Welcome back. I'm so happy you're here today. This is Quiet English with Jackie, and I'm Jackie. Let's take a deep breath, relax, and settle in. In today's episode we continue The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde. Listen for the feeling in this story. Every language has a rhythm, and today you're going to listen for the rhythm of English. Sometimes one small act of kindness can begin to change a life. The little swallow looked up at the happy prince. Tears were still falling down the statue's golden face. Far away, said the prince softly, in a small house, a poor house, there is a woman sitting beside a table. Her face is tired. Her hands are rough and red from sewing all day. She is making beautiful dresses for rich women at the palace. But in a small bed near the corner of the room, her little boy is sick. He has a fever. He is asking for oranges. But his mother is very poor. She only has water to give him. I have a ruby on my sword, said the happy prince. Please take it to her. The swallow moved his wings nervously. But my friends are waiting for me in Egypt, he said. They are flying over warm rivers now and resting beside great temples. The prince said nothing for a moment, and then softly he spoke again. Little swallow will you stay with me for one night and be my messenger? The bird looked at the prince's sad eyes and suddenly he did not want to leave. But I will stay one night. Thank you, little swallow, said the prince. So the swallow gently pulled the ruby from the prince's sword. Then he flew over the city rooftops. Below him he could see people eating in warm homes. He could hear music and laughter. At last he came to the poor little house. The mother had fallen asleep at the table. She was still holding her needle in her hand. The little boy moved weakly in his bed. I'm thirsty, he whispered softly. The swallow flew quietly into the room and placed the ruby beside the woman's hand. Then he flew around the little boy's bed, waving his wings gently to cool his forehead. Ah how cool I feel said the child. I think I am getting better. And slowly he fell asleep. The swallow felt warm inside. Not outside. The night air was still cold, but inside something felt different. Have you ever noticed that helping someone else can change how you feel? Sometimes kindness warms the heart in a very quiet way. The swallow flew back to the happy prince. I've done what you asked, he said, and strangely I feel warm now. That is because you have done a good thing, said the prince gently, and the little swallow began to think. Maybe there was something more important than flying to Egypt. If you'd like, pause for a moment and picture the quiet little room, the tired mother, the sleeping child, and the tiny bird in the darkness. Thank you for listening to Quiet English with Jackie. This story reminds us that even the smallest act of kindness can bring comfort and hope. I would truly love to hear from you. Send me a message and tell me where you are listening from, or tell me about a small kindness you remember from your own life. I may share your message in a future episode. In the next episode, the swallow makes another choice, and the prince gives away something even more precious. Until next time, take care and God bless.
