was like fine wine and dine type of restaurant, and we were out hunting, and I was like, what how did you where'd you cook this at? Like we're on the Miller Mountains, but like um a chucker that um it was, I guess, it wasn't really a slow roaster. I mean, he he he wrapped it inside of like tin foil and just kind of threw it like he would like a potato and like a fire, but like there was a little bit of like sage inside of there, and I think brown sugar. And the way that it roasted, it was like I I don't know, it was and that he left his skin on, and so the skin got it like after he took it out, he kept it on out there so the skin got a little bit crispy on it. And then he made like a cherry compote, which was like a it was and I don't like cherries. Like I'm I'm not a I I love fruit, but cherry is not a fruit that I typically gravitate towards at all. But like the compote was like sweet and bitter and sour at the same time, and he like drizzled it over the top of it. Dude, it was it was it was amazing. It was it was phenomenal. Wow, like it was it was so good. Chucker. Um I've had my i if I had to, I mean, I I hear grouse. So this year, like I told you guys, I'm going up to the upper peninsula, my my wife and I to do grouse and woodcock hunting up there. Um I hear grouse is pretty good. So I'm looking forward to that. Um, but right now, chucker, the way that that was made, um tops my list.
SPEAKER_01I tell you, my my favorite tasting bird is um uh bluegrouse. Blue grouse. That's my favorite. Yeah. Um early season bluegrass. I've never tried lay season. They say that lay season they start to taste a little bit more like piney, because I guess they uh the food source that they start eating is more on the like a lot of pine um buds or something like that. But uh yeah, early season uh dusky grouse was amazing, amazing. Uh it just simply just cooked over on a skillet, you know, a pan. Yep. Uh that was that was great. Y'all like y'all like eating pheasant? Pheasants? Yeah. There's uh there's uh a really nice dish that my um my brother's wife um makes with pheasants, uh, that's like all cooked up with like uh um I guess it potatoes or something like that. I I don't know. But yes, it's delicious that way. But uh pheasants, like I feel like if you just put it on a skillet, uh it's the it's too uh fibery, the meat's too fibery. Yeah. So it's kind of hard to relax. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I tell you, one one, I mean, and pheasants okay, like we've had them to Thanksgiving and stuff, and they're all, I mean, it's fine, but like if you sat down and killed a good mess of pheasants and you like pheasants stink. I think they're the stinkiest Upland bird to me. I mean, it they like I I don't know. I just that they stink. Um and like if if somebody's cooking a pheasant for me and I don't had to shoot it and then you know dress it out and like 15, 20 of them, like after I do that, I'm like, I don't I'm good. I'll cook dinner for y'all, but I don't I'm not gonna eat tonight. Like I'll You gotta try Woodcock. Is it good?
SPEAKER_00Woodcock's great. Well uh it's great, but it's very um it's more like liver, it's darker meat. Um, so you're gonna see the difference for the white meat. Um, the significant, you know, it's a significant difference. Not everybody likes it. I like them, you know, but it's gonna be different than probably any other game bird you had in terms of dark meat and white game birds. I'm talking about upland.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00It's probably similar to the sharp tail grouse. Yeah, no, see, I like sharp.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I like sharpies. Yeah, sharpies are good. I uh I was able to kill some out there early season this past year in and well, this past upland season in the sand hills when I was by myself and shot some Huns and shot some Sharpies. Um it took a it took a day and a half for my dogs to to understand that style of hunting and to, I guess, find the birds and me too. Like I was a virgin at it. Like I've I've never been out there to to hunt them. So um it took us a little bit, about a day, day and a half, but like my dogs were treating them like they were quail. And so they were they were pointing them and creep and they were like, I I don't know if they were moving on them or whatever, but like by the time I got to them, um the dogs had bumped them a couple times at first, thinking they could get closer to them. And like the next day, it was like night and day. Like my dogs were like, no, I'm pointing them from like 40 yards away, 50 yards away. And like it was it was awesome. Like it was game on after that. But uh yeah, I I shot, I shot a good amount and it was it was good, man. It was is I I like Sharpie. So if Woodcot is similar to that, uh yeah, that sounds good. I'll give you a tip.
SPEAKER_00Um my favorite game bird that I've ever had, and I'm talking like consistently, but that one time that was cooked, man, I could have I could have had a five-gallon fourth divinator. I mean, I could have had a ton of it. We shot 12 shark tails last year. It was four of us. Um, and at the end of the day, a friend of mine, Jim from here from PA, he picked up some taco seasoning. Very simple. Pick up, pick yourself up some taco seasoning. Yeah. And just, you know, cut them in strips, the shark tail breasts, cut them in strips, you know, dip them in the citizen, get them all nice and um, you know, full of it, and and then drip them on a hat oil pan, uh, and just kind of let them cook quick. You can't be in there for too too long. Yeah. Just in and out. And that was probably the most watery taste, like soft, like it just it was kind of like butter, like in my mouth. It all like it was such a great taste, but it was juicy, and then and then it was really soft to eat, and I mean, it was phenomenal. We ate all of them. We thought we were gonna, you know, just get to like six of them. We just kept making more, and then the plates would get empty, and we just kept making more. And they're meaty, they have a ton of meat. Yeah, yeah. Um, and we ate 12 birds that day. Wow. That's how good it was. And very simple, and like, you know. Yeah. Taco. That's easy. Yeah, very simple.
SPEAKER_03Now, I I will have to say, I mean, my upland game is beyond my waterfowl game now. Like, I still go out doing some waterfowl hunting, but upland is is is what is what we do most. But but out of all the uh upland slash migratory, because some of the upland birds are migratory birds, obviously, I gotta say, teal is the best tasting bird in the world. The duck, teal.
SPEAKER_01Teal, yeah, I've heard that.
SPEAKER_03Teal is teal. Like, if like it, it would, I mean, I I love I love that chucker, love all that, but like if somebody said, Hold a gun to my head, oh, you only get eat one bird the rest of your life, I'd be like, give me a teal. Give me a give give me a teal. A blue wing or red wing teal, it don't matter. Like, man, those things are so good. Uh, so good.
SPEAKER_00And your son is gonna say I'm Morganson, is that how you say?
SPEAKER_03So yeah, no bird games are yeah, no, yeah. Yeah, if he shoots another one of them, it's uh I'm I'm I'm I'm gonna get him fired for the military or something if he if he shoots one of those again. But yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's awesome.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, man. Well, listen, boys, um, we'll get you to stay on the phone and and and I'll talk to you after we get done here. But uh anything else or or you know you guys want to say or or or or chat about or or or be good?
SPEAKER_00Appreciate the invitation um a ton. I mean, for the record, we have never talked before. So just you know, this is this is just to show that um how much of of the same desire and and and and the same emotions and and the same way of living we share and and the experiences and we have the ability to have this talk, and it's like we've known each other for a long time. And you know, yeah, this is this is it's been amazing. I I appreciate the invitation, big time. It's you know, I've had a great time. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and for me, yeah, like he said, thank you very much. Um it's been great speaking with you, and and actually it's even more of an encouragement that you not only um you know carry the upland uh uh uh lifestyle, but you you also carry uh the name uh you know Christ, right? You you uh you uplift Christ and you share your testimony and and you put that in everything that you do, and that's an encouragement to us. Um, you know, I think we're called to um to be the the salt of the earth, right? And how can we do that if we hide, you know, or um and we are called to to proclaim God's kingdom, um, you know, and and through this avenue, um, you know, where we get to uh speak to other people, you know, uh we would be remiss to uh not mention that, to not carry uh the name of Christ in everything that we do, right? Uh so we we certainly appreciate being on the podcast, but also we appreciate uh you know the being able to speak about um you know the Lord uh Christ as well here. And uh yeah, if you haven't accepted Christ in your heart, this is a you know, it's it's you definitely should. Uh there is uh there's only one way to heaven, and that is the Lord Jesus. And uh He's the one who created all this uh amazing birds and dogs and wildlife and uh places, you know, so we're we're just very grateful for the opportunity to share our our faith as well.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's uh it's I I I I live by this and I tell my boys this, and I'm gonna be a grandfather here, and I'm still young, uh, coming up shortly. And uh I tell my boys, whatever platform God gives you, you better use it for him. Because if not, you're gonna have to answer for Christ for that one day. Whatever platform that is, you stand on that platform with his name and you use it for his glory. And um, and that's exactly what I started this podcast, and every podcast is, like I say, it's unapologetically Christ forward. You know, we don't talk about, you know, we don't, I don't, you know, I try to tell the people if I, you know, I've there's been people on the show that aren't Christians, but I say, listen, you know, um, I talked to them about Christ before the show, and then I and I say, listen, you know, what will would you please refrain from um, you know, some of the you know words or talking things that you may typically use on a daily basis? I can't tell you what to say, but would you just be mindful of that as well? And um, I've had some great, great conversations with people through this avenue. But um, yeah, absolutely. And it was John 14, 6 when Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father but by me. That's an exclusive claim. That's not subjective, that's objective. Either Jesus is the only way or he's not the only way. And uh, we believe he is the only way to heaven. So, amendment. All right, boys. Well, I definitely appreciate you. This is Cleve Outdoors. God bless.
