SPEAKER_03

Valkyries. Valkyries.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, hello. Welcome to episode number two. Two. First

SPEAKER_03

real episode.

SPEAKER_04

First real episode. The intro doesn't really count.

SPEAKER_03

We are... Reyna and... Vanessa. Vanessa. Two moms in San Francisco, ex-basketball players.

SPEAKER_04

And current teachers and entrepreneurs who decide to start this podcast basically to hang out with each other more and talk about our latest love. The Golden State Valkyries. Welcome. Say less. And you know what we really mean by say

SPEAKER_03

less. We're going to say so much more.

SPEAKER_04

Our episode today is on...

SPEAKER_03

Natalie Nakase.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, bow

SPEAKER_03

down. Say some more about Natalie. All right, let's get into

SPEAKER_04

it. Let's get into it. So, Natalie Nakase. Coach. In a nutshell, UCLA point guard. Walk on. Turned global coach. Turned history maker. As the first head coach of our very own Golden State Valkyries. She's coached in Japan. She's also played and coached in Germany. She's made waves with the Clippers as one of the first Asian-American women on an NBA bench. And now she's bringing calm intensity and major vision to the W. She's got Bay Area brainpower with that underdog grit. Basically, if strategy and swagger had a coach, it'd be Nakase. All right. All right. So when you think of what you know about her... What bubbles to the surface?

SPEAKER_03

Well, I mean, I, I think you, there are a couple of points where I was like, wanted to shout out little inspirational moments that I found in embedded in that, that synopsis of say more. Well, like, like that she turned on a full ride. I think to not her favorite school. It was like, yeah, here's a little snippet of coach Nakase herself. from an interview like two months ago on NESN.

SPEAKER_02

I took the more challenging route. I went with like the walk-on and let me prove you wrong that I could play there and I could start there and I could help you rather than go to UCI. It just was not attractive to me.

SPEAKER_03

She turned down a full scholarship to go to her dream school of UCLA. She had not been heavily recruited, so she was a walk-on, but she was injured and had a red shirt. So she was a walk-on as a freshman, right? Yeah, but she was injured, so she didn't play.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

So she redshirted. And, yeah, she's just suffered from knee injury. So, yeah, I was thinking about, you know, we're 45 and we're going through that stuff. But, like, as a 20-something coming up with, like, her diehard love of the game. Like, how much fortitude she had to have to, like, oh, my gosh, another surgery. Yeah. I want to keep playing.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Is that

SPEAKER_04

why she pivoted to coaching?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I think it got to the point where I read an interview where she was just like, I'm not doing surgery and it's time to coach.

SPEAKER_04

And then she went to Japan. That was an interesting fact that she went to Japan. She crashed on her friend's couch who was there. And when she was there, she wanted to play for the women's league in Japan. And once she arrived, would she find out? Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

She wasn't allowed to play because she's not a citizen, which is such like a relatable thing as well. I was like, oh my gosh, that is such a 20 something random ass thing to do. Like I, did I tell you I went across the Pyrenees with a photocopy of my passport thinking like, no big deal. I can't find my passport. I'll just take a photocopy and pretended to be asleep.

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And the French authorities didn't check. It was very cute. Things were a little bit looser. Yeah, a little looser in the 90s. Back in the day. But yeah, not loose enough for her to play on the Japanese professional team. And

SPEAKER_04

instead, she pivoted to men's coaching. Yes, in the pro, in their highest pro league. And I think she was an assistant coach initially, and then that coach left mid-season. And because she'd basically been actually coaching the whole time, they just bumped her. up to head coach

SPEAKER_03

yeah i mean that story was also impressive because her friend said like just keep showing up like just keep showing up to the practices and it was like two weeks of her just showing up early doing the scouting doing the analysis kind of like here you go here's my brain on paper there's notes and he was he's an ex-mba player that was coaching in japan yes and finally he was just like what do you what do you want out of this um but yeah eventually it was like a war of attrition where she was just like hello i'm here i'm here and i'm really good

SPEAKER_04

i'm not going away and i'm really good and let me just show you my notes yeah again oh okay yeah you're right you are really good and i guess yes we are hiring you it seems like that's like a constant theme and that's what it's I mean I'm sure being a woman this is just like why this is a constant theme because it's not like you know everybody had to go through this but it's like she's constantly just not you know she's not the one that someone would think about initially yeah and I like that also that throughout it all there was this one point when someone was like what do you really want to do and she's like I want to coach in the NBA

SPEAKER_03

yeah

SPEAKER_04

and like that was it and she just said it point blank it wasn't like I'm not sure. Right. And then that just became the goal. And she turned down like some other really cool jobs because it was leading her away from the

SPEAKER_03

NBA. Oh, really? Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

This was after she got her foot in the door, I think as an intern with the Clippers too. And they're like, you need to just like stay focused to what you want. How

SPEAKER_03

dare they say that to her? She's the most focused person I've ever met. Witness, macro or

SPEAKER_04

micro.

SPEAKER_03

Coach Knock, we love you. Yes.

SPEAKER_04

We love you and we love how fierce you are. And I mean, you are such a gem and you're our gem now. Like I was talking about you to my middle school students today. We are going, you know, we're almost the end of the year, almost summer. So we are just looking at the light at the end of the tunnel and somehow after taking attendance i had to launch into an inspirational well i was hoping it was an inspirational speech um to my eighth graders i was like do you know natalina case and they were looking at me you know most of them had no clue what i was saying and then i had to give them all you know a fab bio and just be like that's it all right now you know about her we got to watch the game so just know that there's a whole group of students in sf usd who when they woke up this morning, they may not have known about you. Yeah. And I'm hoping that they went home and told their families around the dinner table.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Here's some inspiration from coach Nakasi herself.

SPEAKER_02

I'm starting something and I'm hopefully motivating women to, you know, go after their goals, go after their dreams, you know, even if it may be seem unrealistic.

SPEAKER_04

No, she, Natalie's the type of person who she works out with NBA or former NBA players on on the beach in Southern California and drags like sandbags and then sprints to like lifeguard stations. Of course she does.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Yeah. That's awesome. Yes. And I'm like, she's on Baywatch in her free time. She's doing Baywatch for 2025. Oh my God.

SPEAKER_04

We need to be doing this. We're in our mid forties, constantly talking about how we need to be strength training, but actually not strength training. And

SPEAKER_03

that is the key to joint health, right? Right. So

SPEAKER_04

thank you. Natalie for reminding us of the importance of, um, dragging

SPEAKER_03

sandbags, but also listening to your body. You know, I, I really respect that. You know, she had the option to do one more surgery and she said, Nope.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I'm going to pivot to coaching. And then she got obsessed with that and put all that love into it. And now she's, she's the head coach. It's awesome. Um, all right. So I, we have some questions here. um we're gonna do a little game

SPEAKER_04

oh i love little games

SPEAKER_03

so this is a vibe check okay okay i'm gonna ask you questions you're gonna answer them

SPEAKER_04

fine okay i'm gonna get into the flow

SPEAKER_03

you're now gonna make fine like listen to your gut okay going what would natalie do okay natalie do what's her power color on game day

SPEAKER_04

Are you giving me options or I just have to invent

SPEAKER_03

this? You want me to give you options?

SPEAKER_04

No, I mean, I can invent this. Her power

SPEAKER_03

color. What's her power

SPEAKER_04

color?

SPEAKER_03

Think about all you know about Natalie. All the videos you

SPEAKER_04

watched. Oh my goodness. Fine. Black.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. I would say black too. I think she looks great in black. If the Valkyries were in a heist movie, what role would Nakase play? The mastermind, the getaway driver, or the one hacking the security system?

SPEAKER_04

I mean, literally all of them. Mastermind for sure, but also could be the security system.

SPEAKER_03

What's her playlist vibe?

SPEAKER_04

Again, are you giving me options?

SPEAKER_03

I can give you options. All right. So do you think she's hip hop indie or you're like silent strategic chess game ambiance?

SPEAKER_04

No, no. I think she's like 90s hip hop.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I would think so too. She's our

SPEAKER_04

generation. If we were referencing Bay Area stuff, I think she is blasting KML jams. 106.1! Okay. If

SPEAKER_03

Coach Nakase hosted a reality show, what would it be called?

SPEAKER_04

It would be called... Figure It Out. What?

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Okay. God, I'm nervous. I know. You're kidding me. If she weren't coaching, what alternate career would she dominate? Life coach, architect, secret agent, president?

SPEAKER_04

I don't like either one of those for her. What about a chef? Because you have to, you know, it's like you're thinking of all the ingredients and you're making potions.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_04

And you're serving it up. And you want to get that Michelin star.

SPEAKER_03

Nailed it. Nailed it. What would be the name of her signature sneaker or apparel line?

SPEAKER_04

Oh, excuse me. I know exactly what it is.

SPEAKER_03

The

SPEAKER_04

Nikase Nike sneaker is called Say Less.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I think that goes with their whole, like, just do the work and it'll speak for itself.

SPEAKER_04

Say Less. Say

SPEAKER_03

Less, yeah. Okay. Next one. If the Valkyries had a mascot that matched Nakase's energy, what would it be?

SPEAKER_04

A feline. A fierce feline.

SPEAKER_03

I

SPEAKER_04

mean, when I think of her, I think of the best version of a cat. Like the independents, the smarts.

SPEAKER_03

Did you read Cat Warriors? No. You're such a teacher.

UNKNOWN

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

It's like connecting the dots. No pun intended there. I did

SPEAKER_04

not read Cat Warriors, but I'm pretty sure my older daughter

SPEAKER_03

did. You get to assign Natalie Nakase a superpower, what would it be?

SPEAKER_04

Ooh. She sees in the future.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. That's like having AI for coaching. I was thinking of that with her already superpowers, that she has really good analysis and scouting and like can report back and tell people what they're doing wrong in a in a way that like like that's what got her into the mba yeah it was her scouting her analysis skills and um i was like i wonder how ai is changing like the like stealing those jobs you know like i'm just like analyzing totally and just saying like this is the These are the plays of these teams. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, no, I'm

SPEAKER_04

changing my answer. I'm changing my answer. A healer, like where she could put, like someone is injured and she could put her hands on them and basically do Reiki and just actually fully heal them in the moment.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

No more injuries for any

SPEAKER_03

of your team members. She just said that in an interview the other day. Here's a little clip from that interview from the press conference right after the first preseason game.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Just sore. Um, like I said, like, uh, you guys all know my favorite word right now is health coming from training camp. So I'm not, uh, I'm not touching soreness. I just, I want people to be healthy.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Her keyword is. Oh, I love that. I know. Thank you. Yeah. Coach. Not that we need that. Um, so my let's, uh, let's talk a little more personal questions. Um, after everything you learned about coach Nakase, um, what is one thing you're going to take into your life? Like one thing you might use in your parenting or one thing you might use in your middle school, other than being like complete fangirl for you.

SPEAKER_04

I mean, I, I love the discipline that her dad instilled in her and like being around my own kids, being around the kids that I teach and, It is one of those things where it's like you see the kids who have that drive and you see that that's something that's connected to their families. And so I wouldn't say to be nutso or anything in terms of discipline, but I think it's really good to reinforce learning skills and then practicing them and then getting better at something. Because at the end of the day, people feel good when they know how to do things. They feel pride. Yeah. Yeah,

SPEAKER_03

I mean, it's like it's snowballs, right? It's like I'm watching The Bear with my oldest kid and...

SPEAKER_04

How is it? I haven't seen

SPEAKER_03

it. It's great. We're on like episode three. But there's one character who his thing is donuts and he's just a complete donut nerd looking up the recipes and like working on the palette colors. And so I was telling my oldest kid like... this is what I want for you. I want you to like find something that clicks for you that you want to work really, really hard at. And like, it keeps you up at night. You can't force that, but like you can force them to try things. Yeah. Yeah. As a parent. And I think that's where it's, it's tricky in San Francisco because everything's like, there's so many options and there's not a lot of time in the day. And then when kids are like, I really hate something. You're like, do you respect that, that they hate it? Or do you push them a little further to keep going?

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

It's like that balance.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. We have a policy of no quitting. If you start a season or you start a lesson, you have to finish that season or that payment period. I agree. No, but more like you don't start something and then just because you don't like it at first, maybe you shouldn't quit because maybe you'll like it later.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. There's that period where you're not good at something. And when you're not good at something... You don't like it. No. I mean, the one thing that I can think of that was really different... for me, this one moment in my life where I was like terrible at something. And yet from the beginning, I loved it. It was when I learned how to snowboard.

SPEAKER_03

And

SPEAKER_04

the first day, thank you, Mike Marina for taking me to mountain high in LA, but I fell like, you know, 5,000 times and was so bruised and so sore for days on end afterwards. And yet I don't know if I've ever experienced this, like the joy and love of, that was occurring on the mountain. And then afterwards it was just like monumental. Yeah. So, so sometimes I think you can have that, but most often when you're not good at something, it's normal not to enjoy it. And that's where I'm like, you have to push the kids to get past that because then they'll enjoy it more. And I guess that's just parenting.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Okay. What about you? I was going to say the thing that I took away from watching, there's a really great, I recommend looking it up. It's a YouTube channel. interview of Nakase's parents and she's like playing basketball with her dad as a grown-up and then there's like little snippets of her as a kid um like just a really wholesome little cute little video so look it up um but in that there's like a little part where she talks about like just growing up with this myth that her dad was he said he was the best basketball player in California and so she grew up with this like belief that they were a basketball family, even though she was like tiny and like, you know, he wasn't the best basketball player in California. It's from six years ago, but there's this little part that I really appreciated. Let me find it. Just after this. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

I got started in basketball because of my dad. When we were little kids growing up, he claimed he was the best basketball player in Southern California. So with that in mind, we believed him. You know, we just kind of felt his passion. We followed in his footsteps. I'll rebound

SPEAKER_03

for you. So, yeah. Also just like, wait, do I lie to my kids to make them better at things? Like to give them a little boost? like I'm like what myths do I uphold to kind of just like keep them

SPEAKER_04

if the outcome is the outcome that occurred with her then I need to embrace this

SPEAKER_03

but can you think of any like that we do that I don't know

SPEAKER_04

otherwise I like to just frame things in the positive

SPEAKER_03

to

SPEAKER_04

reinforce things that might maybe we aren't doing fully But just to give

SPEAKER_03

a sense that we are. Oh, like to manifest. Yeah, I guess lie. I don't like the word lie. It's not lie. Yeah, like to look on the positive side of things. Yeah. And hope that we are leaving at 11 a.m., even though you know you're not getting out the door until 12.

SPEAKER_04

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, are we lying to ourselves?

SPEAKER_04

I mean, if you've ever lived in Southern California, you tell someone that you'll be there in 20 minutes and you're still in your robe.

SPEAKER_03

Are you one of those people that are like, I'm here and I'm actually at the red light two blocks away? You are, aren't you? Of course I am. Is that a Southern California thing? Maybe, I don't

SPEAKER_04

know. I'm from here, but I did spend formative years in my 20s in Southern California where... from West LA to the East side, we would be lying left and right about where we were. And then just be like, God, there's so much traffic on the 10. Totally.

SPEAKER_03

Um, okay. So, okay.

SPEAKER_04

I have some questions though. Okay. What do you think? Okay. Here are my questions. Um, what are you thinking? What are you, what are you expecting? Like is going to happen based on like, coaching or like what kind of vibe? are you expecting to see in games or as the season rolls out? Cause like we haven't even had the first official,

SPEAKER_03

right? We've

SPEAKER_04

had two preseason

SPEAKER_03

and

SPEAKER_04

some major cuts just happened.

SPEAKER_03

And we've watched about 20 videos. So that's how much we know. That's how much we know. It's really going. So moving forward, a hunch I have. Yeah. I, so I saw one, the one pregame and I would say my hunch is that the Nakase is going to be really good at looking at what she did wrong as a coach. She gave me a little morsel. I'm going. Yeah. Here's a snippet from that same press conference.

SPEAKER_02

That's where we had our turnover. So I really wasn't happy with our 11 turnovers in the first half. We ended up having only four in the second. But we got to work on that. We got to work on the inbound. I think I just I got to clean that up. That's on me.

SPEAKER_03

I very rarely hear coaches say my bad. So I think she's going to be very responsible. I think she's going to be accountable. And, you know, it was rough today to see the cuts that were made from the team that were down to our 12. But I'm going to lean on the side of I trust her more.

SPEAKER_01

her

SPEAKER_03

smarts here and that she's going to be able to bring these women together despite losing people that they were just so they were so gelling you know like she was playing everyone in like sort of the showcase I feel like I was a bit of a novice because I wasn't

SPEAKER_04

expecting the cuts whereas people who know the game knew that they were happening. And so like

SPEAKER_03

a big smack in the face.

SPEAKER_04

Yes. So I, but we didn't know who was getting cut. No. Well, I, first of all, I did not know that they were about to cut five more. Didn't definitely didn't know who. And so to see that today, I was like, Oh my God, because I've already like, it felt attached to them. Yeah. Yeah. And, and then, and then I was like, okay, let, let it go and trust the process. And also like, there wasn't going to be, a good answer. It's not like I had like five people that I was like, we should cut these five. I was like, but I mean, again, like we're not sports analysts here, but like based on, based on how Nakase has performed in all of her different roles in all of the different organizations in the countries with the different, like all the different varieties of people who she's worked with and, She always just seems to be so thoughtful and in, in her analysis. And so I'm just like, all right, we just trust. And also it's a learning, like, you know, we will see how it goes, but we're going to be there for it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I think

SPEAKER_03

that's why we're sad. I think it shows that we're getting connected to the team, learning their names. Now we only have 12 to memorize. 12 to memorize. We're only going to have 13 episodes.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, wait. What are you doing to get ready for Friday's first game? I

SPEAKER_03

think we're going to keep watching some highlights of the players so that I can start... I don't know, looking more at the plays and less about which individual is doing what. With my brain, I have trouble focusing on... I could never do what Coach Nakase does. I have trouble focusing on what the two players out of the play are doing. The choreography is beyond my periphery. and and so i realized when i watched the first game i was very i wasn't even up to three players like that's my max is like seeing what three players are doing and so i think if i learn who they are i can stop being like who's that who's number two number two's gone i can i can start looking at like what kind of offense she's running and kind of nerd out in that land.

SPEAKER_04

I wish they would hand out when you go to the theater a

SPEAKER_03

playbill or something. I wish they would hand out

SPEAKER_04

something

SPEAKER_03

like that. Maybe the t-shirts will have the roster on the back and then you just look at the person in front of you. That would be genius. If only I worked for the Valkyries.

SPEAKER_04

Or should I make them? Should I make that? Alright, well what about what

SPEAKER_03

are you

SPEAKER_04

going to wear?

SPEAKER_03

I'm going to do the makeup again. Because my violet lavender eyeshadow yeah that was that was on

SPEAKER_04

point

SPEAKER_03

um and that was just like a little wink literal wink at all the people on the bus of like i'm here i don't have any swag but like i'm on the same page as you well

SPEAKER_04

you were wearing your union shirt the purple union shirt from your father-in-law so

SPEAKER_03

andy wore one too yes noticed represent the working class

SPEAKER_04

great fashion choices

SPEAKER_03

i know um what are you gonna wear out of all of you're the you have the wardrobe

SPEAKER_04

Well, thank you for asking. Number one, I'm going to do my nails at home. I'm into doing them at home these days. Saving some money.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. All right. That's number one. Number

SPEAKER_04

two, though, I think I'm going to go a little bit nuts and dye my hair.

UNKNOWN

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

permanent or like i'm gonna die purple you are such a fangirl i was trying to avoid fangirl but like you're you're just going all the way

SPEAKER_04

oh yeah i changed my bio on instagram

SPEAKER_03

are we gonna put like little hearts on your cheek and fangirl

SPEAKER_04

um probably world is our oyster yeah but then i also have a lavender jumpsuit i

SPEAKER_03

think the jumpsuit

SPEAKER_04

i think i'm gonna go teach in the jumpsuit On Friday, I might be dying because it's going to be hot. The inspiration doesn't end. The inspiration never ends. Children, today, today again, we will talk about Natalie Nakase.

SPEAKER_03

Episode two.

SPEAKER_04

But okay, don't worry. I'm back to wearing my jacket because I did announce last pod that moving forward, I would always have the founding guard. What is this? A varsity jacket? A letterman

SPEAKER_03

jacket? Yeah. I think we were calling them starter jackets, but that starter jacket for me was like the Eagles and Cowboys puffer jackets.

SPEAKER_04

Like the satin.

SPEAKER_03

And I think. Satine. Yeah. These are not. These are varsity jackets. No, I think. They're like something out of Greece.

SPEAKER_04

I was wrong.

SPEAKER_03

Musical Greece, right? I sometimes

SPEAKER_04

get French, you know, I like just confuse things because I'm French. So I was calling it a starter jacket, but it's.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, that was you that started that. It was. I started that rumor. You also said you were, you were coming for Natalie. Yes. I

SPEAKER_04

may have said I was coming for Natalie. But that also. doesn't translate. It sounds different in French. I'm coming for you. No, no.

SPEAKER_03

Does anyone else say Valks or is that a Vanessa-ism?

SPEAKER_04

I'm

SPEAKER_03

pretty sure

SPEAKER_04

people say Valks.

SPEAKER_03

Valks. Okay.

SPEAKER_04

And by pretty sure... You mean your kids. I'm pretty sure that I'm getting other people to say Valks. It just seems to flow. And okay, this is either a truth or it's not a truth, but my awesome ticket rep, Jamie... Holler at you, girl, who got me to buy the season tickets. I have this memory that she said that they go by the Valks.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. You're just increasing. This is like the lies. Yeah. So it's

SPEAKER_04

either totally true. Thank you, Jamie. Or it happened in my head. I can't remember. Who knows? But

SPEAKER_03

it sounds so good. Yeah. We got to get something right. I mean, we got the color wrong. But maybe if we can confirm that Valks is a thing. We can't say Valk Lavender anymore. It's not the thing. We can't say it. Maybe we can confirm

SPEAKER_04

Valks. Valkyrie Violet.

SPEAKER_03

Let's do some brain. We're going to end every episode with trying to make up a new cheer.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, yeah. How to make up a new cheer. Okay. Valkyries, Valkyries, Valkyries. Okay, your turn.

SPEAKER_03

You're just on fire today. When I

SPEAKER_04

say Valk, you say Reese.

SPEAKER_03

Reese.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, you want to do a chant?

SPEAKER_03

Valk this way. You got to do a V. Valk this way. Valk this way. Okay. Is that Aerosmith? We're getting an endorsement. All right, we're signing off. We'll see you at the game on Friday. May 16th.

SPEAKER_04
