Questions? Fun God stories? Let us know!

In John 17, Jesus asks the Father to keep us in the world, not remove us from it. That means life with God is not a strategy for escape but a way to flourish in a chaotic age. At the center is oneness: “I in them and You in Me.” Eternal life isn’t just endless time; it’s the quality of life that flows from knowing God right now. We talk about learning to say amen to Jesus’ prayer instead of trying to manufacture unity or joy, and how “Christ in you, the hope of glory” becomes the wellspring of transformation, courage, and holiness.

We lean into a bold line many avoid: “The glory You have given Me I have given to them.” What does it mean to receive shared glory without pride? We unpack how partnership with God changes the way we respond when He moves through us—no self-erasure, no ego—just gratitude for inclusion. Along the way, we point to creation’s design, from galaxies to atoms, as a living metaphor of Christ at the centre holding all things together… and holding you together.

Welcome And Upcoming Break

SPEAKER_05

Welcome to the Hearing God Podcast. I'm Anthony Moore. And I'm Dan Lamus. For over a decade, Anthony and I have been diving deep into weekly conversations about the prophetic, the mystical, and the matters of the heart.

SPEAKER_01

And we invite you into these weekly conversations. We hope you feel like an honored guest at our table.

SPEAKER_05

So pull up a chair, settle in, and let's get started.

SPEAKER_02

Well, here we are. Here we are. Good. Here we here we are. Once again, here we are once again. Yep. How's it going, Dan? It's going well. It truly is going well. Yeah. Um great.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe, maybe just uh just give people like we're we've got uh this episode and then maybe one more, and then we're gonna take a little bit of a break. Yep. Uh Dan's got a little bit of some surgery that he has to get taken care of. Yeah. So it's gonna be out of commission for a little while. Yep. So uh I think the plan is for us to have a podcast this week and then next week, and then we're probably going to just take a break until the new year. Yes, that's right. And then just jump jump back in. Yep. But as you were, Dan. Yeah. Uh how's it going?

Joy As Gift Not Wage

SPEAKER_05

Things are things are going well. Things are good. Things are going, yeah. Yeah, I uh feeling good. Um just uh this morning earlier was uh just being reminded by uh just kind of going over uh an earlier journal entry from just earlier this year, just talking about uh joy and how uh joy is not uh something that we earn or a luxury, yeah. Uh but it's actually um it's actually so necessary to our life. And man, I just feel like if there's one big lesson I'm learning in my life these days, and it's been an ongoing one for a while, is not having to earn the things that are the most important to us. Like God just provides the most essential things to us in order that we can live as his kids. It's not uh, you know, if you can prove yourself uh uh worthy, I will bless you with joy and those kinds of things. So anyway, just revisiting that this day.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's so good.

Peace That Displaces Inner Swirl

SPEAKER_01

Grateful for it. Yeah, the I mean again, like just the reminder that okay, so the important things in life are like of which joy is one of them, right? Things that are really meaningful, um, are actually fruit of you know, connection with the Lord. Yes, right, yeah, absolutely, that's right. The fruit of the Holy Spirit's presence in our lives and in our being, really. Um, but yeah, like just to re recognize that it's not a it's not a question of uh like it's not a question of worthiness worthiness or deserving. Like he's answered the question of worthiness, uh whether or not we are worthy, and it's not about earning either. It's really just comes from and I I was I was thinking that today, you know, I've been going through these, I've just been finding some uh I don't even know what I would call it, but um because I'm so I'm such an introspective person, I can get caught in the swirl of I can caught get my caught in my own head quite frequently. Yeah. And I have been realizing, I just I think last night I was sort of sort of taking stock stock of like it kind of has nothing to do with any given circumstance. I can you could say, well, I can just get caught in my head about anything, yeah. Not necessarily how things are going right now. I completely understand like quite literally, it things could be going pretty well, and I could still get stuck in my own head. Uh and so yeah, so I was just like working through that, you know, a little bit with the Lord last night. Um, and then you know, my wife, as she often does, comes and helps me snap out of it. Yes. Yes. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you. I also understand that and relate to it. Yeah. And uh just was really thinking about like sometimes it isn't really what you know what's going on in your life, it's something else. It's like the it's how it's how you process the world. Yeah, that's what I was gonna say.

SPEAKER_02

It's how you're what you're what you're doing with it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's what you're doing with it that causes, at least causes me to get a little stuck in my own head. But yeah this morning I'm I'm doing a little better. Yeah, uh, and I'm also just thankful for I'm thankful for, I'm just being reminded, right, again, of the fruit of the spirit that I don't have to try to be joyful. I mean, again, again, the best thing I can do so that I can be joyful is actually be with the Lord. So and again, I feel like that is a that's just that's easier said than done at times. But when I when I carve out the time, again, carve out the time to just be with the Lord, there is a peace that comes that or or a s yeah, I would call it peace, but that it that it opens the door for joy, I would say. If that's that's good, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

It does make sense.

SPEAKER_01

It's like sort of suddenly the whatever the angst of whatever swirly thing you were stewing on sort of goes away. Yeah, and then all of a sudden then I am at peace, and therefore it seems like peace is the thing that sort of displaces at least. I don't know. I I'm not trying to make a theological statement here, I'm just telling you what my experience was. That peace when peace comes, it actually paves the way for like it sets all that quiet, it makes all that quiet quiets all that noise. Yes, and then moves to just it just opens the door for like, oh hey, it isn't just like that everything is at peace. Now it can be like actually a little more up and to the right, like it can actually like enjoy things or yes, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And I think a couple of episodes ago we talked about his presence makes all the difference. I think his he is the god of peace, and it and it's the kind of peace that actually transforms things, yes, and I love that. Yeah, it's not uh it's not shove stuff aside, shove stuff down, ignore stuff. It's actually Jesus' peace, is there's nothing going on here we can't handle together. Yeah. So trust me, my son, trust me, we've got this. That's different kind of peace. It's not it is, yeah, he doesn't ignore the thing that we're pointing out. Yeah, he puts it in perspective, and I love that.

Turning To John 17

SPEAKER_01

I yeah, it's really just like it's just uh, you know, it's just like the power, the power of the presence of Jesus. Like the power, like it's not just, and I'm not talking about like some sort of like ethereal thing here or some sort of metaphysical thing. It's like when Jesus walks into the room, when he walks, when his when he comes and is present and you're aware of him, yes, the all the dysfunctional stuff gets displaced. Yes. And that's yeah, that's kinda that's just the that's just what happens. Yeah, right. And so that's really, you know, I'm really thankful for I'm thankful that I don't have to like try hard. You know what I'm saying? Like I don't there's not like a like it's just invite Jesus, just and and if there's a try, if there's a striving, maybe it's like this like what is that scripture verse from Hebrews about strike if you're gonna strive, strive to enter rest, right? Yeah, right. So it's like every effort to enter into yeah. So it's kind of like that. Like there is a little bit of a like, oh, I don't feel like doing this. I have to get over myself, and just like yeah, a little bit of that. But then when you do, and when you quiet yourself, you're like, okay, I give up. I'm give up trying to fix myself, just it give up and say, Jesus, would you come? I just um and then he's he's really faithful. Yes, absolutely. He's really faithful the more that I just consistently like every time that I posture my heart towards him, yeah. He just he just is there, yeah. And so just yeah, I don't yeah, this really good, really, really good good stuff. Um so today, Dan, uh I thought we would chat through uh John 17. Yeah, and I'll just hit a couple things there. Um, it is in my opinion, I know you know, based on our conversations over the years, it might be your favorite chapter in the whole Bible. Uh possible. Given given the I mean, there's a there's a few in the sort of like the pantheon of you know, your top five that are in this, this would for sure be there, but probably my guess would be it'd be might be your favorite in the whole Bible. Uh Jesus high priestly prayer, where there's a bunch of things that happen there where he's praying for his disciples, he's praying for you and I. Yes. Uh, he's he and he's making some pretty outrageous, like outrageous requests, so that you know, if it was like, this is probably pretty wild. Uh like I can't wrap my mind around the kinds of things that you're praying, Jesus. Right. Uh, but it was Jesus, so then it must be legit, right? Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

So so yeah, the the whole concept of Jesus praying, that that is worth contemplating for anyone. Yeah. The fact that Jesus is praying, yeah, and who does he pray to?

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_05

Jesus is praying to the Father. They're having this incredible sacred conversation about, frankly, quite mysterious things.

SPEAKER_03

Absolutely.

Why This Prayer Window Matters

SPEAKER_01

And I think just like just like, and we we I think I just before we jump into this, like, or as we're jumping into this, would like to highlight the fact that we don't get a whole lot of insight into the kinds of things that Jesus prayed for. Right. Right. Yeah. And this would be, I think, I think I'm not wrong in saying this, this would be the largest snapshot we get into the kinds of things that Jesus prayed for. That's right. Right. So we we get we get uh Gethsemane, where you know, uh we get, you know, you know, uh why is this escaping me? Like if this cup, like if this be your will, let this cup pass from me, but not my will, yours be done. Right. So that's right, kind of, but that's like a few lines, right? Yeah, we get a little bit of a snapshot, like Hebrews 5, 12, 12, uh, sorry, 5.7, where it says, in the days of his flesh, you know, he made his request known with loud cries and tears, right? So yeah, so there was uh there was some idea um about and you get a little bit, Father. I thank you that you've hidden these things from you get a little bit like a little bit of a line, but this is a this is a whole chapter essentially, right? Um maybe some descriptors at the beginning and the end, I can't remember, but this whole thing is a whole chapter of Jesus praying to the Father about some things, and I thought this is like at a pinnacle moment like this. Absolutely, because it goes from there to like we get to arrest right, he's arrested and crucified, dies, yeah, yeah, you know all that stuff. Yeah, so so I thought that that's at least like highlighting the fact that this is the per perhaps the most most in-depth window of like Jesus talking to the Father. And the cool thing is, I mean, there's a bunch of cool things in there. We we'll get to that, but I just thought that this is this is not a small, this is not a small thing. This is this is a very pivotal chapter agreed in the in the whole in the entirety of the Bible, perhaps.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's wow, it's I mean, it's pretty epic. Jesus closest, you know, some people would call Jesus' best friend, you know, John.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, the one who ran faster than Peter.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, like that John wrote this, yes. Um, and and the kinds of things Jesus prays into and uh incredible compassionate heart of Jesus taking such ownership for his disciples, and then all of us who would believe down through the centuries and millennia taking such ownership of us before the father. Yes. Like like you know that we that we mean so much to the father already, but Jesus is coming and saying, I am like I am these I'm coming to you, Father, because these ones mean so much to me.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_05

And so here's what I need you to do to make sure they're all set and they're okay and they're going to thrive, you know. Yeah, it's an amazing uh chapter.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because I say that you you're saying that too, right? This is evidenced. Uh this is evidenced because I was reading that. I I noticed that I'd I'm probably gonna escape it, but uh I'm not like trying to find the exact phrasing here. But there is a little bit of an echo of like John 14 where he says, you know, uh, you know in the pre in the you know, but right before he says, I'm the way, the truth, and life, you know, there's the you know, in my father's house are many rooms or many mansions. And if it were not good, if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go to prepare a place for you, then I'll come again and take you with me. Right. So that here's the and here's the heart of it, so that where I am, you may be also. Yes, yeah. And and in that like in you hear that again, hear that again in John 17, yes, as he's praying. Right. It's that so that like so that we can be together. This is the heart, this is the heart of Jesus. Yeah, and it's not so that um it was it's like so that you can be with me. Yes. I want, I want you. This is the whole thing, yeah. Right. This is the perhaps the root, like a uh uh an honest expression of my love for humanity, that all who believe in me, the ones who say yes, the ones who love me, can be with me forever. Yes, yep. And to me, I think that's just like it's just this echo again, yeah, of that whole um discourse in John 14.

SPEAKER_05

This is what deeply matters to Jesus and to the Father. Right.

SPEAKER_01

It's the connection, it's the that where you like that you that you're not anywhere else but with me. Yeah, right. And that's so that we're we're together. And that amazing. And it's it's like eternal, right? So it's not uh, you know, uh, it's not temporary, it's forever. Yeah, and that's just the beauty. That's like the that does my heart so good. It it does my heart so good sometimes because I think it pulls me out of the transactional sort of you know, yes, punch the ticket kind of, you know, mindset. Yeah, it pulls me out of that into this sort of this like the Jesus wants me there. Right. Yep. You know, in eternity, in heaven, forever. Yes, Jesus really wants me there. Yep. And it's more than just like this is for my benefit, this is for this is the best thing for me. I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go, and it's gonna be awesome, like because I believe in Jesus. No, I mean, yes, that's true, but Jesus wants me there. Yes, right. Like he isn't in different, he isn't indifferent about that fact. Yeah, agreed. Right. And so that part really like hits me. Like, this is the desire of the King of Kings. Yeah, he's come to lay down his life so that because he wants me there. Right. And I think that's that window into his heart is always hits me, like, you know, at you know, it can hit me really powerfully. It's just like, oh my gosh. Yes, Jesus, you want me there. Right. It isn't like you're like, okay, well, the door's open, you know, I've made a way, come if you want, kind of deal. It's like you want me there.

SPEAKER_05

Right. Yeah, it's like it it to Jesus, it is obviously about deep connection and communion. Yes. Like for every person, that that's what we are made for. We're made for deep connection and deep communion with God, the Father, Son, Holy Spirit, you know, and yeah.

“That Where I Am You May Be Also”

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um, and I think some of these things, you know, uh reading from verse 20, it's like I do, I don't ask for these only, meaning just the people, this his disciples and the people around him. Yes, but are also those who believe in me through their word, right? I'm sending them. Yeah, and there's going to be a whole host of people, thousands, millions, tens of millions of people, yeah, and billions even, yeah, who will believe in me through their word. Yes. And then he goes, uh, that they may all be one, just as just as you, Father, are in me and I in you, they may be in us, so that the world may believe that you sent me. The gl and then he goes, Oh, this is a we should hit this for sure at some point. The glory that you have given to me, I have given to them. And then it goes, that they may be one, even as we are one. Yes. Like that's to me, that might be mysterious. Yeah, that might be one of the most outrageous things that Jesus says. Yeah. Like that the unity of between father and son, he's asking for that to be in us. Yes. That they may be one, even as we are one. Yes. Like that just tilts me. And I go as like, well, I know, I know how far short I fall of that. Right? Yeah. Right. But this is the thing, this is the thing that and again, there's a now and not yet to the kingdom, and that, you know, obviously there's a there's a measure of which we will see in the future, this oneness, this unity. Right. We will see when Jesus comes again, and and all of that. But I would say it's it's it's it's a it's reasonable to say that this oneness is moving, right? It's moving forward. Right. There's oneness, there's a unity that is coming to the body of Christ, to the bride of Christ, that the Lord by His by the Holy Spirit is is accomplishing in the body of Christ right now. Right. Right. So there's a there's a measure of oneness, and there's a unity that we would feel, but that he's asked for this, he's asked for this outrageous thing. He's like, Father, they would be one even as we are one. And so I don't know what just feel free to chime in on that.

Kept In The World, Not Removed

SPEAKER_05

Oh, well, it's it's it's just so um, I say mysterious, and what I mean by that is, you know, we we believe that in scripture, mystery is something to not avoid because it can't be solved. It's actually to draw us in. Like it's a wonderful thing that we will be unpacking these these things that are real, and it's okay that it's mysterious, right? So I find that very that dynamic so mysterious, how Jesus brings forward something he he and his father obviously are very familiar with. Yes, like the oneness they share. And Jesus had just like he's 30 some years old at this point. People say 33 years old at this point. Uh, he's lived a lot of years in that oneness with his father. He's very familiar with it. In some ways, he's framing all that anybody has experienced of him on the earth comes out of that oneness he's praying in. Right. Right. And he's referencing that, saying, I want these followers right here to have the same oneness. And then everyone who believes in me through their teaching, yeah, this oneness is the thing that's gonna keep them on track. Yeah, and so it really does, it just calls to mind that mixture of, yeah, I'm sure I'm going to learn to express that oneness, the oneness that the father and the son share, I am going to continue to experience and be more effective in that, but it's not gonna come out of what I can do and bring to the table, it's gonna come from something Jesus has already established. Like this is the thing that's gonna, if I pay attention to that oneness that he's asking his father for, if I say yes and amen, which I have learned to actually agree with Jesus' prayer in my life. Right. I've literally practiced over the years. I am this prayer. Yes, I never could have prayed the prayer. Right. Like this is Jesus' prayer, but Amen. Like I've I've laid my life on the altar. If I say it this way, ooh, this is perhaps I'm saying an epic statement here. Uh I have laid my life as a living sacrifice on the altar of Jesus' prayer. Yes. And my laying my life on that altar is amen. Like I will stake my existence on what he's praying right there. Like what I don't have to, I don't have to depend on my ability to perform oneness. Right. I am trusting that my the oneness I share with God, yeah, being united with him and with you and all the other brothers and sisters in Christ, all of it is happening because of Jesus' prayer. Yeah. What I'm doing is I'm saying, Amen, accept it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And he says it, he says it sort of in the next verse, right? So he says, I in them, and you and me. So Christ and Christ in us is our uh access point, I think, our access point to this oneness. It's where it's probably the the it's the it's the reason why this can be true in our lives. Yes, absolutely. Christ, Christ in you.

SPEAKER_05

Brian, Brian Simmons in the Passion Translation says, I love his phrase, life union with Christ. Life union with Christ. Like that to me, that captures it. It's the back and forth. Jesus had this back and forth life union with his father. Yeah. And in this prayer, we're invited into it so beautifully. Like the back and forth of that, like that oneness. So Brian phrases it in life union. Like I love that because that takes care of the I in you, you in me, like that exchange back and forth. So anyway, I interrupted.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you know, I think it was just that the the idea is that like life union, it's like there's no part of your life that isn't connected to him. Right. Right. And so that to me, that's how that that hits me. Right. It's an awakening. It's there, right? It's like the fullness of like so that every aspect. And again, like you can connect it a little bit to you know, the refining work of the Holy Spirit, like the sanctification, if you want to the you want the theological term, right? So this process of like ongoing um sanctification, the journey that any believer makes towards Christlieness, you know, to be filled with the fullness of God is very connected to this, because it it happens, right, because it's the work of it's the work of the Holy Spirit, you know, the Christ journey to Christ-like, because I'm I'm in them, because Jesus is in me. And so an answer to prayer. How amazing is that?

SPEAKER_05

Like, yeah, you and I are sitting here living in peace with God, yeah, because Jesus prayed. Like that's amazing to me. Like, yeah, can can I just drop a little thing here? I it's it's a simple thing, and yet it somehow helped help me at a point in my life, and it might help somebody today. If there's one prayer, part of the reason I love John 17, if there's one prayer that you can absolutely guarantee the Father is answering, it's John 17.

SPEAKER_06

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_05

Like if you if you if you can count on one prayer in the Bible being answered, yes, it's right there in John 17. Yeah. You know, like you know that the Father is answering, will fully answer, has always been answering. Right.

Oneness Like Father And Son

SPEAKER_01

That prayer. And and and I think that's like there's just so it's just so loaded, right? Like where he says, um, you know, in here too, right? He says, like, I'm not, I'm not praying that you that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them, right? That you protect them. Yes. Right? Like it's like, you know, I verse 15, I do not ask that you take them out of the world, right? So I'm not asking that you remove them, but that you keep them from the evil one. Yes. Right? And they are of the they are not of the world just as I am not of the world. So it's really just this prayer of like, like here in the middle of, you know, 2025, where nations are raging, there's wars and rumors of wars, and you know, angst and up upheaval and political unrest and uh identity crisis, crises. In the middle of that is that that God's not interested in, at least to this point, he's not interested in removing us physically from the world, but that he's actually saying, Yeah, I'm sending you to this world of upheaval, of of darkness, yes, to be light, uh, of upheaval and identity crises and and wars and rumors of wars. And I'm asking that you're that the father keeps you in the middle of this. And it's not that you get like, you know, again, it's not how necessarily that will go for you, but that you're that you would be kept by the father, preserved for his purposes, yeah, in this place, yeah, so that he will accomplish his will through through us. Right.

SPEAKER_05

And it's and it's safe for us to assume as he did that with Jesus. Yes, absolutely the same way the Father was already doing this with Jesus when he's praying, hey, they're they're not any more a part of the world than I am. Yeah. So what you've been doing for me, Father, do for them. Do for them. Like, whoa. It's like, that's so powerful. Like, he has left us here not to just survive either. Yeah, and I caught that in what you were saying. We are two, we will be making the same sort of difference Jesus was already making. Yeah, we're just multiplied.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, right. Isn't that wild? I think, and I think that's true. Like, it's not so that the world can beat us up. Right. Right? It's so that we can like our because this isn't about like the this the narratives of the gospel, the narrative of the word of God isn't so that you can be beat up by the world. Right. It's so that you can flourish in spite of the world. Yes, right, and transform it. Right and bring the kingdom. Right. Like it's in these, in these sort of intangible but very noticeable ways, right? It's the the classic line of well, there's something different about you. Why, you know, why when you went through that, you did, you know, we've heard testimonies like why when you why when you went through that, did you go through it like that? Well, it's because circumstances don't dictate who I am. It's because Jesus is with him. Right. Jesus himself is wow. Yeah, absolutely. That's right. That's amazing. Yeah. So there isn't a there is an abundance, like an abundance of like, again, it it it can be, you know, financial. It doesn't have to be financial, but it's abundant, it's a prospering of soul, body, soul, and spirit that that God wants to do in and through us, right? And again, I I don't don't get hung up on the financial piece. It's a prospering. It's like how like how you go through the world, right? That's what the Lord is trying to do. And again, like kind of you know drawn a drawn a line to our setup conversation, right? That, but it's like it's actually matters, it actually matters that I don't get stuck in my head. Oh it does. It matters and that the Lord in his kindness reminds me that I don't have to be stuck in my head, right? Because when I get stuck in my head at times I just shut down, right? And so I'm not engaging with the world right as you know Christ in me the hope of glory isn't engaging with the world the way that he wants me to engage. Right. And so that's that's you know one of the one of the areas where he's trying to refine me personally to to say okay this this whole this answer the answer to this prayer in some respects it matters that I don't get fixated on the the the swirly things the swirly circumstances of my own life.

SPEAKER_05

Well it it hits me uh that this prayer shows up in in the absolute grit and grind of Jesus fulfilling his mission. Like like what surrounds it in the other chapters right around it before and after and the events that happen you know like it was only perhaps moments after this that you get the whole debacle of you know Jesus arrest and Peter chopping the ear off and Jesus turning around and putting the ear back on like the like the grit of the whole unfolding epic he praised this right in the middle of that. So I that ought to be an encouragement to every person that in the the grit and grind of your life this Jesus is still praying like this prayer still comes to you in the middle of your grit and grind. And so when you're tempt like as you're as you get stuck in your head remember in the middle of that grind Jesus is praying this that Jesus has prayed this for you. You know anyway I'm getting going to get us down a rabbit trail there. But just to encourage everybody like this this prayer didn't that they didn't schedule an inaugural address for Jesus with a band and a stage and let's everybody take work off for the day and let's hear Jesus speech.

Saying Amen To Jesus’ Prayer

SPEAKER_01

He prayed this in the middle of crazy unfolding yeah gritty reality yeah you know and I always I think this is I don't know I think we've I don't I don't think we've come at it like this but this we've been hit we've been hinting at it a little bit like the fact is every believer from from this from from the day of Pentecost onward is living in the paradigm of this prayer. Yes right yeah in all of history yeah absolutely so all in all encompassing and it's just like you're living having been prayed for yes by the King of kings and you're an amen right you're a fruit right you're an answer to the prayer Jesus and so it's like his desire over you his desire to be connected to you every believer every believer that will come you know in the next however long before Jesus comes again right every believer lives in the paradigm of this prayer for him you know again like you like the oneness the unity the sanctification you know the the just the connection all of all of it right that they the being kept by God yes the eternal life right and again that like that's an outrageous statement. This is eternal life that they know you the only true God and Jesus Christ who you have sent amazing right like that's like amazing like we're living like it's almost like Jesus before he went to the cross wrapped it up in like he he kind of just like prayed this all-encompassing prayer so that we can live breathe and move within the paradigm of this prayer like we're almost like this this is the ultimate prayer covering yeah right like we talk about prayer covering yeah like this is the ultimate prayer covering that we live our lives maybe I'm sure most of it ignorant of this prayer nonetheless it's still there yeah right where we're we're living and breathing we're growing we're flourishing we're having struggles where all of it is like you know the ups and the downs of life are all within this ultimate prayer covering yeah and so that that eternal life is this knowing you father and Jesus Christ whom you sent that's verse three right yep yeah so John 173 what an amazing verse of scripture to come to commit to memory what a beautiful scripture because I mean Jesus says it all right there yes you know and just to throw in there it's worth digging in for anybody to find out what is eternal life is it just chronology is it just is it just out on into infinity chronologically it's more than that it's actually the quality of eternal life the quality of life God designed for human beings and all of creation frankly to experience that is accessed in relationship with Jesus and the Father through the Holy Spirit.

SPEAKER_05

And again we've hit it often but we it's good that we hit it often that's where you that's the source and the start of everything. It's not the reward in the end. No like live in this way live in this way and you will get eternal life it's like no it's by faith and it's relationship it's accepting that God has taken care of everything to have relationship with us. Yes. We're saying yes Paul you know I'm not ashamed of the gospel which is the power of salvation for all who believe um for those it's it's by faith from beginning to end. Yeah and you it's is it's a reality you receive that God has done everything to create a relationship with us.

Eternal Life As Knowing God

SPEAKER_01

We're saying yes yes then it all unfolds yeah it's not an achievement yes on our part it's not this is like yeah right so this is the the thing it's like this pulls in my mind anyway this pulls all of the awesome things from the future it pulls it into the now yes right it pulls yeah like exactly all of the all of the being with the Lord knowing God experiencing his goodness his blessing his his forgiveness his mercy his kindness his joy his love all of that it pulls that into now right right so this is the way the father was keeping Jesus in the world right with this eternal life he's saying the same eternal life is going to keep these followers yes and I ask for that to happen Father isn't that amazing that's so that's it's almost like you like this chapter oh my soul I just I'm trying to hold myself back a little a little bit that's good. Let's hit this one this this one thing um because I think you know if you grew up in the church this will resonate with you. And so and we've talked about this before um you know but this verse 22 uh the glory you'll know yeah if you grew up in church you know this is you'll you'll know where we're going with all this stuff. Number verse 22 is the glory that you have given me I have given to them. Okay. Right. And and if there's the there's the this glory question where and this always this always rubs me the wrong way when people uh whether it's receiving they go well all glory to God. Yes that's absolutely true. As in credit yes or even credit or uh it's this the idea of like uh you know we don't want it's like the we don't want the glory it's this weird unsanctified humility that we're somehow robbing God of his glory. Right, okay I get you right it's not appropriate for us to participate in his glory. Right. It's not appropriate for us to participate. Like we have to remove any mention of glory we cannot we cannot participate in because of because we're we're gonna we're gonna mess it up we're gonna we're gonna somehow taint or screw up with the glory of God. Right. And I think I think that's the wrong conversation. Yeah I really do. And I and it kind of rubs me the wrong way when I you know again like it's just it's a little bit of a it's yeah what I would call unsanctified humility uh where it's just like I'm you know we're not gonna talk about how recei we're not gonna talk about me receiving uh any kind of praise you know any kind of like way to go good job you know all of that you and again there's nothing I I want I want people to hear what I'm saying and not what I'm not saying because it's ultimately all glory goes to God because he's worthy of all glory. But there is there is a line that we draw that he's not drawing in my opinion. Yes. Right right where he's like you're included in this as well because I've given you my glory like you know I where it in the it comes out of this old I think I don't know where I think it's in somewhere in the old testament where the Lord's saying I will not share my glory with another when we think we're separate right like we're we think that we're gone worthy worthy another right right right but he's just gone through this whole process where the he's like we're one like this is where this is the deal here where like I'm not holding my glory to myself but I'm freely sharing it with the ones who will believe in me. Yes. Right. So his glory is not he's not being um he's not being possessive possessive that's the word I'm looking for he's not being possessive with his glory here but he's freely sharing it with you so that when there's this mysterious it's not like we need to again like reach out and grab his glory right it's not that it's not necessarily that but it's this we shouldn't reject it either.

SPEAKER_05

Right right that's the that's where that's where I'm going it's like so it's like Jesus the way Jesus the way Jesus flowed with with this glory that he shared with the Father. Yes like the glory you've given me father yeah uh I've passed on to them yes and it's gonna op that glory is going to have the same effect on them it's gonna hold us together. Right. Um the way Jesus would so often in the scripture saying these works that you see me doing I don't do them on my own. Yes. You know I do what I see my father doing. This is to my father's glory that these things happen. Yes. But we don't imagine Jesus distancing himself from the Father when he says those things. Right.

Sharing In Jesus’ Glory

SPEAKER_01

We we actually see it as drawing the Father and Jesus together yeah revealing these things reveal the father's glory like yeah and because I think yeah sorry that's it's this it's this thing of what happens like so say you do something really awesome right so you you know you pray for someone and they get healed or you give uh whatever just just that's the world we live in so that's the example I'm gonna use yeah you pray for someone and they get healed and they come up and say thank you for thank you for praying to kill my friend too yeah right right but they but they come up filled with grass thank you for praying for me and then for you to turn around and go well that wasn't me right that was God. Right. It distances me from it distances me from so it's like the real answer is like oh thank you like you were you're somehow removing yourself from the equation when God isn't removed. He he was looking for you to be in that spot to pray for that person so that he could move through you. Right. Right you're not removed from that so you're a participant right in that glory.

SPEAKER_05

So perhaps it would be appropriate to say thank you God is amazing. Yes include me absolutely part of his being amazing is he includes me. Yes and God isn't interested in removing you from the equation that's right he's in he's interested in including in including you including you in his power in his power moving through you so in his glory I love that he's interested in including you so that's the problem that I the rub that I have it just irritates me a little bit not in a yeah it's a pet peeve let's call it a pet peeve yeah well so thinking of the 12 I often have wondered when like like Jesus says I've given them I've given them the glory that you gave me yes I'm like when when did that but it but it was all along maybe that was news to them maybe that yes I know it was all along the way like he was he was that's he was doing this thing that they didn't even realize he was doing yes I've been it's very it's very mysterious and worth studying like what is wow like this is very earthy and heaven and earthy it's very much his kingdom hey these these men don't even realize it but I've been giving them I've been planting my the glory you gave me I've been yeah I've been growing it in them I'm passing it on and and I love I love it.

SPEAKER_01

So anyway you can't and again that can get derailed right we when we think when we think too highly of ourselves sure that can get derailed away all that stuff but we shouldn't be afraid and that's the that's the weird that's the weird thing like so avoiding both ditches in that humility question is critical to this right yep so it's like it's it's really this whole thing of like of drawing lines where Jesus isn't right right taking him at his word where where we say we say no no no it wasn't me it was the Lord yep and Jesus is going I I'm not I'm inviting you into my glory yeah I've given you my glory I'm inviting you in. Yeah don't draw lines yeah right like right and you can't do without my glory I've given you you can't do without this right so stop so stop drawing lines because it's gonna hurt you more than you know help it's it's hurting you more than helping you. And so I just I think that that's the reality that every believer every believer has been invited in to share in the glory of God right because he's given it to us. And that's why I love that he said it because if he didn't say it we it would be I mean it's hard for us to believe it because we all cause because we suddenly as soon as we start down this road of becomes unbelievable. Well it becomes unbelievable because we think of our own performance. We think of our own qual we try to we we imagine this list that we've created of our own qualifications right and then suddenly that goes obviously that goes sideways.

SPEAKER_05

Wow right because we think of all the ways that we felt we've fallen short and Jesus isn't having that conversation right we're the ones having the conversation it's amazing and you you flagged something earlier just before we started that I don't want to miss either like what do we do you had a just a great reminder of this like what do we do with the I will not share my glory with another right and you you you quoted uh there's a uh there's a Graham Graham Cook is a uh prophetic guy who's been around for 30 or 40 years. Not the Graham Cook who's the son of our friend of ours Jeff Cook. We love you Graham Cook yeah but this is another Graham Cook.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah it's so and he goes you and his quote is like you my friend like as the ones who are in Christ are not we're not another we're not another like we're not somebody who's disconnected that's right from God. Yeah right we're very much connected to yeah we're just yeah he just he goes you're not another my friend right like if you are he just goes he's just go he just proceeds to say the next verse right the gl the glory I've given to them he talks about oneness in you know I in them and you in me so he's just he's it's in the same breath as he's saying I'm sharing my glory with them right yes I'm sharing my glory with them he's also saying I'm in them right I'm like you're in me father and I'm in them so however this mysterious union works this is this is this is the thing that's like you know this is this is the reality right now Anthony's holding an I don't invisible orb I am in holding an invisible orb. This is the reality that we that every believer in the sound of my voice is living with God has given you his glory he's given you and and you know not of your own qualifications either because of what he's done. Yes right and so that's the part that we get right when we talk about this we always there's this separation that creeps into that thinking of God's over there I'm here he's doing his thing from over there you know from this other place right this he's doing he's doing his work in from some other place yes right not from Christ in me the hope of glory yes right so we so like this mysterious union is here's the orb again like this mysterious union is at the core of of how we do what we do yes yeah right yeah this life union with God yes is at the very core of how we do like when when I when I pray for something and something shifts or or if uh my journey to live a holy life right where we're purity and integrity and kindness uh you know and love and in compassion where all where my my my transformation process goes it's at the very core is this life union it's holiness it's holiness you know and also you know it's like it's like the another way to say like the power of God working in and through me right so it's it's like this is at the very core it's not from somewhere else. Yeah right because amazing because I thought that like I lived in a paradigm forever that when God, you know, if I'm standing here I've got my hand on you and we're praying for something right right if God answers that it's gonna come from somewhere else.

Christ In You, The Hope Of Glory

SPEAKER_05

Yeah right he's gonna he's gonna he's sitting up in heaven and he is like saying you know I'm you know and he moves his hand and then God moves right it's not from there though he is there yeah right it's very connected to Christ in me the hope of glory man right yeah this uh this is to me there that thread runs through scripture of the center of all things like like the center of all things the the river of life Jesus refers to that flows from within us yes like there's this dynamic to he is above all things but there's another dynamic that does run through scripture of the inward to the outward flow of the way God works. And there's this beautiful hymn uh the traditionally we believe it's a hymn in Colossians chapter one where Paul writes this section about Jesus and the preeminence of Jesus and you can find it there in in chapter one of Colossians but it says he is above all things he is over all things and in him all things hold together. Yeah and I heard someone recently say he is at the center holding the universe together he's also in the center of you holding you together. That's good and this it's a very it's a it's a mystery and yet it is worth pursuing of okay somehow God's kingdom is at the center of all things like he is not removed. This is why I belie I love so much pressing into how does the new creation come like it it comes through his redemptive like I I think w my opinion is that we are going to be surprised as things continue unfold on into the forever yeah that we will likely be surprised at how God brings about the new because his his MO has been to to bring the new from the inside like to enter into things and bring bring new life all that cut to come back to say you know this glory of being in Christ and he is in us that he's praying into in this chapter is far more profound than we would and real to every moment than we would realize. Like he is holding the whole grand story of salvation together and he's holding us together.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah this is yeah yeah so this might be a little bit of a slide off okay but but I I actually think like you you know um this this is where Christ being at the center I actually think creation like models that like it it's a shadow of that right so I agree for example for example everything in everything in creation orbits around something right right yeah when you look at you look at our solar system earth is orbiting around the sun if you look at a galaxy all these stars are orbiting around this giant black hole right and there's hundreds and millions and maybe even billions of them right or there are billions of them and then so so from the macro right the macro it exists like that. Yeah and then atoms down to the infinite right the the atoms like right at the the building blocks of creation right it's all orbiting around something amazing yeah and to to me like these are shadows of the glory of absolutely where where this is a shadow of of God being at you know the center amazing of every of everything Christ. So anyway that's been a everybody's looking at their belly button now going what who is this being that I am yeah so we're like living it we yeah we live in this existence like creation is a like creation is a is um is made up of orbits right yeah like like from the from the smallest to the giant like to the biggest incomprehensible from the incomprehensibly small to the incomprehensibly big orbits exist yeah because as a shadow of that everything orbits around yeah the King of Kings.

Creation As A Picture Of Centeredness

SPEAKER_05

Yeah anyway amazing that that right that that would that that would be a part of when Jesus rolls this phrase out the glory that you gave me I've passed on to them and it's gonna get lived out in the grit of everyday life of these 12 and then all of us over the millennia it's incredible what we're talking about. Like this thing we're talking about is incredible. It is and and it's based on okay father as we move forward here's what you and we're gonna do this like please stick with me in this we're gonna do this together and I'm asking you to to answer these prayers for me on behalf of these followers. Amazing yeah maybe maybe this is I think this is a good place to to land the plane uh maybe um maybe just pray pray as the Lord leads you out of out of john 17 and then we can wow we can call it yeah okay what a what an honor thanks Anthony yeah you're welcome Dan yeah yeah uh oh uh father son holy spirit we we come to you today and we're just so in awe of you and what you are doing and uh we thank you for every person who who's listening to this uh this podcast uh in in a moment or on on into the future as they listen to this as they Lord we just pray we we we just don't join together um and we say amen to your prayer Lord Jesus and somehow in this incredible mystery you're there at the right hand of the Father and we know that you are hearing our prayer based on your promise and the father's hearing this prayer and the spirit's participating so we just come and we say let let all of creation be an amen to this prayer yeah we say for the glory of for the glory of your name um bring all of creation into agreement with your prayer Jesus and whatever the phrase means so that the world will know that you were the one the Father sent it we say a huge yes and we give our we lay down our lives to see that come to pass and we agree Lord convince the whole world that Jesus is the one you sent. Yes and I pray that our lives would give witness to that in ways that we can't even imagine right now. We just take the ceiling off we pray for our friends who are listening and uh Lord take the ceiling off of the ways that you will actually answer your prayer through their lives as they live as an amen. And teach teach the church all around the world uh to to to participate in this prayer like never before God I pray that you would bring your kingdom and Lord Jesus the Spirit and the bride say come yeah you know uh and we just say Lord bring the forever kingdom uh increasingly God and may it never end and yeah just I think I've said it all right there that I want that's in my heart God we just we bless one another in Jesus' name and uh we just look forward to what's going to happen in this day and in this moment. Amen. Amen well that's a wrap on this episode it's been a privilege to have you as an honored guest as we all learn to hear God better.
