Faith in the Fire: Standing Firm in Spiritual Warfare

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne Season 5 Episode 3

Send us a text

Christian spiritual warfare is real — especially when you’re walking in obedience to God. In this episode of Faithfully Invested with Allen & Stacy Jo, we talk about recognizing spiritual warfare, standing firm in faith, and using biblical truth to overcome everyday resistance.

Spiritual warfare doesn’t always look dramatic. Often it shows up as confusion, discouragement, relational tension, mental pressure, or heaviness that surfaces when you’re advancing God’s Kingdom. Scripture reminds us that our battle is not against people or circumstances, but against spiritual forces — and recognizing the battle correctly changes how we stand.

In this episode, we cover:

  • How to identify spiritual warfare in daily life
  • Why resistance often increases when you step into God’s calling
  • The Armor of God (Ephesians 6) and how it protects your mind, heart, and identity
  • Why unity, prayer, and knowing who you are in Christ weaken the enemy’s strategies
  • How to stand from victory, not fight for it

You are not alone. You are not underpowered. And you are not losing — Jesus has already won.

Hey, welcome back to Faithfully Invested. I'm Allen and I'm here with my lovely, supremely better half Ooh, Stacy Jo Supremely better half. Huh? Supremely better half. Wow. Okay. I'll take it. Yeah, and I'll keep giving it. So today we hope you're doing well and, uh. The conversation we're getting into today is one that we've all faced. It's a topic that we've all faced, uh, but most of us avoid it until the enemy's noise gets so loud, uh, that it's, you can't ignore it any longer. Today we're talking about spiritual warfare, uh, not the Hollywood version. Uh, not that crazy stuff, and not, not that, that, not that that doesn't exist, not that that actually doesn't exist, right? But we're not talking about, uh. That we're talking about the, the, the real, the every day, the, the subtle pushback that happens when we decide to follow in our calling. Mm. That God's placed in our life. The moments when resistance, oppression, and confusion or tension rises and places, and it rises outta nowhere, but where peace once was, there's confusion, tension, tension and oppression. That's what we're talking about today, the everyday stuff. Yes. Because you know, as we aim high in our calling, we can be assured. We can be assured that we are going to come under fire for following in obedience. I don't know about you, Allen, but actually I do know about you. We've both experienced that. So I was about to say, I hope you know about me. I do know about that, but. You know, if you're listening today and you've been feeling that heat maybe in your marriage, maybe in your mind, or feeling that your purpose, like you don't know what your purpose is, or even in your home or business, you know, you're not imagining the challenges that you're facing because when you start advancing the kingdom, oh, the enemy, he does not throw a celebration. I think we already know that he tries to discourage you, distract you, derail you, and he wants to place doubt in your mind and he wants you to be in despair. Yeah. So today certainly isn't about giving him power, but it is about exposing his strategies, the enemy strategies, and reminding you that you stand under the covering of God who has already won. Yeah, he's already won the battle. So this episode is for anyone who's been walking through spiritual pressure and wondering, you know, maybe why does it feel like everything is hitting all at once? Have, I don't know, Allen, I, I have felt that because that's the game he plays. That's, that I have felt that even, yeah. The, the greater the calling, the heavier the warfare. Right. And the, the, the more faithful that we are to the calling, uh. That God's placed in front of us, the more faithful we are. Yeah. The heavier we're gonna get hit. Right. You know, and I remember when I started going to university, uh, they, they're like, are you sure Guy guys that were ahead of me? Are you sure? Uh, you want to go into ministry and, and do this, that and the other? Because just prepare, prepare to have a bullseye on your back. And I'm like, yeah, whatever. Because yeah, there's, there, yeah, there's, we're targeted, right? Yes, we're gonna go through warfare, but as I've progressed and matured in my faith, it doesn't, that means that I face warfare often, but it also means that I know, and I believe in my heart of hearts that Christ's victory is greater than that warfare. Yeah. And that's, that's it. So, but I often hear it said too though, that the enemy will attack you at your highest calling. So whatever your highest calling is, and I, I believe that our marriage for is our highest calling. Our family is our highest calling. Absolutely. And that's where absolutely where the enemy likes to come in and attack. Um, but then in, in ministry as well, because. We're impacting the kingdom. Yeah. But yeah. Impacting the world for his kingdom. Absolutely. So, well that yes, that's why we're gonna, we're gonna take shots and that's all right. Uh, and it's not fun. Uh, but we are blessed and we are anointed, and we are covered, uh, in the precious blood of Jesus. Amen. So today's challenge, uh. Warfare is a challenge, but we usually always start with a question and, and today's question is how do believers, how do we all stand firm believers is kind of a general term. How do Christ followers stand firm when the enemy pushes back? That's a good question. Right? So, you know, something to ask yourself. How do, how do you stand for men and women? How do Christ follower. True believer. Stanley Lee used to say that, you know, uh, the Stan, he was most best known for Spider-Man, but one of the best comic uh, writers of our time, he is like, he, he used to call his, his fans true believers. Oh geez. Yeah. But, uh, true believing in something a little different, I believe. Yeah. But you know, obviously Jesus is substantially greater than Spider-Man, but. Truth, believers, capital T, truth believers, uh, moving on. How do, how do you stand firm when the enemy pushes back? When you're, when we're doing everything right, but suddenly everything feels like it's spiraling down the drain when obedience brings resistance, uh, when peace turns into pressure. Clar. What was I gonna say? When clarity, when clarity falls into confusion. Okay. See what I was doing there? Ah, anyways. Gotcha. This is what happens. Clarity can fall into confusion and, and peace can turn into mayhem in a moment for no reason. Spiritual warfare isn't always dramatic. Sometimes it just shows up in doubt, discouragement, confusion, tension in the home. Tension when you are on vacation. Miscommunication with your spouse. Yeah. Emotional heaviness. That seems to appear out of nowhere. Mm-hmm. That's, I, I recall that when I was coming out of addiction, and I think I mentioned this, it was either last week or the. We, I don't know, it was earlier another episode. Uh, emotional heaviness or emotional emptiness. When I was coming out of addiction, I, my, I was just emotionless and that's what I was, I was neither, I was neither angry nor peaceful. I was just blank. And I, that freaked me out. And I, and then I called my sponsor at the time, right? And he is like, it's calm dude. It's gonna be okay. Yeah, you're going in the right direction. So anyway, but you know, the challenge is this, many believers are walking through spiritual warfare without realizing that's what it is. So they fight the wrong battle. You know, we fight against people, we fight about fight against the circumstances themselves, and we fight with each other. We do, and it's often, it's common, often for no reason whatsoever. Right. Sometimes we, you know, the enemy will try and get a foothold here. He will. And sometimes we let him get a foothold here. I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. Right. You know, we're a married couple just like anyone else. And life isn't just a big bowl of cherries, but. You know, Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12 that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world, forces of this darkness, right against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Hello's not. Him against me. Me. It's not a physical battle here. Right. Right. And it's important for us to recognize that when we're in it and, and as we mature in our faith and as we mature in our, our marriage. Yeah. Uh, as like-minded believers together. Uh, we'll, we will see. We'll come, it doesn't mean we're not gonna argue. It doesn't mean we're not gonna see eye to eye, but when, when this, when. It. What it does mean is as we mature, we're able to recognize it for what it is, right? Which is a spiritual battle, right? Everything we see is a battle. Everything we see on the, on the media, out the front door, wherever you go, there's a battle between dark and light. Yeah. A battle between God and the enemy. It's a battle, right? And even when, so we know it feels natural. We know it feels like. The symptoms are in the natural, but it really is a spiritual battle and the enemy, but the enemy cannot stop God's plan for your life. He, he really can't. He only has as much power as you're willing to give him. Yeah. So he tries to wear you down until you stop yourself and then, you know, then he's got you and. It's not that it's not redeemable. Gotcha.'cause it is. But he's gotcha. He's gotcha. He wears you down. He makes you think that it's, but he's only gotcha if you allow him to get you. That's it. That's right. That's it. So he and I, I love what you said there, and that's a, uh, we see that that's a, uh, a theme that we see through the Unbound. Mm-hmm. Con or, um, curriculum. Thank you. You're welcome. Content, content, uh, that, uh, yeah. It's, it's all through, yeah. The unbound content. Yeah, it is. And we'll, we'll come back to Unbound, uh, a little later. All righty. You know what sounds good? Uh, because we got, we gotta get unbound because the struggle's real. And we don't wanna allow the enemy to bind us down and in the struggle, you know? And, and it should be a struggle. If, if we're just sitting there and letting him have it his way, then that's not much of a struggle. Right. You know, is when we're fighting our way out from victory, right. From Christ's victory. When we're, when we're the, the struggle is when we're fighting back. The struggle isn't when we're just kicking back and letting him feed our lunch, letting him right. Take advantage. Yeah. And, and get the upper hand Christ believer. At no point should the enemy have the upper hand. At no point should the enemy of our souls, uh, win the battle against us.'cause we, we belong to one who's greater and his name is Jesus. But the struggle is real. And as, and as we stand on the, the firm foundation who is Jesus Christ, as we embrace the cornerstone, we will come under fire. I think we've established that for sure. Uh, so the, like, the struggle's real, but so is Jesus' victory. Over the enemy. A couple of thousand years ago, the enemy was deth and Declawed at the cross, and he was stripped of any authority that he had. Not to say he doesn't have power in this world, but he was stripped of all his authority. When Jesus walked out of that tomb, he's like, Hey, got the keys to death in hell right here. Get outta here. So we do. So do we believe that?'cause we, we believe that we believe that Jesus' victory over the enemy stands true in our lives today. That, that Christ is greater. Christ is greatest, in fact. So, so, uh, so you're stepping in to something that God's called you to. You're growing deeper spiritually. You're working on your marriage. You're launching a business or a ministry. You're serving a ministry. And, and before long you real, you start, you see this resistance rising outta nowhere. Disagreements. They used to be small, now they feel mm-hmm. Mountainous right? Uh, decisions used to feel easy. Now we're all foggy about that stuff. You feel spiritually drained. Motivation is gone. You're emotionally tired and and mentally scattered. You're praying, but the distractions are louder than the truth when these moments happen. Yeah. And that's a tough place to be hard. That's a tough place to be. We're trying to stay focused, but. It's challenging place to be when everything else is pulling at you. Yeah, and we, it's so important that we recognize that as. Spiritual warfare. Right? Because the enemy don't want you moving forward. The enemy doesn't want us advancing the kingdom. Mm-hmm. Sure. So, and it, and it can show up. You know, spiritual warfare shows up in subtle ways. You know, maybe it's a heaviness that you can't explain. Have you ever just. And I know I have, have you ever just woken up one morning and you're like, I just feel heavy, like I know you have because you've come to me and you've said, Hey, I need you to pray over me for this. Yeah. I, I've got a heaviness on me, but you can't explain it. Or maybe, you know, you've gone somewhere and you come back and. And you just feel this heaviness. So it can, it can be subtle, you know, maybe it's anxiety that doesn't line up with your reality. You know, things are going great. Why do you have this, this pressure, this anxiety that you're feeling all of a sudden, um, misunderstandings that come outta nowhere. Hmm. Can, I don't know nothing about that. Right. That never happens to us. Yeah. Hmm. Last week. Um, you know, it even temptations that show up right when you're trying to move forward, you know, uh, a the enemy tries to derail you and says, oh, but you could do this. You know? And in marriage, the enemy loves to stir division, not because the marriage is weak. No, not because the marriage is weak, but because unity shines light in the darkness. And the enemy is trying to come against marriages that are strong, marriages that are built on his foundation. Yeah. That are built on his promises because he knows if he can just get that division in there, if he can just slip in a misunderstanding that goes haywire, then. He can take control. So the enemy tries to provoke friction, you know, miscommunication. Or how about an emotional distance? Because you know, I hate emotional distance. I know you do. I know you hate emotional. I do too. But I think you hate emotional distance even more than I do. Yeah, that's, yeah. So. Emotional distance. No. Yeah. Uhhuh. Anyway, uh, y'all know what we're talking about, you know, you do. Right? Uh, but then, you know, aside from emotional distance, there's that private struggle. You know, moments that we don't talk about when, when we feel spiritually empty, uh, feel like our mind is being attacked. Uh, we're confused, we're scattered, uh, feeling like our, that we're in a battle all alone. Friends, you are not alone. We are never alone. That's right. We, that's why we, we all, we, we need each other. Uh, the enemy will try to separate us and isolate us, but we are better in community. Remember, the last five letters of community is unity, and we need. Unity and community to to stick together and fight together. There's power in numbers and yes, so. So if you're feeling spiritually dry, if your mind's being attacked, uh, know that you're not alone. You know, we, we want to, we want to get in the community and fight to fight those battles with join link arms, with, with other brothers and sisters and, and, and go forward together. Um, the enemy thrives in isolation, so when you're overwhelmed, you know, he'll, he'll do his best to isolate you, and he'll whisper things like you're on your own. Mm-hmm. Nobody's coming. Right. Your God's not with you. Yeah. This isn't gonna shift. He'll, he'll lie. And, and he's got nothing new than he had in the garden, did he? Did God really say? Yeah. Yeah. He did say, mm-hmm. Uh, I remember it distinctly. In fact, I wrote it down and, uh. So when he's saying, when he is filling us with these lies, remember that voice who's questioning our calling is not the Holy Spirit. It's the enemy of our soul. And he's, and he is doing his best to derail us. Mm-hmm. And convince us. And, and he's, he's the father of lies and we need to recognize that, that he is the father of lies. All he, all he is going to do is lie to us all. He, he wants to pull us away from our calling. So when we hear this nonsense, we have to recognize that no, it's not random and understand that it's warfare, right? Yeah. So, you know, Ephesians 6:10-11 tells us exactly how to stand firm. It says, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you will be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. So the solution isn't to fight harder in your own strength, it's to stand under the strength of God. And every piece of that armor is intentional. Hmm. The Belt of Truth grounds us so that lies don't take root. The breast pro. The breast plate. That's right. Of righteousness, of righteousness. Guard your heart when the enemy tries to bring shame or condemnation because shame and condemnation do not come from the Lord. And the shoes of peace keep you stable when chaos hits. Yeah, because the enemy loves to take peace and twist it and turn it into chaos. Yeah. And the shield of faith. That extinguishes the darts that were meant to create. The fear and the doubt, the hel of salvation protects your mind, right? And the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God, it's the tangible word of God, cuts through the confusion, right? So truth wins over confusion every time. And when we decide to stand on it. And use it as it's intended to be used. It is a powerful weapon. Absolutely. I, I want to elaborate on that a little bit. The, uh, excellent job on the, on the, uh, full armor of God, but I, I do, I do wanna elaborate on that. Yeah. The Lord has, the Lord. Really? The Holy Spirit gave you a download. Yeah. When I was, I was working with our friend Kenny Hobbs, uh, co. Oh, oh no. Ago. A YA year ago. A year ago. A year ago. Yeah. A year and a half ago. Uh, and we were writing a book, uh, together, working with some other authors. Uh, it was called Fit to Fight, available on Amazon. Check it out, right? Fit to Fight Allen L. Thorne, Kenny Hobbs. You know, you won it. Um, but, uh, so I was writing a teaching here and I was doing a study on Ephesians six. Mm-hmm. The Full Armor of God, uh, Kenny and the band of Brothers are big. It, it's the core of Band of Brothers, which, uh, which is, uh, the Full Armor of God. And as I was studying this, as I was in Ephesians 6, I was going through it and I, I was like, would you look at that? He's like, yeah, did you catch that? The Holy Spirit seemed to say. And uh, and uh, so what I hear me out here, um, the helmet of Salvation. Salvation in who, where is our salvation? Peter or, or, uh, yeah. Peter says, and acts that by only one name. Well, we find salvation. There's only one name. His name is Jesus. So our salvation is found in Jesus, the helmet of salvation, and it guard the helmet of salvation guards our mind. Right? Uh, the breast played a righteousness who makes us righteous before the Father Jesus. Jesus. The answer's always Jesus. The answer is Jesus. Um, the and the breast played a righteous just as the helm of salvation. Uh. Guards our mind. The breast played a righteousness, guards our heart and, and the um, the right, and Jesus makes us righteous before the Father. So the, so we have salvation and righteousness both. Point back to Jesus. We have the, uh, the belt of truth. Uh, who is Jesus? He is the way, the truth and the life. Uh, we have the shoes of peace. Uh, who's the prince of peace? Jesus who gives us peace, not as the world offers it Jesus, but only as he offers it. Jesus. And Jesus. And then he's always the answer. And then we have the shield of faith. Faith in who? From the beginning, from from Genesis to Revelation. The shield of faith, which, which guards us, protects us from all the flaming arrows of the enemy. It says extinguishes. The flaming arrows of the enemy, uh, is the, it's the shield of faith. Faith in Jesus. Mm-hmm. Guards our guards, us from those flaming arrows. When we, when we embrace our faith, when we, when we hold that, that shield of faith in Christ and Christ alone, he extinguishes because he is greater than he has all the authority in heaven and on earth, and the sword of truth. That is the word of God again, from Genesis to Revelation. The, uh, the, the sword of the Spirit. That is the word of God. It's all about Jesus. It's not, it's not a series of, there the word is a series of stories, but the story from beginning to end is all about Jesus. It's all about God's love. And Jesus Christ is the culmination of God's love. Yeah, so every piece of the armor. Is Jesus Christ. Yeah. I love that. I don't know if that's what Paul was saying, but that's really what the spirit spoke to me. Yeah. Uh, and I, um, yeah, just wanted to share that with y'all. Uh, so the full armor of God, every piece of it. And, and Paul says, and always pray in the spirit, uh mm-hmm. And who sent us the spirit of truth? Jesus. Jesus. Yes. So, so yeah, that's the, uh, that's my take on the full armor of God. Yeah. And, uh, so good. Yeah. It's, uh, and that's, it's one of the teachings in fit to fight. Mm-hmm. Um, so moving on, uh, the heart, the heart of it all is, uh, that we, when we stand in spiritual warfare. We were able to stand in the middle of the warfare by standing under an end God's authority, and I like what I like what I hear. I haven't heard Joby Martin say anything that I didn't, I didn't line up with the word. Imagine that you're gonna bring up Joby Martin. Yeah. Pastor Joby, Martin of 1122. Uh, Church 1122 in Jacksonville. He says that, uh, you, you, you must operate under God's authority before he will have you operate in his authority. Yes. So before we, uh, before we, before he gives us his authority, we have to operate under his authority. We have to, that's, that's called obedience. Yeah. Right. So I think that's so important. It is. I mean, we can get a, we could do a whole, a whole, uh, episode on that in of itself, but I think it's so important that we are in his authority before we have authority. Absolutely. Because if we're not, if we're not operating fully under his authority, then, then we're not fully obedient. Right. And he's not gonna give us Yeah. He's not gonna give us, we, we'd abuse that authority. Just the same as we're abusing the, the grace. Right. Grace. Grace. So, um, yeah. So coming back to the authority, we, we don't fight darkness with our personality. We don't fight it with our emotions, and we certainly don't fight it with our willpower. Uh, we'll get our, we'll get our lunch handed to us if we want, if we're gonna fight this battle naturally. Yeah, because it's a supernatural battle. So we fight the battle by remembering who stands before us. Who are we following? We resist, not by fear, but by what we call our truth identity, which is who we are in Christ. We rise above the warfare by discovering our truth, identity, because we know who we are in Christ and what authority that he's given you. You know that right? You know, do you know who you are in Christ? Are you asking me or are you asking them? I know, you know, but, uh, but the enemy will have us question that. So, so the, the question is, do we believe that we are who he says we are? The great I am says that I am chosen, that I am anointed. Believe it or not, that I am patient, listener. He calls me an author. He calls, he calls me a husband. That blows my mind that he calls me a husband, that he calls me beloved. That he calls me a dad. Yeah. And that, and that the, the, the kids that he put in my life call me dad. I believe it because I've seen it in my life. Yeah. And so is the beloved Stacey Joe. He calls her Beloved too. He calls you Beloved. Yeah. And that That's be loved. Just be loved. Yeah. So do Jesus believe it? I mean, do you believe it? Yes. So when Jesus gives us authority, the enemy's only strategy is intimidation. Right? He's got nothing. He's got power. That's not, that's not diminish. I made a mistake one time once that I mocked the enemy's power and I got my lunch handed to me. Mm. And uh, so we don't wanna mock the enemy's power, but we wanna stand under and in Christ authority, the enemy can bark. He can distract, he can pressure us. He can, he can shove us around a little bit, but God, God doesn't take kindly to that guy picking on his kids. That's right. So one thing that the enemy, he can do all that. But he cannot overpower a believer who is rooted in Christ. Are you rooted in Christ Jesus Our Lord? Yeah. But you know, prayer is a major part of that. Not quick prayers, but anchored prayers. Warfare prayers. Prayers that align with your or with heaven's strength. Paul ends, you know, if you go back and you read that. The full armor of God. Um, he ends the armor list with and pray in the spirit on all occasions. And that's because prayer reinforces the armor. It clears up the fog, it breaks the heaviness. Yeah. It safeguard your mind, it restores your clarity and it. Activates the spiritual authority that Jesus has given you, but you have to receive it. Yeah. So my question to you is, do you receive it? Do you receive it? Do you receive it? Yeah. Do you receive that authority And sometimes. Sometimes before we receive it, he'll, he'll, the enemy will, he'll beat us up with a lie that we've believed most of our lives. And yeah. And, and we, as we grow closer to Christ and as our faith grows deeper, we, we have to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal that lie. Mm-hmm. So that we can release that. And make room so that we might receive what the, what the Lord has for us. Right? Yeah. That's an episode for another time. Yeah. Yeah. So that's good. Yeah. So we're, and then there's unity, and then there is unity, unity. Yeah. The enemy wants believers to be isolated. We've talked about that several times here. We've talked about it before, but spiritual battles, true believer, they're one in community. When you and your spouse are unified in prayer, the enemy loses access. Mm-hmm. When you're connected to a believing community, the enemy's lies lose leverage. Unity isn't just emotional harmony, it's spiritual protection. Yeah. When we link arms with, with the Father, Christ, the Son, the Holy Spirit, and like-minded believers, we're, we're protected spiritually. We're better together When believers cover each other and stand with each other and speak life and truth over each other, the enemy schemes fall apart. They do. They cannot stand against the authority of Christ. That's a so, you know, we'll always like to give a call to action. So here's your call to action for the week. You know, every morning, pray through the armor of God, not as a ritual, not as a, you know, just running through it, but truly pray as a real covering and say, Lord, today I put on truth, righteousness, peace. Faith. Salvation and your word. Yeah. And then take one more step. Stand in unity with someone. Yeah. If you're married, pray together. Even if it's short, it doesn't have to be some long, drawn out prayer. It can be short, you know, it can be sometimes our prayers are just two minutes. We grab hands and, and we pray for, you know. Yeah. I mean, act quickly. The, the word says, you know. Yeah. The Jesus says in the word, don't, don't bab along like the pagans do. Right. You know, if you're single, reach out to a trusted friend and pray in agreement once this week or twice or seven times. There's seven days in the week or however. Yeah. The spirit guides you. That's right. Because warfare weakens when unity strengthens. Yeah, absolutely. And remember, the enemy doesn't attack. Because you're weak. He attacks because you're advancing. That's right. He attacks because you're a powerful warrior. Yes. In the army of God, he attacks because for his kingdom. Yes. Because you're a threat. Yes. You are a threat to his kingdom. And the enemy doesn't like being threatened and, and the enemy's pressure is often proof. And I would say if, if, if you're getting, if you feel like you're getting kicked around of spiritual warfare, you're going in the right direction.'cause pressure's often proof that you are going in the right direction. That's right. So don't fear the fire because Jesus stands in it with you. True believer stand, firm stand knowing that you are covered in the blood of Jesus Christ by the blood of Jesus Christ. And if you don't know, that might sound gruesome, but as a tr, as a believer in Christ Jesus, our Lord, there is power in the blood. Amen. Yes, there is power in the but. So stand covered, stand aligned under and in his authority you are. You're not fighting for victory. Mm-hmm. You're fighting from victory. Sorry. And the battle that you're fighting, Jesus has already won. Yes. Do you believe it? I do. I do. I do. I do. But as we're wrapping this up, we wanna thank you for spending time with us. We are praying for strength over you. For clarity in your mind, for peace in your home, and for unity in your relationships. Yeah. And as always, keep your eyes on Jesus even when the fire is hot and it can get hot. Folks, we know we've, we've been there.
