Finding peace amidst chaos is not about escaping life’s noise. It’s about anchoring your heart in Jesus. In this episode of Faithfully Invested with Allen & Stacy Jo, we talk honestly about anxiety, overthinking, mental exhaustion, and how believers can walk in God’s peace even when life feels overwhelming.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why anxiety is one of the biggest battles today

Hey y'all, today we wanna start in a different place. We don't wanna start in the noise of life or in the chaos of everything that's demanding your energy, but we wanna start right here and we wanna take a deep breath and we wanna talk about peace. That's it. Take your deep breath, babe. I'm gonna take a few deep breaths. Few deep breaths. It's very advantageous. It is. You know, because peace doesn't start. When life gets quiet, peace starts when you get anchored. I'm Stacy Jo, and if you've been feeling like your mind's been racing or your heart's been heavy, or your emotions have been louder than your prayers, have you ever been there? Me then this episode's going to speak right into that place. Hey friends, I'm Allen. And as far as I can see, as far as we can see, anxiety is one of the biggest battles that we face in the world today. Uh, just the same believers are not exempt from that, that robust overconcern, right? Yeah. So, but why is it that we get tangled up in such worrisome battles? We say we believe. Mm-hmm. But do we believe we're gonna come back to that? Uh, do we not trust God entirely? Or, or is it, do we get tangled up because we live in such a, a nonsensically loud world? Uh, do we, are we allowing our circumstances to, to dictate. How we operate, uh, the world is it's constant. It's fast, it's relentless, and somewhere along the way we start believing the lie that that peace will wait. Peace will be there when our circumstances sim down Now. Sim sim down. Now, that's, uh, but that's not what the word says. Mm-hmm. In fact, the, the word who became life and dwelled amongst us, Jesus. He's, he's recorded in the gospel of John chapter 14:27. Same peace I leave with you. My peace, Jesus says, he says, my peace I give to you, not as the world. Gives it to you. So don't let your hearts be troubled, neither. Let them be afraid. Jesus is saying here that peace isn't fragile. His peace isn't fragile. His peace doesn't evaporate under pressure. His peace is not shakeable. He's he's unshakeable. He is the one. It's his peace that empowers our faith to be unshakeable. Uh. And this is the peace that he, that he provides us, uh, to his, he provide as, as his 21st century. Uh, believing disciples. He provides us just the same as he provided the peace to his first century disciples. And as he provides it, he intends us to walk in it. And you see this in, in Ephesians six when Paul, Paul says, let us shot our feet with the shoes of the gospel of peace. Right? So that's, that's, that intends us his peace. The Lord as well as his apostle, uh, Paul, that it intends for us to walk in his peace as he gives it to us, not as the world does. Yeah. You know, the challenge we're facing is simple to name, but it's sometimes difficult to navigate, you know, so how do we stand in faith when anxiety feels louder than the truth? You know, Philippians 4 tells us not to be anxious about anything, but anxiety doesn't ask for permission, and it doesn't care about, it doesn't care about forgiveness, right? Um, it sneaks in like a thief. Hmm. It's from the enemy. It sneaks in like a thief. And who's it? Starts, starts, thief. Starts a thought who's a, well, the enemy. He comes to steal, kill, and destroy. That's it. And so it's anxiety sneaks in like a thief and starts with a thought that can sometimes become a feeling. And then suddenly you're in this spiral. And I've been there. But Jesus promise it to peace. He promises peace. After all. You know he isn't He the prince of peace? He is. He is. Yeah. That's the answer. Not a rhetorical question. Yep. Not a rhetorical question. He is the prince of peace, but many believers don't know how to receive it or how to hold onto it when, when life gets heavy, and I think the whole thing comes down to what do you really believe? Babe, that's the best question any of us could ever ask ourselves. What do we really believe? Mm-hmm. Uh, what or who are we deciding for? Yeah. What, what voice are we listening to? Uh, Romans 8:6. Uh, it draws the line. Paul draws the line very clear in Romans 8:6. Uh, he says, the mind is, uh, that's governed by the flesh is death. Mm. But, but the mind governed by the Spirit Capital S Holy Spirit leads to life and peace. And the challenge isn't whether peace is available. The challenge is learning how to open our hearts, learning how to be available, learning how to open our hearts, our minds, and our lives to the Holy Spirit so he can govern our thoughts and our, the world will have, have. Anxiety and depression and, and other thoughts and emotions run rough shot over that. But when, but that, that's operating in the flesh, right? When we allow the world, the, the world to dictate our emotions and. That's not the way to go. We're not gonna find peace in that, right? But when, but when we allow the Holy Spirit to govern our hearts, our minds, and our very lives, when we're governed by the spirit, uh. Our mind will be protected. But the mind that's unprotected, uh, from Anxie, uh, that's if it's unprotected, anxiety becomes our default, or depression becomes our default or Right. Or anger and rage becomes our default. Mm-hmm. But when our mind's renewed, his peace is our initial reflex. Yeah. That's so good. How often have, you know, we let our mind be unprotected? You know, we haven't put on. The helmet of salvation, and we allow ourselves to spiral into that anxiety or into that, that. Negative, negative mindset. Yeah. The negativity. Yeah. I think, I think if, if we're gonna define it by one word, it's, it's negativity. Sure. You know, and, and negativity's easy and, uh, pessimism is easy. Right. Uh, and, and it's a mindset and we have to, the word says, um, be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Right. And, and I'll be, I'll be honest, I'm, I'm still on that journey. Uh, still allowing the Lord to, to transform me, uh, from the inside out by the renewing of my mind. Uh, because it's a struggle, right? But don't, but I mean, we're always gonna be on that journey because we are, we're, we're flesh and bone. We are. And yes, we are spiritual beings as well, but the flesh, more often than not. Will try and overtake the, the flesh does try to overtake. Right. But, and, and life governed by the flesh mm-hmm. Leads to death. So we have that decision to make. Right. So we're in a constant state of transformation. We are. Right. We are sanc. We're never going to be there until we are there. Right. The sanctification processes. Yeah. Uh, from, from the time of our decision to the time that he brings us home mm-hmm. Is, is a process. It's a lifelong process. We, we never arrive. And if you think that you've arrived, then think again. Think again. Have a different thought. Right. Have a, have another thought. Right. Uh, but, but it's, and, and it is a struggle because we are, we are fighting from victory to, to get away from the flesh. Mm-hmm. So that the, maybe not to get away from it, but to have it dealt with, the word says is to die to ourselves. Right. To die. I, I love what DeAnn Alaine says. In her. In her. Yeah. Her, um, most recognizable voice Yeah. Is die already. Right. I I'm not doing it right. But only she does it right. She can do, can do it. Only she can do it. Only she can do. But to the flesh, she says die already, right? Yeah. So, and because, and it is a stru, it wouldn't be a struggle if we weren't trying to get away from it. Right. It wouldn't be a struggle if we weren't, uh, doing. Our best to submit and surrender to the Holy Spirit's, uh, transformation of sanctification. Yeah. Uh, uh, so this, so, so it is a struggle, right? It is a struggle between flesh and spirit. Mm-hmm. Um, and. It's real for many people. Uh, but it's only a struggle if we're, if we're doing our best to get away from the flesh or to, or to die to ourselves. Mm-hmm. But so the, so the struggle, uh, is, is real for many people, uh, leaders and followers alike. Anxiety doesn't always show up in panic. Uh, it can show up in, in pressure. Mm-hmm. And it can show up. And overthinking. Ooh. Oh, no. Uh, do you do that coming from a, a, a, yes. A heinous overthinker. You're looking at him, um, or you're listening to'em. Uh, but, uh, it also, uh, might rise up and rehearsing conversations in your head. I'm sure I'm the only one that does that. Or a mad No, no, no, no. I do it too. Especially after you walk away from a conversation and you're like, oh, if I'd have just said that, I should have said that. I know. Why didn't I say that? Yeah, right. And uh, I'm going back, right. Yeah. And furthermore, right, I got one more thing to say, right? But, uh, and then there's the Holy Spirit saying, whoa, sim down now. Right? Cidel sim down now. Uh, yeah. So, so we're not the only ones rehearsing, uh, conversations in our head, uh, and or imagining the worst case scenario. I remember this from early in my recovery. There was a guy that said, um. That he, he believed that worrying works. Uh, because all the stuff he worried about never happened. So. Wow. But what, seriously, I guess that's one theory, right? Yeah. It was, it, it was a kind of a, a, a joke. Yeah. You know? Right. But it was kind, kind of funny at the time. Still is. Yeah. But, but seriously, anxiety, uh, I mean, it could even show up as a feeling like, like, we gotta hold on to everything. We gotta hold it all together, or it's all gonna come down control. Uh, and that that needs to be released. And yes, that needs to be released, but that's a podcast for another time. Right. Um, but quick question for you all. Did you know that you can be functioning at a high level but still be fighting an internal storm that nobody sees? Yeah. Yeah. Um. I do know that yes, because I have lived that. And the struggle isn't always loud though. It could be subtle. It, you know, that constant tension in your chest. Have you ever felt that or that dark heaviness that hits you the moment you wake up? Yeah, I've had that where I have woken up straight out of a dead sleep and I'm like, I forgot to do this, or I've gotta do this. Right. Or. Anything like that, but I have definitely woken up from a dead sleep with that heavy moment. Yeah. And that feeling of being rushed even when you're not late. Yeah. Anybody know that one? Because I, I feel like I'm so sometimes constantly in a rush. Right. And I, I. An example of that is, you know, I, I leave early in the morning'cause I, I go into for work, I go into Miami often. Mm-hmm. And, and I drive a little fast sometimes, but, uh, this, this particular morning that I'm speaking of, I'm, I'm on schedule. I am, I'm, I'm actually ahead of schedule and, but I, I look at my speedometer and I'm like, dude, you're not in a hurry, man. Sim down now. Sim down. Yeah. So we had to, so yeah. Rushing when we don't need to. Yeah. Uh, that's, it's, it's important to recognize that. Yeah. Or how about the scattered thoughts? You know, you got thoughts just scrambling in your head. Right. Gotta write'em down. You do gotta write up. That helps. I've gotten better at that. So there's, there's an early, an early, Hey, do this. Yeah. Uh, to help you out with that. If you've got stuff bouncing around your head. Yeah. Uh, write it down. Get, get it outta your head and write it down on paper and, uh, and then order it from there. So, moving on. Well, it, it could be irritability or that exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix. Yeah. Yeah, I, I've experienced that there. I want a real time example. I woke up with a horrible headache and I don't deal with headaches. Right. I don't, I don't have headaches, but I woke up with this headache and I had, and, and we had planned today to do so much, right. And I'm all for it. It's, we're we're recording this during the holiday season, just, just after Christmas and just before New Year's. And, but we're gonna, Hey, we're gonna do this, this, and this. And, uh, we're gonna record and then we're gonna do this, and then we can do this. And, and then, hey, Monday morning we can do this. And uh, and I woke up with this headache Yeah. Of, and I'm getting stuff ready. And I'm just saying this headache would not go away. But when, when it, when the day started to settle and when we, and when we came home, we came home from church and we rested. Mm-hmm. Because we needed to rest. Right. Because we weren't, we weren't getting anything done until we rested. And, you know, some things we don't need to be told, but that was the best thing we could have done. And that helped the headache go away. And when, when I realized that all that stuff. It's still gonna get done. It might all get done today. And that's okay. And I will say, I'm sitting here right now, it did not take any Advil. Uh, and there's no headache. Amen. Amen. So the heaviness of the day might show up like that. Yeah. And, and sometimes we have to reevaluate our day and say, Hey, this can be better appropriated mm-hmm. In another, in another man. We don't have to cram so much in one day. Right. Right. Yeah. Even though we were doing it together, we didn't have the cram so much in one day, so Yeah. You know, but anxiety in of itself can try and rewrite your identity. It tries to convince you that the, the peace. He has for you is for later. It's for when things simmer down now or when life gets easier, as Allen put it, you know, simmer down. Simmer down. But that's a lie because Jesus didn't promise peace. Eventually, nowhere does it say, I'll eventually give you peace, or maybe I'll give you peace. No, he promised it and he promised it now, right? He promised it in the moment. Right now in this very second. Right. He promises peace for those who trust in him. For those who trust in him. For those Yeah. Who trust in him. Yeah. And in his peace. Mm-hmm. And receive his peace. We, we, in order to, in order to have his peace, we have to receive that. Mm-hmm. We have to receive it and sometimes we gotta release something so that we might be able to receive something. Yeah. Have room to receive something. Right. So, I mean, most of us, and I hate to say that, but in this day, you know. Uh, Mo at least some of us, we've, we've lived so long in anxiety that it feels normal and we just say that, well, that's just how I'm wired. I'm just high strong. Yeah. I'm just high strung. Well, to, to, to you, bro. Or, or sis we'd say, simmer down now. Simmer down. But, uh, but it's not that we were not created on purpose and for purpose to be high strung or, or that's not how we're wired. Uh, that. Uh, it's more so, you know, an area it might be revealing. Mm-hmm. Something to consider. It might be revealing a, an area that God wants to heal, you know, or, or at least have you reconsider, you know, what's, what's his will, what's his way? Uh, when the mind goes unrenewed, the enemy loves to whisper lies over and around us, like fear, confusion, insecurity, pressure. Everybody, no. Under pressure going back to the eighties because Yeah, I think so. Um, but'cause the enemy knows if that, if he can. Steal our peace. He can steal our clarity. If he can steal our clarity, he can steal, he uh, he can cloud up our decisions and if he can cloud up our decisions, he can. He's got us pulled off, off track of our God-given assignment, but. Did you know that the enemy only has the power over you that you give him, right? He only, he he'll come in, he, you open the door for him, you give him a foothold, and he'll come in and he'll run rough shot over you, but he only has the power over you that you give him. Also, here's another one. Did you know that Jesus Christ has all the authority in heaven and on earth? All, all of it. All. That's, that's a big A LL. Yeah. And then Matthew, uh, Matthew 28:18 says, Jesus, uh, the father has given me all authority in heaven and on earth. Mm-hmm. And, uh, all again, Hey, did you know that Jesus is waiting for you to take up his yoke so that he can give you rest? It comes from Matthew chapter 11:28-29. He doesn't just encourage you to take a nap. Nothing wrong with naps, but that's not what Jesus is saying here. Jesus' yoke is his will, his way, and his peace that provides rest for our souls. That's not just what we're talking about. That's what he's talking about. Yeah. That's good, babe. You know, the solution begins, like you said, with receiving what Jesus already gave. He didn't say, I'll give you peace when things calm down. Like I said, he didn't say, eventually, I'll give you peace. He said, my peace I give you. Which means peace isn't earned, right? We don't have to earn peace. It's received, right? It's a gift, just like the gift of salvation. Like any gift from God, you have to receive it so that the Holy Spirit will align your heart and your mind with the the truth, the capital T truth, the JC truth, as Allen puts it right, which I love. But Philippians 4:6-7 teaches that. Peace comes through honest prayer, thanksgiving, and surrender. So when we follow suit, the peace of God guards our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. You know, Paul, like you mentioned earlier, Paul includes the shoes of peace amongst the full armor of God that he describes in Ephesians 6. So wouldn't it make sense that he wants us to walk in his peace? Wouldn't it make sense? Absolutely, baby. You nailed that one. And that's really, really well done, well spoken. Um, I know you just wanna say it, so go ahead. Not say, uh, what are you, you're probably, what are they laughing about? But, um, I know he wants to say it. He should just say it. I have to, I I, I've picked up boy, howdy. Oh, from a, oh my gosh. From, uh, it's, it's, it's a seventies thing, but, uh, anyway, uh, I think it's funny. Honey Bunny. I think it's stupid. Let us know your thoughts. It's stupid. So I would say. Your last statement deserves a boy. Howdy, boy. Howdy. You nailed it, baby. What about girl? Howdy. No. No it's not. Girl. Howdy the soda pop on cream magazine. Never said girl. Howdy. Oh my goodness, boy. Howdy. I don't even know what that is. Little silliness. It's gotta be silly, right? You gotta be so silly. We promised you that you would laugh, right? So, but when it comes to renewing of our mind, uh. Are you gonna be able to compose yourself? I'm fine. I'm fine. Actually. I'm better than fine. Good. You know, so good. But renewing our mind. Yeah. We, and when it, when it comes to renewing our mind, we can't just walk in supernatural peace with an unsubmitted thought life. You know, Romans 8:6 makes that clear that we got a yield. The spirit. That's, mm-hmm. That's the word. Uh, you know, the, that, that's a word for all of us. Yeah. And it's a word that we should, it shouldn't just be a word of the year. Uh, it, that's the word. We must yield to the spirit and allow him to govern our mind. And, uh, but, um. When anxiety rises up or, or when depression wants to lay us down, we gotta interrupt that. Mm-hmm. Uh, we don't rehearse it. We don't give it any leeway. We don't, we don't give that a foothold. Uh, we replace it and we speak God's word over it. It's called speak in life. And speak in life is more than the power of positivity. Right? It speaking God's word over you, speaking the capital T. Truth over us redirects our focus toward Jesus. Renewing our mind isn't just a one-time experience, it's a daily discipline. Oh. Wow. Not disciplined. Yeah. A daily discipline that I, I need that Stacy Jo needs that. Definitely, I think I, uh, re renewing our mind is a daily discipline that trains our thoughts. I, I believe that we all need that. We need to, to train our thoughts to agree with God's truth instead of the enemy's lies. And to that, I would say Blammo. Blammo. There you go. We have to renew our mind per the truth of God's word. Right. And you know, another part of the solution is guarding your heart. Yes. Proverbs tells us to guard it above all else, because everything flows from the heart. Guarding your heart looks like setting boundaries with media, with people, with distractions, and really with anything that triggers anxiety. Right. Some of you may feel overwhelmed, not because God isn't giving peace, but because your heart is wide open to things that rob us of peace. Mm. That could be anything. Yeah, that could be. It could be. The music you listen to could be what's gotta go. It could be the conversation, the communication you have with your spouse. It could be the communication you have with your children. It could be the inappropriate jokes that we, we, right? Or the television show you're, that you're watching. Oh, it could be anything. You know, it, it can rob us of peace. So we have to guard our hearts amidst those things that the enemy sends to steal our peace. You know what it could be, what could be the news? It could be the news. Could be the news. Absolutely. Goodness. That's a good one. Turn, turn off the tv. Yeah. You know, the Holy Spirit will guide you in what to limit, what to release and what to eliminate, because some things do need to be eliminated and that allows you to travel lighter and more peacefully for his kingdom purposes. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. For his kingdom purposes. For his kingdom purposes. And when it comes down to it, that's, that's what it's, that's what it's all about. Yeah. Uh, but as we're, as we're rolling down here, winding down here mm-hmm. The, uh, we wanna learn how to use peace as a weapon. Yes. Anxiety isn't passive, is it? It's not anxiety kicks the door and barges right in. Uh, the peace doesn't have to be passive either, right? In fact, peace is one of the nine fruits of the spirit. Check this out. Peace is one of the nine fruits of the spirit, so his peace, remember Jesus said, I give you my peace, not as the world gives it. As he gives them. Mm-hmm. His peace has authority over anxiety. Because peace isn't one of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit. His peace has authority over anxiety, peace pushes back peace, overcome fear, peace clarifies confusion. Peace calms the storm. Hello. Check out Mark 4:39. Jesus said, peace be still and the wind, and the ray and the wind and the waves obey him. Yes. Peace reminds the enemy that you are governed by the Holy Spirit, not by your circumstances. And when you decide for peace, you're deciding for spiritual authority. I love that the world relies on emotions. Mm-hmm. Uh, James says the double-minded. Mm-hmm. You know, be tossed. Tossed or unstable in all the ways we only get tossed around by the waves. Jesus said, peace be still, and those wind and waves obey them. When we decide for peace, we're decided for spiritual authority. The but the world had, have us relying on our emotions or being, or, or, Hey, just follow your heart. I was just thinking that our Yeah, just listen to your heart. Yeah. And, and, and all that stuff. That they say that, that the world says that that would keep you safe, right? Does that, does that feel safe? It doesn't often, it doesn't feel safe at all. It feels unstable, right? Uh, but believers. What do you believe? That's a question that we started with today. What do you really believe? Believers rely on Jesus Christ. And that's what makes peace powerful. Because it's his peace. Right? Receive his peace. Yeah. So here's your action item for the week. You know, we always like to give you something to walk away with, so every time anxiety rises, you know, even just a little. Pause and say, holy Spirit govern my mind. I release, and you said this earlier, holy Spirit govern my mind. I release everyone and everything to you. Yeah. And then take a few deep belly breaths and let the peace of God take the place anxiety with trying to fill and just, just to. Give honor where honors do. That's, that's not mine. That's not ours. Give everyone and everything to you. That's what John Eldridge calls benevolent detachment. Mm-hmm. And he uses that mm-hmm. Uh, on, on his podcast before he even gets his podcasts started. And I know knowing, not knowing John Eldridge, but I've read a lot of his books, so I kind of feel that we know him. Right. And, uh. But I would bet dollars to donuts that before John starts his day. It's benevolent detachment. Lord, I I thank you for this day. I release everyone and everything to you. Yeah, and it's a, it is a big deal on his Pause app actually. The Benevolent detachment is the, the crux of the Pause app to take a pause before a day gets start started. Yeah. And release everyone and everything to you. Yeah. So big shout out to John Eldridge. Thank you for. Benevolent detachment. Yeah. And the more you practice it, the more natural peace becomes, you know, it resets your rhythm. It does absolutely resets your rhythm. Um, but we wanna be, we wanna be certain that, uh, remember Christianity, you know, we're, we're not alone in this, right? So we don't ever want to do it alone. We're better together. And that sounds cliche, but hey, we're better together. We are. So talk to someone that you trust. Share where anxiety might have been trying to steal the peace. Steal your peace. Here's a, here's a maybe not a news flash. Maybe it is a newsflash, maybe you don't know, but we're not gonna manufacture our own peace. No. So the, the peace that comes from Jesus Christ is, is a fruit of the spirit. Mm-hmm. Uh, and, and the spirit gives us that peace. The spirit shows us how to instill that peace and how to embrace that peace, how to receive and embrace that peace. So. When you have that peace, when you have peace as, as Jesus and the Holy Spirit gives you peace, then that peace cannot be stolen. Right? So, and, and that peace allows us to grow stronger in community.'cause like we said, we're, we're always better together. We were never meant to fight our battles alone. We're never meant to go this uh, alone. So Jesus gave us his peace for a reason so that we could live anchored, we could be steady, we could be unshakeable no matter what's happening around us. And I don't know if y'all notice, but it's a little crazy outside those doors. The world's a little nuts these days. So now more than ever, we need his peace as he offers it. We sure do. You know, we just, as we're wrapping up today, we wanna thank you for joining us and we pray that this week the peace of God meets you in every place anxiety has tried to live. We pray that your heart would be guarded and your mind renewed, and that your spirit would be anchored in Christ. Amen. And remember, friends one, thanks for tuning in.
