In this episode of Faithfully Invested, Allen & Stacy Jo tackle a question that can make believers uncomfortable—in the best way:

Are you treating what God gave you as seed… or as security?

We’re continuing the generosity conversation, but not the “safe” kind. We’re talking about sowing with faith, not fear, and confronting the ways generosity gets distorted into:

  • Transactional giving (“If I give, God owes me.”)
  • Prosperity confusion (blessing = money every time)
  • Fear-based hoarding dressed up as wisdom

This episode is rooted in Scripture and real-life obedience—because seed was never meant to stay in your hand.

📖 Scripture Referenced:

  • Proverbs 3:5–10
  • Proverbs 11:24–25
  • 2 Corinthians 9:6–11
  • Luke 6:38
  • Romans 8 (conviction, not condemnation)

Key Takeaway:
 In God’s economy, generosity isn’t loss—it’s alignment.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where are you self-protecting from loss instead of sowing?
  • What generosity has God been nudging you toward—but you’re waiting until it feels “safe”?
  • What seed has God placed in your hand that you’ve been treating like security?

If this episode spoke to you, share it with a friend and leave a 5-star review so more people can find biblical truth that transforms.

When you are faithfully invested, God brings the increase.

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (00:01.038)
Hello and welcome back to Faithfully Invested. It is with truly grateful hearts that we welcome you back here with us again. I'm Allen And I'm not. She's not. I'm not. But you know, he's the one who always says that. So I just figured I would make it clear that I'm not Allen. I am Stacy Jo. She is.

Anyhow, what we talking about today? Well, today our trend is going to continue and we might step on a few toes, but know this, that if it feels like your toes are being trampled, we mean it from conviction, not condemnation, because you know there is no condemnation for those who are found in Christ Jesus, right? That's what Paul wrote. That's right. That's right. I love that.

Probably my favorite chapter in the Bible until I find a new favorite, Romans 8. I love Romans 8. It's a good one. Anyway, so we get it. If your toes feel trampled on, then just know that ours were trampled on first because we're just here to share our faith journey experiences.

with you so we can all learn together along our journey on how God wants us to lead our lives by His principles and precepts from His word, by His truth together. Because that's how it's done. Leading from truth. So today's episode is entitled Seed or Security. And if that title makes you a little uncomfortable, that's a good thing.

because it's all right to be uncomfortable as we take his joke upon us and we learn from him. So stick with us here today because the takeaways are gonna be good. They are definitely gonna be some good takeaways. Today we're discussing generosity, your favorite. Still discussing generosity because that's what this season is all about. Absolutely.

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (02:16.141)
But we're not talking about the kind of generosity that feels safe. We're not talking about the kind of generosity that your accountant may be comfortable with. We're talking about sowing with faith, not fear. Yeah, and here's a ruthless truth that we're gonna unpack today. If you only give when it feels safe, you're not really sowing. You're kind of guarding against

potential losses. And understand that obedience to the Holy Spirit does not lead to destitution. It actually leads to resolution. That's good, babe. Not destitution, but resolution. Resolution. Well done. But even as we're reluctant, even as you're reluctant to release control and follow, we get it.

You know, we really do get it because we've both had seasons where our generosity was more like spiritual risk management. know, like, dear Lord, I trust you, but can we make sure the savings accounts comfortable? Yeah, come on, man. Do we trust him or do we trust him? Yes, I want to be the one who trusts him, not just trust him.

I just trust him. got to trust him. Seriously, you know, all goofy banter aside, we we got to trust the Lord with all of our hearts, minds and strength. So today we're going to dive into and confront transactional giving.

prosperity confusion because there's a lot of that out there. And even the fear-based hoarding that sometimes can disguise itself as wisdom. Yeah, hoarding's definitely not wisdom. We'll get to that. And to all that, I would say zing. Zing? Zing. It's gonna be a hot one, folks.

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (04:29.836)
Buckle up, let's go. We're getting into seed or security. Right. So the tension here is whether we give as a seed to be planted or do we give as insurance to secure ourselves? And somewhere along the way, know, generosity got distorted and it became

a prosperity theology where if I give, you know, if I give God owes me and for others, it became a fear based caution. Like I have to be careful. I have to protect. I have to preserve just in case, just in case. Yeah. Just in case what?

Well, maybe just in case God isn't Jireh, Jehovah Jireh. Just in case. And again, I would say just in case what God is wrong. I mean, that hurt me to even say that because we've experienced his generosity that allows us to be generous as we continue to mature in our faith. So I got a just in case for you.

What about just in case our security is actually found in God alone, then as our security is found in God, then maybe we ought to ask His Spirit and prompt us, what's His Spirit say to us? And whatever the Spirit says, as we find our security solely in our Creator, Father God, let's follow that lead.

And I'm just gonna be forward here. I know that's shocking to some of you people. But when it comes to giving from God's resources, which like we've discussed in previous episodes, God's resources, it's everything that we have, everything that we see has come from the Lord. Everything we have comes from the Lord. So knowing that, believing that, do you believe that?

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (06:39.106)
But believing that, the question, if I give too much, will I still feel secure? That should never exit our faces. Seriously. Not just your mouth, but your face. Right, should never exit your face. Just take a look at Solomon. In his day, he had it going on. Yes, he was absolutely loaded. And also, yes, he was substantially sketchy through his mostly charmed life.

I mean, this dude, when the Lord asked him what he wanted, he prayed for wisdom. But I digress, anyway. Solomon, my point is, he famously tells us in Proverbs 3, and I take this a little, usually it's Proverbs 3:5-6 I'm gonna take it to Proverbs 3:5 all the way to verse 10, where he says, trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (07:36.852)
on your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your path straight. He will make your paths straight. Be not wise in your own eyes, excuse me, fear the Lord and turn away from evil and it will be healing for your flesh and refreshment to your bones. Honor the Lord with your wealth and with.

the first fruits of all your produce, then your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will be bursting with wine. I love that scripture too, but did you know that scripture never calls money security? It calls it a seed. Yeah. And when he talks about a seed, he's implying trust.

He's implying waiting. It's implied that you let go of something valuable and believe that God will do something incredible with it. If I hold a seed in my hand, and God's talked to me about seeds for the last, I don't know, the last several months. And if you don't let go of that seed, nothing's gonna grow. That seed's gonna dry up and...

it's not going to produce anything. And a seed is meant to produce. A seed is meant to be planted so that it can flourish. There it is. There it is. We're going to elaborate on that here a later on. That's a good word, So the difference is security wants control. control. we like control. But newsflash.

Any control you think you have on your own life, it's illusory. Illusory control, it's an illusion. It's an illusion. God's in control all day, every day, but security wants control while seed requires surrender. Yeah. And we've lived through this tension. I mean, there were seasons when giving felt safe for us, and then there were...

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (09:50.93)
seasons where it didn't there were seasons where the margins were wide and numbers looked comfortable and and then there were seasons where in obedience You know when God was calling us to be obedient and it really stretched our faith. Yeah Like it should I mean faithful generosity Isn't always convenient and it doesn't always make sense. Yeah, but at the end of the day, it's all God's anyways, right? Absolutely, and I can

generosity. I elaborate. Yes, I want to elaborate on this with actually is a fairly recent story. We were we were out of time enjoying some time together and we're having a dinner together and and just blatantly.

And a lot of people at this point say almost audibly. But it wasn't almost audibly, but it was in a Holy Spirit unction. You need to give this much in the Spirit specific to this person. And you need to do this now. I'm like, and we've gotten to a point, I'm like.

That much? And all transparency, so I'm like, all right. Because I knew that thought wasn't from me, that it was from the Spirit, and the Spirit doesn't, and what the Word says is the Spirit doesn't speak of His, on His own, whatever He gets, He's gotten it from Christ, He's gotten it from the Father. so this is what God wanted in that moment.

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (11:37.226)
Never regret. There's no regret in obedience. No regret in obedience. And it doesn't make sense. it didn't make sense then and it didn't make sense. It just, whenever I'm prompted, doesn't, it usually doesn't make sense. Because I know where, I know where our

my account numbers are, account numbers are, and I was like, really? And he's like, that's what I said. I was like, all right. And he's always right, period. And he's always in control. And the freedom in releasing that control is, for lack of a better term, heavenly. Yeah, but you know, the enemy.

that he'll throw in fears that whisper like, oh no, don't do that. What if something happens? And that was there, don't do that. Don't do that. But what if the business slows down? What if this, what if that, what if you need that later? All the what ifs. Yeah, the what ifs. We learned a long time ago, because we're recovery people, the what ifs will...

the what ifs will hold you back. We don't go on what ifs, we go on God said. But it's the typical questioning from the enemy, did God really say to give that much?

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (13:18.58)
Fear. Fear calls hoarding wisdom. there's no wisdom found in hoarding. right. But I mean, don't get us wrong. We believe that planning and proper stewardship are totally biblical. We don't disagree with that. But we're saying sometimes he calls us to do things that are out of the comfort zone. And...

hoarding, like Allen said, is rooted in fear. It's not rooted in wisdom. It's the lack of trust. And oftentimes it'll look like anxiety. Fear, know, direct, dressed up in a spreadsheet. Because you know, the ideal with spreadsheets a lot. But y'all know the difference between stewardship and stewardship and self protection, right? I mean, it really all comes back to trust.

And where does our trust reside? In the account or in the Creator Father God? I like to say that my trust always comes back to the Creator Father God, but if I am going to be completely transparent with you, I'm going to say that sometimes I put more trust in the account and I have to be reminded

Briefly yeah briefly, you know, and we are just simple humans, right? So that's and I'm not advocating one of the other but I'm saying that briefly we don't we don't There's conviction there right and because he when the enemy comes and says did he really say he the Father or or the spirits not too far behind and say yep. That's what I really said

moving forward. And I was going to say that, you know, I am quickly convicted by that when I really asked the Lord about it. And then

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (15:21.39)
you know, we have to move forward with the obedience because, know, someone's blessing is on the other side of our obedience. Right. And you've come and you've come to me, you know, and I got to appreciate a woman who honors honors her husband's opinion. And then you've come to me and moments like that, with whether it be over finances, or whether it be over time, or this that or the other. And you're in your what do you say? I was like, Well, you know, if

If that's what God said, I have no say. I appreciate you asking me. But if you're certain, sure, if you're certain, that's the way the Spirit's leading you, then I have no say. We'll come together on it, we'll move forward, and that is how we're joined together in following. Because we gotta follow Him.

before we can ever lead anyone. That one's for free. So sometimes...

Sometimes we've subtly given transactionally, and that might sound something like, Lord, we're sowing this, but now we're expecting you to handle that. So yeah, that also bears traces of contractual doubt. It kind of sounds like, there's a little bit of doubt in there somewhere. That's not seed, that's a contract. And I wonder, do you know that

God doesn't invite us into a contract for him, he invites us into a covenant with him. that's good. Yeah. I mean, seriously, we don't have to look too far to find solid biblical truth to support this. For now, let's just stick with Solomon. His wisdom literature is hot stuff concerning this topic. Proverbs chapter 11.

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (17:26.606)
24 and 25 recognizes one gives freely yet grows all the richer. Another withholds what he should give and only suffers want. Whoever brings a blessing will be enriched and the one who waters will himself be watered. That is, we've said it time and time again, faith don't make sense. If you're waiting for it to make sense,

please don't hold your breath. This is the paradox. This is how God works in mysterious ways, right? That's odd paradox by worldly standards, but we found it to be the absolute truth. Way back in the day, in Solomon's day, God let his economy be known that open hands increase while clenched fists.

Diminish. All right. And the same God-given financial principles are true today. Yeah. And so I like that we're really deep in Scripture today. So let's keep the points anchored in the scriptural truth. know, 2 Corinthians 9: 6-11 11 says, the point is this, whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

Each one must give as he's decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written, he has distributed freely, he has given to the poor, his righteousness endures forever.

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You'll be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. Blammo!

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (19:43.151)
Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, Bob. Tell the lady what she's won. That is an excellent biblical reference. But notice what it doesn't say. It does not say give and God will make you richer. It says God supply seed to the sower. Are you catching that?

God supply seed to the sower. Seed is meant to leave your hand. You mentioned it earlier, if seed's in your hand, it's not grown anywhere. It needs good soil, it needs to be watered, it needs to, but first, before it gets any of that, it needs to be released.

Seed is meant to leave your hand. Bread is for eating, seed is for sowing, and if we're fearfully eating the seed, then we're diminishing the harvest that God wants to grow. That's His intention, Yeah, mean, that and we're never gonna be full. You think about a little seed and what one seed can do and how it can create the wheat, all the wheat to make bread.

Right. The bread that's intended for eating. Right. But if we ate that tiny seed, are you going to be full? No. No. But if you eat, but if you release it and grow the weeds, you grow the wheat, the bread, make the bread. Oh, tummy full. Right. You're going to be full. But you know, check out his promise. He says you will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way. And who's doing the enriching? It's not

you, it's not me, it's not you as the listener. mean, God does the enriching so that we may be generous in every way. Friends, we're not enriched to hoard and we're not enriched to upgrade endlessly. He enriches our supply. He enriches our supply so that we may continue participating in His economy.

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (21:50.593)
And that reframes everything. When we start thinking, looking at it from his economy instead of our economy, a kingdom economy instead of our personal economy, then generosity is an insurance. It's participation in his plan that is always higher and greater than our own. Always. I mean, my plan is nothing compared to his. And he invites us when we're willing into his grace circulation.

You know, it's just, that's totally awesome. It is totally awesome. I'm all about grace circulation. Right? Great circulation too, but grace circulation is even better. absolutely. So far, we've heard from Solomon, we've heard from the incomparable apostle Paul, but speaking of incomparable.

No one compares to Jesus. What does he have to say on this subject? Would you believe that the whole giving principle sounds the same through the words of our Savior King? Who would have thunk it? Who would have thought it? Thunk, thought, you know. Jesus declares in Luke 6:38, give and it will be given to you. Good measure, press down.

Shaken together running over will be put in your lap. I love that for with the measure You use it It will be measured back to you. See he doesn't say keep it. He says use it Jesus says use it

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (23:42.287)
We're not holding on to it. He calls us to use it. We hope that this is landing well with you all because this is how it's done faithfully. This is how sowing seed is done faithfully. We're given so that we can use what is given so that we may be given more to use as he guides us.

through his economy. We can't sow. We cannot sow fear and reap faith. We cannot sow scarcity and reap abundance of spirit or anything else. I'm gonna give you a blamo on that one because that's so on point. Give it to me. Blamo.

Fear and faith, you can't expect to sow fear and reap faith because fear and faith can't reside together, right? And just to be clear, this principle that we're talking about today doesn't just apply, I mean, we're talking about it from a financial standpoint, but it goes beyond financial application. I mean, we can sow encouragement, we can sow forgiveness, we can sow time, we can sow prayer, we can sow, you name it.

acceptance, mean, many different things. We can sow all of those things. And they're both going to reap a harvest. They're all going to reap a harvest. Let's just, just a little bit off topic here, but just for some clarity, if you're a new listener, or if you're checking us out on YouTube and you're new, within the last couple of weeks,

The name of the podcast is Faithfully Invested, but we don't always just talk about money. And if you've just come aboard, if you've just discovered this podcast over the last couple of weeks, that's all you've heard us talk about is financial biblical truth. But we talk about marriage, and life. How to do life, how to faithfully invest our whole lives, not just our finances.

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (25:59.983)
but how to be faithfully invested in every part of our life per biblical truth. So just wanted to be clear about that. If you're new, we're not always just talking about how to be good stewards. That's it. good stewards in all things, not just in finances. absolutely. So I'm glad you clarified that, babe, because yeah, somebody might think from the name.

It's money again. They're always talking about money. They're always talking about money. we're not. not. when we are, we're talking about biblical truth. I was the naysayer of all naysayers. And we talked about this one or two episodes ago. But when I came to discover, and I'm still discovering, how the Lord's economy, how God's economy works,

from all the way back in Proverbs and before, then that's how it's done. That's how we wanna operate. But anyway, just wanted to clarify that for you. Moving on. So just a question. What are we planting with the lives that we've been given?

That's question right there. What are you planting? What are you sowing? What seed are you sowing with the lives that you've been given? Because the truth is, we're all sowing something. Are we sowing fear? Or are we sowing faith? Are we operating from a lie? Or are we operating from a truth? And there's a podcast for another time. Well, I want to sow faith. I want to sow encouragement.

I want to sow hope into our listeners and to the people around us. And I know you want to do the same. All the rest of my days. Yeah. So, but as we're winding down here today, we're going to quickly confront three distorted beliefs. is a reiteration. Our first distorted belief is transactional giving.

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (28:12.63)
If I give, God owes me. That even sounds funny, I'm sorry. Let's see if I can do it in like, if I give, the big guy owes me. that's horrible denier. But anyway, are you talking to me? Anyway, like we mentioned earlier, God owes us nothing.

He is not a slot machine bumping out blessings. He's I said last year he wasn't a vending machine, I think is what I said. He's not a vending machine.

a Yeah, yeah. Put in a quarter out pops a blessing. He's not a slot machine either. He's not about he's not pumping out blessings. he is pumping up. I was I was getting ready to correct myself. But she's quick at that. I am because I know I know. I've seen how he's blessed. He is pumping out blessings when we decide to have it. Yahweh.

Not have it your way, not have it Allen's way, not have it Stacy's way, but we want to have it Yahweh. That's it. but believe this, we don't want what we're owed. So while this truth that God owes us nothing, while this is landing on your heart, I want to take a moment and thank him for his mercy, which is not giving us what

we actually do deserve. And after that, we want to take a moment and just be so grateful. And we want to thank him for his grace, which is giving us what we don't deserve. And to that, I would say amen and pass the sweet potatoes. I don't have any sweet potatoes to pass. love sweet potatoes. Well, that's great, babe. All you out there, you love sweet potatoes. Anyhow.

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (30:19.702)
The next one is prosperity confusion. know, God's blessing isn't always financial increase. Sometimes it's peace, sometimes it's joy, sometimes it's always grace, you know, sometimes it's character. Sometimes it's wisdom. It's contentment, wisdom, you know. His blessing is...

not always financial increase when you give because again, we're not just talking about financial giving. Right. And then third would be the fear based hoarding that we talked about, you know, if I release this, if I release this, it's I won't be safe, you know, comes back to the eye. And that one cuts deep because safety has quietly replaced sovereignty.

and I would say in many hearts and Jesus never said store up treasure so you can feel secure here on earth, right? He said store up treasures in heaven where Maz and vermin cannot destroy because the enemy can destroy anything here on this earth. Yeah. So you don't need to store up treasures to feel secure. I'm not

I'm not even gonna go there. yeah. We're classifying the enemy as vermin, right? Yes. Right. Because he's like the chief destroyer. Right. Right. Okay. Cool. Cool with that. So as we wind down here, we got a few questions that we'd like to leave you with. Where in your life are you?

are you self-sufficiently protecting from potential loss instead of sowing? So let me say that slower. And if you're driving, don't write this down. Where in your life are you self-sufficiently protecting from potential loss instead of sowing? All right.

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (32:28.94)
Yeah, is there generosity that God's been nudging you toward, but you're waiting until it feels safe to do it? Because that may never come. Yeah. And remember, blessing is on the other side of obedience. So when you're obedient, you're blessing someone else.

Absolutely. Or maybe it's God's blessing on you. But either way, there's a blessing there somewhere. Right. Yeah. And if we're not, our yes is always going to bless someone else, you know, eventually on down the line. You you mentioned safety, you know, if we're waiting on it to feel completely safe, then it probably, I'm just going to get rid of the probably.

If we're on it to feel safe, it doesn't require faith. You know, we're called to walk in faith. Yeah. Called to walk in faith. Now we're not talking about reckless giving. I we're talking about spirit led generosity. The kind that says, Lord, you you are my security, not this account, not this checking account, not the savings account, not this asset, not this comfy financial pillow that I've got, but you, Lord.

So help me trust you more. Help me trust you more right here in this space. Right here. Right here, right now. this space. Help me trust, show me how to trust you more, Lord. So ask him this week, Father, what seed have you placed in my hand that you are, that I've been treating like security?

What seed has he placed in your hand? Ask him. He'll tell you. And then if you're willing to listen, then he'll tell you where he wants you to put it. So. And then when he speaks, respond to that. I mean, not because you're going to earn.

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (34:32.266)
anything from him and not to manipulate him, but and not even to guarantee and any sort of outcome, but just to participate with him. Right. And what he wants to do. Yeah, it's cute that we would think that. mean, there's people out there think they're manipulating God is cute. It's kind of kind of cute. It's sad, but, you know, cute. in there, but in the mind, you can think you're manipulating, you know, back to the if I give this

you're gonna give me that. Right, but that's not how he works. And that's our point. that's my point. For us, it's just finite creations to think that we can manipulate him is one to think that we're in control and he's not. Correct. That's not the truth. Anyway. Because in God's economy, generosity...

is never a loss. It's not a loss. It's alignment. Right. It's alignment. And when we sow in faith instead of fear, we reflect the heart of Jesus. And remember, let's remember this week, one day at a time, that he never withheld his love. Jesus. Right. mean, Jesus...

is the culmination of God's love and God, never without His love, He poured it out. Jesus never calculated the cost of the cross. He surrendered to it because that was the Father's plan. through the Gospels, all through the Gospels, He said, I don't do anything the Father didn't tell me to do. He did everything per the Father's plan. He surrendered to the cross for you.

for me because that was God's plan. And the culmination of that plan is His grace for us so that we can freely walk in that grace. So we can walk in the freedom that He has given us. So let's be people who sow. Let's be people who trust. Let's be people

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (36:50.498)
who live faith forward, not fear first. Will you embrace his forward-facing freedom?

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (37:01.848)
But that's it. Will you embrace his forward-facing freedom? We hope and pray that you will, because that is what it means to be faithfully invested, not just with our money, but with our entire lives. Right. Yeah, I wanna go back real quick. I love what you said about being

people who live faith forward and not fear first. So on top of, you know, the question, are you going to embrace His forward-facing freedom? Examine whether you are living faith forward or if you're living fear first. Because we love you and we are praying for you and

we know that God has great things for you. And I don't say that from a prosperity standpoint, but I say that from the promise standpoint, the promises that he has given us, the promises that he has given each of you through his word. anyhow. Right, and this is, but I'm just really prompted here.

Stacy Jo and we say this all the time that we love you and maybe there's someone out there like what do mean? You'd love me. You don't even know me and that but but we love you and I remember This guy I had met a couple of times in church a wonderful Wonderful man wonderful person just like the third time I'd ever

He was over in front of me. He just gives me this hug and says, love you, man. But that's the love of Christ. And we don't just say, we're not here to butter your bread. We're not here to just schmooze. When we say we love you, we love because we have been loved first. Because he loves us. As you said that, I just thought how awkward that was for me.

Allen & Stacy Jo Thorne (39:15.136)
And some time ago, but he said that because he was loved first. And we say that because we love because we were first loved by him. And we just wanna say we love you. And he loves you emphatically more and he wants the best for you. And that's why he gave us his playbook to go by his truth. And what we've discovered,

in our faith walk over, I'm just gonna, around number 15 years, in the last 15 years, we've discovered that every word in the Bible, in God's word, is absolute truth. And we had to experience it.

Not because we just read it and we did a Bible plan in one year or we did this, that, or the other. It's not just because we read the Word.
