Eagles Wing Academy Podcast Episode 11 Interview: Sandy Brandt

Deuce Brandt Season 1 Episode 11

In this episode of the Eagle’s Wing Podcast, host Deuce Brandt interviews his wife, artist and muralist Sandy Brandt, about her journey from a rough Los Angeles childhood marked by gangs, crime, and survival, to a peaceful life in Las Vegas expressed through vibrant murals, cartoons, and custom artwork. Sandy shares how she discovered her gift for drawing at a young age, how teachers saw something “different” in her long before she did, and why creating art brings her joy, peace, and a sense of worship rather than stress.

Sandy talks about painting her first mural at 18 with no formal training, her refusal to rely on projectors or shortcuts, and the way she constantly pushes herself to grow in new mediums—from pencil and pastels to murals, window art, and eventually spray paint. She opens up about the perfectionism artists often wrestle with, seeing every tiny “flaw” that others miss, and learning to receive compliments and let go of unrealistic standards while still pursuing excellence.

The conversation then dives into her powerful backstory: growing up in 70s–80s Los Angeles near MacArthur Park and later South Central, surrounded by gangs, violence, and trauma. Sandy describes seeing her first killing at age nine, facing pressure to join gangs, and even learning to break into cars to survive—yet also developing a fierce determination to escape that environment and one day move somewhere safe. She explains how God’s grace, street smarts, and a deep desire for something better helped her avoid the path that led many peers to prison or death.

Sandy also honors her mother’s entrepreneurial legacy, describing how her mom left an abusive marriage, worked multiple jobs, and built small businesses—from taco trucks to ice cream trucks to fruit stands—to support the family. Through those businesses, Sandy learned money skills as a child, saw the power of work ethic, and inherited a passion for creating value and serving people rather than settling for low expectations.

Deuce and Sandy then share the story of how they met in a church singles group, how intentional prayer, community, and counsel shaped their relationship, and why they both believe in seeking skillful and godly wisdom in dating, marriage, and life decisions. They talk honestly about age differences, divorce, red flags, and how God can bring two very different personalities together for a shared purpose.

The episode closes with a powerful call to healing and growth through tools like the Heart Freedom process, forgiveness, and honest mentorship. Duce challenges listeners to stop repeating destructive patterns, to choose their community carefully, and to recognize that what feels “normal” in a broken environment is not what God intends. Whether you are an artist, an entrepreneur, a survivor of a rough neighborhood, or just someone trying to find purpose, this conversation will encourage you to discover your gift, protect your heart, and walk in wisdom.
