Welcome back H8ters. Your latest and greatest and hopefully your favoritest wrestling podcast in the land are back with a match of the week brought to you by Billiam. We're talking a Tables, Ladders & Chairs match for the WWF Tag Team Championships between The Dudley Boyz, Edge & Christian and The Hardy Boyz.

SPEAKER_02

What's going on, y'all? We are here. We are back. We are ready to get into it. Who are we? Well, none other than your latest and greatest, and hopefully your favorites, wrestling podcast in the entire land. It's the section eight wrestling podcast. I am Kills At Wheels.

SPEAKER_00

I am Billy. And kids, we are here for yet again another match of the week, WrestleMania Edition. Because we are merely about a week and a half away from the granddaddy of them all, the show of shows, WrestleMania. So with that being said, uh you're gonna sense a theme with me. Obviously, my favorite match is the ladder match. And we already discussed one of my favorite tag teams is the Hardy, so we're gonna see them a lot in these match of the weeks. With that being said, you always hear about uh they always say, Oh, the greatest tag team ladder match of all time is TLC2 from WrestleMania 17. I disagree. And we're here to talk about why. So we're here to talk about the triangle ladder match between the Hardee's the Deadlies and Edge and Christian. Now these are three of probably the greatest tag teams of all time. Facts. Facts. Um, all three of them are brother teams. One of them is actually a pair of brothers. Facts. Um so this was the first time that we saw multiple teams in a ladder match ever. So No Mercy 99, I believe was October what about six months before that, and that was the first time we'd ever seen a ladder match involving more than two people, uh, being the Hardys and Edge and Christian, they were fighting for like a million dollars and like some manager, I forget whose management uh services. Anyway, so they put on a clinic next time on Raw. They had they came out and received their flowers from the crowd, they shook hands, and it's like they did something that nobody had ever seen before. So, six months later, throw the Dudleys in the mix, and we're gonna do it again, but this time make it a triple-threat match. We saw things we had never seen before, ever. Hardy's come out, they come out, Jeff does his little thing where he slides under the ladder. Yes. So that's that's very Jeff Hardy, uh, because he defies all odds. Uh the match gets started. So the Dudleys come in as the champions.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And before the Dudleys even make their way, they do their little pose on the top of the ladder in the aisleway, and then the edge, edge and creation and the hardies just start going forward in the match. Match begins. There's a lot that happens. What do you think about this match, Kills? Let me hear your thoughts about it.

SPEAKER_02

So I watched this match, and then I immediately watched TLC too because I figured I should watch them both to compare, and I think you're absolutely right. I think that this first TLC is it's not a matter of it being infinitely better. What I think happened was I think two things. One, I like it better because it's just the three teams.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you. That was my biggest cry. Not quite, but that was my biggest thing about it.

SPEAKER_02

When you get into the second one, you get other people involved. Like Rhino plays a huge part in that song.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Uh Christian is on Rhino's shoulders as they climb the ladder. But yeah, so they all have their thirds. So Rhino is with Edge and Christian, the Ludleys had Spike Dudley, and the Hardy's had Lita. So they all had their moment. Jeff does big move where he takes out two of the guys that aren't even in the match. It's just whatever. Like they were big moments. The spear from the top of the ladder. Like, that's still talked about. It's one of the greatest moments of all time. But besides that, match overall, not the best.

SPEAKER_02

That was gonna be my second thing, is because you had so many great things that no one had seen before in that first one. Now that second one forces you to do bigger, bigger spots, really, right? So you're really just leading up to those bigger spots. So you have the big spear, which is again is one of the most replayed wrestling highlights of all time. Um, and then you have the big tipping over and the and Matt and Bubba Christian or uh yeah, Christian and um I think it's Bubba, I'm not sure. Somebody's getting pushed over and they fall into the four tables and all that. So you have these moments where you have the bigger spots, right? But all in all, the the because it was something we hadn't seen before, you get a lot of the in-between wrestling and a lot of the improv more improvisation of things. I think it was just a cleaner match, this first one.

SPEAKER_00

As chaotic as it seemed, it was it was very well done.

SPEAKER_02

Um Jeff misses and hits the 450, hits his knees and that whole thing. Um yeah, like you said, there's just there's there's so many spots. There's I wish I'd written them down, but I didn't because I was just watching the match and I was just like, ah, but that's the point, right?

SPEAKER_00

Well, let's go through some of the big spots because like I told you earlier, um, I committed this one to memory. So yeah, what else?

SPEAKER_02

Real quickly, the last thing is uh I I just want to say, can we all give fucking can we all give freaking Captain Charisma his flowers? Because I say that because watching the match, people forget. People know people talk about Edge. Edge had his whole run, he was radar superstar. Great. The the Dudley boys are the Dudley Boys, and then you have the Hardy boys, and Christian often gets forgotten. And re-watching both the matches, I want to give Christian his freaking flowers. There's a reason why I did really enjoy the Captain Charisma persona, and Christian's uh take some really dope bumps in both of these matches. So I I want to not forget Christian, or he's Christian Cage now, and now they're together again, so it's Cage and Cope or Cage and Copeland. So uh shout out to Christian, man.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, absolutely. Um, he is like Matt and Jeff are with the hardies. Christian, I think, was the more technical guy. Edge was the big the flashier of the two. Um, and then he his career took off a little mire. But yeah, like you said, Christian's Christian's phenomenal. Don't sleep on Christian, right? Uh, so yeah, there's where are my peeps?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh so like you said, there's a lot of big spots. Um I remember there's uh Matt Hardy or Christian's laid out or Edge is laid out on a table. Bubba Bray power bombs Jeff Hardy through Edge through a table just in the ring, just a clean power bomb.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Yep. Uh like you said earlier, Jeff, in the 450 splash misses, just hits the ladder, just nothing but ladder. Um Bubba does a lot of throwing the ladder at Jeff Hardy when he runs off the barricade. Um, I don't know how Jeff Jeff comes around and just bow and the camera misses it the first time. And they're like, what even happened? Because you just see a ladder fly and somebody falls. It's like, oh, it's Jeff Hardy, apparently. Like he ran off the barricade and Bubba didn't see it. Did that Bubba put the ladder on for the first time and did the helicopter thing where he was like swinging around and hitting everybody and then he held it up and put it in front and then double drop kick. Um this was the first time, or not the first, but Jeff Hardy did that swanton in the in the aisleway. Yes. Up that like that 20-foot ladder, like super high ladder.

SPEAKER_02

Because in the second one, they he does it ringside and he jumps on Spike in Rhino. And and Rhino. Who aren't even in the match. Black has a really actually dope move where he does his move against Christian off the side and he jumps over the rope and does a thing. That's actually really cool. Uh that's the other thing I was gonna say. I didn't mean to cut you off. No, go ahead. So that that first match, I believe I believe I I thought I earned hustle and heard them say that it was all three of their WrestleMania debuts. It was okay. So that's another thing. Saying that, you could really tell where by the time they had done that second one, you could tell gimmicks had set in because you can even tell in like in their interests and certain things because the Dudleys hadn't done the wazza that wasn't a thing yet. Um, the um the Edge and Christian in that first one was still kind of what I would say serious. By the second one, they'd had the whole pose and Christian poses. Christians coming out in the glasses, and so it's it was and the hardys had were the hardies, they were up to that point.

SPEAKER_00

Right, they're wearing the bright colors at that point, and still at 2000, they were still in the all-black and uh still kind of shedding off the new brood that they were, and uh so yeah, everybody had their gimmick set by seven.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so it was interesting to see that before then, where they're still kind of like raw and setting up that that kind of whole thing. So that was that was interesting too.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. There was one point where Bubba, I love Bubba because he does power bombs, like the Bubba Bomb wasn't even named yet. It was still just like a half Nelson power bomb that he had done on somebody.

SPEAKER_02

They didn't even do the tables in the first one. There's no there's no there's no big like D Bomb!

SPEAKER_00

Right, they just brought him out because that's what they were known for. So be and then Edge and Christian were doing the chair thing, but it was just a triangle ladder match, right? So, like I said, Bubba Bubba did uh they did a thing where uh Bubba had Matt Hardy outside setting up for a power bomb. Dvon had Jeff Hardy laying on a table, he was gonna they were gonna do a tandem thing. Jeff Hardy rolled off the table, Dvon puts himself through the table, and then Bubba perfect power bomb through the table. Matt Hardy takes power bombs through the floor through a table like a champ.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, man.

SPEAKER_00

Like he's he's the one that always falls flies off like outside, like him and Christian always fall like full off oh man pushed off and fall off the side and oh totally miss and just do the thing. Yeah, Edge likes to fall on the ropes, and Christian likes to fall outside the ring. That's they love to take those bumps. But we'll get we'll cut to the end of the match because again, it's a lot of big moves like this. Uh Jeff Hardy was the big highlight swanton bomb off the top, like we talked about earlier. Uh, which gave Edge and Christian were left alone in the ring. They had set up, there were two ladders, they set up a table on top as like a little platform with a little bit of Dudley had set it up at one point. Like Dudley set that up, left that in there. There was a table, like kind of laying like this with the ladders this way. Uh so it's like, oh, Matt Hardy's going up there to fight with Edge. So they're fighting, there's they're on the table, which is super wobbly, and they're trading punches back and forth. Christian comes behind. I think Christian does. Either one of them fight Matt Hardy. Uh, the other comes and pushes Matt off. He does a flip and he goes through that other table on the ground, and Edge and Christian become your new WWF tag team champions. Edge Christian win a lot of these ladder matches.

SPEAKER_02

Edge and Christian won a lot again. Give give props to Christian. We we talk there, people talk a lot about Edge and not enough about Christian. And and and if they talk about them, it's a lot of them together. But Christian was the guy that took a lot of not that, not that he didn't take more bumps than Edge, but again, re-watching just the two TLCs. Christian takes some bumps, man.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, man.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, um, Edge and Christian walk out. You're WWF tag champs, they're standing there on the table, it's all rickety, and Edge is kind of holding up. Christian, I don't think Christian stood up. He was just like, No, I'm not, I'm not.

SPEAKER_02

He was trying to, and then he was just like, No, I'm gonna say it just to raise it up.

SPEAKER_00

So uh, like I said, go back and watch that because everybody talks about TLC too, and this was before even TLC was it was just still just a channel and a band back in the 90s. So like TLC was not a thing yet. Yeah, yeah. See that. Um, so go back and look at it because this match is often forgotten about. Um, and it set the bar for it set the bar for what ladder matches are today. Like they're still, I mean, they're still inventing some new and crazy things to do, but if this match didn't happen, we wouldn't have ladder matches the way they are, I don't think. Uh just because it just set the bar. And again, these three teams just this cemented their legacy as what we were going to. It was like, because again, like you said, this is their first WrestleMania, all six of them. And they stole the show.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah, a lot of a lot of what people love about the Hardys and Edge and Christian and the Dudley Boys in the WWF, and I say that specifically because the Dudley Boys were already them in ECW before before they came in. Um, the Hardys and Edge and Christian, more homegrown the WWF, but a lot of what people remember going back to oh, they're kind of my favorite tag team start, I believe, with these TLC matches.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I just heard a podcast. Um I just heard Bubba Ray was on the Undertaker's podcast earlier in the year, saw him touching up on that, and they were talking about this. And Bubba said, if it wasn't for that match, because tag teams were not in Vince's on Vince's radar at the time, that was the point where tag teams didn't matter. So he said they didn't have a plan for any of us. So when they just kind of threw us together, we're like, We're gonna we're gonna steal the show. That was Bubba's like, we looked at each other and we're like, we're gonna steal the show, and they did. It was probably, I mean, there was the main event was the Fatal Four with Big Show, Rock, Triple H, and Mick Foley coming back. So like, that's a huge main event. And this these six, I don't want to say nobody's, but these six tag team or six men, these three tag teams came together and they stole the show. They did so hats off to uh those tag teams. Uh like I said, one of my favorite matches, not of just WrestleMania, but of all time. I can watch it all the time.

SPEAKER_02

So it is, and it is. I can I can I can second that. Good recommendation. That was a fantastic match of the week. Yeah, good one. Good one.

SPEAKER_00
